Will you do me a favor, piano man, please?
I want you to write me a song.
They say I'm the hero of Antelope's Run
And I've got to show them they're wrong.

You see, it all started a week ago
In the bar down on Corridor 3;
There was nobody there but us regular bums,
Two losers, the barman, and me.

Prefer Dawson's Christian myself

The only song I like less on that album is Bomber.

Everyone seems to like that song, but I can never tell why.
What do you find appealing about it?
>>
>>49692639
Not that anon, but I think I like the authenticity it has. It's not perfect by any means, but to me it just really sounds like a ghost story old starship sailors would tell. It doesn't sound perfect and it's not great, but it doesn't have to, and I think because it doesn't sound perfect it gives it a genuine feel.
>>
>>49692639
Great rythm, probably most "authentic" sounding of the songs, pretty strongest melody of them all.

My personal favorite filk songs though:

One of my favorites, although it might be a bit "cheating" because it's just a Kipling poem set to music. It's a nice poem, though.

Another one of my personal favorites is Hope Eyrie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXteSV8rBwY

God, that song is awful in comparison to the rest of the album.

Why doesn't tg ever make filk? I know for a fact there's a shitton of talented people, and recording a song doesn't take that much time or effort. Seems like it'd be fun
>>
>>49695480
Well, /tg/ did write one filk song (plus we've adapted some existing songs to another setting, usually 40k, which is also a time-honored filk tradition), but as far as I've known, nobody's really set them to music and recorded them.
>>
>>49695599
Respectable digits

I don't understand why not. Tg has something close to a reputation for getting shit done.

That anon here.

Both Dawson's Christian and Some Kind of Hero are both very... human to me. They both present a very human and relatable perspective. The unwilling hero and that of a man faced with the supernatural or unexplainable. They're nicely told stories.

And yeah, Hymn to Breaking Strain, which someone posted above, is better than both in a lot of ways
>>
>>49692965
>because it's just a Kipling poem set to music
There sure are a lot of those.

Leslie Fish in particular has done a lot of filk based on Kipling's poetry. "Kiplish" is pretty much its own subgenre of filk.
>>
>>49698206
She also breeds cats and says that they are as smart as 6 year olds.
>>
>>49698317
In all fairness, 6 year olds are pretty stupid and I've know cats that could open doors.
Still a pretty extreme claim, but only slightly outlandish.
>>
>>49698348
How many 6 year olds do you know that can't open doors?
>>
>>49698317
Leslie's done a lot of things. She's run for a local politician, campaigned for better rights for sex workers, breeds cats, writes, plays and sings filk, and is an unabashed anarchist.

She's probably a bit crazy, but one of the best filkers out there.
>>
>>49698372
More of a prerequisite of having thumbs (or the right kind of handles). Cats know they want to go somewhere and something's in the way.
>>
>>49698348

We had a trio of cats who learned to knock on the door by pulling the screen door back and letting it go. One taught the others.
My sister also once had a cat who appeared to understand the doorknob principle, poor guy just couldn't seem to make it work. It was funny watching him slap at the knob and try to lean on it to push it and stuff, then sit back and stare at it, then try again.

Guardians is another favorite of mine, second only to Dawson's Christian. There's something touching about all those who came before acting on our behalf. A spiritual ancestor to >>49695788.

Oh, for fuck's sake. Guardians, Some Kind of Hero and Dawson's Christian are all great, but they don't even come close to Sam Jones.

I liked Carmen Miranda's Ghost a bit more than Sam Jones, but I also play a bit to much SS13.
Those are my two favorite tracks on the album though.

Shame the Finity's End recordings have worse sound quality.

The Sam Jones track on there is sung better.

It started in a tavern on the edge of Macke Town.
The talk had turned to stories of the night.
He drank and laughed with all the rest and chilled them with his tales,
Spoken in the shadowed eerie light.

When all at once they noticed signs they had not seen before.
No candles burned inside the tavern hall,
The windows shuttered tightly and no light spread from the doors.
The blacksmith's son glowed pale to light them all.
>>
>>49695788
one of these years, some anon(s?) will have to sing this, right?
>>
>>49704122
You think they already would've, considering how often other boards do that shit. Hell, /a/ even has orchestr/a/ going pretty frequently
>>
>>49691331
I read the book (series of short stories set on Space Station 3) when I was a kid and I always loved it. I can't believe it took me as long as it did to find SS13 after it came out.

I have the fondest memories of those threads, and I feel more than a little pride that the filk I helped write is still remembered around here. It would be a great thing indeed to hear it sung, someday.

For anyone who might be curious, it was originally set to the tune of "The Rising of the Moon," but it works equally well with "The Sick Note."

Hymn to Breaking Strain is a Kipling poem, so yeah, it's been written by a world-class poet instead of an enthusiastic amateur, of course it's way better.
