Back in my Freeform Roleplay days, a few people were playing established characters, and I was playing Lelouch.

As a litmus test, I'd basically walk by someone, and they would suddenly find themselves standing somewhere completely different and find themselves accused of a fairly serious crime. This was done to see who would throw a sperg when their power fantasy gets subject to a no-save. These actually happened in a somewhat-vacuum, in-game, Lelouch was firmly established as the cause of various shenanigans and they would've gotten off on all charges.
>>

Having it from the start doesn't make them precious though. Might as well be in a heated amphitheatre at that point. One time my character in 3.x/pf took a point of permanent strength damage. Mostly because my GM forgot how poisons worked in core.

Rules-lawyering enough prevented the second part of the damage, which was something like 11 temporary score damage. He was going to make me take it on the second turn after being poisoned with no save. Thats not how regular poisons do. I even knew which poison it was.

That said, i'd still taken the -1 permanent str. So since my characters entire thing was strength, i'd have him grumble about it at times he might have otherwise hit, or killed. I wasn't able to get rid of it for a while because i needed restoration, not lesser, and the only priests in town had been driven out by the head official because he was going on about some shit about "The temple of pelor has not protected us as they should have", despite most of the issue's being solved by us and most of them not having anything to do with the temple or its jurisdiction. wererats stealing shit all over town. Us being attacked in a dark alley. Things like that.

All in all, it was really well played, and my character had been saying since the king initially announced this that it was probably mind control. Gave solid reasoning too. of course, no one believed my character. A couple party members did, but the rest of the town remained skeptical. So when we sit down in front of the head official and i mention that it wasn't even the temple's job to deal with any of this shit, but the town guard, his character faltered and repeated himself in the same glassy tone, and a mindflayer walked in.

Pic related is the GM's rendition of what the other half of the party heard while they were being promptly attacked by the mindflayers ogre ally in the hall. All said and done, the things were dead, the official knocked out, and the priests were back at the temple the next day to heal me.

and thats the story of how i got my STR back.

The majority of guards wouldn't have dust of appearance. Rather, thats something thats extremely odd for an entire regiment to have, unless they have an issue with invisible people.

On top of this, how the fuck was the person seen that they needed to use dust of appearance?

>>49764559
I wouldn't go so far as to have dust of appearance on random guards (shit's expensive) but in a world where people can turn invisible and this is generally a known thing, I would definitely have the occasional guard carry some sand or flour or something. At the very least you can throw that stuff on the floor and watch for footprints.

Similar thing with shapeshifter defenses involving passwords or mindrape inspection day. Nobody likes mindrape inspection day, but that's what you signed up for.
>>
>>49764830
Every guard, everywhere, in every land, has an issue with invisible people.
>>
>>49764872
Fair enough, but as >>49764868 points out, shits expensive. Unless they are being given that shit and its being treated as an expense, it wouldn't make sense for rando guards to have it. Like he said, flour or some shit would also work. You are invisible, not intangible.

And no one has said anything about how that singular guard saw him and all of them threw dust at once, with no communication, while someone was fucking invisible. If they heard him, maybe. If they'd had cause to believe he was even there, maybe.

But for an entire guard regiment to throw dust of appearance at you at once while you are likely invisible for all intents and purposes (which is the only reason to use dust of appearance specifically), that is obviously the DM saying fuck you, you are fighting.

The GM probably either hated the player or had a rogue break their campaign over their knee before.
It reminds me of GMs that try to run a mystery in D&D and then contort the universe to fuck over divination casters.

I will never understand the philosophy of not letting your players excel at what they excel at.
>>

I should mention that the escape artist part always ended with either her rolling 20's and escaping or rolling 19 or less and getting the response "The ropes and gag are magic, and you can't remove them."
It was rather annoying when the whole of our party couldn't do anything sneaky when our gm had such a lust for rogue hatred

Why on earth would you allow them to roll to see if they 'find' the trap?

Use their base find trap score as a passive ability and then either inform them that the trap is there ahead of time based on that or tell them when they trip it. If they ask to search for a trap, have them describe how they want to search and inform them accordingly without rolls.

The same should go for stealth. You should only have players roll when they might have a chance of being seen. They should never roll a stealth check, know roughly how good their sneakiness is and then decide whether to go or not via metagame knowledge. They decide to sneak, and then the roll comes at the crucial moment - if they fail they are spotted, if they succeed they pass.

>>
>>49781787
if you want a realistic approach, it depends on a skill. If you roll performance for example, you should probably know you didn't do well. If you roll perception, you can't perceive that you didn't perceive well
>>
>>49771109
consequences = railroading

>>
>>49769586
What if , depeding on thieir roll they got a number of tokens, and they can trade these tokens in to get a true anaswer from the GM on questions like is there a Trap or How to sabotage this specific trap. So they ´d have to prioritize what they need to know for this strech of the dungeon, before the circumstances change enough that they can roll again. What abot that?
>>
>>49781787
For skill-type things, like cooking or climbing, yes it's obvious you fucked up, and the punishment is being unable to do the thing. For knowledge-type things like researching, detecting lies, or searching for something, it's not always obvious because you might have missed something, and the punishment is having to operate using false information. If there's no penalty and you can try over and over until you nat 20, why even roll in the first place?

How do people handle players spamming repeatable tasks?

Oh man I had a GM like that once.
>start in a random village
>"I need some money. My Rogue is going to try and pickpocket some tavern patrons while they're distracted by the Bard's performance."
>GM: "You can't do that since the village is full of psychic Paladin guards who are dedicated to punishing thievery and will almost certainly detect when someone is stealing."

I thought GMs this terrible were just a myth, a meme created by bored anons. But they are very, very real.

>>49782205
Start hurting them. Trying to climb a cliff side with your bare hands means bloodied fingers.
Anything physical like that can lead to minor damage. And if they end up getting themselves killed, it's their own damn fault for trying to brute force everything. You can hurt them materialistically too if you want. Suck at haggling? Lose some coin. Trying to perform some kind of impossible task? Break an item.

That sort of thing. Doesn't have to be overly cruel, just enough to show as a karmic warning.

Characters generally roll dice when faced with a task that is inherently dangerous, opposed by another character, or a binary pass/failure state (like a Knowledge check). 'Spamming' ability checks isn't really possible if you look at them that way. I'll give some examples.

>Inherently dangerous
When you try to scale a cliff and fail, you might fall and suffer harm, break your equipment in the attempt, and/or dislodge stones to make subsequent attempts harder. When you try to disable a trap and fail, you might trigger the trap in a way that harms you or an ally, you might somehow make the situation more dangerous, or you could only THINK that you disable it, only to trigger it when you try to bypass it.

>Opposed by another character
If you fail a check to arm-wrestle someone, you lose to them. If you fail to spot a character, you can't see them and trying again won't change that until circumstances change (like they move or you get a light source).

>Binary pass/failure state
If you fail a knowledge check, you don't know about something. That's... just about it. Not many others that fall into that category.

Regardless, the idea is that you shouldn't be able to attempt ability check over and over on the same task, or at least not without a loss of resources.
>>
>>49782205
On the first roll, I just say that he fail no matter what he try. It's not just one action, it's his capacity to scale the cliff.
If he fail, it's just that the cliff is too hard (not enough grip for example) for his character to scale it.
If he want to retry, he must come with a better plan.
