Tricking the devil is quite a popular theme in folklore. I think that deal should sound like something you could hear in a folk tale i.e.:

Showing an instance where the devil twists the intent of the deal by adhering to it's letter doesn't mean the devil isn't just as likely to creatively interpret it if that serves him better.
