Hard mode : no magic or such tricks, you may have one sidearm.

True mode : hand to hand combat only.

I like it how in older MGS games many characters had these melodramatic and romantic traits. Like how Boss could never die by anyone else but Snake and how the infinity-shaped feeder in her gun provided her with infinite ammo.

Hideo Kojima writes in a narrative style largely referred to as 'magical realism', wherein intent and emotion have real and dramatic impacts on the world, and these effects are taken at face value by people in the world.

Ergo a gun with ammo contained inside an infinity symbol would, rationally, simply have infinite ammo.

The rounds have two casings arranged linearly. The fore casing is fired with the round while the rear casing is ejected back into the magazine, where it spontaneously grows its own bullet and rear casing section (as well as conjuring new propellant) before being fed back into the chamber. This allows the weapon to consume twice the propellant per shot and accelerate more mass (because the round includes the fore casing when striking the target).

I just made all of that up. Just let it happen, man.

Admittedly, the 'infinite ammo' bits in MGS2 and MGS3 could be viewed very easily as jokes (especially considering the straight man responses of Raiden and 'Sigint') but it's much more visible as an overarching style. COBRA unit exemplifies the ideal very literally, each member named after and inspiring a particular emotion or sensation in a magical realism loop.

Certain other characters are much less matter-of-fact about it, though, with characters such as Vulcan Raven having an otherwise inexplicable connection with ravens that is accepted as normal. Pretty much every conversation about guns or technology in the entire series boils down to magical realism, with the passion and obsession of individuals investing much greater power and emotion into things like manually ejecting a shell casing making that sentiment true.

It's a relatively common element of Japanese story telling that proooobably has its roots in the deeply animistic aspects of Shinto.
>>
>>49720395

You are misunderstanding. In Eva, there are simply psychic powers, and the power of emotion is largely unrecognized. Instrumentality is a ploy that no one who isn't in the know sees coming, and they respond with emotions ranging from shock to horror when it happens. The idea that there is a living (dead?) 'soul' inside of the Evas is both unknown and would not be recognized as a rational power source.

In Magical Realism, these 'fantastic' elements simply occur as the day-to-day result of powerful, passionate emotion or sensation, and are accepted as such by those within the setting.
>>
Why people have such a hard time coming with terms that MGS was not meant to be realistic? It has fucking cyborg ninjas and giant robots for fucks sake
>>
>>49720459

It's also worth noting that Shinto is not ACTUALLY animistic, this is just the term that most closely resembles the Shinto world view which is, in fact, best described as 'Shinto'.

The Shinto traditions do not hold that each object is imbued with a soul or spirit, but that all of creation, every last piece, is divine in nature, and that that divinity coexists with all other states and things. When one is inspired to awe or meditation by an object or place or whatever, it is believed that that particular thing is a bridge to or simply idealized representation of that divine nature. It is why, for example, nobody but nobody fucks with Mt. Fuji. It's one of the most awe inspiring places in Japan, and easily one of, if not the, most sacred.

Also ALSO, the vast majority of Japan identifies as participating in some way in Shinto beliefs and practices. If this doesn't go a long way towards helping to explain why melodrama and overly emotional responses to plot-important things is so prevalent in anime, I dunno what else to tell you.
>>
>>49720477

So old Super Robot shows like GaoGaiGar is a more accurate comparison. And Gurren Lagann then confronts and deconstructs this tradition in the Super Robot genre to a degree, particularly through the character of Rossiu who explicitly rejects the "magical thinking," the universe runs on in favor of cold science and logic and thus creates tragedy despite his intentions, and the character of Lordgenome who was driven into despair and villainy by a philosophical argument about the nature of his magical reality that he should have, by his very definition, been immune to.
>>
>>49720756

A much better representation, yes.
>>
>>49720478
Their legs are not okay
>>
>>49720756
>>49720761

There's a line in GaoGaiGar that exemplifies this pretty well: at some point, the ops guy says something like "He's a hero, he can transform ten percent... into a hundred percent!" or something along those lines, and this is accepted with dramatic realization, just like the tense fear of the hero's minuscule chance of success was.
>>
>>49720794

Martian Successor Nadesico plays with magical realism a lot as well, since its a "real robot," show with a super robot "show within a show," that has crazy dramatic import to the plot and characters.

>>
>>49720342
>the bullets didn't leave the gun straight, they flip and twist

This can probably be attributed to popular perception of reports about the rounds fired by early M-16's tumbling and creating a larger wound channel.

This may have been because of the nose being lighter and the tail end of the bullet being much heavier. On impact it tends to cause the bullet to flip over and go tail-first. (Or barring that fragment inside the body.)
This may have been worsened by the early rifles having too much barrel twist since the amount originally specified couldn't be machined properly at first.
>>

My character would get unequivocally shriek'd. And he's a combat focused force sensitive to boot.

