I agree though, that its strange to make standard fantasy races into other strange cultures - they are defined by european myth to begin with. If you want an Indian setting, use their own mythology ffs.

Why would you? Look at India, Russia, Muslimlands - they're shitholes. Japan is fine, since it's a memeland where monks are from, but aside from Europe and vague weeabooland, why would you have anything else?
>>
>>49870305
European countires were just as shitty. We're not emulating reality here, we're taking it and making it fantastical.

I love the aesthetics of India, but im not going to play out shitting in the streets.

For those who aren't aware

>Nagas = Half snake people who live in underground palaces and own much treasure. They're heavily associated with water as well. Their arch-enemies are the Garuda.

>Garuda - half bird people named after the eagle god and mount of lord Vishnu. Arch-enemies of the Nagas. They reside on mountains and build their cities there.

>Yaksha - Guardians of earth's bounty. Be it treasures of gold underground or the forests themselves. They love wandering the wilderness. Yaksha are males, being usually portrayed as fierce warriors or short and stout-somewhat like dwarves. The females of their race are Yakshini: beautiful maidens with very large breasts and wide hips.

>Vanaras - Monkey people who make their kingdoms in the forests. Excellent fighters and skilled bushmen.

>Gandharvas - handsome messengers of the gods and expert musicians. Their beautiful wives are nature spirits and divine maidens called Apsaras. Lord Indra likes sending them to tease & seduce men who might get too powerful from meditation and spiritual development.

>Kimpurusha - lion headed mountain people

>Kinnaras - half men half horses (in Buddhist lore half bird). A very innocent and warm hearted folk, they're very fond of music and mate for life. They wear nothing but flowers, and eat nothing but flower pollen. Their scent is fragrant and very pleasant. Absolutely harmless, they're known to care for lost or abandoned human children. Think Hobbits somewhat.

>>49870305
For the time. :^)
Then the cycle will restart and Europe will go back to being shit, and the centers of power will shift again and again yadda yadda rinse and repeat.
Do keep in mind that Europe was THE shithole prior to ~1600thC, 1700thC maybe, if you push it.

Other cultures- especially India and Russia- have folklores just as deep as European ones. There is no point in dismissing the material, which is hundreds and thousands of years old, simply because of events which have transpired in the past century due to a corrupt leadership in those countries, or to base judgement on /int/ and /pol/ maymays.

If I were to do that, then every story would be about Hans, the Europoor cuckold, on a quest to get a state-approved birth-control pill so that Achmed can cum inside his """significant other""" and not have to worry, but face the issue of trying to dodge the police whenever he uses the words "Brown, Black, Skin, Heil, Government, Refugee(s)," and so forth within half an hour of eachother.
>>
>>49870782
People who try to force Norse mythology on a supposedly non-European setting are like those people who go to an exotic restaurant and demand macaroni n' cheese

Or that guy on vacation who wants to stay in the hotel and watch TV

>What fantasy race makes for a good Not!India?

Minotaurs.

I've been using Minotaurs for:

Not!India
>A strict religious caste-based society of Minotaurs; where in the holiest cows the "Brahmin" rule at top. Their fascination with mazes has developed into intricate temples and cities.

Not!Korea
>Peaceful, eastern, society of Minotaurs with an affinity for terraces; they're a small nation, but they're well known for their kimchi and advanced rice farming techniques.

Not!Egypt
>A Dynasty of unchallenged, authoritarian, Minotaur rulers; their massive cities and even more massive pyramids belay the intricate labrynths they've built inside them.

Not!China
>The 2nd most powerful Minotaur society; their society is completely obsessed with direction and have some of the best sailors and worst pirates. Their greatest achievement is breeding pugs; small lap dogs with "mazes for faces".

So far everyone I've mentioned or exposed it to has absolutely loved it, so I'm going to keep doing it.

Rakshasa.
Somewhat ironically they would pretty much have the stats and description of a playable Orc or Half-Orc race as those are seen and depicted today, so it would look like you're being lazier and less accurate as if you're doing the thing you're explicitly trying to avoid.
>>
>>49879637
How?

Rakshasa are ugly man eating demons capable of shapeshifting, flight, and illusions

Not all of em are bad but most are

Orcs are just uglier barbarians based on a vague Anglo-Saxon word for monster
>>
>>49879787
I always thought "orc" had something to do with the word "ogre".
>>
>>49879881
It does

Both the French ogre and Anglo-Saxon orc come from Orcus, a Roman underworld god
>>
>>49879787
That just sounds like an Oni.

The Romans had a shitton of gods, mostly because it made for good foreign policy - you conquer a territory, you let the local people continue their worship and slowly introduce your own deities over time. This meant that a lot of cults would eventually form in a polythestic society, even after the religions they were from faded - Epona, Mithras, all that jazz.

And the Romans just liked having a lot of gods for some reason. There were several different gods just for various forms of luck.

Pic not related, I just think it's cool in its own way.
