The Prospero fire rises edition.

Old thread >>49765683

we talked about Dark Angels Wings, Custodes were trash-talked, someone was sick of yet another Iron Warrior player, someone else noticed other legion players didn't like to join the thread. Horus' topknot was mentioned and loyalty of the Emperor's Children put in question.

oops lost this on the tail of the last thread, so here it is again.
Give me your grumpy wisdom HHg

OK, so in my indecision I have decided on Death guard.
Back when I was a starry eyed kid in the rogue trader era, I had my own special snowflake chapter (adeptus antares scorpions) and their mary sue power was rad. They were immune to it, and all the missile launchers were equipped and the boss dudes had rad grenades.

So. Here's my 10 existential problems.
1) How to build an army? I have 1 box of Calth at the moment. Do I just compulse buy everything or build a nice fluffy list then buy it?
2) muh calth terminators and muh future prospero terminators will be of no use to me, because deathshoud and grave warden termis are simply better.
3) The reaping; is it obligatory? (is it the best rite of war for death guard, or will others be worthwhile?)
4) gets hot flamers; how reliable are those?
5) if terminators and contemptor class talons, then how the flying fuck do i fit any destroyer squads in?
6) the reaping limits to a single fast attack: is there a go to no brainer choice? I really like the look of the jet bikes and the jet car, but damn they look expensive (in $ and pts) and flimsy (in game)
7) 3 units of 15 dude tactical squads as base troops: good idea or not?
8) breacher squads: y/n ?
9) one sicaran battle tank or two?
10) i don't like the rhino variants (pred, vindic, whirlwind etc) i hope i don't need them?

While cool, I am somewhat annoyed that BoP has so much specific shit as opposed to BaC's generic legion stuff.

I have to admit raven guard looks fucking kewl too.

You think Darkness is your ally Corax? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it. Molded by it. I never saw the light of the Emperor until I was a grown Ogryn, and by then it was nothing to me but blinding!

1) Buy a box of BoP once it's out
2) terminators are situational at best
3) Reaping and Creeping Death are both very good.
4) still very reliable; your 3+ save will probably handle it
5) You don't. Drop something if you don't have the points.
6) Attack Bike or Speeder, if you must. Death Guard do better as an all-infantry army anyway.
7) 20 guys are usually better, you either go small enough to fit in a rhino/pod or you go full blob.
8) y
9) More Sicarians are generally good, but Death Guard do better as an all-infantry army anyway.
10) Not necessarily. Death Guard do better as an all-infantry army anyway.
>>
>>49781136
All you lost was the characters and rather shitty monopose dread. I'm sure you can sell/trade those custodes and sisters to make the kit worth your while.
>>
Which named custodes do y'all think we'll get special character rules for? Constantin Valdor seems like a safe bet, especially as he was actually on Prospero for the whole inferno malarkey. Aquillon in case anybody wants to recreate that one fight on Isstvan is possible but unlikely (not least because that would probably force FW to do Argel Tal's rules too, and it seems like they really don't want to do that). Not sure who else though. Perhaps we'll get a FW custodes that nobody had heard of up to this point?
>>
>>49781147
Because the Custodes and the SoS will totally work against the Emperor's interests *during* the heresy, i.e. the time when the traitors are already, y'know, traitors.
>>
>>49781128
>1) How to build an army? I have 1 box of Calth at the moment. Do I just compulse buy everything or build a nice fluffy list then buy it?
Easy as it goes. Tactical blobs are a thing, and DG run them pretty well.
>2) termies
Bash yourself together some powerscythes if it bothers you, or run Night Lord allies for teleportation
>3) The reaping; is it obligatory? (is it the best rite of war for death guard, or will others be worthwhile?)
Depends on how you want to run it, i know a guy who runs orbital assault with Morty for a bizarrely mobile force
>4) gets hot flamers; how reliable are those?
They fucking destroy infantry, but too many of them is wasted. Unless you only ever play guys who run 60+ bodies, only bring one squad of support/heavy with chemflamers, or flamers in general.
>5) if terminators and contemptor class talons, then how the flying fuck do i fit any destroyer squads in?
>destroyers
they're shittier than wyches in 40k, they're well and truly the worst things in the legion book.
>6) the reaping limits to a single fast attack: is there a go to no brainer choice? I really like the look of the jet bikes and the jet car, but damn they look expensive (in $ and pts) and flimsy (in game)
Your FA is, WAAC speaking, usually best spent on air support to keep other flyers off your back
>7) 3 units of 15 dude tactical squads as base troops: good idea or not?
Nope, run them as three units of 20 with apothecaries.
>8) breacher squads: y/n ?
Nay, they're better than destroyers and thats the only nice thing about them i can think of
>9) one sicaran battle tank or two?
One to start with
>10) i don't like the rhino variants (pred, vindic, whirlwind etc) i hope i don't need them?
welcome to heresy, do your own thing and see how it works. The only things i ever see in rhinos are AL dudes, vindicators, and the one guy who runs armoured spearhead

