Re-asking from last thread:

2 things:

1: Bought a metal Grimaldus the other day, got no Servitor Cenobytes and was wondering if anyone got any ideas what I could use to convert my own, without green stuff if possible cause I really dislike working too much with it. Was thinking either roboting up some scouts, guardsmen or chaos cultists with a few BT bits

2: Friend of mine that is starting out asked me to paint his Anrakyr for him, if possible with a white-ish primary color instead of the normal grey/silver. Anyone got any tips for what colors would fit that category while sticking somewhat to the blue vibe he has going on?
>>

Because the short version is their a reformed unit of 3 different regiments after surviving the 3rd War for Armageddon. They've mixed Cadian gear as one of these regiments was trained by ex-Cadian Storm troopers (from the 2nd War of Armegeddon) and they bought most of their gear from mixed sources in the rush to raise more men. Hence why some have different shoulders, helmets and lasguns.

All of which is to explain the conversions I did because I was tired of the stock models thought it was cool.

Base Macragge/Kantor blue, layer Altdorf Guard Blue.

Highlight with Lothern Blue if you wanna go all-out, or maybe the same highlight as the flesh green if you want it to look worn. Remember to shade with same color as you're shading the regular Ork skin with.

What's a good way to prevent paint from chipping?

I just finished my first models but upon closer inspection I noticed some of the paint has rubbed all the way off down to the plastic.

Are there any sealants I should use or get?
>>
>>49733203
This usually happens when you haven't primed your mini with a proper primer. If you're using a normal acrylic to undercoat that is your issue. If not then perhaps get a varnish or something to seal it in.
>>
>>49733203
>>49733319

Also make sure you give your minis a good cleaning before you start painting them. Soap, water, and a tooth brush.
>>
>>49733319
My first mini I used Imperial Primer which came with the set.

It had been quite chunky and bubbly but ive since replaced it with a new pot.

Any recommended varnishes to seal them?
>>
>>49733381
And checking the next set of minis ive since primed with the new pot the primer seems to have definitely grabbed on a bit better as scraping it with my fingernail is a bit more difficult to get it to come off where as the original was coming off just from me handling it.

I wanted this creepy, semi-angelic face strapped to a clearly non-angelic body. A lot of the knight titans have these big snarling helmets full of cables and glowing eyes. I wanted to put a face on the Penitent Knight that was intimidating, but also completely different from anything else available. Penitent Engines and Arco-Flagellants put their pilots and body horror front and centre, but that wasn't an option here. This seemed like a good compromise.

>There are people who don't kit the fuck out of their guardsmen to make them look like ready for anything diehards.

Why even play guard, I bet these heretics call their army "Astra Militarum" too.

Also, playing Bolt Action is awesome for being an IG player. I have packs and misc gear out the wazoo. German heads in particular work great since their eagle emblem looks close enough to the Imperium to pass as regular IG bits.

Also, for guys trying to find nice cheap rucksacks, the Warlord plastic US GIs have double the packs they need in their kit, and make excellent IG backpacks. I've got all my guys wearing them and they fit perfectly.

>you know, anon, you really judge resin bits a lot. maybe if you put some together, you'd be okay with them! and you spent over $80 on 10 guardsmen worth of resin bits from Victoria and plastic bits from Anvil a while back...
>you're right, voice of my conscience. I should give Victoria a fair shake. After all, I admittedly messed up last time through inexperience. Let's go dig out my old bits box and put together another guardsman!

I come to you with the results, and a reaffirmation:

Fuck Victoria's bits. I think I had to use more glue to hold it to the base than I did to assemble my entire Fire Warrior squad earlier, and the rifle is a lot more cut up than it should ever have been. I will paint this guy, and he will be my one proud diver guardsman, out of the forty I planned on eventually assembling. And then I'll put the Bruvahlen regiment to rest.

On the plus side, between the Anvil, Maxmini, and Victoria bits, it looks exactly like I hoped. I just wish I could get more diving helmets for less than $5 each.

>>49734279
Mad Robot Plasma guns. He makes really nice weapons and I particularly like his plasmas. Theyre probably not the fanciest but they look nice and simple, something IG would use.