The thing about The Boss is that she has the inherent trait of "better than you +5" and there's nothing you can do about it. Your first fight will be an easy win on her part, one which will leave you bruised and humiliated.

But the fight will also force you to grow and adapt, not just as a fighter, but as an indovidual as well. The loss of the fight will spurn a hero's journey of self discovery and attaining your full potential.

The only way to defeat The Boss is to rise to the occasion, to become greater than fate, to become greater than the person who you are or could ever be.

Only then can you defeat The Boss, only then could you become your own legend.

My current character would get absolutely destroyed by the Boss.
I had another character whose dad was pretty much a far more selfish fantasy Big Boss not Venom Snake, Big Boss, and the character had the disgustingly high point-buy cost equivalent of 44. He'd stand the best chance by far and would probably get better than 50% odds in true mode.

>>
>>49725250
Don't want no trable is check about 99% of the time.
Ladder factory, no. Stuck in a chair, ladder, or bench is more common. Say, 60% of the time.
Baby is usually a no.

Pretty much.

They're larger than life characters meant to tell larger than life stories, that only they can tell because the world they live in is one so much greater than our own.

For one reason or another, they're the 1%. Whether it's money, power, genetics, knowledge or sheer will, they play on a stage only they can reach, telling a story we can all understand because of how much greater than us it is, which in this, we can align with our own lives because of how it can encompass and remind us of the enormity of our own challenges that we must face in our lives, great or small.

It feels realistic

Honestly the non-realistic stuff is something I've always liked about MGS because it's usually tied to a particular character and isn't over the top enough to clash with the rest of the setting.

The only thing off the top of my head I can recall not liking is the next spinoff being about warp holes and zombies, though a friend said those are both in a way present in MGSV which makes it somewhat better since it doesn't seem like Konami pulling something out of their ass. Granted Kojima apparently isn't fond of the idea, though that could be how both are being used and not the zombies and warp holes in of themselves.

>>49728393

She shows up for a lot longer than five minutes.

She is also arguably one of the most important characters in the series considering that disciple was Big Boss and her philosophy had an impact on both him and led to the creation of the Patriots.

>>
>>49732306
My only issues about the warp hole/zombie thing is the implementation of the zombies and what else I've seen so far makes me think they're going to go ahead and just explain said warp holes.

It was just kind of there and I like it like that. Nobody could give half a shit about a literal miniature wormhole creating device because they're too busy fucking about with nuke mechs and bio weapons.
>>
>>49732306
The warp holes are in the game in a way the game itself doesn't bother explaining or acknowledging at all. You capture a weird animal in a side op and suddenly you replace your extraction balloons with fucking wormhole technology.

Wormholes also show up in the multiplayer portion where you go visit "other PFs" and fight with them. Whether they're meant to be other PFs in the same sense as the ones in Africa or whether the wormhole is meant to take you to a parallel dimension where an alternate Big Boss founded a slightly-different Diamond Dogs PF that you're now raiding to support your own Diamond Dogs PF (which is the only one that exists in your home reality) is unclear.

Parasite zombies are totally a thing in the story, though.

Maybe?
My guy is a space marine, does he get to wear his armor?
I figure with his armor on he can counter the Boss's judo tricks better than if he was fighting her naked. While he's certainly stronger and tougher than her, they're probably about matched for speed.
Her stealth abilities won't be of as much use thanks to his enhanced senses, but she's probably much, much more skilled than he is.
I figure in Armor, he wins but its a remarkably difficult fight for being matched with a "mere human", and probably fairly emotionally draining.
Naked, I'd probably give the fight to the Boss due to her crazy skills, but he's no slouch and they both end the battle badly injured.
Emotionally, he's similar to Snake in that he was a loyal warrior who's become embroiled in the seedy world of espionage and become increasingly disillusioned with the people he was supposed to serve and himself. He's driven by guilt over terrible things he's done in the past and a desire to be part of something worth being loyal to... but everyone he puts his faith in keeps asking him to do more and more grey-area shit.

Boss's philosophy is literally the underpinning of the entire series you mook. Everything stems back to her.

She saw the world from space and realized the futility of nations and wars and borders, and wanted a world without them. But she also realized that her dream would literally never come true, and became suicidal and overcome with despair.

Everyone realized her vision for the future, but failed to catch that it was impossible, so all of them, Major Zero, Big Boss, even Skullface and Ocelot and the goddamn Patriots all tried to bring it about in a different way. Even the fucking Senator from MGR was unconsciously following the Boss's meme. But it was all futile, just as it was in her time. Even negro arms dealer was still trying at the end. The only person to escape the cycle was Snake, and only because Big Boss fucking returned from the dead and told him to just give it up and live.

