Shadowrun: Hong Kong sourcebook has 5e variant rules and lists of equipment for early 2050s games

So would a Troll Decker be viable?

Yes.

So let's say, theoretically, I really liked Shadowrun but didn't like how poorly-organized and clunky the rules felt.

Say I just checked out Anarchy for the first time and really like it. Like, "might actually play Shadowrun in a Shadowrun system instead of using GURPS or OpenD6 Space," like it. On the personal scale, I feel like it does things really, really well.

But what if, to continue this theory, I also take the opinions of this community a tad more seriously than "pfft, fuck those guys," because for the most part you seem to be among the most chill of a lot of the /tg/ generals.

Do you guys think it does a decent job of representing Shadowrun? Do you feel that its lack of a few things like vehicle rules (or grenades) harms it, or do you find those kind of missing things easy enough to implement? Are there already community-made houserules adding shit, or do you guys think it does a good job of being rules-lite; covering just enough that you're comfortable doing anything beyond it narratively?
>>
>>49981361
>Do you guys think it does a decent job of representing Shadowrun?
No.

>do you guys think it does a good job of being rules-lite?
No.

It's still a bloated and clunky mess, just less so than the regular version. If you really want to play a rules-lite game, take one of the many generic rules-lite system and play in the SR setting. Otherwise, embrace the clunky and play the regular Shadowrun.
>>
>>49981361
Rules light typically translates to "Low-effort, poorly done, throwaway system that will never be given any thought again"

Anarchy, Dungeon World, FATE, anything else that tries to bill itself as "rules light" is something that, generally speaking, you should be heavily suspicious of if not just outright avoid.
>>
>>49981361
Anarchy doesn't work as good for SR as the normal rules do.

It works a hell lot better than any other alternative rules though.
>>
>>49981086
For sure. You lose one or two dice from your decking dice pools, but you can withstand a terrifying amount of hotsim biofeedback.

I'd call dwarves the best deckers - no penalty to Logic or Intuition, bonuses to Body and Willpower - but trolls make a weirdly strong showing, as they do in any role directly related to taking stupid amounts of Physical damage.

So, probably a Cybercombat specialist who goes hard in hotsim all the time.
>>
>>49980008
>>49980025
You do NOT need an RCC in order to control and command drones. You only need an RCC if you're trying to stream Autosofts to drones (instead of having them run locally on the drone itself) and command multiple drones simultaneously.

Someone with a commlink and a drone can use AR or the touch screen to completely remote control a drone instead of using its Pilot/Autosofts, even, using things like Reaction+Pilot Skill (without any sexy bonuses from a Control Rig) to remotely pilot the drone, or Logic+Gunnery to remote-control drone-mounted weapons.

RCCs are important for drones running autonomously (they let a swarm benefit from its autosofts, or let a drone use autosofts much higher than their Pilot rating for better dice pools) and Control Rigs are by far the best character option in the game for driving vehicles, but a Rigger does not - strictly speaking - need to take advantage of either of those options in order to get use out of their drones, if their needs are more limited than that.

Hrmm. Anyone got a RAW reference on whether RCCs can be mounted in a cranial cyberdeck cyberware? Can't find anything to support it one way or another.
>>
>>49981923
the question was about keeping them save though.
A good RCC will give you noise reduction, better firewall and somewhere to run programs on top of being a comlink. So RCC is not necessary but its damn useful
>>
>>49981923

I wonder if they'll ever re-introduce rigger adepts. They were very cool but really don't work so well in 5e when the RCC is so core to it.

I know this isn't a character art thread, but if anyone has pics of cyberpunk orc women I'd really appreciate it being shared. I need non combat monster pics, but I'll take what I can get.

They're terrible, though. Much better to homebrew wireless bonuses on a case-by-case bonus after removing wireless.

>>
>>49983343
>better firewall
No, actually, you'll usually get a better firewall for cheaper with a R6 commlink.

>noise reduction
Is piss-easy to get on a commlink if you need it.

Basically, you can get both of those things cheaper and easier with a good, properly-upgraded commlinks. The benefit of the RCC is having groups of drone and streaming high-rating Autosofts to low-Pilot drones.

If you just want to remote control spy drones in AR, the RCC is the worse choice in general than a Transys Avalon or something.

>>

It's the Necropotence of Shadowrun: only the last bit of essence matters. If you don't need that essence for other shit, you might as well roid up on fake muscle.
>>
So, I was thinking of getting the Adept Spell ability. Can anyone suggest uses? Am not sure if it's a trap or gimmick, honestly. Just thought it might be nice to have some ace in the hole spell.
>>
>>49984616
Are you a melee adept? If so the fuck ya'll fire nuke from shadow spells would be kinda neat. (AOE centered on you. You don't take damage, but everyone else does.)
>>
>>49984638
Yes, I am a melee adept. I didn't even know that spell existed.
>>
>>49984638
Worth noting here, it's a Direct spell, it's Physical, and it damages objects by RAW.

Which... kinda means that technically having it makes you melt the fucking ground you're on and turn into more or less a living inferno from hell that will never extinguish.
>>
Does anybody know where I could find a good map for a cave, or something else fitting for an underground insect spirit hive?

An RCC is both not a cyberdeck and is the size of a briefcase.

>>
>>49984616
The problem with Adept Spell is that you have to invest in a spellcasting skill, spend 1 PP, and on top of that the drain is always Physical for whatever you pick. It's a serious, extremely major character investment, so realistically you need to pick something that you'll then build your entire character gimmick around.
>>
>>49984957
Nobody gives a shit about Infected, you fucking trog, and expecting them to get fixed in Chummer instead of Yekka spending that time more productively on literally anything else started as retarded and has become mental illness instead.

