Never had a chance to do D&D because I don't know enough people to start it.
Are there any sites I could use to get my fix online?
roll20

roll20 is good in that you don't have to pay anything etc.
Expect finding a group to still be a pain in the arse. A lot of flakes.

How does roll20 work? Do you need a camera and mic?

You will probably need a mic to talk to the other players and the DM, but not a cam.
Most don't even use the voice chat built into roll20, instead opting for discord or Skype.

you can't just type?

that would be such a pain in the ass honestly

Games are divided into three Audio-Visual categories:
Video and Voice
Voice
Text Only
Voice is the most common, requiring just a microphone.
From time to time you'll come across a game that insists you have Video as well, these are usually tryhards trying to make a YouTube series out of their game.
Text Only is probably the least common of the three, but they certainly turn up often enough. They're fine, to be honest, though paced a lot more slowly compared to voice games.

Type only people are a minority, I'm part of it but for me its not a problem because of the experience I had before getting into roll20, RPing in chats