No breachers, no assault marines, 12 very specific not-generic-marines models ... yeah I can't get any value out of this set. Maybe I'll get 10 tartaros terminators off somebody who won't use them, but even that is questionable.

But this things must be a must have for MK III legions/fans
>>
>>49781247
>implying we won't get a breacher upgrade kit the week after
WEW LAD
>>
>>49781128
>1)

You'll have 60 tacticals. Maybe 20 man blob of MkIVs and 20 man blob of MkIIIs with 10 and 10 for (heavy) support squad. DG flamer squads might be fun. You get rad grenades from The Reaping, can get CCWs for the unit and chem ammo for the flamers. Huff that dank shit.

If the MkIII kits are like the MkIV ones, you should have a spare torso per 10 dudes. Get an extra pair of legs and a backpack from a bits store and you'll have 66 marines.

>2)

What do you mean are of no use? You can make the cataphractii into grave wardens and tartaros into deathshrouds. Get some grenade launchers as guns for the cataphractii (you can use the captain as is for the sergeant) and some hand flamers (genestealer cultists got loads of them) and scythes for the tartaros.

>3)

It's all up to you. I took it because rad grenades for all characters and Move Through Cover fuck yeah. You can phosphex the shit out of the board and your dudes don't give a shit. Or driver your tanks and bikes through terrain no problem.

>4)

Support squad with 10 flamers is going to kill a bunch of marines (and even more Militia) and suffer like 0.5 unsaved wounds.

>5)

The Reaping gives characters rad grenades. Every DG squad is a Destroyer squad. If you got a BaC contemptor, maybe give it a second assault cannon and use it as a Mortis for some air cover?

>6)

I went with bikes. Cheap and with Move Through Cover I can just cruise through any and all terrain without a care in the world.

>7)

20 or 10 in a rhino. Don't forget apothecaries for the 20.

>8)

Situational. I'd stock up on tacticals first.

>9) one sicaran battle tank or two?

What else do you want as HS? The Reaping makes Heavy Support squads Troops, so you got options.

>10)

You can always use Land Raiders.

That's my issue as well. I mean, I'm glad Custodes and Sisters of Silence are finally getting models, but I can't use either with my Word Bearers, and both not-Bjorn and Ahriman willl probably require extensive conversion work being done on them.
I'd have preferred a generic Librarian and Centurion as HQs and maybe a Deredeo as a vehicle, if I'm totally honest.
>>
>>49781268
You can ofcourse already get that breacher upgrade set from FW, so the upgrade set was there way before this thing. But it's just less convenient that there are no shields already included in the box

>>

>>
Bit of a downer that GW picked Ahriman and not 2 characters created just for this box, like with B@C.

Because we all know what happens to Ahriman for the next 10k years, the outcome of this story basically spoils itself.

Unless we get another huge retconn ofcourse and people world wide will be forced to burn their 40k Ahriman models.

The FAQ would be pretty meaningless anyway, but look, in two posts I got the info I needed.

20 marine blob squads
sell tartaros, get deathshroud and grave wardens.
get Sicaran
get aeroplane and put rad missile launchers all over it.
Don't bother with breachers of destroyers.

The only thin i don't know that maybe the tactica may say; is what makes destroyers so shit?
>>

>what makes destroyers so shit
They're just a bit ridiculous, a very cool concept but they have a lot of rules and gear that make them expensive without being proportionally useful.

Here's what I'd do, drop a pistol from them, remove counter attack and lower their Ld by one for the grunts. Then add x1 power weapon per 5 guys like with assault squads and up their attacks to 2 base for the grunts. No change to points.

Then you have a squad of ten with jump packs and 2+1 power weapons capable of 40 attacks on the charge, 12 are power weapons, for 355 points. Still only as survivable as regular marines though.

Nah Destroyers just need a points drop and rules for the bio-chem ammo their bolt pistols are suppose to have according to the fluff in their unit entry.