You'd be the local expert on retardation and mental illness, right?
>>
>>49984946
Oh. Well, probably Picasso? It's not terribly physically limiting, outside of being unable to talk or blink.

If you want my opinion, though, I don't think Deformity is the way to go. Both are too extreme for what you've got going on. You could just take Reduced Sense (Sight) and leave it there.

How does this character eat or drink, though?
>>
>>49985073

I figured he got Cyber Eyes so there wouldn't be an issue with his eyes needing moisture from blinking, and he doesn't 'eat' but I plan on giving him the Nutritional Storage System.

Is Witness My Hate ever really worth it?
>>
>>49985216
>Is Witness My Hate ever really worth it?
Yeah, it's good for casting high-damage combat spells while letting them remain Stun damage.

Remember, whether a spell is Stun or Physical is based on net hits, not based on Force, so it lets you enjoy the equivalent of higher Force but with fewer actual hits.

Extremely situational, though. Very niche.

I think the closest I've ever gotten to a pun with a character name was "Maserati" on my Adept
His real first name was Masimo, and he was focused on being fast as fuck.

Other characters I've made were Shebbah, a Saudi Arabian Black Mage who focused on illusion spells(Shebbah is a rough romanization of the Arabic word for "Phantom"), and Balor, an Irish combat mage, who I never actually got to play.

Granted, the players in the game I'm running right now will be running into an Insect Shaman who summons roach spirits, named Rocher next session.

>>
>>49987607

>>
>>49987238
In Germany we laugh about them, they are the poor mans Hilti.
>>
>>49987692
I know the outskirts of LA (Chinatown, Pasadena, the valley, etc) are PCC, but Studio City is the walled off nice part of town, and since Horizon was founded there, it wouldn't be a huge surprise that the interior was all their turf.

>>49987717
Yeah, I like this idea. Plus, it makes having a good fake SIN important since one of the runners is a full corp SIN global music superstar
>>
>>49987685
>Remember that if the number of hits you rolled when casting the spell (Step 4) exceeds your Magic rating, then the Drain causes Physical instead of Stun damage.
Page 282. It's based on Force for summoning/binding spirits, but it's based on hits for Sorcery. You can cast a Force 12 Fireball, for example, but as long as you roll equal to or less than your Magic in net hits, you're only going to take Stun.

So, Witness My Hate is viable for casting lower-Force combat spells (to keep your Limit low enough to protect against Physical Drain) while still enjoying higher damage values, as if you'd cast it at a higher Force instead.
>>
>>49987152
Kinda, but not all withered. They look like green-skinned, sharp-toothed, black-eyed humans, basically.
>>
>>49987692
>namefag being an idiot
Surprise.
>>
>>49987812

WMH mainly comes into it's own when you're multi-casting manabolts (or stunbolts) with enough drain dice to take it, as it's effectively +2 DV per spell as long as you get at least one hit. With 6 mag and 6 skill, you can split 3 ways with 4 dice each before any other modifiers, each spell dealing 2+hits resisted with WP.
>>
>>49987607
Big pieces of Fun City and Hollywood are owned by Horizon, but only through the PCC's permission. The PCC is a lot less tolerant of megacorporate extraterritoriality than some nations are, but still very susceptible to bribery by big players to ignore issues when they occur.

If you're planning on using Direct, rather than Indirect, combat spells? Hell yes. +2 DV is the equivalent of +6 dice on a Direct Combat spell, which is more than worth +2 Drain.
>>
>>49987932
>+2 DV is the equivalent of +6 dice on a Direct Combat spell, which is more than worth +2 Drain.
This. It's the difference between +2 Drain to get +2 Force which means you'll MAYBE get +2 Damage (if you roll well enough), or +2 Drain to get +2 Damage directly, regardless of how well you roll. The tradeoff is obvious.
>>
>>49987706
So it does. I assumed fasley that if a NAN had a mega founded within it, which it does, it would be mentioned in the page about the nation itself. Weird.

>>49987844
I keep forgetting I left that on, sorry.
>>
>>49987812
Worth noting that it's based on hits after applying the limit (Force) of the spell. So with Magic 6, you'll never take physical casting a force 6 spell, but if you cast a force 7 or more, you might take stun, and might take physical.
>>
>>49988216

You can also use reagents to set the limit at your magic, and thus never take physical, even if you overcast as hard as you can. Though this doesn't work if you use Push The Limit through edge.
>>

Pain Editor is the since best bit of 'ware for a Mage, bar none.

Crazy cybereyes for achieving improbable line of sight are great, but the ability to not take any penalties, ever, period, from Stun or Physical right up until you keel over dead?

That's an incredible value for someone who takes Stun/Physical damage as a normal consequence of casting spells.
>>
So, I've got myself an odd situation.

I've just started up a new group of 5e, and everything seems alright.

The only Hangup is that one of the guys is basically playing Jack the Ripper.

I know the guy enough to know he's not gonna try to make this too weird (I.E. He more or less is just going to do it in his downtime, have some rolls and stuff, no actually acting out the scenes), but, eventually one of two things are gonna happen.

1: Someone is gonna get on his tail and bring an angry group to the party,

or 2: Eventually, news of a Serial Killer is going to get on the news, Lonestar is going to offer a big bounty for him, and the party is gonna hear about it.

I think it could be an interesting dynamic, and the guy is chill enough that he's perfectly fine if his character ends up dying due to this, but, I'm still worried that it could cause too many problems.

What do you guys think? Would you Veto a character who regularly murders hookers in their downtime?