>>49734259
horribly for the most part. Except for the shotguns their Us marines come with oddly enough. It's mainly due to GW weapons (and 3rd party sci fi in general) being too big, whereas bolt action weapons are more realistic. Their shotguns look good though. Several of my vets have GI pump action shotties on their packs, like the sarge on the left in the pic.

>>49734233
well, yeah. Thats to be expected honestly. Thatd be like if I got pissed that guardsmen bits didn't fit space marines. Men are usually bigger than women, so of course they won't look right being mixed for the most part.

I can get why you're upset, but if I'm going to have women in my guard (and I do) I'm gonna go all the way, not just slap a head conversion on plastic cadians and call it a day.

That said, she's been cranking out more female regiments lately, so there are a lot more choices than there used to be.
>>
>>49734517
>>49734508 was the source of the "don't like mixed parts" hate. I picked up male bits for the uniforms, and the *male* bits don't fit with Guardsman-scale torsos. (The heads are Marine heads, but they're intentionally oversized.) Male bits should fit with male bits.

huh, sorry bout that, context implied you meant the women.

I've never had trouble with vics arms, and I stuck them to GW torsos all the time. Be that the old metal lasguns, the bagpipes, the artillery kit, etc. etc. Obviously I use Vic torsos now but that's just because I ran out of IG torsos and don't care to get any more.

What bits gave you trouble? I remember having to shave some lasgun arms a bit but nothing drastic. Mainly just want to know because lots of players ask me about bits in my community and I'd like to not steer them wrong.

We all have different tastes anon, its all good even if yours is wrong
>>
>>49734682
On that particular model, the length of the secondary arm and the angle it's bent at means the rifle can't be held in both hands (it's resting on the thigh instead). Every paired arm from Vic that I have has that length mismatch. The rifle being cut is more of an issue with the rifle sprues than the arms; the gun I wanted didn't have a "universal rifle arm" version. (I have a couple URA guns somewhere around here, and they have the same issue.) Waist is also slightly too small for a regular torso, but not so much as to cause issues.

The main problem I have right now is with adhesive. I use Loctite, since it's ridiculously good at holding GW plastic together instantly. On resin, even washed and cleaned? Be ready to use a third of a bottle per mini.

Vic is alao stupidly overpriced imo. The legs, arms, and rifles for 10 guys (5 rifles) cost as much as a Cadian box (or my native Skitarii) with dosh to spare, and I still had to buy torsos, heads, and special weapons.
>>
>>49734742
Oh yeah the loctite thing I noticed too. Ive never had a problem until this recent order, but there were a couple arms that just would not stay on unless I sat there and held it like plastic glue. No idea why it affects loctite, that stuff will hold damn near anything.

On the arms, some don't quite have the hand completely wrap around the gun I noticed. It looks weird at first but once it's all settled it looks good. Not sure if it's the same thing you're dealing with. I'm assuming you're diving guy here
>>49734508

He looks good how you have him, although I dont care for that gun in universal arms, I'd probably stick with the default option.

Other arms are weird because they don't quite go where they appear at first glance. For example, most go further forward than you'd think, and they taper down to paper thin at the shoulder to facilitate that.

I dunno, I will agree Vic stuff is not for amateurs. Its meant for the crazy autistic IG player who wants maximum detail and it shows. For a guy like me, thats great. For others, not so much. You think the infantry is bad, NEVER buy her taurox conversion kit. That is a special kind of hell that took a lot of tricks to do. Next time I'll buy a dollar store truck and cannibalise that instead.

Again, looks great, but damn it's tricky.

As for price, eh, compared to my other hobbies its small beans. Yeah a squad is $50 but it makes me happy and takes my mind off school/work so it's money well spent in my opinion, especially since no other company scratches my itch. That said she may be the most expensive IG option out there, even against FW.

Hope I'm not coming across as snobby, you're the first guy I've met who really didnt like her stuff so I was kind of just curious more than anything. Kind of like how I absolutely hate GW stuff because I've yet to find a single model that wasn't fucked up in some way, doesnt mean others won't like FW models and have good luck with their casts.
>>
>>49734829
>a squad is $50
Try $110 with shipping factored in to get these dudes. It's the main reason I stayed at one squad only; shit added up fast, and I couldn't keep buying all at once, so shipping would add up even faster.
>Hope I'm not coming across as snobby
No, of course not. If anything, I am, since I'm dismissing Vic overall as an option. I want to like her stuff, really! But it just doesn't work for my purposes, in pricing or in physical terms.
>>
>>49734867
>$110 for one squad

holy shit what.

