reposting for thoughts on my neophytes so far (fell asleep after posting and lost the thread :( )

Anything I should/can add to the bases? Aiming for a moon-type base

I think you should ask WiP. They look good to me.
In 40k Generals half the posters don't even own an army and only a quarter of those that do paint them.
>>
>>49887579
Compared to my marine sprue, they look good.

10/10 would proxi a whole army to play against
>>
Is a Tau list with no more than one of a given unit type (except fire warriors) and no Riptides or larger a non-cheese list?
>>
>>49887691
if you are tau and you beat the other player, its pretty likely they will say its a cheese list

just dont take riptides under 1500 points and steer clear of the OSC formation and people will only have an 80% chance of complaining, instead of a 100% chance
>>
Which specialists would you recommend for a full crisis team in Killteam?
>>
>>49887631
bu-bu-but I own 4 armies (technically 5) and about half of each army is painted in 4 colours. Not painted very well mind you because my hands shake like a motherfucker but they have 4 colours.
>>
>>49887579

Take it easy on their eyes, you really only need the slightest bit of paint on the point of your smallest brush.

I'm also of the opinion that you ought to have mixed in some sort of more alien hue into their skin tone, but I say that without knowing how your purestrains look. If they've got well tanned, orange heads as well then I suppose it's all good.

But my opponents can happily take Carnifexes (T6 MCs) and Terminators (2+ saves) at sub 1500.

One Riptide is not OP. Kill the markerlights (oh so scary T3 5+ 1W infantry) and it's a BS3 Battle Cannon that can take a single BS3 shot at deep strikers that will miss most of the time. If you can't deal with that you need to git gud.

never said it was, you asked what isnt considered cheese, pretty much everyone that doesnt understand the tau codex automatically says what you are bringing is cheese if you remotely do well

I dont even take riptides or markerlights anymore even at 1850, last match i brought 3 ghostkeels just in a cad and i was fighting a necron decurion, the ghostkeels mowed down some tomb blades and then were obliterated by tesla and being charged by an overlord when i had a bad thrust move roll

I won the game 8 points to 7 and he blamed it on the overpowered undercosted ghostkeels (which costs 510 points and killed less than 150 points of tombblades)

you literally cant win

Halp plox, I give happy ending. Can someone crunch some numbers on these death star ideas? Both aim to re-roll failed saves. One is Ahriman with a sorceror and 8 thousnad sons, the other is two sorcerors with 8 nurgle bikes. So the question is who would fair better in CC with MEQs and TEQs? The thousand sons have less attacks but always get the 4++ while the bikes will probably lose their armour saves on occasion but have t6 and more attacks with a pistol and CCW. I know there are too many factors for a reliable answer but any pointers would be much appreciated, thanks in advance guys.

It's Kill Team, you dunce. Which means you get 200 points. And because every model is an individual, the Crisis suits can hop around the board between areas of cover, happily picking off anything which can instant-kill them while the rest of the enemy squad plinks away with small arms potshots.

Played Skitarii against team like that. Didnt last long.

My team was:
10x Securitarii Hypathists
5x Vanguard - 1x Arc Rifle

If I saw them, i pelted them with shrapnel and if I didnt I lobbed blinding grenades. Since the suits were I2 they were blind almost every turn before I wiped them out.

>>

That's cute, but Blind weapons aren't exactly common. And Grenades have an 8" range. Crisis Suits have no reason to ever get that close, so I'm pretty sure the guy you were playing against wasn't actually very good at the game.
>>
>>49888006
Not retarded, I just play the game unlike you

TERMINATORS are 2+/5+ and die if you force saves. A Riptide is only 3++ if it passes a roll that has a chance to wound it and doesn't use another buff. Big fucking whoop. I guess that makes storm shields THE MOSTEST BROKEN.

"IT CAN MOVE OUT OF RANGE" - try actually moving, try using long range guns.