Gepetto is one of the main characters from the 2D storytime (here's one of the few edited versions floating about, this one more so than a couple of the others) and he was a cold-blooded murderer who kept his murders on the DL.

The party knew about it after a while (especially after he was turned into a vampire) but it never really got in the way because he kept his stuff pretty chill and out-of-the-way, only picking on those that the Corporations and Governments wouldn't care about.

Still, I'll play around with it, see where it goes.

>>49990017
And the time it takes to actually preform the binding ritual (1 hour per force, so 6 hours for a single force 6 binding ritual)

I suppose it's not so big of a deal if you've got some down time, but if you need to bind a force 6 spirit before a Run, and the run is in 4 hours, you're really SOL.

Also, there's the drain to consider (Again, not SO much of a big deal during downtime). Your average force 6 spirit will roll 12 dice, which will average to 4 hits, and that means 8 stun you have to try to resist. God forbid you roll low and you end up NOT binding the spirit, still got to resist drain, AND you're out the money for the reagents.

God forbid FURTHER if you want to try to bind spirits of larger magnitudes than your magic. Try to bind a force 8 spirit (Because 7 isn't that big of an improvement), and that is an average of 6 hits, which equates to resisting 12P. Fucking sucks.

And because someone will call me on it: Force 7 spirit is just over 4 successes, which is 8P you have to resist, which fucking sucks too.

And that's the AVERAGES. God forbid a spirit rolls well, and you get that force 7 spirit with 7 successes, and you're sitting there trying to survive 14p.

I can understand the idea that spending Karma on spirit services seems like a bit of a waste, but summoning spirits THAT POWERFUL in game can be a serious bitch too.

And that's not even including the tiny chances of spirits becoming free (And being very angry with you)
>>
>>49990134
>I suppose it's not so big of a deal if you've got some down time, but if you need to bind a force 6 spirit before a Run, and the run is in 4 hours, you're really SOL.
If you only have 4 hours before a run, Binding it is a moot point anyway. You can just summon it and keep it around until sunrise.

And your other concerns are even more nonsense.
>>

If I ever don't do something, it's because it's either super complicated to do and I'm putting it off or I've forgotten about it because it's not in the issue tracker. That said, I can't see a problem with the stats. Where is it wrong?

>>
>>49990154

Yes yes, summoning a spirit is a standard action, they only get their force in dice, rather than their force x2, so for a run, you'd want to just summon it anyways.

Except that you still have to resist their hits x2, so a force 6 spirit is still 4 stun you're resisting. Odds are a well made mage WILL resist it, or at least 3 of it, but going in injured isn't a good idea (And again, worrying about the spirit rolling well, or you shitty, so you get no services and still out everything).

And what is nonsense? No matter what happens, or how well you roll, the spirit summoning AND binding is their total hits x2 as either stun (Your magic and lower) or physical (Higher than your magic). If you have a month of downtime, then it's not a big deal unless you fail. But, what if it is a week?

you get body x2 per day to heal physical damage and if you're the kind of mage who dumps body, you're going to be going to the next run in a wheelchair.

In the end, summoning and binding with a lot of downtime is not usually a big issue, other than being annoying when you fail. If you're pressed for time in any way, you'd rather have spirits on hand rather than trying to get them in a hurry.

So yeah anyone got a chart on metahuman to dong size? Still trying to sort out ork dong size over here.

Got as far as Dwarf < Human = Elf < Ork < Troll.
>>
>>49990926
Are you really this autistic and/or ignorant? Penis size has nothing to do with how often you can breed. Go for prostates, Cowper's glands, and testicles. Or shit, modify the women instead. Men have never been the limit on humanoid reproduction.

If you have one of those weird BBC/semi-cuckold fetishes that's cool but don't try to justify it with pseudoscience or bring it into the thread.
>>
>>49990926

Last week, I believe, I calculated the average length of a troll dick.

if you want to figure out the size of their junk, here's some math.

The average human male is 5'6. The average human dick is 5.5 inches (Yes, really).

Figure out how tall your average Ork is. Figure out the Percentile difference between the two (Divide human height by ork height and the decimal, moved over 2, is your percent).

Then, increase the human junk by that percent and you'll get your Ork junk size.

Dwarves are shorter than humans, but have significantly more body mass. They probably have fairly large dongs, similar to orks. If you want to keep in-theme, they're probably a little on the short side, but extra thick.
>>
>>49990957
>Or shit, modify the women instead.
That's already canon. Ork women have almost exclusively multiple births. The impregnating male doesn't even enter into that equation.
>>
>>49991020

Unfortunately, this global calculation includes people with really really small dicks, as well as really really big ones. Bitch or brag or do whatever, that's the hard number, like it or not.
>>
>>49991062
That was height, not dick size, anon. Feeling insecure?
>>
>>49991072

No, surprised. Most people immediately shout down the average dick size.

Either way, same thing occurs. Tall people and short people both accounted for.

That being said, I DON'T know if people who are medically short (Dwarfism) were included in the averages.

Do all orks' tusks protrude when their mouths are closed? Or do some of them have teeth which actually remain in their mouth, becoming only obvious when their mouth is open?

I want to make an unusually normal-looking ork who most people think is just an ugly elf until they (literally) open their mouth, and I'm not sure how forbidden by the setting's actual lore that is.

A lot of orks seem to have snaggly jagged teeth instead of tusks. Some might have them inside their mouths, but generally speaking wanting to look like a different metatype requires metatype reduction. An ork is still distinctly an ork with their mouths covered. Their noses, ears, and general face shapes are different.
>>
>>49993221
Pass For Human is a quality you can buy as an ork to look human. Otherwise, you're obviously an ork.

