Affinity, BW Tokens, 8whack, Mono-green Stompy, UR Storm

>Building?
I'm giving UW spirits a go. Seems like the Faeries deck I always wanted to be good but never was. Also bought a playset of Allosaurus Rider and Eldritch Evolution. I might just try building that.

>Next purchase?
Probably a Snapcaster and two Moorland Haunts to finish the UW Spirits deck.
>>
Is milling a viable strategy?
>>
>>49659899

Not really, no. The only time where mill is relatively viable as a wincon is really in limited because you have 20 less cards to mill and games go longer than in constructed anyways so that means more draws for them
>>
>>49659963
>tfw round 1 of modern FNM you're against a new player on mono U mill
>you're playing dredge
>>
Looter scooter is too good.
>>
>>49659454
Tell me about your stompy deck, anon. Im building one, but dont really know which shell to stick with.
>>
>>49660051
There was someone new at our store for our modern league yesterday. Game one he is on the play. He casts raven's crime targeting me, I discarded a gravetroll.
>Turn 1 draw dredge 6
>>
>>49659899
There's combos which mill is used to remove the entire enemy's library in one go like legacy painter's servant, and that stratergy in general is fine. The new saheeli combo deck isn't looking too awful if that's what you want to do in modern. Playing a whole bunch of 'mill X' cards is an awful strategy though.
>>
>>49659963
>>49660273
Thanks. I wanted to play u/r mill and maybe splash black. I just wanted sphinxs tutelage to be usable, honestly. Oh well
>>
>>49660702
Not only that, but what if the main deck OG Emrakul like I do in Tron?
>>
>>49660840
thats actually a good point, more decks run emmy in modern than legacy so mill is even worse here

If you're playing mill, think about their deck as their life instead. Something like hedron crab really only does 1 damage in that sense, and glimpse the unthinkable does less than a Boros Charm. It's just not terribly viable, especially with all the emmy/titan stuff running around
>>
>>49660209
is there more than one different shell? this is my list:

4x Militant Dryad
4x Experiment One
4x Strangleroot Geist
4x Kalonian Tusker
3x Scavenging Ooze
3x Avatar of the Resolute
4x Leatherback Baloth
4x Vines of Vastwood
4x Rancor
4x Aspect of the Hydra

2x Treetop Village
20x Forest

sideboard usually changes but cards usually in it are Dungrove Elder, Thrun the Last Troll, against control and Jund, Creeping Corrosion against artifact based decks, Beast Within for Tron, Feed the Clans for aggro.

the deck does way better than people give it credit for. Aspect of the Hydra is your best card as it steals games out of nowhere. its the equivalent of Cranial Plating or Ravager but obviously more fragile.
>>
>>49660259
>opponent on 8rack
>turn 1 Raven's crime
>bin Grisseldaddy

Bonus points for turn 1 Loxodon

On an alternate note, I won a game as 8rack with raven's crime and a fist full of lands.

Why don't you just exile their graveyard to prevent recursion (flashback, dredge, undying, persist etc)?

Also if you play Phenax http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=378524

All your creatures gain Mill X where X is the creature's toughness.
Time for Wall of Frost and other high toughness creatures.
>>
Modern Izzet burn/draw deck based around Guttersnipe.

yes/no/maybe
>>
>>49663457
Basically this. Pro tour wannabe faggots taking 15 minutes to "think" about their top activation when it's three lands on top and they're dead on board playing for the draw
>>

8Seas Merfolk, going to probably transition to 4Seas for upped creature count. I think the loss in speed isn't worth the land control function.

Is there really no better one-drop to play in Dredge than "Insolent Neonate"? It seems like you are minusing way too hard to do the job of Putrid Imp or Tireless Tribe.
>>
>>49666049
It's not like dredge was doing much on turn 1 even in legacy unless it had LED anyway. I've even seen neonate in some legacy lists, it's a fine card and it works great in the deck

Maybe Thopter Sword pieces.
>>
>>49663290
Counterbalance would run wild all over the meta. No more suicidezoo, infect, burn, etc. Players would be pissed.