>TFW you read that part of their fluff and look over to the rules, only to see that it was all a lie.
>>
>>49781117
>"Approx 60% added value."
>£95
So let's say theoretically around £150-160 with everything sold separately. Let's assume standalone prices of:
>5 tartaros same as 5 cataphractii: £40
>10 Mk IIIs same as 10 Mk IVs: £30 (so £90 for 30)
>Characters same as B@C characters: £30
Those come to £160 by themselves, from which I can only conclude that the custodes and sisters of silence models will be free when released as standalones. Or GW, for some reason, are advertising the box as having a smaller discount than it actually does. Or I just can't into maths today.
>>
>>49781474
They're judging from AUD/NZD values, which have a 40% increase
>>
>>49781470
I like them to have power weapons since they'll be in CC to get any proper benefits but Poisoned 4+ pistols sounds good, I play Dangels though so it isn't like we need any more poisoned bolt ammo.

The ammo could also do something different rather than wounding on a fixed value. Like have a scary AP or a Str value that depends on the number of succesfull hits.

I'd avoid powerweapons to keep destroyers different from powerweapon vets, a number of legion specific units, and command squads. Maybe just 2 attack base would be enough, because 40 attacks on the charge in combination with rad grenades is aready kind of scary, even without AP 2 or 3
>>

>While other Legions might get Ld bonuses or re-rolls, the ability to ignore ranged casualties and being one of the few Legions with access to widespread Stubborn and Fearless and thus ignore negative penalties as a result of failed assaults while also ignoring ranged casualties means the Iron Warriors can lay claim to having some of the best Morale rules in the entire Heresy, but you'll need a good plan lest your dudes die for nothing.
>...by sheer dint of ignoring an entire phase worth of morale troubles, Iron Warriors can ensure their soldiers always HOLD THE LINE. Furthermore, this lessens the need for transports as your infantry will be more capable of braving enemy fire (specially AP3 Pinning artillery, very common in 30K), easing the use of 20-men tac blobs (who seldom fit inside transports), or you can divert those points into bringing more Terminators, tanks or fast units that can take advantage of the distraction. The battle will now turn into a meatgrinder for both sides, welcome to the Iron Warriors!
>Ride the Ironfire...The bonus functions near any and all Iron Warriors units, not necessarily infantry. It can be near the Spartan carrying Golg's terminators for all you care.
They CAN footslog. That doesn't necessarily mean they should. But they can, as in some of they will die for sure, but they won't run away.

This exact same colour is Devlan mud, had a bit left on my brush after the basing so I just randomly applied some.
To get a same colour but better effect, just use rhinox hide (the go-to when weathering) with the sponge/foam technique.

The larger problem for any sort of generic-legion-consul-conversion of ahriman is going to be how the torso and arms are set up. It's not cut like a standard multipart torso, it's cut at an angle.

You'd have to totally rebuild the torso, or cut it off entirely and replace it. Probably easier to just sell it off and buy a cheap BaC dude for your conversoins.
>>

why would they be? They're only cheap because everyone has dupes. Big Bjorn and the Albanian will be similarly inexpensive from people buying lodseboxes for custodes and memes of silence.

>>
>>49783222

Magnus and Pert did some digging in ancient Terran ruins.

>During his studies, Perturabo learned of the ancient people known as the Firenzii. Captivated by the history of the past, Perturabo and his brother Magnus of the Thousand Sons Legion spent many months together in search of the buried secrets of Mankind's past glories that had been swept away in the chaos of the Age of Strife, known by Terrans as Old Night. It was the esoteric writings of the world's former masters that most interested him. He cared more for the ancient philosophies of the lost civilisations of Terra than their mechanical wonders, but it was a heady time of exploration for both Primarchs. Perturabo got along well with his brother Magnus, for both Primarchs shared a love of learning, and a hunger to know new things. Perturabo was not a Primarch to whom the natural ebb and flow of friendship came easily. His friendship was not easily achieved, but his loyalty, once won, was as unbreakable as the hardest iron.
>>
>>49783323
Well, I mean, even if he was born on Terra, Tizca is where he truly became who he was.

The problem is that Pert's charaterization is probably the most inconsistent out of all the Primarchs.

The Black Library books and the forgeworld books massively contrast one another in terms of his personality and actions.

Black Library tries to go for a more multidimensional route, so that we can symphatize with him I guess. To give him a proper motive for going traitor.

Forgeworld books on the other hand, makes him basically "I'm heartless for no reason" from day one. With his whole decimation of his own Legion for not living up to expectations.

