X-Parasite form: When SA-X drops to 0 hit points, it transforms into a flying ooze. While in this form it cannot take any actions, speak, or manipulate objects. It is weightless, has a flying speed of 20 feet, can hover, and can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. After being undisturbed for 1 hour, it regenerates 1 hitpoint and can return to its humanoid form.

Plus a bunch of magic items to account for the power armor that I'm too lazy to type out.

But SA-X would make reproduction so much easier. She's literally a sentient giant virus, she can only spread herself and reproduce.

Can Samus even have children? She's like this Chozo-human hybrid and after Fusion, she's also part metroid now. If anything, all that hybridization must have made her infertile.

Not to mention, possibly immortal. Chozo died of old age, but only after a really long time. Add the Metroid DNA to that, and you have some pretty strange bio-chemistry,

Unfortunately, because Sakamoto is basically Japanese George Lucas and also retarded, he's stated in a Q&A that Samus doesn't have Metroid DNA anymore. Apparently, absorbing the SA-X and the Ice Beam let her "recover her genetic condition."

Personally I'm not going to accept that bullshit as canon until it appears in a good Metroid game, but I thought you guys should know.

>Metroid/Zero Mission
Ex-Federation Trooper turned bounty hunter, Samus Aran, takes a commission to interfere with Space Pirate research efforts on her childhood home, Zebes. Samus blows up the planet.

>Prime
Samus discovers a Space Pirate research station, wipes it out. A metroid/mutagen/clone of Samus escapes.

>Prime Hunters
Samus fucks off to another Galaxy to collect a bounty, kills a giant space wizard.
Was also *the* arena FPS game for the DS.

>Prime 2
The galactic federation discovers Phazon, but Space Pirates have already built up a large reserve. Also there's a giant Phazon monster eating the planet.

>Prime 3
Giant Phazon monsters try to eat 4 planets. Samus destroys the half-eaten Space Pirate Homeworld. They rebuild on the Giant Phazon Monster Homeworld. Samus destroys that, too.

>Federation Force
Without Phazon, the few surviving Space Pirate's infrastructure collapses. Federation efforts to reverse engineer Chozo tech are finally bearing (shoddy) fruit. Samus unroots the last of the Space Pirate bases while 4 idiots durdle around in Mechs.

>Metroid 2
Samus goes to SR388 to wipe out the Metroid species. They were genetically engineered by the Chozo to keep a "the Thing" style menace at bay.

>Super Metroid
The Space Pirates make their last stand at Zebes. Samus blows up the planet (again) and drives them extinct.

>Other M
Non-canon.

>Fusion
X-Parasites on SR388 ruin Federation plans to clone Metroids. Also threaten to end the Galaxy. One almost eats Samus, but she's saved by Metroid gene therapy. She then wipes them out then blows up the planet.

Yeah, the entire Prime series is between Metroid 1 and 2. It's mostly because in Prime, Metroids are still around, while Metroid 2 is the game where Samus wipes out the entire Metroid species (save one). It wouldn't make sense for Prime to take place after that.

The guys at Nintendo actually did the writing & Team Ninja only did the gameplay. Also, Fusion focused more on Samus's conflicts with the X as well as the Feds later. Aside from the Deleter, Samus really didn't have very much direct Samus vs Feds in Other M's story. It was Samus vs creation of Feds who rebeled because the science team has even more vapor for brains than the Space Pirates.
>>
>>49900583

>>
>>49900627
Federation Force already did that.
>>
>>49900583
There's no excuse for Other-M.

That said, I think maybe it's a combination of game style and the main character. If we ignore Other-M:

Samus is neither damsel in distress, nor 'the healer chick'/love-interest, but more importantly, despite not being those, is NOT one of those "I am empowered female, look how need-no-man I am" personality-less lisa-simpson-like characters we keep seeing over and over and over. So, WE like her, but the japs don't like those ellen-ripley types when they're hard professionals that much.

Metroid games are sidescrolling exploration with not that much story or linearity to them. Socially, you can't discuss your favorite characters/waifus/partycomps/etc, at most you probably hate an area or share hidden missile container locations. Sidescrollers also tend not to be cutting edge tech, as the good ones focus instead on tight controls and avoiding things like slowdown.

