Nothing. They're actually just practicing for the upcoming inter-galactic running and contest: "The Gourmet Race". It's actually a very popular sport in other galaxies. Right now the top seeds for the competition are these two, so the Nids have quite a bit of work cut out for them.

No, all ctan were shareded. A ctan shard struggled to penetrate a biotitans outer shell in one of the books. The nids have avoided the dyson sphere containing (we assume) the outsider because why waste millions of nids trying to eat one thing that's gonna be one hell of a pain.
>>
>>49840509
>encircling the galaxy and attacking from multiple avenues

Ever herded a pack of sheep into their enclosure? It's basically the same thing. Fleeing sheep would seem to encircling their enclosures as they are driven inside.

Anyways we were already told what the Tyranids want in 2nd ED story. The Tyranids mission is to unite the universe under a single powerful mind so that they would be safe from Chaos.

>“I am Zoat,” the centaur said. “Please cease your confused intrusion into this home. You should honour the Masters from beyond the Deep. They shall find a suitable use for you as part of the multi-body that supports the Great Mind—the Mind that shall spread through all the universe.”
>Its voice was lulling, hypnotic—so they listened.
>“Your… engenderings… will partake in a Great Work,” it announced. “The Masters tell us that the Great Mind senses that there are… savage entities… within the warp which this galaxy floats upon, as glittering scum on a black lake—”
>“Tzeentch…” muttered Biff.
>Yeri darted a look of utter warning at his brother. With power-glove, Yeri mimicked the scribing of anathema upon bones… “Chaos…” Biff made a hex sign.
>Yeri looked on the point of leaping to muzzle Biff, lest Lex’s bones be put in peril.

>“Yes, Chaos,” sang the centaur. “Thanks be to the Great Mind that Guides, the Masters are immune to corruption!”
>“Your galaxy is crumbling under this corruption,” it hissed. “Our ships shall take your flesh, extract your genes, and forge instruments that will wash your worlds clean of…” It stared at Biff, eyes glittering, “…of the taint of Tzeentch. And… of other taints,” it added. “Do you fear the torments of this Tzeentch?”

>“And… of the other kindred torments of Chaos?” it asked. “Under the wise guidance of your new tyranid lords all flesh shall finally be remoulded into pure tools, serving the tyranid Overmind, which shall expel and quench all this tarnish utterly. You can never achieve that. For the traits of Chaotic tarnish are written within you. We can unwrite what was written. We shall delve for your daemons and expunge them! This is our message to you: withdraw, relinquish, yield, and serve. Your stars shall be saved by the Masters!”

More text for the text god.

>The Tyranids were what ants and termites would be if they could evolve further and become intelligent. What made such intelligence incomprehensible was that the Tyranids had never evolved emotions. They were aware that such concepts such as sympathy and honour existed in the species they harvested, but they viewed them only in the abstract and dismissed them as evolutionary mistakes. Gene coding for emotion was never made use of by the Hive Fleets.

>Yes, the Tyranids were intelligent, but intelligence was not a quality particularly valued by the Hive Mind. A Tyranid creature could reason, but it never did so out of self-interest. Intelligence, like everything else, served only Tyranid hive instincts - or rather, it served the single great Tyranid instinct, the one overwhelming, compulsive urge.

>SURVIVE! AND SURVIVE FOREVER!

-Hive Fleet Horror

So the Tyranids objective is to survive forever, and perhaps overcome the horrors of the Warp?
>>
>>49840524
This has been retconned so hard, current codex has nids only encountering daemons in our galaxy and not having an understanding of them at first

They were originally looking for new DNA to keep themselves from stagnating, they had existed as long as the universe itself. However nowdays they are alien bugs that are eating galaxies with little spoken about their background
>>
>>49830529

>This has been retconned so hard, current codex has nids only encountering daemons in our galaxy and not having an understanding of them at first

False, the recent codex doesn't say this. If you referring to Shadowbrink, then know it happened in 999 41K.

Previous to that year, the Tyranids fought numerous battles against the daemons legions since they invaded the galaxy hundreds of years ago. Such encounters had daemon armies spawning within hive ships and tearing them apart.

So what we take from this is that the Hivemind has grown senile and can no longer retain memories reliably. This is now canon.
>>
>>49840568
>perhaps overcome the horrors of the Warp?
Well if you're going to survive forever, you might as well try and destroy one of the biggest threats to your survival.
>>
>>49840523
>A ctan shard struggled to penetrate a biotitans outer shell in one of the books.

What? Getting sick of Tyranidfags being lying gits. The Shard effortlessly smacked the biotitan around before punching its fist inside the biotitan and exploding.

Then it proceeded to fly around grabbing Tyranid feeding towers and ripping them apart and then went on to kill thousands of Tyranids before jumping into space to another planet to repeat the process on another planet.

Then it went to a space platform and ignited in flames eradicating all Tyranids organisms on moon sized platform. Then it powered the platform to shoot a Death Star like Lazor that caused tremendous damage to the Hive Fleet tendril.

I personally prefer the idea that they are returning to the milkyway after long hibernation rather than travelling between galaxies. If only because the distance between galaxies is so immense. Just treating the galaxy like a big old farm for new genetics that evolve between the millions of years.
>>
>>49840794
That would be rubbing it too close to the Necron shtick.
>>
>>49829868
Nothing.

The Horus Heresy series revealed why the Tyranids came to the galaxy in the novel pharos. Some Space Marines accidentally activated a tachyon beacon that alerted the Nids in a far-off galaxy.

