Wanting to get into 40k, thought the Night Lords looked cool, anyone know what they do? I currently play AOS and fantasy battles.

Bump cuse I always wonder if 40k is worth or not

Will it only end up being tank hammer?

How are the new rules and edition?

I'd probably want to play Space Wolves

Lore-wise or crunch-wise?

The Night Lords were one of the original Space Marine Legions to go rouge. Unlike the other traitors, the Night Lords didn't fall to Chaos, and are just renegade marines.

They love jump-packs, being sneaky, stabbing people, and more than anything: scaring the fucking shit out of people. Their MO is terror tactics and psychological warfare.

In terms of gameplay they're a bit kneecapped by having to share a Codex with Chaos Space Marines, despite them not using Chaos power. You could run, maybe, a Raven Guard Chapter Tactics instead. They also leave a lot of room open for converting, since you might want them to look more "Night Lord" than "Chaos".

Their Primarch (now dead) was Konrad Curze, who was like if you took the hybrid spawn of The Punisher, Batman, and Marlon Brando in Apocalypse now, and made him an emo psychopath.

The Night Lores ARE Chaos Marines, just like any other Traitor Legion. Ten millenia in the Eye does things to you. It's just they don't embrace Chaos willingly like other Legions, thus lesser number of mutated, crazed, Chaos-infused marines. There are still Night Lord Demon Princes, Sorcerers, so frorth.

To answer >>49907863 , the problem is to play 40k Night Lords you have to use Codex:Chaos Space Marines, as mentioned above, which is one of the weakest books currently. Making a fluffy force would require you to strongly limit Chaos powered units in your army, and take a lot of Raptors and/or Warp Talons, none of which will get you a good, winning list.

Then again, if you just want to play friendly games for fun, a fast, assault based Night Lords force looks, feels and plays cool.

For detailed info about the Legion I suggest visiting Lexicanum wikia.

Do the Night Lords spend time in the Eye of Terror? I know they've had a large amount of offshoot warbands that have embraced Chaos, but I thought that the Night Lords proper hated Chaos as much as they hate the Imperium, and shun those who embrace it - unless it's crusade time, in which case they'll tag along for the chance to scare people.

There are great many warbands of Night Lords, some greater, working on their own, some smaller, often working together as a part of a Chaos Lord's force.

Those warbands differ from each other. Some are Chaos-hating bands of pirates, some, like the biggest warband, led by Night Lord Demon Prince Acerbus, are filled with Chaos infused maniacs.

Either way, most Traitor Legionarries spend most of the time either in the Eye or other warp-wound, like the Mealstorm. Reason is, they didn't go there after the heresy because they liked it so much, they went there because the Loyalist cannot follow them there.

In the game, Night Lords specialise in lots of fast moving, yet relatively fragile units. Basically, spamming jump pack troops. Actually, apart from 3rd Edition there's never been a better time to run this set-up, as Chaos Marines just recieved a new set of formations, which includes one for running the aforementioned jump troops.

This formation is ridiculously fluffly for Night Lords. It lets you assault immediately on dropping onto the board (fast) and opponents drop leadership if two or more units charge them (scary) making them easier to run off the board.

HOWEVER. Generally, Chaos Marines are one of the lower tier codexes, just because they pay only slightly less for a much worse set-up than their Loyalist cousins. 40k in general is due for a shake-up, as the last edition didn't really change anything. If I were you, I'd buy a cheap box of Raptors, paint them up, play Kill Team, and then work your way into mainline 40k if you still feel like it.

>I always wonder if 40k is worth or not
Not immediately, and not if you don't get anything from the hobby apart from playing the games (such as painting/modelling/converting/lore).

>Will it only end up being tank hammer?
Not really. Every army has pretty good anti-tank solutions and tanks usually pay a hefty premium for their armour, so there are fewer of them. Only a few armies have problems with massed tanks.

>How are the new rules and edition?
Not really new at this point, and not even when it came in. It's basically the old edition with bits from supplements thrown in. I still like it though, it's 40k.

>I'd probably want to play Space Wolves
One of the few armies left that can actually do really well in melee. Apparently good fun to play.

Ave Dominus Nox, my Nostraman brethren.

Playing Night Lords in 40k is possible I do it but I'd recommend doing them in 30k/Horus Heresy instead. Like some other posters have mentioned it's much better for fluffy options. It's also a more balanced game in general.
Whichever way you go, you're gonna be heavily focused on assault/close combat; spend your extra points there first. I took Mark of Slaanesh on everything I could for dat initiative.

Don't play 40k. Your rules are garbage and you will hate yourself. If anything, use 30k rules, and play against 40k. You can actually run your legion the way it was meant, and you can run your primarch if you want.