Think also Korea as a separate example; what THEY like to play tends to be vastly different from anything we consider acceptable in MMORPGs...
>>
>>49900641
>The guys at Nintendo actually did the writing & Team Ninja only did the gameplay.
Doesn't make the writing good. The only good thing to come from it was Ridley's Little Birdie design.

I'm gonna give a goofy one-shot of it a try in a tool-light GURPS, but I can see M&M working pretty well for the setting and ideas.

Fusion was a space station, not a planet. Metroid/Zero Mission also just blew up the pirate installation there, not the whole planet.

I mean, there's still a disturbingly high ratio of "Planets with space pirates on Samus has visited" and "Planets that exploded after Samus visited", but clarity.

Also, prime 2 was technically a planet and the same planet in another dimension.
>>
>>49900672
Obligatory "GURPS"
>>
>>49900641
I'd also like to mention the SA-X. It's more or less Samus vs herself. She finds herself in the same shoes as all those Metroid she killed in SR388. She's not the hunter with all the powers & not using them because she isn't authorized, she legitimately can't use them & worse yet her enemies can. She isn't the hunter, she's the prey in Fusion & it's surprising how many ways the X manage to sabotage her. Turning off the power, attempted boiler explosion, freeze her through the blue X, etc. Despite being the X's number 1 enemy & predator due to her Metroid DNA, she truly isn't the hunter this time.
>>
>>49900609
I like this theory. It makes sense, considering the chozo ascended to a higher plane or something. What they left behind and empowered is basically an elemental force of plot guided by them and stuffed in the body of a hot woman.
>>
>>49900684
>Fusion was a space station, not a planet.
Samus also destroyed SR388. Orbital bombardment.

>Metroid/Zero Mission also just blew up the pirate installation there,
Zebes is completely destroyed in Super Metroid.

Give your ideal Metroid game/setting concept.

Mine would be one focusing on Samus doing a lot of actual bounty hunter work, with a social side in doing investigations at bars, homes, charity events, and so on. I'd try to work in a running-to-endgame subplot with dreams or something as she has to investigate some spiritual threat (that she can gun down messily at the end).

>>49900703
Samus is basically Darth Vader but a good guy and raised by goddamn pigeons. She's monstrously strong but has a crazy kind of moral code and understanding of the big picture.

Nah. The chozo died off. Infertility is a hell of a drug.

The Space Pirates were trying to ascend to a higher plane or something though.
Their obsession with Metroids as mostly to figure out how Space Magic worked.
And also because Mother Brain was designed to assist with making Metroids.

>>
>>49900736
Anon no he's right, the game mentions Chozo ascending in some spiritual manner. Samus is the last living half-Chozo and link to whatever and whoever they are now.
>>
>>49900609
No, I think that takes it too far, you're making her into some kind of offense version of Chirico Cuvie.

Rather, she's a damned jinx in the same way as all those detective manga protagonists. Planning a trip abroad? Someone dies on the plane, someone ELSE gets murdered at the hotel Samus got reservations to, and the horrific experiments pick THAT weekend to go out of control only because while Samus is there is the best time for it to get caught and put back in its cage

Problem is, she's not a detective, she's a power-armored death machine with weapons normally found on heavy vehicles, and her solutions all range from "Itano Circus" to "I waste it with my plasma wave cannon".

So the rogue scientist who'd hidden in the reactor room gets caught... and bathed in rapid-fire streams of fucking plasma.

And the murderous space pirate gets caught and unmasked in the very core of a planet... by a massive barrage of high explosives

And the evil monster gets caught... and power-bombed over and over and over in a room full of delicate equipment.

By the time Samus Aran walks out of ANYWHERE AT ALL, there's been so much collateral damage that entire worlds are breaking up.
>>
>>49900737
I'll repeat what someone else said: Samus is basically a walking exterminatus.