>Those Blood Angels closest to the digestion lake thought Dante must have ordered an orbital strike when they saw the fire descending from the sky. As it neared, though, it was not a missile they beheld, but the shape of a flame-wreathed god. Nyadra’zatha, the Burning One, fell from the sky like a meteor. When the C’tan Shard struck the ruins it sent a plume of molten rock hundreds of yards into the air, and a wave of fire rolled out through the ruins incinerating everything in its path. Hundreds of weapon-beasts were blasted into ashen shadows in that single instant.

>The bio-titan turned its beady eyes upon the newcomer and launched a withering salvo of bio-shells. The C’tan barely seemed to react as the ordnance burst and burned upon its coruscating halo of fire. Dante ordered his men to hold their positions as the two nightmare creatures fought. The commander had limited faith in his Necron allies, but had none in the creation of flame that he now beheld.

>Flesh and fire rampaged across the ruins, the staggering strength of the bio-titan pitted against the reality-bending will of the C’tan. Even as the two giants fought to the death, the battle continued to rage around them. Dante’s Blood Angels – now in control of the Fabricators’ Gate and the bridge to the cogitator spires – held their ground against waves of weapon-beasts and bio-ordnance. On the far side of the lake, the Necrons were equally pressed, and Anrakyr stood atop a pile of dismembered alien corpses, his crackling warscythe gripped in two skeletal fists.

>Then, with a final mournful hiss the Hierophant pitched forward into the rubble. As it tried to rise, the C’tan thrust a burning hand into its cracked and dripping carapace. Steam began to pour from the creature’s wounds as the star god cooked it from within – then it exploded in a shower of smoking ichor.
>>
>>49840856
>In moments the battle had turned back in the allies’ favour. With the bio-titan down, the Blood Angels surged forward into the Tyranids’ inner defences, while the Necrons turned their firepower on the surviving weapon-beasts. The C’tan Shard, meanwhile, ascended into the nest of capillary towers on a pillar of fire, tearing into them with burning fists.

Posted the actual fight for FYI.

When Yriel wounded the Hivemind, it was said that it raged at him for being the first being in a long time that actually managed to harm it directly.

This implies that the Hivemind was attacked directly before. That it was wounded before. This implies that Tyranids met beings with psycic powers capable of injuring the Hivemind. These beings might be things that the Nids are fleeing from.

The Chaos Gods fear nothing from the Tyranids. Heck, the Shadow in the Warp doesn't scare even daemons.

Ah, yes. I remember that one.

Guy Haley is a good author, and does a great job of making the tyranids seem like more of a threat than just about any portrayal of chaos.

Not gonna lie. Chaos is a massive threat. But with all the hamfisted 'Saturday morning cartoon villainry' they do, it's hard to not think that the tyranids would just beefcake them in an instant.

I would have loved to see the Culture warships take on a completely violent and un-reasonable race from 40k, imagine just one GCU against a hive fleet, free to use all of its weaponry, just epic

That being said, the Minds are supposed to use some sort of 4D technology to operate at full capacity, and in the grim darkness of the far future, this fourth dimension could be the Warp, in this case the ship would be forced to use only a fraction of its power or get instant-corrupted, creating the most badass chaos warship in the galaxy, probably Tzeetch-oriented

>He awoke and sat upright. Specifications for new devices! There it was in delicate detail, a way to miniaturize Holzmann generators. Two centimeters, no more. And much cheaper! How was that smuggled into my mind? He slipped out of bed, not awakening Murbella, and groped his way to a robe.

>He heard her snuffle as he let himself out into the workroom. Seating himself at his console, he copied the design from his mind and studied it. Perfect! Englobement for sure. He transmitted to Archives with a flag for Odrade and Bellonda.

>With a sigh, he sat back and examined his design once more. It vanished in a return to his dream scroll. Am I still dreaming? No! He could feel the chair, touch the console, hear the field buzzing. Dreams do that.

>The scroll produced cutting and stabbing weapons, including some designed to introduce poisons or bacteria into enemy flesh.

>Projectiles.

>He wondered how to stop the scroll and study details.

>"It's all in your head!"

>Humans and other animals bred for attack scrolled past his eyes, hiding the console and its projection. Futars? How did Futars get in there? What do I know about Futars?

>Disruptors replaced the animals. Weapons to cloud mental activity or interfere with life itself. Disruptors? I've never heard that name before.

>Disruptors were succeeded by null-G "seekers" designed to hunt specific targets. Those I know.

>Explosives next, including ones to spread poisons and bacteriologicals.

>Deceptives, to project false targets. Teg had used those.

>Abruptly, the shimmering net from his vision replaced scrolling weapons and he saw the elderly couple in their garden. They glared at him. The man's voice became audible. "Stop spying on us!"

>Idaho gripped the arms of his chair and jerked himself forward but the vision disappeared before he could study details.

>Spying?

>Implying the Great Devourer isn't the winner of the great game in its own pantheon of Warp Gods from their native galaxy, in which the emotions reflected were more primal because the warp-sensitive life-forms they reflected were less sapient: the God of Hunger won, ate its galaxy, and is now eating others.

Nonsense, old fluff (although likely irrelevant now) says they are almost as old as the universe and have spent their time travelling and devouring

Good idea, anon. 40k doesn't have any Crystal Spires and Togas-style aliens.

They'd probably be accused of ripping off the Protoss at this point, though.
