What is the helmet on Merlins head called? Is it just a made up costume head piece for the movie Excalibur or does it have historical precedence?
>>
>>49920324
It's a skull cap. There's some evidence that they were worn underneath some actual helmets.
>>
>>49920324
It's a very large skullcap or very small barbute

In the 17th century they did wear close fitting metal skull caps under their fancy hats. As for Merlins metal skull cap I think it is more Ming the Merciless of Flash Gordon fame then actually based on a real object.

I love the weird way he talks. That's it!

Earlier. 12th-13th century.

you're probably right in thinking that merlin's cap is probably not based on them, though
>>
>>49920324
Skull caps were close-fitting steel helmets which could be worn under a coif (which could then be covered by a greathelm) Later versions were called 'secrets' and were worn under hats or wigs. It's wildly un-historical for merlin to be wearing one, but all the costuming in the film is gloriously silly.

"secrets"? As in, it was a concealed piece of protection underneath your hat in case someone suddenly tried to stab you on the crown?

Random fact : John Boorman (the director) wanted him to shave his head (to contrast with all the other hairy men, slaves to their passions), but the actor refused

Reminds me of that weird as fuck scene in Deathstalker. It's so strange and particularly out of place in such a macho film, I wonder why no one ever mentions it.

It's actually pretty neat.
It took me 17 years to like it, but now I wouldn't change it for the world

Cool I assume this is from something German? What is it?

Otherworld miniatures has this guy which I am currently using as my wizard in our Adventurer Conqueror King game set in the old White Wolf Studios Shattered Lands setting.

Das Schwarze Auge aka The Dark Eye.

It keeps frightening americans with how rule-heavy it is despite most rules being optional. It is still pretty oldschool tho.
>>
>>49920705
That's pretty unique. Were your parents some kind of hippies or nerds when you were born?
>>
>>49920607

The only guy I know named Merlin for real was a really nice guy I met at a SCA event in Cali. He was from the Bay Area San Fran. I felt like a total ass because I was teasing him about his persona name. Then he showed me his drivers license from his belt pouch. Said his parents were hippies. His was used in a car commerical. I believe for a Japanese SUV. The helmet was traveling down a rolling conveyor belt into a giant vat of molten metal. Supposedly melting down various bad ass things that were suppose to be going into the metal that made the car. I think it was a Japanese SUV. Can't remember.

Is it in English yet. I seem to recall a Kickstarter. I mean I'm 35 and have enough games that if I was locked in a cell with them we couldn't play them all before we died. But what the hell. If its in English I'll buy it!

My only beef with the system is magic - 90% of the spells are complete garbage or very situations and 10% are straight up broken.
>>
>>49920912
It has the potential to be a fun film, but looking at how bad Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes was I think I'll remain sceptical until I see it on the theatre.
At least The Man From UNCLE was pretty good.

Yeah its hard to disagree with that. The magic has a very science-y approach and many of the spells are very situational.

That said, back in the day the Players Box came with an actual spell book that described how every spell is pronounced and what gestures you are supposed to do while casting and the DMs Handbook actually encouraged the DM to make caster-players cast the spells at the table for a bonus/malus depending on how well the player performed the casting.

I found his Sherlock films to both be sleep inducing, while Man From UNCLE was just simple fun.