So fomori just like Qunari right?
>>
>>49993255
>>49993260
What I actually want to look like is an elf, though - and naturally, not through surgery. Not an attractive elf or anything, and not in a way that could actually benefit a disguise, since the teeth would be visible as soon as the character speaks.

But a pointy-eared human-ish-sized person with tusks that don't protrude out of their mouth.

Or like a less-obviously-orky ork, I guess. Someone who still has all of the ork features - pointy ears, tusks, larger body mass, and so on - but whose teeth are all inside, rather than outside, their mouths. Not something that would even offer a mechanical advantage, just a milder appearance.

Is orks having teeth that are still obviously tusks but only inside of their mouths something strictly forbidden by the fluff, something that canon characters have had, or has the externality of the tusks never really been weighed in on?
>>
>>49993296
Fomorians have tusks, unlike Qunari.

Aside from that, though, yes.
>>
>>49993324
The placement of teeth/tusks is irrelevant. Even at a glance, you will look like an orc without either metatype reduction or Pass for Human.
>>
>>49993347
That works for me - like I said, I don't want it to be to the point that it offers any kind of mechanical bonus to disguise, or anything like that. Just tusks that - though still obvious while speaking - remain within the mouth when it's closed, rather than hanging out of it.
>>
>>49993378
Then yeah, it's probably tenable that an orc could have teeth in it's mouth instead of outside.

That said, no one is ever going to mistake you for an elf unless they really need to get their eyes checked.
>>
>>49993221
Ironically, Ork Poser would allow the reverse. You'd be an elf that looks like an ork, but elf poser forces the reverse.
>>
>>49993418
I'm not really looking for anything that represents an intentional effort by the character to look anything other than what they are (so no Poser or cosmetic surgery), nor anything that provides any mechanically-relevant effects for disguise. Just an ork whose tusks are innies instead of outies.

Still obviously an ork, but diverging from the median in the same way that a burly, bearded elf is still obviously an elf, just an atypical one.

They've found themselves in situations where they were either confident and willing to take something high profile or felt compelled by the plot to do something high-profile. I go out of my way to make sure that anything seriously high-profile is rare, so that when it does happen the players feel it's more natural. They don't do that thing I always did when my old GM made every single mission go wrong halfway through no matter how we planned it "for the drama," which was internally groan when every mission started and go "how's he going to fuck us THIS time?"

>If the players make a good plan and win without confrontation/conflict, let them have the easy win.
I agree, and that's how I do it. They don't realize, but about a quarter to a third of their missions--usually some of the non-plot-important ones, not that they always know which are which--I am even willing to change the situation to fit their plans because having a mission go completely right every now and again can feel really good. and get their confidence up for the next few. After all, if every mission Shadowrunners did turned into a failure or a half-failure, no one would find them useful at all.

Sometimes, as a player, it just feels good to be top dog. I've run with a GM who screwed us often enough to know that if he just let one or two of our good plans work, I wouldn't have felt nearly as resentful about the way he ran games.

The other two-thirds of the time I go according to how well they plan. Sometimes I'll randomly roll in secret to see if a snag happens; sometimes I'll introduce a small bump that they don't need to really alter their plans for, but it offers the illusion of stress and accomplishment when they get around it; and then of course there's the plot-relevant plans where things go wrong because an angle they weren't aware of is being introduced.

Between all of that, the times they actually mess up and missions go awry, they're more willing to withdraw because it's not a bitter "victory or death," mentality, and they're willing to see where in their plan they made a mistake. I feel like it goes together really well.

But then, I only realized this after being on the player end of a GM who felt that every mission was like a TV show episode--and each episode needed its own bit of tense drama outside of the inherent difficulty of the mission itself--and things would get boring if he didn't "mix it up." Fucker just didn't realize that sometimes it feels good to know that your efforts actually pay off.

Alright, I've got some shameless self promotion here. My friends and I have started a Shadowrun actual play podcast called Crit Squad, based heavily on the animated Suicide Squad movie, not the Jared Leto one. Why listen to this one? Because we sound designed the fuck out of it. It sounds like a radio play with some dice rolls. And since I know a lot of you don't get the chance to play, it might scratch that itch, at least a little. And it's not a bunch of neckbeards talking on skype, it's actually rather RP heavy. You can find episodes on whatever you use to listen to podcasts, or at http://www.shortwaverad.io/Critsquad/

Episodes are released every other Thursday, since we're busy and don't get to play a whole lot. And it takes a while to add everything in, sound-wise. If you dig it, a review on itunes does wonders on our end, and it only has to be three words long.

End of ad. Commence return to /srg/.

It's really just fucking annoying to have shit go wrong no matter what you do.

Most of the GMs I've had the misfortune of playing with presented most shit as cutscenes that couldn't be interacted with. With one of those DMs, mind control was involved in every single thing I ever 'got to do'.

No. 1 Metamagic power per Initiation grade, along with a raise of your maximum possible Magic score. It's the only way to get them.

Hey chummers, how does the matrix work in reference to military operations? Does military comms go through standard matrix channels heavily encrypted, or do they use other systems?
What if a military takes action GOD or the CC doesn't prove of? Can GOD shut down military networks if say, a coup is attempted?

If you believe the War book from SR4, yes. State and corporate militaries use commlinks to communicate just like everyone else, but with stronger forms of encryption.