On this note, I actually kind of go with the BL interpretation more. Considering the guy who wrote the FW stuff is pretty well known for absolutely hating the Iron Warriors.

HNNNNG. Loyalists from the Traitor Legions a best. It's only sad EC and DG are the most uncommon of loyalists, given how most of those legions were at Istvaan, and how DG almost always fought as a legion.
I don't know about the Luna Wolves and World Eaters.

>In fact, isn't Anatolia is Asia Minor? That means Emps is asian as well.
Anatolia is Turkey, but the Turks arrived there from the east pretty late (when they took down the Byzantine Empire).

Back in 8000BC, Anatolians were probably pretty white, in between Greeks and Syrians. We don't really know, though. We have more information about language and cultural practices but those can be spread regardless of race (after all, Celtic and Hindi come from the Proto-Indo-European language... which may have spread from Anatolia).

I am a casul and would say fuck it and still use reavers etc.

Sunkillers were probably kited in MkIII. The pic says Iron pattern was usually reserved for specialized units, and you said a while ago you gave your HSSquads Void Hardened armour. Maybe they'd trade some speed for increased protection, especially when fighting at lascannon range.
ZM maybe means MkIII is worn by even more units, as they are aware people bring flamers to tunner fights.
>>
>>49784651
The traitors have the advantage of being interesting all Heresy long, especially the ones that fall to Chaos and change during the war.

The loyalists each have their big moment (Prospero, Isstvan V, the Shadow Crusade, Terra, Caliban – okay, I guess the IF have two when you count Phall) but only about half of them have featured in FW books so far. And as you say, most of the loyalists spend a few years of the war not doing anything interesting.

I really like that the BL books gave the White Scars an interesting story before their return to Terra. They’re pretty much on their own for the first four years after Prospero and Isstvan trying to delay the traitors on their side of the Ruinstorm, cut off from the DA/UM/BA. They’re at least half-spent by the time they make it out of there.

As for the UM, read Betrayer – the Word Bearers and World Eaters chew through much more of Ultramar than just Calth. Then they fight the Night Lords (those books aren’t so good though). Their journey to Terra might be more interesting than we currently know of. They’ll be a major force coming at the traitors from behind, either reconquering lost territory or destroying traitor reinforcements en route. And they’re going to be the stars of the Scouring. So don’t be afraid to start them.

Their rites of war are weak because their special units are so strong. I’d pick a generic RoW based on your playstyle of choice.

>>
>>49784942
I just don't like the Mk IV snouts.
>>
>>49784957
>Do you guys use sealing..varnish? Is that the word?
Yeah, varnish or overcoat. Definitely use them.

Back when minis were metal I could only get decent protection by using a gloss coat (better protection) and then matte/flat coat over that to cut the shininess. With plastic or resin you usually don't need to do that - however, decals and some washes work best over a gloss coat, so it's worth considering.

You also want to use a varnish if you use those technical markers for blacklining or drawing details. Some of those markers are great for metallics, too. But they'll rub right off until you coat them.
>>
>>49784941

I haven't noticed a difference between Tamiya and Testor's, which are the two that are common around here (both meant for scale modeling). Read up on proper procedure to warm up the cans and be careful with humidity.

Washing metal figures with soap before undercoating also helps with the chipping, but only a little.

What's the point of the 'orphans of betrayal' and 'outcast sons' saying that all RoW can be taken by all legions and all sides, if they then go on to say it can only be taken by certain legions. Or can I just not into grammar

I may finally be getting sucked into starting up a 30K army now that there will be a few others in my group making the plunge. So I have a few general questions:

What's the common point range?
Related: At what level can I feel okay about including Mortarion? I don't want to let this lovely model go un-used.

As a long time Nurgle CSM player, I want to go with the Death Guard. As such, I'd like to run a couple of massive Tactical Squads. Is this going to work out for me and what might be the best way to back them up?

>>
>>49786182
Common points range is around 2000+ points for a proper HH game, HH is the game GW wishes 40k was.

You can obviously play at lower levels though, but the high points costs usually mean your army ends up quite small.

Being a LoW, Mortarion can only take up a maximum of 25% of your army, so once you cross this limit I'd say it's alright to take him.

A few massive tac squads can work in this game, especially with such a hardy army as death guard, but I'm not sure if their special rules prohibit them from running or if that's jsut a rule of one of their Rites of War. Make sure you watch out for things that could mass delete your dudes, like vindicators and artillery. Back them up with apothecaries and some big tanks of your own.