Not that guy but it seems unfair to mock someone for having a character that is nominally more powerful than the boss when there are settings that are much higher power than MGS. It's not even like he was smug about it, he said that it would result in a sweet fight and philosophical discussion.

Or is it that this is just a thread for masturbating furiously about how the boss would totally dominate your character, tie you up and call you a naughty boy?

First 3 are 100% worth playing
MGS4 is almost 1:1 with gameplay:cutscene content
Phantom Pain is the best video game in the series, but the worst Metal Gear
Peace Walker is bretty good
MGR:Revengeance is a Platinum Games spinoff, expect fucking amazing action and off-the-wall bossfights

On-topic, my last character was a Solar Exalt, specialized in War but not particularly skilled himself. He's all about leading armies and amazing tactics and whatnot, but he's only a bit better than an excellent human when it comes to swordplay.

What I'm saying is that in a 1 on 1 with The Boss it's RIP Solar.
>>
I still don't really quite get the magical realismo definition in this case. I heard it before, but it just didn't click.

I mean, all the bullshit people pull in the games they try to Science away, but so is it valid or not? Is it not sci fi?
>>
True Mode honestly sounds like her happy place.

Karin Yildiz, Malifaux Augmented/Engineer. She's honestly more machine than woman at this point, with only parts of her torso and face actually fleshy. Even with the boss' excellent unarmed skills she'd likely have a hard time laying a hit on Karin that she couldn't shrug off.

Armour 4 + Metal On Metal is one hell of a drug.

Normal/Hard is honestly a lot worse for her as Karin isn't particularly good at observation/finding sneaky people so narrowing it down to unarmed combat only is seriously an upside to her.

She'd likely lose Hard mode by a lot and have a good chance in True Mode.
>>
>>49719342
>Awakened medium-sized Stone Golem who wanders around hiding his form with a scarf of Disguise Self, trying to find a place where to belong since being a fighter is the only thing he has ever known

Fuck, he may be a piece of granite made for fighting, capable of piercing a steel platemail with a fist, but I don't think he'd ever try to lay an hand on her, supposing he knew some trivia about her legend. He'd be feeling too much of a mixture of fear and respect.
>>
A reminder that not even the players of MGS actually beat the boss.

She wasn't trying to win.
>>
>>49720395
No, but Devadasy would. It's basically Evangelion with all the christain references swapped with the kama sutra and the tantric arts. Their robots are literally powered by orgasms and teen horniness.
>>
>>49735600
Ehhh, I wouldn't say that.

The Boss is handsome.
>>
>>49736127
Also, don't forget MGR basically has the best story of the series.
>>
>>49737021
You best be taking the piss.
>>
>>49735586
I disagree. It's not that the dream is impossible, it's that everyone warps the idea into what they want it to be, whether for personal gain, or simply filtering it through their own perceptions.
>>
>>49737047
I'm honestly not. It's the best written, which isn't saying much, because MGS sets the bar pretty low. I love the series to death, but while the stories are fun, they're usually rather dumb (And I don't mean the magical realism stuff that's being talked about here)
>>
>>49737059
Are you implying that MGR isn't dumb?
>>
>>49737067
It is dumb, but it's less dumb, and much more well-constructed. The way the character's ideals clash through their fights, and how it all reflects on Raiden and how he changes throughout the story, coming to terms with his nature, is very well done, and a lot more elegant than anything else in Metal Gear.

But maybe I was just tricked by how PUMPED I was throughout the entire game, that excitement bled over into excitement for the story.
>>
>>49734790
>Yes, in both modes.
I don't even have to know your character, but I know you'd get trounced before you could even blink. But it's okay, it's the first step towards becoming More Than You Could Ever Be

The Boss isn't a villain, she's the TRUEST Patriot this country has ever seen
>>

>Though she's a super villain so it's not really a good comparison.
I think the other anon is refering to his PC being a super villain.
>>
>>49737081
>and a lot more elegant than anything else in Metal Gear
I disagree. Solid Snake's arch was very elegant in MG-MGS4, as was Raiden's up until MGR.

>But maybe I was just tricked by how PUMPED I was throughout the entire game, that excitement bled over into excitement for the story
That was probably it honestly. I loved Sundowner because he was FUCKING INVINCIBLE, it took me a little while to realize that he doesn't have much else going for him.
>>
>>49737231
*Solid Snake's arc
>>
>>49737231
Well, I did think Sundowner was super flat from the start. In fact, he really didn't fit in with the other Winds of Destruction at all, since he didn't care one bit about Armstrong's ideals.
>>
>>49737260

>>
>>49737325

>>
>>49737335
Looking at the Metal Gear wiki, he apparently wasn't.
>>
>>49719342
Most current character is a crafting focused Twilight Caste Solar. My poor boy would probable be dumpstered.
>>
>>49736439
They don't try to science much of it away at all.