If you don't, yes anyway. By SR5 "the Matrix" is sort of quasi-magical in nature and just about anything that moves information from one electronic device to another wirelessly (excepting point-to-point only devices like laser transmitters) uses the Matrix. Even if the devices don't use the standard "de la mar Matrix" protocols that other modern devices use, they're still using "the Matrix" to communicate, but your commlink probably won't see them as Matrix devices. Not impossible to hack into, but you'd run into the same issues Slamm-O and friends ran into in that SR4 book where they described trying to hack into the SR5-type nodes using their SR4-era commlinks and programs and had to basically write new code on the fly. It's easier to just assume War is still valid and militaries still use commlinks with strong encryption because no one really cares that much.

G-Men and demiGODs only have jurisdiction over their assigned sections of the matrix, so presumably they wouldn't interfere with military deckers without the CC themselves issuing some kind of sanction or something
>>
>>49998222
Private Hosts. GOD has no jurisdiction inside a Host.
>>
>>49998891
>>49998840
I see. Would GOD be feasibly able to funk with military hosts if they needed to Though? Does GOD have backdoor access or would they need to hack in a la standard decker?
Would something like a nationalist military attempting to overthrow a pro-corp government spur the CC into having GOD shut down systems in aid of loyalist forces?
>>
>>49999117
>Does GOD have backdoor access or would they need to hack in a la standard decker?
To my knowledge they don't have any secret backdoors to anything inside a private host, and would need to hack in normally. If GOD had backdoors to private hosts there would be nothing stopping them from converging on JackPoint the moment anyone hacks their way into a thread (which happens sort of frequently considering JackPoint is staffed by some of the best hackers alive).

>Would something like a nationalist military attempting to overthrow a pro-corp government spur the CC into having GOD shut down systems in aid of loyalist forces?
I don't see any reason they COULDN'T do that, but the shitstorm that would cause means they'd probably want to outsource that sort of work to someone without a corporate SIN that can be tied back to them. Why use our own assets when someone else will do it for half the price and we can't get blamed for it?

Sometimes Vitiligo can be in very obvious places, such as splotches on the face, so 'how you dress' isn't always a factor.

>>49999733

As long as you make it significant enough TO be identifiable, I'd say yeah, it would be very distinctive.
>>
>>49999775
You mean like not wearing a mask?
>>
>>49999733
So, the faggots of /srg/ seem to be under the impression that a Distinctive Style means you need to be the most recognizable, unique motherfucker who ever walked the fucking earth, and that simply isn't the case. All you need to have is:

>"at least one aspect of his appearance, mannerism, or personality that makes him inconveniently memorable. Choices for Distinctive Style include, but are by no means limited to: tattoos that cannot be easily concealed, an accent or atypical manner of speaking, bizarre fashion choices, scars, gang or prison signs, flashy custom augmentations, or non-metahuman modifcations like a tail."

Its only effect is that people gain a +2 modifier to socially track you down, and take a -1 Threshold on Memory Tests to remember you. And it's only worth 5 goddamn karma.

It's a minor-ass Quality that only requires that you have at least one trait that makes you more memorable than average. That's it. Someone with a casemodded cyberarm, a thick accent, or facial scars qualifies for it.

Almost every character, honestly speaking, probably actually qualifies for it, because almost everyone gives their character some kind of distinctive trait, to make them stand out description-wise.

Someone who has vitiligo splotches on their face definitely does qualify for Distinctive Style, without question.

Play in Egypt. Magic is outlawed under the Islamic government (excepting certain Muslim mystics), but the nature of Egypt means that there's a thriving shadow world of mages who follow the Ancient Egyptian pantheon, and an even bigger market in artifacts. The old faith is surging at the moment, trying to infiltrate political parties and change the minds of the people (who think any magic is haram), while the government tries to crush them and stay fuctioning while it also copes with breakaway Bedouins and Nubians.

Meanwhile, there's a three-way shadow war between the Draco Foundation, the Atlantean Foundation, and the Apep Consortium over who gets to be the ones to exploit the Ancient Egyptian sites for all their worth. Under the lights that flare from the Pyramids of Giza, blood is shed. The Great Dragon Masaru is rebuilding the Library of Alexandria - offshore, as legend holds no dragon can enter the land of the Nile. The Coptic part of Cairo is a hotbed of hackers and technomancers, as the Coptic Pope is using what power he has to offer sanctuary to the persecuted technos. And of course, Egypt took over what used to be Libya, so the Desert Wars are held inside their borders.

Perfect grounds to explore the Matrix/Resonance, corporate conspiracies, and transhumanism, while justifying either a totally non-Awakened party, or putting magic far in the back of the game.

What's the oldest runner you've played for? As in, character age.
>>
>>50002794
I'd say that you need to have LoS when casting and when you want it to change in a specific way, so that if you leave LoS the picture is there, it just stays the same.
Which should be fine if you want to show something static (a wall, a ravine, a turret) but be easily distinguished as false if it's something living (a critter, a person, a dragon, a moving drone)
>>
>>49993577
Maybe an Exceptional Attribute: Charisma, ork?
>>
>>50003444

Gonna answer this twice:

The oldest official character I played was 40, as an ork (I've had 40~ years as other races, but I just know that 40 is OLD for an ork, so that's why I'm considering him the oldest).

Unofficially, I had a human who was about 150 years old. He WAS geared to be a party face w/ some neat 'Old Money' contacts. I'm only counting him because he WAS cleared by the GM and was GOING to be played, but there was delay after delay, and eventually the game just fell apart, but, had it not, he was 100% playable by the GM.

(long story short on the how: Born in the 1920's, father was a political, he was rich his whole life, and he was one of the first people Leonized when the procedure was invented in the 2020's. GM let me negate the 1 million nuyen cost, but I still started with -1 full essence.)
>>

The magic has always been my least favorite part of shadowrun, I'd be all about a game that has it as a subtle thing at most.

