> Small village is constantly harassed and raided by a band composed of disenfranchised ex-soldiers, power hungry magicians, over-zealous and cruelly callous clerics and paladins, and physchotic murderhobos. At loss for options, the Dragon mayor convinces the village to pool what little money it has to hire the famous Kobold mercenary band, the Red Klaws, to protect them.

Before anyone assumes the dragon is fucking rats, just put away those ridiculous notions because they're absurd.

The rats are getting impregnated by the dragon seed that dribbles out after he fucks the horses.

I've got something like this going on in my setting.

Sometimes a dragon will decide to claim a village or town as part of its hoard, and usually demand an offering of livestock every so often. Mostly it's because humanoids are better at breeding prey animals, and the dragon is somewhat lazy about hunting mere snacks. Otherwise they don't interfere much in the town's day to day operations besides declaring ownership of the local currency, even though they don't actually gather it all up in a pile.

This mostly works out in everyone's favor because monsters, big animals, and other humanoids absolutely will not fuck with that town, while the dragon gets to expand its territory/hoard and have access to easy meals.

Things do get complicated when the dragons start playing politics, but that's rare enough to not be a real concern. There are always Half-Dragons. Always.

>*Squints at map* Not really. I mean, the mountain ranges and everything match, the rivers are where they're supposed to be... But this map says there isn't supposed to be a village here. Just hilly woodland.

>Okay, okay, look, lets just calm down. We might be lost, but hey, it's an adventure isn't it? That's what we wanted when we decided to go backpacking through here. Maybe it's one of those "only-appears-every-thousand-years!" magical villages.
>Ted, it's the 21st century. That's retarded

Sounds like it would be comfy as fuck. Things funded from hoard, whole cows roasted for nommins (think backyard bbq every night), likely that none of the jobs you could be hired for are dangerous (mayor is a fucking dragon, it would just fucking murder anything hurtful around town), probably real protective of town + people like they are an extension of its hoard, probably a secret dragon so people don't come from across the country to spoil the quiet backcountry mood (never meet the mayor face-to-face until the end of the quest)... It just goes on and on. Too good. Like a subplot with a dragon hunter on the prowl, or excessive tax evasion getting the mayor in trouble, or even just figuring out what the mayor actually is...

Also a hot bitch for kinky firebreathing sex. Can't forget that.

Unfortunately I probably can't reassure him/her that much. A lot of D&D parties will immediately attempt to slay any and all dragons in the area, regardless of how nice they're being, just to get loot. And the Kobolds... frankly, they don't stand a chance unless their dragon friend is in the immediate vicinity. If the dragon is even a few rooms away the most they will be able to get is revenge.

It's my headcanon that Lofwyr, in spite of his eons-honed talent for micromanagement, knows full well that a corporation with a headcount and economic turnover matching that of first-world countries can't be run by one brain. This further implies that he has a group of people that he trusts with an ENORMOUS amount of power; the power to make decisions in his authority. Because you can't personally inspect and greenlight everything Saeder-Krupp does; it's just too big, you'd be 'yes/no'-ing continuously 24/7 and STILL not empty your 'in' box.

Furthermore, to do this job WELL, these people have to know the Boss. They have to know how he thinks, how he'd approve or disapprove of a given motion or measure. They have to know him personally. Be trusted. Loyal, of course. But trusted by the dragon king more than possibly any other living beings in the world.

What kind of person earns the trust of a Great Dragon? What does it take to pull that off? And what kind of interactions would they have with him?

Something I ran in my last campaign.

