The Trade-Tongue, Merchant's Tongue, or just fucking use Common because it's a good term that isn't a specific name for a language like "English" or "Latin", which is what it would actually have and your desire to be a contrarian fuck doesn't make you original. Being original would be inventing a word from a fictional language that is the title for that language, probably derived from that language's place-name for its people of origin. Christ.

The reason, that in the early 21st century, that a non-trivial number of people across the world have SOME idea of a handful of English words is due to the economic, political, and cultural power of The United States of America has exerted over the past few decades as the world's superpower. As well as the ease of communication with such things as the Internet, and whatnot. If, in whatever region you intend to set your game, there is a large regional power, such as a country of some sort, then it's likely that most of the people in said area will know at least a few words or phrases in that tongue. Thus, name "common" the language of the hypothetical kingdom.

There's no such thing as a universal "common" in Feudal times all across the world, everywhere.
>>
>>49861947
Right now? No.
Back in 70s? A bunch of people knew esperanto.
True, not comparable to a proper language, but for a purely artificial constructed language esperanto was quite successful.
>>
>>49860958
Is it a natural language or an artificial one?

If its a natural language, name it after the people who spoke it first like every other language in the history of the world.

If its an artificial one, name it after some sort of characteristic of the language (IE; lojban) or get a bit metaphorical with it with and give it some sort of internal meaning (IE; Esperanto means "One who hopes", which has a metaphorical meaning relating to why it was made).

Lingua Franca?

You know, the entire concept of "Common" is stupid. Everyone has their own racial languages except humans, who exclusively speak this one language that everyone happens to speak.

In my setting there is no "common". The elves are the dominant cultural force, so everyone learns Elven as a second language (a bit like how in the ancient world Koinè was the patrician's second language of choice, in the Early Modern era everyone worth speaking too learned French and how today you need to know English to function on the international market). The human language is called after the largest human kingdom: Occitania. "Humanspeak" is therefore Occitan.

I realize I might be acting like a special snowflake here, but this idea of "Common" always rubbed me the wrong way.

How many lingua francas do you know that are called 'common'? That's right. Zero.

Even if it was a language typically only used for trade, based originally on some previous lingua franca with highly simplistic grammar and many loans people would still not call it common. People wouldn't even call it 'the lingua franca'. They would have a name for it based on what the original language was called, such as 'simple [name]' or 'merchant [name]'. But, languages being as they are, people to ably stopped caring about the etymology pretty quickly and the name mutated along with the rest of the language so that you could only reason your way to its original meaning and how it must have been called originally by thinking about it for a while.

The best reasoning to use for this is irl trade practices, of which there could be various interpretations:

A) The most "common" language:
Make the language of the most trade-focused race the most common language among merchants and craftsmen; regularly picked up by their families and associates, making it the common tongue, so maybe most people speak Dwarven or Human, but not everyone, though not everyone. So if you went to an Elf-Town in a world where [Human] is the common trade-language, then 100% of them would speak [Elf] and 40-60% of them would speak [Human], and maybe another 10-30% very broken [Human].
This happened a lot in many places irl.

B) A self-perpetuating trade-tongue.
Similar to situation A, but it's actually an amalgamation of common phrases and idioms from all of the more common languages, as opposed to a broadly spread language. Lots of simple phrases and common terms from the more common human, elf, and dwarf languages. Nobody's really "fluent" in trade-tongue, but through it you get the gist of what everyone's saying.
This also happened sometimes irl, commonly refereed to as pigeon languages. "The people of the high mountains have a saying..." etc. Call it pigeon, trade, or common, but impose minuscule penalties when trying to convey something super specific.

C) A country took over a huge chunk of the known-world, to the point where they command a majority of international trade.
See A) for more details.

Not necessarily true. Good merchants are more likely to pick up the language of an important partner rather than the other way around. So in the case that the lingua franca evolved from trade it's more likely that it evolved from the language of the kingdom with the most gold available. And if we want to get super technical, most kingdoms in the real world didn't have just one language either until very recently. Up until the 19th century, I believe, most people in France couldn't actually speak French, for example. So it would actually be language spoken by the richest members willing to trade in the richest kingdom, which is likely to be the same language as the aristocracy of that land as there's likely prestige to be had in speaking it, but not necessarily.

It basically consists mostly of grunts punctured by blows to the back of the head for emphasis. Of the "vocabulary" 75% or it is insults or swear words, which people pick up very quickly. Both are the result of dialectal variants of Latin spoken by nobles in specific areas of their countries. French in particular is very different because it developed from the form of Larin spoken by nobles around Paris, far away from Rome. Neither were spoken by a majority of the population in either country until very recently.
>>
>>49872374
>Neither were spoken by a majority of the population in either country until very recently.

Vulgar Latin replaced Gaulish before the end of the first millenium. It is natural to assume that there was a period where bilingualism was not uncommon even for peasants and traders. But we're not talking about peasants, we are talking about adventurers and centuries old elves. It is expected for them to reach a degree of fluency in the lingua franca.

Merchant-tongue. A pidgin of dwarven and simplified elven invented by the acient dwarven merchant guilds for ease of learning and to encourage commerce; today It's talked in every market that counts something on the world stage and the kobold banks adopted it for their bureaocracy. If you're an adventurer you'd better be conversant in it or you'll have problems finding jobs far from home.

This. RL equivalent is English, but you could make the case for Spanish and French too, since they were also heavily involved in colonialism.

Yes, adventurers and century old elves would know those languages. But why would a farmer? Why would a lumberjack? A smith? Why would any of them suddenly learn it when they pick up a sword and start battling evil? No regular person knows it anyway.

As I mentioned in my first post, I like it when nobles, clerics and other learned figures speak a common language. But a language spanning all countries of the world, spoken by virtually everyone is just illogical.

Nobody handles banter very well when it strikes true.

Go on, go and meme a true American patriot about his fat ass country, Muriklaping, MAGA and shit like that.

Make it a setting appropriate language that is spoken commonly across the continent.

Common should not be spoken across the entire world.