How fucking bad at this game are you?

>>49888136

>>
>>49888062
>A Riptide is only 3++ if it passes a roll that has a chance to wound it and doesn't use another buff.

And if it doesn't, it's still T6 with a 2+/5+ save.

The only justification you have is that "Terminators have a 2+/5+" when they're only T4 and "Carnifexes are T6" when anything worth shooting at them punches right through their armour save.

Riptides have both high toughness and excellent saves.
>>
>>49888077
>>5++ or 3++ at will

this is one thing that most non-tau players parrot alot, outside of paying extra points tax plus 30 points for the earth caste array on one suit, or taking the unanimously agreed broken formation that is hte riptide wing, riptides cannot just get 3++ at will

the iontide 3++ is doable because of 2 things:
1: you dont need the nova charge for the ion, its powerful enough with just the normal large blast
2: the riptide wing allows rerollable nova reactors

riptides are made way more broken than just being overcosted because of the riptide wing, because of the riptide wing people just autoamtically assumes that non-formation riptides are the same, when in reality its not the case
>>
>>49888169
I think I may have worded what I was saying incorrectly, I am agreeing with you that Riptides are too durable for their points.
>>49888176
I play Tau though.
>>
>>49888062
Bait but...
T6 vs T4 is pretty huge.
Also Riptide is a 2+/5++(3++)/ 5+++, because let's be honest you're buying Stim Packs.
Each time you Nova Charge you have a 22% of taking a Wound. That's not too bad to up to a 3++ if you're in danger of AP2.

But (imo) the biggest issue with Riptide is it's "unfun" to fight because it's so hard to kill.
Not that it has OP firepower, but because you literally have to ignore it. (Statistical you need to do 45 Wounds to kill it through its 2+/FNP)

>Noticed this the most after running an Impossible Robe Daemon Prince / Lord of Change who got a 2++ rerollable. Opponents weren't having fun. Which is the entire point of the game.

Tldr:
>Having an unkillable slasher villian tier monster on the board which will slowly kill everything and your opponent can't stop it is never fun.
>>
>>49888206
>I play Tau though.

so you have no excuse for knowing formation riptides are on an entirely different level of bullshit when you compare them to standard riptides
>>
>>49887978
And the carnifex has to get into melee or in Devourer range, and needs synapse from warriors or a Hive tyrant in range whereas a Riptide can jump and shoot at double the range,

Gee I wonder which one is going to last longer
>>
>>49888222
And standard Riptides are still a massive pain in the ass if you're playing one of the lower-tier armies. Ork, Tyranid, and DE players have nothing even comparable to a Riptide.
>>
>>49888221
>Not that it has OP firepower

which is where the riptide wing comes in

rerollable nova charges plus one turn all riptides can do their shooting phase twice as long as they didnt move in the movement phase

couple that with fusionblasters and ripplefire? each riptide fires thier main weapon twice and thier twinlinked fusion blasters 4 times
>>
>>49888252
Riptidewing is OP, no doubt.

But we're discussing just non Riptidewing, Riptides.
>>
>>49888248
>and DE players

I'm also a DE players and you can literally ignore the riptides while its got its shield up, it cant do enough damage to your army for you to care, just go and mulch markerlights and it becomes a non issue

the moment it fails its nova charge and I dont have much else to kill? oh look i have 10+ blasters at BS4, hit on 3+ wound on 2+ and he only has 5++ and FNP
>>
>>49888222
I never compared them to Riptide Formation? Also, nice trips.
>>
>>49888297
i didnt even notice i got double trips, go me

my point is that your inital post claimed that riptides can get 3++ at will, which is only really "at will" for riptide wings, normal riptides cant bank on getting that 3++
>>
>>49888296
>oh look i have 10+ blasters at BS4

Friendly reminder that as per the FAQ, these are all going to be snap-firing if their transport jinked.

And if it didn't jink it's dead.