Yeah, that could be fun. Play an ork with 100% all-natural, no magic, no surgery Charisma 6. Attractive face, teeth that are all inside of the mouth even if they're obviously tusks once the mouth is open, but still an obviously ork-style robust build and pointed ears.

I'm going to sound like such a fucking sue, but "battle-mage," with some support elements.

I like playing Sams, but my past two characters were casters. To solve the whole "geek the mage first," thing I basically ran those characters as street soldiers minus the 'ware (basically telling anyone who asked it was a few pieces of good bio, so leave me be), with a lot of points in counter-spelling and support/healing magic.

So I can cast some, but my past few characters have only had one backup offensive spell each. The other stuff was all support and shutting down enemy mages; at which point the fact that I am a high-speed low-drag longarm operator comes into its own.

It also helps that it's a bit difficult for foes to tell just who the mage in the party is (if there is one, as our GM goes with the lore that magic is actually supposed to be rare) because I look like the others instead of some trenchcoat-wearing fop. So I usually get a few chances to establish magic superiority before I'm targeted and that typically gives us an edge in gunfights.

Otherwise I really like combat medics and weapon masters with jack-of-all-stats-styled skill spreads.
>>
>>50006331
It heals damage. The mechanics are very, very clear. The fluff is explicitly open to table variation. It fixes up your body, but it leaves it up to you to decide whether it hurts, feels like a hell of an itch, goes numb, or whatever. Same for scarring or no scars and whether shrapnel stays in the body. Basically, your body functions perfectly, but there's no guarantee as to cosmetics.
>>
>>50006245

The Face. you have the opportunities to wield more power than anyone else in the party, and you're rewarded for just being clever.

There was an infiltration mission once. me and the decker were more or less uninvolved, but the sam and adept screwed up. One call to the hotel, and one bomb threat later, I was able to stall the police and the guards long enough for them to get the hell out.

I was able to talk one of the Mafia Dons into surrendering a VIP. Since the Mafia is so anti-magic, I was able to con him into thinking that we had a 'black magic ritual' prepared for him. Said some bullshit about getting his DNA from some dinner he had when he ate out, used it as a material link, and that they were going to make him bleed out of every orifice if he didn't comply.

Among other shenanigans like that. Plus, you typically get free drinks when you lie your way into people thinking you're a VIP.

So due to a convoluted course of events involving a certain arcology, a missed session, some kind of implant and a rather upmarket operating theatre, my current character is in talks with an AI (or some kind of non-human being at least) who has informed me that it has implanted a killswitch in me (the term carcerands was involved, as was a rather mangled Malteaser metaphor). Thankfully my character is the party face, and as such diplomacy is an option here, but the issue remains: how do I best screw with this AI without accidentally or deliberately getting myself killed? Naturally, there's a "don't tell anyone" clause in effect, and the implant can trace vital signs and potential magical interference, so getting the mage to just blow the implant up isn't an option either. My current plan is to insinuate that whoever this thing is is in reality Donkey Kong, but that's just needless antagonism and I'd like more of a game plan than winding up the thing with the finger on the killswitch.

1 in every hundred people is some minor, basic-ass type of Awakened - that's counting Magic 1 Adepts, Awakened shit like ghouls and sasquatches, and Magic 1 Aspected Magicians who don't even know that they're Awakened.

People who can do real/serious magic - or who even know they're Awakened - are much rarer. And that's aside from the fact that it's a relatively new field.

Magic could easily be a mysterious, spooky, rare force in the world, that almost nobody's ever even experienced, let alone actually understands.

But unfortunately, that's not how Shadowrun is written. It's written in a way that, if anything, goes out of its way to demystify magic whenever possible, and make all of its 'mysteries' just be shit that people are studying but haven't published formal papers on yet.
>>
>>50006245
Street Samurai.

When everything goes right you don't have to do anything at all, and when Plan A fails you always get to be Plan B. Violence is the hard counter to almost any situation too - someone's going to struggle to talk their way out of a bullet to the head or hacking someone into uselessness before they get killed, but there are few problems that can't be solved by applying the appropriate type of ammunition to the scene-appropriate center of mass.

You're the universal insurance policy - the one that everyone hopes they won't need, but everyone knows they probably will.
>>
>>50006331
You don't need to remove shrapnel for any kind of healing. All wounds can be healed through bedrest alone - no need for first aid or magic - even things that logically shouldn't. Wounds that require extra, additional attention are the domain of GM fiat.

Or you could try bluffing it. Keep talking for a while, and then say something along the lines of "Thanks for staying on the line long enough for my decker friend to find you. My my, I never would have looked there... Anyways, we're both civil people here, yes? Why can't we speak like civil people, not savages blowing up one the others' brain, hm?"

I need more details (Like, being there level of details) for anything better.

It's way too difficult to have something be mystic and mysterious in an information age. When everyone is going to have some sort of exposure to the possibility and you have things like Hollywood making shit that involves it, there's no chance that it's going to be some dark, shadowy thing; especially in an environment that's as exploitation-focused as Shadowrun's.

It's a fair argument that there's not enough populace for people to know about it on a personal level, but that entirely ignores how many people have access to the greatest repository of information that metahumankind has ever had access to. Even if a lot of that information is wrong, it doesn't matter. Enough people are going to know that it exists that making it shadowy and mysterious is going to be really difficult.
>>
>>50007046

Yeah, the mafia is extremely traditional, and they stick to Cyberware and tech, avoiding magic and shit (Which is why they've been facing such trouble from the Yakuza and the Triad, who openly embrace magic)
>>

>"Thanks for staying on the line long enough for my decker friend to find you

Annoyingly, there seems to be no wireless signal inside this arcology. Not to mention our group's decker has gone full war based PTSD on us and has swapped out decking for high explosive ammo and using that to solve all his problems. He literally one shot an encounter in the last session because he got so many hits with explosive ammunition and the three of them were close enough together to be caught in the blast radius.

