I always liked salamanders. they're the only space marines who prides themselves on their creations rather than the destruction they bring, they're also the only ones who understand that the "he who fight with monster" effect can be prevented by being closer to humanity

Pretty much every chapter has some form of recreational act that involves creating things. Space Wolves have the Sagas, Ultramarines and Blood Angels have poetry, arts, cultural debates, Imperial Fists build monuments and scrimshaw, even Iron Fists build, tinker, and improve their equipment as well as their own bodies, even if they refuse to feel any joy or pride in doing so.

I've never read the HH novels but I'm confused. 1d4chan says Pert wanted to be noblebright until the fact that he realized everyone in power was a tyrant and sperged out.

The lore changes constantly cause there's a baker's dozen HH books released every month and things get retconned and re-retconned all the time. It's part of why the Russ/Magnus debacle is such a skubfest.

I think it's a blend of both. Pert was always a sperg with a dim view of people. He was just at one time married to the idea things could get better.

The Space Wolf motifs work a lot better when it's just the important guys wearing all the wolf shit. Your standard Tactical Marine doesn't need to be decked out with a wolf pelt and wolf braids and wolf heads scratched into every inch of his armor.

I think everything needs a drop of it, and then on your characters you give them a splash of AESTHETIC.

A rune on your standard Space Wolf tac marine's bolter and helmet, or a flame pattern on the pauldron of an otherwise unadorned Salamander in standard MkVII Armour is the perfect amount of flavour for your line dudes, IMHO.

They clearly were not ALWAYS wolf-obsessed. I think the Wolf was just the personal motif of Russ, and the Great Wolves after him. But Fenrisians have names lime Bjorn, which means bear, and one of the Wolf Lords is named "Krakendoom" which, besides sounding badass, would be awesome from Iron Islands-esque motifs.

I'd figured the wolf stuff was at the very least a uniform, and individual Space Wolves were free to decorate their armor in any way they see fit as long as it doesn't occlude the legion colors and heraldry.