>I just play the game unlike you
Sure you do, Mr. Baitman
>>
>>49888277
This may sound like bait but I don't feel like riptide wing is that much more broken than just taking 3 riptides. Nova really isn't that unreliable and their value stems from their mobility as much as their fire power. If you're aware you're playing against riptide wing and bringing an appropriately busted list as well, it doesn't do that much to shore up (what few) weaknesses the riptide has
>>
>>49888318
>playing DE
>staying in an open topped transport

fucking hell no wonder people people got assmad at the FAQ, i disembarked on turn 2 pretty much every match even before the FAQ hit

yeah people are going to die, but DE can run MSU lists so hard that you have more units than you have shots

that being said, the meta at my LGS was very flamer and blast heavy, so there was never any point in my staying in my venoms

>>49888348
that makes much more sense, fair enough
>>
>>49887522
>I mean what would it even be, allow tactical squads to upgrade their seargents to ML1 psyker

Would this even be that unbalanced? I mean, the Death Watch can pretty much already do that, right?
>>
>>49888352
it does sound like bait, ignoring the rerollable nova charges which, while you think its not needed, its still preferable, you still have the double shooting turn and the +1 BS for the other 2 units if they shoot at the first units target

its just all this extra shit for zero tax
>>
>>49888352
Rerollable Nova Reactor
>going from 22% to fail (you bought FNP) to 7%
>firing twice

Riptides traditional weakness is its "unreliable" Nova Charge and it's (relative) low firepower.

Riptidewing addresses both those weaknesses
>>
>>49888221
One house rule that I like to offer is making the Robe a 3++ that can never be altered or rerolled and losing the PD test or die bit.

I like the guaranteed durability aspect, but the rerollable 2++ triggers people.
>>

>>
>>49888450
>>49888457

To me it seems like most lists even capable of playing meaningfully against a riptide wing aren't really devastated by those additions. Yes having a rerollable nova charge matters quite a bit, but any list that can deal with a riptide wing is probably assuming you have a 3++ all the time anyway. Conversely, a list that isn't really prepared to deal with 3 riptides probably wouldn't come near enough to killing even one of them that a few wounds from failed charges wouldn't matter for dick. Obviously it's one of the most braindead and effective formations to use bar none, but I'm just saying it really doesn't shore them up entirely against D weapons/Invisibility/ID weaponry/various combat monsters/characters or units designed to get easy sweeps
>>
>>49888472
>8 thousnad sons

jesus how many points is this army?

:^)
>>
>>49888472
None of those units can be counted as "deathstars" and there really no way for them to be truely effective during game when you count in how much they cost.
>>
>>49888372
It wouldn't really be broken, and it might be what I settle on. It just feels kinda boring, and I think formations and detachments are a better design space to represent their Psyker boner.
>>
>>49888465
Wouldn't be bad. Actually I like that.

It sucks because it's a GOOD artifact, but with the Ld or Remove it kinda forces a cheese mentality of ensuring it gets 2++ or 4+ FNP because your only Ld 9 (my bud plays Tyranids so he's Ld6 eating 24 S6 shots a turn.)

Kinda wish daemon artifacts weren't limited per models would love a paradox prince

Peltats are pretty funny unit.. in a way that it needs some rebalancing. Currently if y ou compare that flechette vs kinetic round, flechette is ALWAYS better against any target it can hit and hurt. Even against optimal target of kinetic round that has every advantage on it (T5 sv3+), flechette is better. Only times flechetter is worse when a) you cant hurt your target (t7+) b) your range cant hit your target.

On average unit of Bs7 Hoplites will do 6,5 wounds on normal marines with flechette. Kinetic rounds would do 44.444
>>
hello there fellow valian/tg/uardsmen! ive taken your advice, done some play testing, crafted a straight nasty guard list I plan on taking to a tourney soon, was hoping to help get some final tweaks on it.