I strongly disagree.

If only 1% of people are Awakened, and probably 99% of those are shit like 'magic 3 or less Adepts' or other people who don't know shit about whether they're Awakened or how magic works, you could easily have tons of superstition and misinformation built up around magic. Shit that's straight up wrong - and more than wrong, contradictory - to the point that nobody really knows shit about anything, and it's all one big spooky 'what the fuck' to anyone who isn't balls-deep in it already.

You see this all the time with shit in real life - whether it's the retards in real life who have massive exposure to computers on a daily basis yet bought into Y2K, or think that hackers can do spooky control-any-technology Hollywood shit, or people who's knowledge of how espionage and conspiracies works comes from Bond and Bourne spy thrillers.

You're likely to see people whose only experience with magic are ghost stories and that one horribly-inaccurate anime about the oni schoolgirl who was a magical shinto priestess, and who suddenly just walked in on a legit-as-fuck mage kneeling in a circle of candles and chanting as smoky figures whisper from the shadows in the corners of the room.

That's the Shadowrun that you could have easily had.

But they went the opposite direction with it. Not because they couldn't do the former, or because the former was too hard, but because that's just what they chose - they liked it better, or didn't even think about it as a choice in the first place.

And regardless of whether you like it or dislike it (dislike it in my case) that's just how it is - magic is completely demystified in Shadowrun, closer to being another Matrix-like realm that's well-understood but inaccessible to 99% of people than it is to being a spooky, mystical force.

That's it.

I don't really know WHAT the AI (or whatever) knows at this point, beyond the fact that this implant tracks my location and vital signs (which presumably is meant to be a counter to lying, but I'm not sure how effective it'll be). Also, bluffing that the decker has cut the link between the implant and the carcerands is a BIG bluff, especially when you consider that he can be... erratic. On top of that, stating that the decker has cut the link would imply that I told the decker about it, which violates the "don't tell anyone" clause.

Fair enough argument, but there's nothing stopping you from running it like that.

My own GM has a strong habit of giving us a sense of mystery regarding mages by having them actually be rare. Any time we see one we know we're interacting with a group that is either incredibly influential and powerful enough to have access to someone with such abilities; or exceptionally lucky to have access to someone who is either self-taught or has a mage that felt he agreed with their cause.

My own group is typically the latter. My GM always places a "no more than one caster per group," rule and will sometimes ask that no one roll an Awakened character in the first place in a lower-level game.

This gives us an interesting lack of magical interaction, and what we see is often either mages in media that he describes or or the few professional communities that often compete with each other behind the scenes for access to those rare Awakened individuals; including the professional Shadow community. We are, after all, playing professionals who want access to those kinds of assets. But outside of these communities? What people know is information that media like the internet, movies, film, books, and comics offer, and grumpy public casters who are upset at how the media portray it.

I like the style and the feeling it gives us, and offer that there's no reason you cannot have it do the same. Take those same grievances you're bitching at us about, put them in a much better-formatted document, and hand it to your players.

Nah, I'm good with just accepting Shadowrun for what it is, rather than trying to make it into something that it isn't. I'll go to another system for the type of magic that I actually like. I was just explaining to you the way I like it, that Shadowrun easily could have been what I like, but ultimately wasn't, isn't, and won't be.

You can dislike how something is, wish that it had been something else, and want it to change into something different, without actually having any inclination to make it happen.

You know, like how most people think the NANs are giga-retarded but aren't going to do fucking anything to change them, or how even GMs who ban SURGE at their tables still have it be present in the setting.
>>
>>50007530
I'm going to sound so retarded right now, but what is SURGE? Clearly my GM doesn't like it, because I've never heard of it as an option or during a game.
>>
>>50007584
During ambient mana spikes, some people suddenly mutate into extreme freaks, manifesting physical mutations often at seemingly-random.

It's mostly used to either play as furries, or to play minmaxed collections of specific mechanical traits that someone wanted.

In-setting, it's used to create people who are even freakier freaks to form outcaste communities.

http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Sudden_Unexplained_Recessive_Genetic_Expression
>>
>>50007584
Sudden Unexpected Recessive Genetic Expression. Changelings who get random furfag mutations. They're almost exclusively played by furfags and munchkins, so they get a bad rep.
>>
>>50007613
>>50007623
Sounds dumb.
>>
>>50007652
Originally it seems like it's supposed to be used to create certain magical races that might not otherwise be included. The kind of magical freaks you see mentioned in myths all over, but never got traction as D&D races for one reason or another so they aren't a main metatype.
>>
>>50007652
It's a good idea that made sense in-setting, but instantly went full retard the very second it touched player hands.

You know, same as HMHVV.
>>
>>50007668
An interesting idea, I guess? As a toolkit. But I can see why one would ignore it like my GM does.

>>50007669
One thing I wish didn't happen. The only good characters I've ever seen from HMHVV were the two characters from Hong Kong, Geppetto, and one vampire from a game I was in. The only reason I liked the character was because he had no idea what he was from a meta perspective. He was so afraid of what he had become that he wasn't able to get access to information.
>>
>>50007478
>that character and/or clothes aren't even in the game

JUST
>>
>>50006245
Spellcasting is fun.
>>
>>50007669
One day, I'm going to pitch an awakened character with SURGE 1 and Bad Rep from the idea of growing up inside a powerful Toxic's lodge.