>Players find a distant village built into the skeleton of an enormous dragon
>The villagers preparing for some annual event, but they#re pretty downcast.
>This culminates in the villagers tying a stripped ten-year-old girl to the forehead of the fallen dragon
>PCs look on in horror as a dragon nearly as big flies in, scoops up the terrified girl and flies away
>They pursue it to a distant tower, where presumably it will eat the girl

>They're just in time to see the dragon safely drop off the girl with a bunch of women they realise must be the "sacrifice victims" from previous years, who immediately clothe and comfort her
>Talking to these women reveals that the dragon lives in the tower, made up a story about being the child of the dragon that the villagers live in the skeleton of, used it to demand an annual sacrifice
>In actuality they're fine; they've been claimed so that the dragon can have a workforce to tend food farms. Women because of the old stories, and harder workers. They've made an even more comfortable home for themselves here, and plan to integrate the village once the old sticklers die off, though the villagers don't know about the "victims'" true fates yet
>Hell, they even speak to the dragon, who at this point has his newest minion perching on his nose, holding a book up for him, turning the pages and adjusting his glasses
>The only problem they have in the short term is that they're low on clothing, which primarily has to go to their eldest and youngest, and is spread thin elsewhere. They're shearing sheep to counteract it, but their supply is limited
>This entire encounter ends with the players being sent back to shout at the pervy old mayor who made up the "sacrifices must be naked" rule ages ago for his own amusement, so that next year's girl will come with some damn clothes

It was a rollercoaster, but they enjoyed it. Especially beating up the perverted mayor.

Reminds me of a quick idea I saw on tumblr where the woman-snatching dragon is the standard type when told among the men (swoops in, steals women screaming away from their cozy lives to be eaten or worse), but the dragon is cast as a savior among the women (a raped or abused wife wanders out one night, reaches toward the sky, and is carried away to a place of safety). From there it pretty much just turned into a "beautiful utopia full of strong independent womyn because having a populace of emotionally and physically abused people obviously makes for a functional, stable population" because tumblr's gonna tumb, but it was an interesting idea until then.
If you wanted to go darker, you could have the true story be a combination - the dragon snatches up women who offer themselves to it, granting them "freedom" in their deaths.

My port city has a Bronze Dragon that protects the city.

She also takes on the form of an old Halfling woman who runs an Inn/Adventuring supplies store, secretly, My players love her, consider her the group grandma, but don't know she's the dragon yet.

There's either going to be a uprising of undead from the local graveyard or a greenskin raid on the city, depending on what quests my players ignore/forget about. Probably both, really.
When the time arises she'll defend the city once more, my players will probably shit bricks

What if the dragon considers the overall economic well-being of a country to be its "horde", and measures its value in terms of GDP of said country?

It might still have a pile of gold laying around somewhere if they're using a gold-backed currency (which a smart dragon wouldn't because it would make monetary policy unnecessarily difficult for little benefit), but that doesn't necessarily make it a horde. Maybe the dragon gets a reasonable stipend for living expenses and nothing else.
>>
>>49753990
>What if the dragon considers the overall economic well-being of a country to be its "horde", and measures its value in terms of GDP of said country?
Then he's retarded for equating overall economic well-being with GDP. I thought dragons were supposed to be smart?
>>
>>49754047
GDP is an alright measure of overall economic well-being. Ceterus parabis, a higher GDP means a healthier economy.

Now, a slightly more intelligent dragon would probably higher a team of statistician to measure the overall well-being of his country, taking into account GDP, life expectancy, social mobility, art and music production, and a variety of other factors, but perhaps this dragon doesn't have the time or the money to do so.
>>
>>49754102
>GDP is an alright measure of overall economic well-being.
Two guys handing a dollar bill back and forth between them increases GDP.
>>
>>49754158
No, it doesn't. GDP is the measure of the value of all goods and services produced by a country.

If person A pays person B to do a service, and then person B pays person A to do a service, this does increase GDP. But two services have been performed, which is productive.

Not the anon your arguing with, but:
- The concept of sercvie has always included bank services, which is fine in itself.

Can you elaborate on what "more creative financial products" means?
>>

Too much/hard to enumerate, sincec the financers/bankers themselves lost track of everything, which eventually led to the collapse/current depression (one of several causes)
>>
>>49755188
The 2008 recession was almost entirely caused by a liquidity crisis which was spurred on by sub-prime loans. These sub-prime loans were rated too highly due to mistakes in ratings firms.

It's not because people lost track of money, they just over-valued assets which turned out to be almost entirely worthless.