I've got it narrowed down to basically a few variations of the same list, just messing with psychic dice, how many tanks pask should roll with, bodies on the field ect... so here goes

HQs/non force org guys
>engineseer+3X servitors
>ML2 primaries psyker
>Pask in a punisher, melta lascannon, flanked by one executioner with a lascannon
troops
>Infantry plat, one squad in a chimera the other with an auto cannon, otherwise naked
>vets in a chimera, with an autocannon
heavy support
>x3 Wyverns
>manticore
>manticore
=][= allies
> coteaz "Fuck your drop pods" torqumada
>Ordo xenos inquisitor, 3X servo skulls
>warband, psyker,2X bolter acolites
>warband, 2X monkeys, psyker, 3X bolter acolytes, 3X plasma acolytes, 3X multimelta servitors
fortification
>aegis defense line

the strategy is pretty straight forward, i just kinda turtle up behind the ADL to get 3+ cover for anyone that has camo netting (everyone) and thats not planning on night fighting for a 2+ turn one, coteaz and his doom squad deter drop pods some, roll for invisibility with my two ML2 psykers and grab prescience with my two baby psykers, put some servo skulls out. guardsmen meat shield and grab objective, manticores rape vehicles, wyverns rape infantry, pask rapes everything. then i just try and table the enemy turn 2-3 then move out and grab as many points as i can. anything I'm missing?

Newer player here, still trying to decide which Chapter Tactics I want to build my army towards.
Trying to decide between Imperial Fists and Iron Hands.
I am looking into getting some Cemturians and a Stern or Command Squad both with Drop Pods.
Most people seem to play 1500pts and there is a decent group at the game store I found that play on Saturdays with like nine plays, some of which have multiple armies.
My list has had luck against Imperial Guard, CSM and Grey Knights but I've lost the other half of my games against Skitarii (which was a close game), Tau and Dark Angels.

So, out of curiosity, which one's typically a better Detachment: the Adeptus Mechanicus War Convocation, or the Cohort Mechanicus? They're both big, bulky Detachments that eat up most of your points even before you get into upgrades and buying the maximum model count, but the unit lists the require are fairly different, and so are the benefits for having them.

I mean, on the one hand, the War Convocation gives you free weapon and armor upgrades for your entire army, and you get to take Knights as a part of the Detachment. On the other hand, with the Cohort Mechanicus, you get to apply both of your buffs to your entire army rather than just part of it, and you get some extra buffs on top of it to sweeten the deal and make it that much more synergetic.

Also, would it be worth it to spend about 300 points buying the Valkyrie Detachment from the Imperial Guard codex to get a trio of planes to ferry your guys around and provide air support, due to the lack of transports in the AdMech codices, or would you generally be better off spending the points buying more dudes and/or gear to fill your list out?
>>
>>49889235
Whoops the tact squads are 9 and 10 marines strong, I forgot to count the Sergeants.
>>
>>49889200
Yeah. Check the rules. The "normal" S9 ap2 rockets have bigger blast than your normal large 5" blast.

Also check wording on firing manticore missiles and Power of the Machine Spirit. By RAW PotMS allows you to fire 2 missiles per turn.
>>
>>49889002
Studs were on there during the Heresy because the suit (just like MkV) was made of inferior materials and needed reinforcement. Later, when better materials were more readily available, the studs were not necessary, though some still keep using them out of purely cosmetic reasons as to honour the suit's history.
>>
>>49889293
I honestly prefer the rules of the Cohort Mechanicus, but it's so cumbersome in terms of points you need to be playing a 2500 pt game before you can even use it without MSU spam and a really boring army.
Personally I use Inquisition Chimeras as transports, as theyre far cheaper, take up less points and can allow an entire Kataphron and/or MSU Skitarii squad to fire from it.
>>
>>49889332
i haven't brought it up with my group because it would be a hard argument, because POTMS says it can fire one more weapon at full BS than allowed, but the rockets say you can only fire one at a time, so lots of people would say they cancel each other out, or the codex trumps the BRB, if i could win that fight though it would give me a massive advantage since running out of ammo doesnt matter seeing as manticore need to do their work by turn 2-3 or they will get blown up or just miss the chance to be worth the points
>>
>>49887691
people just like to complain about Tau. even if they weren't a strong army, your opponents would still find something to bitch about.