Volgin can punch holes through solid metal. Why? Biolightning mutant! Raiden can take on dozens of elite operatives with no arms. Why? Cyborg ninja! Psycho Mantis can hurl shit around with his thoughts. Why? Psychic! The Sorrow can conjure ghosts. Why? Spiritual medium!

None of these are actual explanations, if you'll notice. They're just there, they're taken completely at face value with characters rarely if ever being more than mildly surprised (And usually for reasons other than HOLY SHIT THAT'S SUPERNATURAL), and the setting loses no consistency for their presence. The magical realism aspect basically means that the more fantastical elements are A) fairly low key and B) Not treated as overly spectacular by any character who observes them.
>>

He basically was, just not officially. His codename was Minuano.

/tg/, I've been meaning to run a one-off MG-inspired game for a long time. It's about five(or how many players I'll have) people working for different secret agencies who's missions led them into a same car of a very suspicious train. One else is on the train and no one knows where it's going. The people don't know each other per se but each of them had their life seriously influenced by one person - a Boss-style character. They might also have old scores to settle with other agents, something to do with shady MG-style operations they may have participated in on different sides.

Each character knows some stuff about the setting and the geopolitical situation the other don't and also has access to some weird sci-fi spy shit. I wanted one to be more of a usual cold era spy with a MKUltra twist, possessing and being addicted to strange designer drugs. The second dude is a WWII soldier who went through a prototype full-body cybernetisation after a failed operation. He's have cool integrated spy gadgets and what not. The third agent would have half of his brain replaced by a computer and have appropriate powers. The forth guy has gone through an experimental brain surgery and abuses his new multiple personality syndrome for fun and profit. The fifth one would have to deal with being a clone or NANOMACHINES or both, I'm not sure yet.

They are probably being transpored to a site that houses a seed AI starting a hard take-off where they'll have to ability to decide what the AI would be like and what it should do with the humans.

Anyone has any ideas for inspiration? May be a book or a movie?

>>
>>49719342

Yeah winning with something like an epic DnD wizard is possible though it will take some time and you'll need to be even more paranoid than usual.

I played a character who could probably take her in a straight hand to hand fight but only because his whole shtick was surviving any beating and pushing forward. And he had enough skill to block crippling and killing strikes. Though still sucked vs magic. It's hard to be a 'not monk' in a DnD world.
>>
>>49748507

>>
>>49738633
>Not treated as overly spectacular by any character that observes them.

Absolutely true. With the exception of Raiden in the first half of MGS2 where he serves as a sort of surrogate for the player, providing a fresh, sane eye for all the fantastic happenings and madness that characters in MGS find mundane.
>>
>>49747637

You do understand that the actual meaning of the word "meme" is a viral idea or piece of information and not an internet in-joke?
>>
>>49750540
Well Raiden's a VR soldier, he's not used to the absolute insanity of special ops at that point. I think his use as being able to look at Snake from the outside was used well.

>>49750634
Not to mention that Meme was the main theme of MGS2 and Kojima's been using the concept seriously in his works since then?
>>
>>49720875
For myself everything up to Snake Eater is 'old' MGS, and Subsistence and later is 'new'.

>>49728129
I wasn't aware that 'melodramatic' has such a negative connotation, I just meant like, big emotions. I absolutely adore Kojima's style of storytelling.
>>
>>49747108
I would fucking KILL for an MGS about Boss when she was younger. Not too much younger, WWII is played out, but what about her in Korea? Korean War era Boss (mid 30s) sneaking around slitting Commie throats in China.

It'd be the first good game ever set in the Korean War, and you'd get to play the best girl of all years.

Plus the Japanese fucking hate Koreans, so they wouldn't pull any punches.

Well... he has the suit, man. It's based on the same tech as Solidus' muscle suit and later Solid Snake's (though that was more nuanced and designed to make his physical age less of a disadvantage).

Actually, one thing I like about this series is that you can kind of see where each wild and wacky piece of kit came from, all the way back to the beginning. Design elements repeat themselves, if only subtly.

>>
>>49759731
Take the comparison in reference, the thing is that in the metal gear universe she is the pinnical, she's at the top of the food chain and no one will ever be able to take that spot. Your character is just another level 17 character with many more people at that level and exceeding it.
>>
>>49757061

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Kojima had the core concepts for MGS3 in mind while working on 2.

MG and MG2 are probably different and off the top of my head MGS1 was more about genes and nuclear weapons.

Still that doesn't change the fact that lorewise the Boss's philosophy is the reason why the events covered in most, if not all of the Metal Gear games, occur.

>>49759731

>Your point is? Snake beat her as a nobody-shlub

Regardless of whether he actually beat her or she lost on purpose, Naked Snake wasn't a nobody. He had already been her disciple for years and his training was seemingly over.