I've been in two separate groups where, if this happened, it'd be because someone got a powerful magical artifact to mind-control every dragon and we'd have to stop them before their intentions turned nefarious. At least one of the GMs would then have it so that we'd then have to kill all the dragons who were now very close to humans and immediately reverted to their "kill everything in sight" mode.
The last time someone posted that image, the discussion quickly became about being eaten by a dragon while playing video games. Artist is vorelord.

I wonder how it started. I doubt most buildings and crops are built for even a nonacidic stomach, let alone the lack of sunlight, so it couldn't've just eaten a preexisting village.
How would one go about terraforming a surprisingly spacious stomach-like organ to support a small village and their crops? What do they do about their relatively limited space? Would children born there ever wonder of life outside the fleshy walls of their world? Does the dragon talk with the village somehow?
...why am I finding a fetish prompt so interesting?

Because it sounds neat. You can have stuff inside whales or have tiny civilisations with shrink ray adventures.
Just ignore the fetish and youve got a damn fine world building hook.

>Bioluminescence?
Like those weird fursonas with the glowy blue insides, yeah? It'd actually have a use here, then. The lack of a day/night schedule would probably wreak havoc for the plants, though, and definitely would for the animal population (incl. humans).
So in addition to the dragon having to eat a bunch of dirt, the dragon would probably have to eat some sort of aperture dome that the villagers could open and close on a schedule. And hopefully its glow would be bright enough for food-producing crops to actually live if not thrive in its light. Although, if the dragon can glow on and off whenever it likes, this is a non-issue entirely. And now I'm thinking of a tiny dragon opening its mouth to read by its own light late at night.
Water would be another issue - unless we go to absolutely ridiculous dimensions surrounding this village, I don't think clouds would work well. Maybe the stomach itself could function as a sort of reservoir, with some well-type thing being able to be (carefully) dug to near the "end" of the underground. Apparently, warm water isn't inherently bad for plants (and can actually be good), so cooling isn't an issue aside from human comfort.
Not sure what to do as far as nutrients for the plants (since they need more than sun and water to grow). The most obvious temporary solution would be fecal matter for fertilizer, but I'd think that would have diminishing returns and lead to failure after a while. Obviously the dragon could keep swallowing things for the village, but it seems like something on that scale ought to be unnecessary.

I can't think of any way to put this in a game, but it's pretty fun and I can always let it rot away somewhere in my "settings" scrap folder.

I like the idea that the village isn't quite self-sufficient.
The dragon didn't want them initially, it just didn't care enough to deal with them at first because they weren't really causing any problems, and eventually it came to like its little village in a bottle and respect their tenacity, so now it goes and eats useful things once in a while to keep them going. A couple plowshares this month, some quality timber the next. Maybe the villagers start having some health issues so it goes and eats a doctor.

GDP per capita.
>>
>>49759682
Explained why not in the links.
>>

Directly from your link:

>In academic articles and presentations, GDP per capita is discussed far more often than GDP. That ought to alleviate some of your worry. See e.g. here, slide 7.

(I happen to know that poster actually, he/she really knows their shit)
>>
>>49759711

Directly from that same link

GDP per capita might more accurately measure the state of the economy in some situations, but measuring overall GDP makes it much easier to compare economic power on a global scale -- if you and two other people start a super-advanced software consulting company on a private island, for example, the GDP per capita of that island could easily be 6 times that of the US ($53k), with spectacular metrics for worker productivity and wealth distribution and whatever else you might include.
But on an international scale, it wouldn't mean anything, because the GDP of your island is $318,000 and the GDP of the US is $16,000,000,000,000. Your island could sink into the ocean and the global economy wouldn't even burp.
>>
>>49759767
>>49759711

The dragon is interested in the SIZE of his hoard, whether or not it's in relation to other hoards remains to be seen. GDP, thus, provides him with the information he needs. GDP-P-C does not.
>>
>>49759806
Okay, actually, you're right. GDP is most definitely the best measure in that case.
>>
Pic unrelated.