they love to hate them
>>
>>49882560
Models within 3" vertically are considered b2b, so red can eat infinite dicks, & everyone blue who can pack in within 2" horizontally of the front row can also attack, because all models within 2" of the front line can also fight.

Red BTFO for being a shitter.
>>
>>49889261
Agreed. Personally I'd also want move away from +stat (similar to removing the +stat biomorphs from Tyranids),.
>>
>>49889379
honestly when i started on /tg/ i figured there'd be a lot of Eldar hate, and theres some of that. But god damn people here love to shit on tau.

don't get me wrong they're good, but i feel like you have to build to a handful of specific lists to be competitive, and tourney wise they are outclassed by SM and eldar still, especially after that FAQ decheesed them
>>
>>49889293
War Convocation gives you more flexibility than Cohort. (and costs less points).
>>
>>49889371
I like you. You seems to have good grasp of rules, how to build effective IG lists and good sportmanship.

So, I come to yall needing some help on what to get next for my Necron army; Here's what I've currently got:
40 Necron Warriors
10 Scarab Swarms
5 Immortals/w Gauss
5 Lych Guard
3 Destroyers
1 Doomsday Ark
1 Triarch Stalker
1 Annihilation Barge
4 Lords
1 Over Lord
1 Cryptek

I know that the most obvious choice is a unit of Tomb Blades, because they would let me set up the Decurion formation. But at the same time, by starting a decurion, it'll become harder to play the rest of my army, IE, the Destroyers and Scarabs. In that case, a flyer might be better off, since I need a transport for either my warriors or Lych guard. So, thoughts?

Those sorcerers make all the difference, and thereby totally incalculable. If Nurgle boys roll up smash and an int boost, they're gonna wreck house. Similarly, if the 1k sons get Reroll armor saves and get smash, you've got one hell of a murderfuck deathstar. It all depends on the powers.

Ideally? Probably the 1k sons, the durability would just be too fun. But the warp is nothing if not random, so take that into account.

Eh, would a Monolith really do all that well in a list like this? I am already pretty darn slow, and I already have a Doomsday ark for heavy fire support. Having a monolith seems a little redundant, saddly; Although, I do want to get one some time in the future, just for iconic-ness sakes.
>>
>>49889954
Stop getting trolled.

A pair of Ghost Arks would make your warriors more mobile and durable.

You could go for an orikan star with more Sword and Shield Lychguard with Obyron and Orikan.

Get another box of destroyers and put a Lord on one with a warscythe and you can roll him with five destroyers and do some good damage.

Obviously Wraiths can do very well for themselves.

Two Doom Scythes at higher points can form an auxiliary for your decurion or you can use them as Night Scythe Transports for a full squad of Immortals or even the lychguard.
>>
>>49890221
Of course you can use them, the list forces you to take the Oathsworn Detachment, which is one LoW from the IK codex, the Forgeworld Knights are treated as if they were in the IK codex. Otherwise you could never take them except in 30k games.

Libbies are also fucking awesome, rolling 4 powers on daemonology is always fun, but to my knowledge there is no official kit for a GK libby, the codex uses a silver version of the vanilla one, so get kit bashing! GK kits come with tons of cool extra bits so it should be pretty easy

So the consensus is I should a terminator libby and deck him out in gk bits? That sounds perfect because that paladin squad had at least three additional helmets for the fuck of it, and it helps that the librarian term is strangely cheaper than regular librarian.