>We have returned to Tallon IV, borne here against our will by a great cataclysm from the reaches of space. A meteor came, casting a dark shadow of debris over the land with the violence of its impact. Though we perceived this from beyond space and time, it was but a curiosity: a brief flare in the universe. But the meteor brought with it corruption. A Great Poison burst forth into the land, clawing at life with such violence that we were ripped from our peaceful state and find ourselves wandering as shadows of the mortal forms we left behind, searching for why we are here.

I love the feeling that Prime 1-3 gave them, of being this legitimate threat of a nation hellbent on insect-like crazed resource acquisition and conquering of space. Their incompetence is scary because their reckless ways STILL produces results they can use, and quickly. It'd also legitimize the stale-bread Fusion plot of the Bad Federation, if you painted it as their own mad push to keep ahead of the threat and preserve a tenuous peace.
>>

I like to think of it as an early draft of Federation propaganda to turn people against Samus. The events still happened, just not the way they were portrayed in the game.

The big difference is that when Samus showed up to the station and was talking with the marines that were already there, one of them mutters something about how anyone could do what she does with her arsenal, so she turns almost everything off to show that it's not the suit, it's her. Instead of Adam authorizing things, he's calling her up and desperately begging her to turn her upgrades back on so she can finish what she's doing faster.

It's kind of Backwards, Metroid is popular in Japan, but Other-M was received better there than Prime.

Puts Nintendo over a barrel though, as either way they'll be pissing a lot of people off with whichever game they release.
>>
>>49906170
>Other-M was received better there than Prime

Why do the Japanese have such shit taste?
>>
>>49906197
Basically Japan still has some very fucked up attitudes regarding gender, and IIRC Other M was conceived as an attempt (basically influenced/done by Team Ninja) to make Samus more "traditionally feminine" according to traditional Japanese standards (i.e. submissive, obedient, quiet, modest, and willing to be dominated and mistreated by men).
>>

>>
>>49905566
To be fair, it may explain why Samus in Fusion's opening and the SA-X don't look like they have the Gravity Suit. No purplish outline against the Omega Metroid though.
>>
>>49906197
Japan hates anything even vaguely resembling a First Person Shooter, seeing them as both ultra-nerdy and ultra-violent.
That most FPSes are PC games doesn't help, since Japan has a phobia of computers.
>>
>>49906421
It's supposed to be more in line with her manga portrayal. She's still an emotional wreck who somewhat recovers.
>>
>>49906519
Other M was clearly inspired by the manga, but it contradicts the manga constantly. And both Fusion and Zero Mission already tie into the manga directly.
>>
>>49906519
But she literally pointed her blaster at Malkovich's face in the manga because she thought he might raise objections about her going to Zebes. She was clearly not putting up with his shit.
>>
>>49900740
Oh it's absolutely overrated purely to spite Nintendo. It's still neat.
>>
>>49906539
The problem is, some of the contradictions aren't really contradictions & I've seen times where Prime & elsewhere had some contradictions too. Fusion's Omega Metroid is absolutely nothing alike the Metroid 2 ones. No Super Missiles & just Ice Beam? I wonder what it must have been like making that Metroid 2 fangame & having these two different portrayals in mind.
>>
>>49906421
Don't blame Team Ninja for that game, they were basically the code monkeys; the blame all goes to the director Sakamoto.

And Adam didn't raise any objections, because he trusted Samus despite having just met her. Yet in Other M he doesn't trust her at all.
>>
>>49906582
So? Even in the other m flashbacks she bickered with him & eventually left. It's blatantly obvious that Samus is older, has an overly affectionate view of Adam which even the Fusion computer called her out on, and is more willing to cooperate given how they have similar goals & Zebes is too destroyed, not to mention a shell of its former self prior, to care about.
>>
>>49906635
As someone who isn't a fan of Other M, there's such things as people's opinions changing. Samus did leave him right after he sacrificed his brother to become a bounty hunter.
>>
>arguing about Metroid lore
Anything that is said in a cutscene (as opposed to text logs or showing it without any dialogue) is almost always mind-bogglingly stupid.

Metroid lore was always about "show, don't tell" and piecing information together from vague clues and text logs.

Other M fucked that up royally. Fusion is also kinda guilty of that.