Her squad deals are $49.50 or something like that and come with lots of bits. Plus free shipping (to USA at least) at $50. I'm guessing you're buying other stuff elsewhere.

Either way I understand, Guard is a hell of an army on any budget, but especially with fancy models like Vic or FW. These guys are essentially my dream project for a platoon. If it wasn't for kill team I probably would've never actually gotten around to doing it to be honest.

Either way good luck man, I'm sure you'll find something that works. IG bits are everywhere if you know where to look. Most of my squads have bits from like 10 different companies to get the look I want so the main factor is usually money more than anything sadly.

Looks like you should finish base coating everything desu. I know you have highlights and an illusion of fur depth, but honestly to me it just looks like you based 80% on white and havn't cleaned up yet.

Tau starter kit just arrived, not sure about colours.

>dark green armour
>off-cream clothing

>>
>>49736547

Depends on what you want really. Jungle fighters, city fighters, air drop troops, what's your theme?

With tau, a scheme with high contrast highlights is needed so there's nothing wrong with picking colors that are easy to edge highlight like greens. Green goes well with secondary colors that have red in it for contrast like purple and orange. For example, purple eye lenses and orange glowing plasma weapons on a dark green armor scheme.
>>

Most worlds are not suitable for life outside of dome/hive cities and iron is one the most common elements on most planets where life can survive, so a desert would likely be red like Mars, because of the rust.

Obviously it's not going to look well with MS paint graphics but this is a general idea of what you could do over shoulder pads and helmets. The stripes also make it really easy to make every mini a little different.

Gold should mostly be on the frilly things in my opinion, since it's a soft metal with really good head conduction so a golden grip on a flamer is not going to end well.

Confirmed for not understanding rudimentary physics.
Good or bad heat conduction doesn't affect melting point (high in the case of gold).
Also, high conductivity makes melting something more difficult as you cannot easily heat a small portion of it (the heat is quickly spread throughout its mass)

Why don't you do cobblestone bases the way they do cobblestone IRL, just substitute a few ingrediants.

All you need is smooth pebbles (purchasable from pet stores (think fish tank pebbles)) then do a nice thick layer of liquid green stuff and start pushing the pebbles into it. or gllue pebbles to the base (just make sure you sit something fat and heavy ontop so the rocks even out. then apply lots of liquid green stuff and gently wipe it off the top of the pebbles to give a smooth cobblestone look. hope this helps

>>49739551

Lightly brush it with 96% alcohol, that should melt the varnish and let it dry smoother. Don't let it pool though, just a light coating or it will strip the paint off too. Or another coat of varnish since the solvent will do the same but this makes the varnish thicker.

Well my guardsmen are supposed to be a sort of "bad company" for guardsmen from their homeworld.

But yeah the ork thing makes more sense.

If they're a penal legion, it's possible. Commissars specifically exist to keep people in line and away from chaos though. Very quick trigger finger too, usually quite enhanced over normal line soldiers.
>>
>>49741457
That's true, I probably wouldn't have had them turn on him like that.

I'll go with the Ork thing. Maybe I'll go get an Ork boy and put his head on the commissar's base.

I'm working on a chaplain blowing a genestealer's brains out by putting bullet holes in his body and a kill shot lined up blowing its skull to bits as part of a diorama. The chaplain will be removable so I can use him for play.

Grab a boy and make something similar? They're cheap and with some tamiya clear or water effects glue you can make some really cool spray effects, like mid blowout.

OK fellas, I wouldn't mind advice on how to attain a smooth pearlescent look.

I'm wanting to paint my PHR ships with it on their carapace surfaces to represent an exotic, hyper-advanced ceramic. Mainly I'm looking for a translucent, refractive finish.

My guess at the moment is a basecoat of turquoise tint, wet blended with a purple tint and covered with multiple layers of metal medium to obscure and provide depth.