Also I found a website that sells dreadknights for ~28usd which knocks general retail out of the park so I might throw caution to the wind and blow like 80usd for two of those and that libby.

I'm about to start a Deathwatch army, and I have a few list-making questions.
1. Should I use Blackshields, and how should I kit them and their unit of Veterans out?
2. When making kill teams, should I still be kitting them with specific purposes or should I make all rounder kill teams?
3. Are Corvus Blackstars worth it? I think they're cooler than drop pod spamming tactics, but if there are better options I might have to reconsider them.

Honestly I'd think that they're using the original molds anyways (I know nothing about casting so I'm presuming that you can't use the same materials in molds made for different shit) so if I were to theorize on what happened for this I'd think it went something like this.

>Well gee we have a bit of spare pewter lying around that we aren't going to do fuck all with
>how about we just ask if people want any old pewter casts
>fuck it we've got enough for twenty or so of each model we can try it

I recall there being exactly one plastic thing on the list, the tank crewmen, so that'd be the only outlier.

>>
>>49892988
Metal molds can be used with Resin, but not with plastic.
>>
>>49893039
Please read it again, with a thought.

Upper one means: In IK detachment (either the bigger or the smaller) you can have Cerastus Knights only if you have more other knights than them. So having only 1 cerastus in your war convocation is no-no. Found out this the hard way.

Second one: this is a bit retarded but Cerastus knights are IK faction. In most detachment there is a restriction that detachment can only contain units of single faction. So by RAW you couldnt include Cerastuses in those detachment. But in this case RAW can go fuck itself since RAI is so damn clear.
>>
>>49893152
Isn't it hard(ish) rubber or something? While resin is more like silicone?

I think Hasslefree has some minis only in resin and they say they couldn't make them in metal without changing the mini. So there's some differences between the two.

Do you plan going into melee with them ? If not then no, if yes then you need to decide if he's going to take the challenges or will the sergeant take them as those might require different load outs.
>2. When making kill teams, should I still be kitting them with specific purposes or should I make all rounder kill teams?
The former. I would say never go for all rounders but Deathwatch Vets are already rather versatile in shooting, so don't try to make them also good at fighting as well unless you know you will play against someone that will charge you. At most take a sergeant or a Black Shield with a power axe or something as a contingency.

Not too experienced with Orks, but maybe blob a couple of the Warbiker squads together, give the Tankbustaz a trunk, give the Warehouse da lucky still and give as many boyz squads as possible a Boss Nob with Power klaw, dropping a regular boy for him. To get points for this lot, maybe drop one to the 20-boy slugga-choppa blobs and maybe a second one, and one of the 5-man biker squads. Use any spare points to get a biker painboy for your 10 man bike squad, drop the mega armor on the 'Boss and give him a bike, amd ride around rerolling jink saves in your FnP biker squad. Drop the Meganobz and buy more power klaw nobs and maybe a few more trukks.

People are forgetting something else. If you have 5 Terminators and you cost one wound, the Terminators just lost 20% of their firepower. If you fight a riptide and cost one wound, they lose 0% of their firepower.

This means Riptides ignore a fundemental aspect of Lanchester's Square Law. Making them much, much stronger than terminators even IF terminators were T6.

A second wound is better than FNP or 5++ which you can probably give them one way or another through allies.

I4 is just fine if you have a 2+ and a weapon that has AP2 at initiative because most enemies will have to hit you at I1 to get through your armor save and rely on theirs to survive until then. Their guns are Assault 2, not Rapid Fire.

So, how are you supposed to take a Detachment of Inquisition models? The codex doesn't have any troops choices, so you can't take the Detachments from the corebook, and the Inquisition book doesn't list any new Detachments to make up for this.

It just sucks that the ordo malleus specifically only hunts daemons (one army out of like 20) xenos hunts aliens and that's like 6 codexes, and hereticus fight ALL traitors so that a few codexes there, and they can fight daemons too because it makes sense.