Its for the same reason Cowboy Bebop was more popular in America then in Japan. They were made by people who were really into western films and style and as a result ended up alienating their own domestic audience.

After-all western developers have had a pretty good track record in making Metroid games both official and unofficial while in house Japanese developers just don't seem to "get it" in the last decade after losing the westaboos from the development staff.

Near the end of the game ADAM mentions that there are approximately 11 SA-X on board the station. Fucking 11. Try to imagine a universe where there are 11 evil Samus Arans running around, capable of reproducing asexually. You probably can't, because at that point there is no universe.

There's also a scene during the Restricted Lab where an SA-X gets overwhelmed by Metroids before the sector gets ejected and self-destructs; so you do see at least one SA-X die before you actually fight another. Given that Samus personally saw two of them, I think it's unlikely ADAM lied about anything related to the SA-X of their numbers.

Part of the reason the X are so pants shittingly terrifying is that they CAN replicate Samus' suit. There's another boss that's basically an X that downloaded the Varia suit data before you could get to it, and they also do things like take over the security robot, mimic Chozo Statues, and every single beam weapon Samus gets in Fusion. Even the plasma beam was assimilated by them, so they're pretty high on the galactic apocalypse scale.

See, this is why today's webcomics are horrible.

The unedited version fucks up royally - IT EXPLAINS THE FUCKING PUNCHLINE.

A lot of people bitch about excessive text in comics, but this is a prime example of excessive VISUALS in comics.

The same joke is delivered better through three panels as opposed to five. It's more concise and more funny.

I feel like we need a hero we don't deserve. Some sort of Thog that would deal not only with text, but also with visuals.

The "bounty hunter" part of Samus was only put by the japanese who thought it sounded cool. When they found out WHAT a bounty hunter was, they were horrified. Prime 1 was supposed to have bounty hunting side missions, which is how they found out.

Put simply: She's a mercenary, and they used cool words that they didn't understand.
>>
>>49905099
Japan hears "Mercenary" and thinks "honorable ronin who swore loyalty to no lord"
>>
>>49917201
>ronin
>honorable
>>
>>49917113
Not even mercenary. Going by the other hunters we see "Bounty Hunter" is just Feddie speak for space hero.
>>
>>49917235
Except by the series' own admission all the "space heroes" are getting paid for their services.
>>
>>49917228
Japan sees "Ronin" the same way americans see Clint Eastwood type cowboys or Europe would see wandering knight errants

A little rough around the edges, but they do what's "right" in the end because personal pride/honor is more important than money.
>>
>>49917306
Then they have it completely backwards. The whole point of a mercenary action is that it's done because of money, not because ideals or principles.
>>
>>49900725
Starts with you trapped inside a massive structure without an explanation other than the walls having been cracked open and the area being heavily damaged. The space pirates hijacked a chozo construction system and caused it to go out of control massively overbuilding the structure. Going down the structure is more like chozo construction until it intermixes with actual chozo ruins. Going up eventually leads to the space pirate base which is itself constantly moving further out as the structure grows.

As you go on though the game though you have all sorts of problems, clearly having been infected with something, and finding clues as to what it is. Until just a little bit into the game you fight a space pirate general when you have a massive fit in the middle of the fight and get crushed. Next thing is a cutscene of Samus landing on the platform you were fighting the general on and finding your remains. Turns out you were a clone that was created by the space pirates and now you will playing as the actual Samus(who pulls something out of the first suit of armor and seems to live through everything that happened until then) where you have to track down the other clones for their equipment, and to try and stop the space pirates from cloning you.

Remember the SA-X going berserk on the baby metroids earlier in the game?

I just have a giggle thinking that for all the stoic horror the moment anything metroid appears the SA-X drops everything to go "FUCKING METROIDS GET OFF MY UNIVERSE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

Nigga, you best be joking.

Western audiences like open-ended games much more than Japanese audiences. Thus, one of the biggest draws to the series in the west is something many Japanese players are indifferent or even hostile to. Other M, the one Metroid game received better in Japan than in the rest of the world, is ultra-linear. This is one of the many aspects of Other M that royally pissed off western fans of the series.