Why can't we have this Mortarion?

Anyway
>What's the common point range?
2000 pts. Some do less, some do much more.
>At what level can I feel okay about including Mortarion?
2k pts would feel like squeezing it in. Read his rules, -> >>49786306

Rite of War Creeping Death. Again, please read the pasta.

Common points values seem to be 1000-1500 for Zone Mortalis and 2500-3000 for open battles.

Nothing wrong with 2000pt battles but I would avoid primarchs and most superheavies at that stage. At 2500 they're fine, but they do become a major focus that you won't always want. That's why a lot of people aim for 2500 points plus a primarch.

Big tactical squads are great for Death Guard - it's pretty much their thing. Get some Dreadnoughts, legion-specific Terminators (Deathshroud or Grave Wardens) and some artillery. Note that quad launchers are considered cheesy if you start taking a large number of them. Medusas are a common choice as well. That's the only problem with Death Guard, their armies tend to look the same. If you like a different unit, take it just for the sake of variety.

You have to roll LOS! before saves, you can't LOS! a wound that has already been LOS!'d, and you have to allocate the LOS! wound on the closest model to the original target so there's only a limited amount of shenanigans you could do.

Not really, I'd imagine once they start working on it we'll have a better idea, for now I'm just using pic related and associated art as inspiration.

By jagged edges do you mean like the edge of a sawblade or like the swords in the WHFB Empire Greatsword kit(RIP)? For the latter, that exists already, it's called a Calibanite Flammbard.

Only when the trees reach up and blot out the sky will the Lion return to us in his full, miniature-scaled glory.
Inb4 the Lion's base has him stepping over a log

Sawblade. Don't know why but I like it.

Nonsense! The Lion's model will have bionic Beavers eating the log out of his way.

The Lion spends his free time building log cabins, not because he likes building, but rather because he likes creating displays out of tree corpses.

I feel I should point out: people mentioned that at low points 1000-1500 Zone Mortalis is favoured, canonically Death Guard are the best legion at it, and that holds pretty well on the table as well.

Incidentally, if you ever find yourself with a friend too many, invite them to play a ZM game against you where you're fielding Mortarion (either 2000+ points or you're running Primarch's Chosen) because he's hilariously broken in ZM

5 Pheonix Termis with shriekers(280) charge 5 deathshroud (210)

1 phoenix termi dies to overwatch from the flamers

Phoenix do 6 wounds. Shroud LoS 3 of them, save one, spread 5 unsaved wounds around. One shroud dies, because you have to keep putting wounds on the one you start with, but LoS keeps a second from dying.

Shroud swing back kill between 1-3 depending on how lucky you get with reaping blow placement.

And then the phoenix are AP3 and die horribly.

Shroud are god-tier termis. This is without the usual Morturg granting them endurance and assuming the Phoenix get the charge.

What caliber are 40k's Heavy Bolters? It's strange 30k Heavy bolters use the same caliber than the 40k regular bolter but have +1S and AP4. Perhaps the bolt themselves are different beyond mere diameter.

Don't choke on a dick. You simply forgot about that pic. Or choke on dicks if that's your thing, I won't judge you.

>>49786681
How has the ".75 caliber" slipped past you, it's mentioned everywhere bolters are in 40k fluff. Before HH books the only time you'd see bolters in any other caliber was in very special individual cases and fanon.

1 inch is a number I've seen thrown around, though only place I can reliably place it is the manual for the Space Marine video game.

The Sol pattern magazine does look rather long, so maybe it packs longer bolts?

Phoenix do 6 wounds. Shroud LoS 3 of them, save one, spread 5 unsaved wounds around. One shroud dies, because you have to keep putting wounds on the one you start with, but LoS keeps a second from dying.

That's not how it works. You have to allocate all wounds onto one model until he dies, and his LOS! are allocated to the nearest model.

What would happen is deathshroud A gets 6 wounds allocated to him, he rolls to LOS! all 6 and 3 pass, those 3 get allocated to deathshroud B. Deathshroud A rolls saves, passes 1 and dies while Deathshroud B rolls saves, passes 1 and dies, in total, 2 deathshroud dead.

If they had failed all their saves in the same situation, any overkill wounds on deathshroud A would get allocated to a model in base contact of the DG player's choosing since they were regular wounds, while the overkill wounds on deathshroud B would get allocated to the model second closest to deathshroud A, since they were LOS! wounds. That's still some shenanigans, but you can't go "lol 1 wound on everyone" like with old nob bikers.
