wait what is paizo making an attempt at spelljamer now
when was this announced how long have i been away from /tg/ for

and most importantly will it be as crap as pathfinder itself is.
>>
>>49963631
Spelljammer's always been one of those things that I've always been interested in but never can seem to find much information on. So a new take on the concept is welcome to me.
>>
I'm distinctly sceptical of the quality, but they're supposedly promising a cube of sentient goo as a playable race, so I'll at least give it a go.

http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5litw?Announcing-the-Starfinder-Roleplaying-Game
ok so its set in a possible future
but im unsure what they are talking about with the planet getting moved are they saying that the main pathfinder planet is moved to another solar system and they spread out from there.

if so why pathfinder already has a solar system to build on.

anyway as much as i think pathfinder is a step down from 3.5 in almost every way im kind of excited for this it will be especially interesting to see the sort of stuff that will happen with the gods when ported to space probably much moreso then any of the greyhawk gods.

i hope that the new classes get really cool shit at level 20 as thats the one place pathfinder itself was actually better then its predecesor.

in my experience in 3e a lot of the complaining that martials were underpowered was because people weren't making proper use of magic swords with a sci fi setting players are less likely to not bother bother with fancy gear and more importantly it will lead to less dms saying lol im gonna make magic equipment hard to get in my games balance be damed

one major problem though is that even in the 3e days the skill system was shit it gave wizards far to many skill points and totally shafted fighters in a sci fi setting skills are likely to be even more important.
>>
>the setting

>It's set in Golarion's solar system, far in a possible future in which Golarion is missing—the gods say it's safe, but won't say what happened to it. In its former orbit is a massive space platform called Absalom Station.
>History is obscured in the Starfinder setting, as an unknown amount of time has been mysteriously and completely wiped from everyone's memories and all known records—even those on the Outer Planes. This blank period between ancient and modern history is called the Gap, and while it effects the entire multiverse, the edges aren't all in the same place. For instance, one planet might remember back 300 years, while another remembers back 305—these inconsistencies are the primary references some Starfinders use to piece together the secret history of the universe.
>There's faster than light travel in Starfinder, via a hyperspace dimension gifted by an ascended AI deity.
>All the core Pathfinder races will still exist and be playable with the Core Rulebook, yet Starfinder's core races are different, and include humans, lashunta, ysoki (ratfolk), androids, kasatha, and two races not yet revealed.
>In addition, there's going to be a heavy emphasis on introducing more alien player races. Where possible, you should be able to play the creatures you encounter.
>There's still plenty of magic in the setting, but technology has become a dominant force. For instance, if you're playing an Iomedaean crusader, you might wear holy powered armor and carry a plasma cannon carved with magical runes.
>Will continue Pathfinder's legacy of being as diverse and inclusive as possible.
>>
>the gameplay