>>49759659
That's a cool idea, actually, although I think it'd have to be a little more accepting of them past "didn't want them," otherwise the town would've died horrible acidic death shortly after being eaten.
Maybe it comes from an attempt to save themselves from death - the town knew the dragon was hunting near them, heard it was very effective in taking down its prey. Rather than risk losing able-bodied workers trying to kill or dissuade it, they strike up a deal: some preparation time and eating what they ask of it when the time comes, and they wager that they can survive in its gut. They'd let themselves be eaten without attempt to struggle or hide, and in return, the dragon would only digest them if they die.
The dragon agrees, thinking it just scored the population of an entire town to snack on, no hiding, no hassle, at the cost of waiting a week, maybe a month (and if it works like I've seen hammerspace dragons explained in other threads, it can keep eating normally, keeping its "bonus" set aside). At first, it's annoyed that the village is still around and doing surprisingly well (maybe it can watch through a scrying portal or some other communication), rationing the stockpiled materials to extend their lifetimes, but over time, he likes seeing how "his town" is getting along, and y'know, it'd be a shame to let them die just because they couldn't access materials outside their town; the dragon had sort of hoped that the town's extinction would be by riot or poor resource management, surely giving them a few trees from this forest won't hurt.
Plus, having "if you kill me, an entire village dies by your hand" as a bargaining chip is nice, especially for a very, very small dragon.
Maybe the town would develop a custom of placing dead bodies against the stomach walls rather than burying them in the ground, in part a reminder of the terms of their agreement, and eventually, in part as an offering for luck or a blessing as one would a deity.

It's Wakfu. It's French, and it's a really neat show. First season on YT is https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPmLb5LTfTLFoPS5ttWCXoMzgnRS8u_Bi
There's also an MMORPG of the same name, which is a sequel to Dofus (I've only played Wakfu). It has a really, really neat almost tabletop-gridlike combat where you can spend movement and action points each turn to move and attack, getting extra damage by attacking from the back and sides. There are 4 (5 technically) elements, with each class-race using 3 of them, and overall it's pretty fun, with the exception of the usual "do X a million times" style of quests and skill leveling.
I had a Sram (stealth/assassin, specializes in backstabs and traps) when I last played, so each turn I would usually spam "teleprots behind u".
Much more fun with a friend, of course.

I'm not sure that would really work. It's super mecha combat.
You'd probably have to look at aerial dogfight simulators for a dragon game. ZoE's quick dash, slash-and-shot combat would likely clash for a winged creature. Maybe eastern dragons though. That could be pretty cool, mix in some mysticism and mystery and you could be on to a winner.

You can always do something with a strategy game of course.

a similar situation is unfolding in my 5e game

our GM threw a bunch of young black dragons at us, and after killing them we found some wounded red dragons in the forest who had been fighting with them

our cleric healed the wounded red dragon while the mage spoke to him in Draconic and told him we would help them out

In the prior session we had started a small fort/village, collecting tax and and farmers from surrounded villages. In return, we act as a militia and trading outpost.

We're thinking of inviting the two young Red Dragons (they said they were without a home) to live in our village. What could go wrong? They are apparently quite nice/kind for red dragons.
>>
>>49779587
Sure, just up the tax to include everyone's firstborn.
>>
>>49779596
Is it literally impossible for a Red dragon to be some kind of good or neutral alignment? These are young (and perhaps impressionable) dragons
>>
>>49779630
It's like bringing a wild tiger into your house. It might not be evil but it's still a tiger.
>>
>>49779630
Depends on how the DM interprets alignments. The species is Chaotic Evil, whether that means that every individual dragon is guaranteed chaotic evil is up to him.

>>49779764
The difference is that a dragon is intelligent enough to potentially learn to act against its instincts. Generally, the smarter an animal is, the more nurture and the less nature defines their being.
Of course, dragons are magical imaginary beasts, so there's no right answer.
>>
>>49779630
Dragons are smarter then people. Dragons alignment doesn't always have to reflect it's traditional alignment due to scale color. People will be against having a red dragon at frist but it proving it self or proving the townfolk right is a grand ole idea.