I also don't have an airbrush, but I think a brush technique can carry it off.
>>
>>49742742

Currently painting my second mini ever today. Major ideas are painted and cleanup will be done in the next day or so.

I wanted to have this one have more visual flare but not the same way my first does, so instead of using gold to accent the pauldrons and such I'm sticking with my bronze and filling in panels and stuff.

I've still got a few ideas in store for it but can I get some criticism? Mind you it's still early into being done but I'd love some more ideas.

I tried doing edge highlights but I couldn't get the consistency of my Maccrage Blue / Ceramite White mix correct so I only did it on a few sparse parts. After that I dry brushed with the same mix over the entire figure, more than I'd done with my first, and then laid on a pretty good amount of Drach Nightshade and then cleaned up with Macc Blue again.

This is so much fun, I'd gone to my local GW and the manager and everyone there was incredibly welcoming and showed me a bunch of techniques (how I learned to drybrush)

Taking a bit of advice from a friend of mine I'm thinking about going Black with grey relief, so it looks like of silverish on the details, with off white or ivory ruffles. and for the skin I'm thinking flayed one flesh, with a "blood" wash, then hitting it with flayed one flesh again to leave the red in the recesses.
For the girl I'm thinking a Red or Blue dress so that it contrasts with the darkness of the woods and Slendy. and I'm thinking about having a lantern to try and cast some light on the little girl hugging her teddy.

>What's the difference between the Imperial Knight Paladin and the Warden? Is the price worth it?

Hah! Looks like I happened by at the right time!

Take a look at this picture. There are three big sprues. Everything on these three big sprues comes with both the Paladin and Warden kits. With them *only*, and nothing else, you can build either the Paladin (battlecannon and chainsword) or the Errant (thermal "melta" cannon and chainsword).

If you buy the Warden kit, however, you get a third sprue full of extra gubbinz, including parts for the three different carapace-mounted weapons, the Thunderstrike Gauntlet, the Avenger Gatling Cannon, and the hull-mounted meltagun that you can buy instead of da 'eavy stubba. Think of the possibilities, anon! You could have a Paladin with an Icarus Autocannon, or a Crusader wiv two big shootas, or a Warden wiv a gatling shoota and power fist!

*Fourth* sprue. I swear I've had my coffee. Here's a close-up of the carapace-mounted launcher pod which can be configured either as a Stormspear Rocket Pod (launches d3 krak missiles) or an Ironstorm Missile Pod (very similar to Space Marine Whirlwind). The fourth sprue also has less useful (i.e., have no effect on da roolz) gubbinz like alternative face plates and some Adeptus Mechanicus badges.

Which paint brand would /tg/ recommend to someone returning to the hobby?

I remember GW's paints being very plastic-y. I used higher end craft paints watered down for the most part.

Nice work! Lots of control for the most part (the rust is a bit messy), but I like it! Very vibrant, and you did a great job on the wooden bits. I'd suggest you add some Nihilakh Oxide to the bell, but if you're keeping it vibrant that works too.

I live in germany, the only 'art supply' store in my entire hometown has little more than the stuff a kid would need for art class (considering the store is a school supplies store) and I have yet to find a proper art supply store in the city my closest GW/hobby store is at. Simply buying GW stuff has been my most viable option as of yet since I don't have the time to regularly go "to the big city" and search for a good store to buy paints and stuff from.

>>
>>49746525
I had planned on adding the oxide to the bell, the name had totally escaped me . The rust is a bit messy but honestly dry brushing for me is much more difficult than it should be, especially on those thin metal rails. Luckily though it's not as noticeable in person.

Thoughts /tg/ ?

Slaughter priest+grey Knight truescale (?) Conversion.

Originally was just a simple body swap conversion, but after getting feedback from /tg/ the original torso I was using looked too small/chubby wo I worked on making something better looking and ended up with this. Just focus on layers. Have the brightest colors of the flame be near the base and in the recesses, rather than the usual of having the recesses be dark. Just layer on green mixed with medium and work your way up to dark green/black.

I think ol' Duncan has a good warpflame tutorial folded into the Thanquol and Boneripper video.