Nobody really knew that this guy was a toxic because, well, you get shit on by a corp bad enough and you start wishing all kinds of horrible things on them.

But then some of the kids started showing wierd stuff, and the guy got run out of town (spirit prevented a lynching). Hopefully the random traits aren't too bad, and it also gives an opportunity to find and hunt somebody down.
>>
>>50007075
Now I'm imagining a parallel wizard mafia made up of mages disowned by mob families who banded together and decided to take back what (they think) should be theirs.

Neuromancer is great. His other works are good too. If you're looking for more cyberpunk reads check out Altered Carbon and Snowcrash as well.
>>
>>49995072
Be warned, some sections get kinda confusing and it's been a while since I read it but I remember Neuromancer having weird pacing.
>>
>>50007907
Combine it with HMHVV and a Sasquatch to go full sue.

>Sasquatch toxic mage SURGEs inside of a strongly-aspected toxic mana spike, and in the ensuing chaos that happens after something like that gets bit by a ghoul

Sasquatches are the only metasapient that can become a ghoul, and non-humans are very much susceptible to SURGE, you see.
>>
>>50007115
Oh dear you're the renkaru fellow aren't you.
Anyway, my advice would be to do what the thing with the killswitch says.
>>
>>50007909
So like a Saints Row game, or Mafia III, but what happens to set them in particular apart is being a mafia wizgang.
>>
>>50007968

Yep, I'm the Renraku fellow. I knew a 100k nuyen paycheck was too good to be true...
>>
>>50007964
Nah. Gotta be human unless it's in a particularly optimized group. Then go elf and a Cha tradition.

(You know, to fit with the minimal amount of SURGE. Just hope that the random mutations aren't too bad.)
>>
>>50008127
>building Charisma on a SURGE character
I guess you're not afraid of the Freak penalties, then.

Usability question for you guys; I'm redoing the attribute controls in order to support making shapeshifters in Chummer. As part of this, you'll now only see the attributes that are enabled for you. No MAG stat for a mundane, for example. Would you consider it helpful to preserve the amount of points you've put into an attribute if you were to remove an attribute and add it again? Like you add adept, set your MAG to six, then remove it and add magician. Currently it preserves the value, but I'm not sure if there's any benefit to it.
>>
>>50008560
Yeah, that'd be pretty useful. Also, Cannibalize doesn't appear to be showing up for Mystic Adepts, under the blood magic metamagics.
>>
>>50008480
It's Surge 1. I'm pretty sure that the worst is -2 from freak penalties, and they wouldn't apply to the thing I really want that high Cha for.

But I'd have to actually read those tables to see how likely getting a penalty of 2 is.
>>
>>50008480
The qualities that give Freak don't help Charisma, so there's no point in taking them in the first place
>>
>>50008603
Oh, right. Bloody mystic adepts. It's failing because of the Adepts Only flag. Should be an easy fix.

If I'm understanding correctly, I think the stat values should be cleared when they no longer apply to a character. Keeps them from hanging about and being used inadvertently behind the scenes.
>>
redpill me on dragon cultists, /srg/
>>
>>50008634
It's SURGE 1. I don't get to choose, and the tables are much more arcane than I remembered.

I think that at SURGE 1 turns a roll of 6 on any positive trait roll into a reroll. So I could wind up with a worse freak penalty than I thought, because it's got a wider range of stuff to select from than I initially thought.
>>
question srg nerds.
Have people found good ways to make combat get less bogged down with constant rolls? Not that we hate rolling dice but 3 rolls per attack can take up a lot of time.
I'm considering turning either the defense roll or the soak roll into a simple average result of the pool type thing, probably the soak roll.
example: instead of an armor vest granting 12 dice it just upfront gives 4 soak, 3 if we go with armor just buying hits all the time.
How terrible of an idea is this?
In a similar vein have people ever attempted lifting SR crunch into a homebrew/homebrew setting?
>>
>>50008872
Go read SR4's arsenal, it had some alternative ideas for it
>>
>>50008951
all i found were additional modifiers, in the advanced combat rules section.
>>
>>50008795
Yeah, that's my major concern. In most cases it's not a problem since we hide most of those checks behind whether or not the stat is enabled, but there's probably a few edge cases I'd have to winkle out.

Elemental Aura applies to melee attacks made with weapons, right?
>>
>>50009670
No problem, anon. Keep in mind that like all rules-lite systems it's missing a few things, but it does leave enough space that making some stuff it's missing is truly quite simple.

Also if you want to borrow a couple of things from the core system (explosives, for example, as the system unfortunately forgot to stat their grenades and plastique) then it's better to borrow from 4A instead of 5th; Anarchy tones down the numbers to closer to 4A size than 5th size.

>>
>>50010792
You mean that wasn't the problem with the power?
>>
>>50010835
I'm not even seeing where you see groping at all.

The problem is "It imposes a -1 Perception dice pool modifier per level of Light Touch to anyone observing or being targeted by the adept."

The REASON it's a problem is because it doesn't say "When pickpocketing", or any qualifiers. Are you observing the adept trying to sneak? Yeah? Congrats, you've got the penalty.
>>
>>50010904
>The REASON it's a problem is because it doesn't say "When pickpocketing"
Hmm.

>It imposes [a penalty] to anyone observing or being targeted by the adept
Targeted for what? Observing what?

>Light Touch allows the adept greater control in palming or pickpocketing
Oh, right. This is a palming/pickpocketing power, and you don't get to selectively read "observing" outside the context of the power.
>>
>>50011053
Anon. I understand the intent of the power. I get that. The actual part where it says rules? It doesn't say "Observed while attempting to pickpocket", it says "Observered."

As in flat-out all-access Pixie Concealment.
