Other countries don't have the history nor the internal infrastructure to actually be independent. Texas does.

Would an independent Texas take a quality of life hit? Yes.

Would an independent Texas collapse? Not due to economic or political reasons, only possibly due to social division on the idea of secession to begin with, which would occur no matter how successful or unsuccessful a state would be on its own.

For the record, California could also theoretically secede and survive on its own, but unlike Texas they do not have the internal infrastructure already existing to be completely independent - it would need to be created from scratch.

Being a Bostonian, my complaints about Texas are threefold.

1) The place is too damn flat. I never realized I had mild agoraphobia until I was in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and realized that on a clear day I could see one city on one horizon and another city on the opposite horizon. I missed my hills and trees, and the lack was just plain unnatural. It unnerves me that Texas is by far not even the flattest state. I don't want to know what Kansas looks like.

2) Texans fly their flag at the same height as the American flag. While I recognize that there is no formal law governing how American or State flags should be flown, tradition in 49 of the 50 states is that a State flag should be flown at a lower height than the Stars and Stripes, as is supported by the US Flag Code (which is, again, merely guidelines and codification of tradition, not law). I don't mind an individual good ol' boy flying his flag at the same height as the US flag in his own backyard, but for the whole state to make a habit out of it bothers me immensely. Only sovereign nations should fly flags at equal height, and Texas is not.

The sheer promulgation of Texas state flags also threw me off. I spent half the time I was in Texas wondering if I should be stopping by the local American embassy to check in.

3) The Texas Revolution was about, among other things, slavery. The fact that Mexico abolished slavery, was one of the major complaints the Tejanos had against the Mexican government, since American settlers had brought a number of slaves with them and did not want to emancipate them despite having agreed to abide by Mexican law.

While slavery was not as central an issue to the conflict as it would be in the US Civil War, the fact remains that it was a major issue. Texans never, EVER own up to this fact, however.

In a roundabout way, though, this led into the Civil War and subsequent end of slavery. So at least things worked out in the end...thanks to Mexico.