>There will be seven core classes on release: the technomancer (magical hacker blending technology and magic), mechanic (engineer with a robot buddy), solarian (mystical melee combatant harnessing the cycles of the stars), soldier (heavy weapons specialist), envoy (diplomat and ally-booster), mystic (caster channeling strange energies to manipulate biological systems), and operative (stealthy skill specialist).
>Star Wars is a decent comparison, tone-wise, but Starfinder will have more magic and moral ambiguity. Other inspirations include Firefly, Shadowrun, the Expanse series, and more—if we could do for space opera what Shadowrun did for 1980s cyberpunk, we'd be ecstatic.
>Starfinder puts an even greater focus on exploration than Pathfinder, as the setting pushes many adventurers out toward a galaxy full of uncontacted worlds. While you can play whole adventures or campaigns on a single world if you want, the assumption is that the PCs are probably the crew of a starship.
>Starship battles will be a significant element in the game, with their own combat system utilizing miniatures, but not as common as ordinary character-scale combat.
>There will not be an open playtest—instead, there will be a closed playtest will feature other RPG designers and third-party publishers, Pathfinder Society members, and various key members of the industry and community. While we wish we could open the playtest up to everyone, the timeframe involved and scope of the playtest simply make it impractical. (Unlike Pathfinder's class playtests, in order to make this one work, we have to give people the entire game.
>The plan is to produce a Starfinder Reference Document (like the PRD) and make it available for free online.
>Starfinder will have an OGL-like compatibility license allowing for third-party products.
>Starfinder organized play is something we're actively investigating, but not ready to announce anything about just yet.
>>
>>49963631
It will be as crap as Pathfinder. They will even let you convert monster from Pathfinder into Starfinder, so expect the same shit (bloat HP etc)
>>
>>49963631
It's less like Spelljammer and more like Cosmic outer space stuff in Marvel or DC.
>>
>>49963795
>It's set in Golarion's solar system, far in a possible future in which Golarion is missing
so the members of a golrian race will be descended from those that were off planet at the time i dont really see the point but ok
>History is obscured in the Starfinder setting
could be interesting and having some planets remember more then others is certainly an idea that has potential. however i expect this aspect to be almost entirely droped in a few years
>There's faster than light travel in Starfinder
how available will it be mass produced enough its on all but small ships designed for runs between a planet and nearby moons or expensive enough that few ships have it.
if the second option will players start with ftl
>via a hyperspace dimension gifted by an ascended AI deity.
oh the ai deity could be interesting
>there's going to be a heavy emphasis on introducing more alien player races
neat hope theres some good variety and not just all humanoid so they can make equipment easier to manage
>Where possible, you should be able to play the creatures you encounter.
i hope they dont mess with the existing player monster rules to much they work fairly well.
>There's still plenty of magic in the setting, but technology has become a dominant force.
hope they can keep a good balance
>Will continue Pathfinder's legacy of being as diverse and inclusive as possible.
you know what fine if it comes with diversity of aliens alongside it i dont even care anymore

what would be interesting is to explore things like races where transexuals make up 10% of the population or something
>>
>>49963812
>if we could do for space opera what Shadowrun did for 1980s cyberpunk, we'd be ecstatic.
lol the game might still be good but no all the worst aspects of the pathfinder system are the aspects that are most likely to be converted intact
>Starfinder puts an even greater focus on exploration than Pathfinder
be fun to see what dms come up with (and without a fancy new setting to set everything in people are more likely to notice the cracks in the rules then they did with pathfinder
>Starship battles will be a significant element in the game
i wonder how in depth these rules will be i would rather more detailed stuff but if its gonna happen semi often it has to be fairly abstracted

starship combat uses a hex map rather than the square-based maps of normal combat. Additionally, everyone involved in starship combat has a crew role—a specific suite of actions that only they can take to use their ship's abilities or affect its performance. In this picture we see Captain Mike Kenway, Engineer Jason Keeley, Science Officer Owen KC Stephens, Gunners Erik Mona and Sarah Robinson, and Pilot Rob McCreary. Jason Bulmahn is, of course, the enemy ships trying to kill them.
>>
>>49963967
Hmm.... I'll wait and see if their ship combat stands up or if it's just "use one skill that you invest everything into for your one job" sort of thing that it tends to be for d20 system based stuff.
>>
it will be the spaceship combat rules that make or break this
we already know most of how everything else will work but spaceship combat is paizos chance to show that contry to appearances they can actually design stuff.
>>
>>49963659
>but they're supposedly promising a cube of sentient goo as a playable race
...the ability to play as a spacefaring gelatinous cube is really warming me up to the idea.
>>
>>49964113
well you can already do that really just a few minor rule bends and you should be fine
now a spacefaring gelationus cube baked right into the game is a whole other story.
>>
>>49964113
>>49964180
I'll steal it for 5th edition
>>
>>49964394
but 5th is even worse then pathfinder
>>
>>49964657
At what, pray tell?
>>
>>49964851
being fun
although as long as we are talking about races then yeah probably is a good idea to steal from pathfinder because theres not much in the way of monster race rules in 5th
>>
i wonder what that central space station will be like
>>
>>49963928
>Balance
>Pathfinder
Magic trumps all again, but this time wearing a space opera skin.
>>
>>49965566
Absalom.