>Counterbalance would run wild all over the meta
Just like Thopter Foundry. Just like Grave Troll. Just like Faeries. Just like Visions.
>>
>>49668789
Can you explain how counterbalance is relevantly similar to the cards you listed?
>>
I don't play Magic for years. How I get good with Zombies or Rats?
>>
>>49668909
It's overrated as fuck. Even if you go T1 Top, T2 Counterbalance, you're blind flipping your opponent's next turn. And even then, it does nothing to deal with your opponent's already resolved boardstate.
>>
>>49668521
>counterbalance
>with no brainstorm

>>
Dropped Abzan for Dredge, loving it. Placed 3rd at my first event with it, opponents saw their gy hate every g2 at least and I still won through it. Conflagrate is exceptional and one of the reasons to play the deck, honestly. It was reach when I needed it to be, and Damnation when I needed it to be. Highlight was flashing back for 2-1-1-1 damage against a skyspawner, its token, a noble hierarch and a matter reshaper against Bant Eldrazi
>>

What's your board look like?
>>
>>49669078
3x Ancient Grudge, 2x Abrupt Decay, 2x Collective Brutality, 2x Spellskite, 2x Gnaw to the Bone, 1x Engineered Explosives, 1x Lightning Axe, 2x Memory's Journey

Grudge, Journey, Brutality and EE overperformed

I didn't play against any RIP decks but it's possible I should have sided Decay in against decays I suspected Grafdigger's cage coming in

Spellskite would have been good v. Infect but I didn't find it

I did Gnaw to the Bone v. affinity and between it and Grudge, our post board games are amazing if they don't have Cage

I didn't play against Melira, Griselbrand, or other dredge decks so I didn't end up needing the Journeys. I still think they're BIS for interacting with other graveyard decks without giving up a bunch of slots for Leylines
>>
>>49669078
After T1 there's a land in play, maybe a Neonate.
>>
>>49669057
I love this new meme where every deck is dredge
>>

>didn't play against Melira, Griselbrand, or other dredge decks so I didn't end up needing the Journeys

Unless you're slinging K-Grips, I'm not really worried.
>>
>>49669520
Yeah no other decks stomp all over Miracles. It only looks like tier 0 because Merkans refuse to 1) learn how to play against it, or 2) sideboard against it. So many cards shit on Miracles. The deck literally cannot beat Eldrazi or Dredge pre-board.

I'm serious about Azusa Amulet, it still feels really strong. A turn 3 Prime Titan that doesn't die at the end of the turn and that can hit for 8 the turn it comes down, while having viglance, and can get vigilance and double strike the next turn, is nothing to scoff at and a lot of decks just can't handle that

So is Nahiri still a deck?

They can handle it just fine.

>>
>tfw khans fetches are cheaper now than when i bought them
>tfw i somehow made money buy selling them at 20 a piece
>>
>>49671844
You can, but then you have to mill them out again. Thats like 100 cards to mill. Unless its combo, it's unviable anon
>>
>>49674037
Good. Now enemy fetches need to be reprinted. No reasons fetches should be near as expensive as they are.
>>
>>49674179
Yup, 100% agree
I wish they actually printed monocolor fetches, I feel like they could do that at uncommon in a set where duals don't exist so they aren't as powerful, and it would keep the price down
>>
>>49674037

Why would the fetches be cheaper NOW?
>>
>>49674423
They rotated out of standard? Khans is supposedly one of the most opened sets of all time so it makes sense a lot of them are floating around
Give it a few years and they'll probably shoot up
>>
>>49664523
The deck has 16 creature based win conditions so it has potential.
>Guttersnipe
>Swiftspear
>Thermoalchemist
>Thing in the ice
The real question is, can you out race or control burn. If so, can you then out value actual control?
Being in UR makes it auto win against a lot of combo decks so no issue with that.
>>
>>49674473

Right, but it's been awhile now since they rotated out of standard, that was back in Shadows over Innistrad, a whole two sets ago, wasn't it?

>dude just Path Griselbrand. He's not dangerous.

Good decks rarely have one threat. I question whether Azusa Amulet is a strong deck, but I don't know what you tell you if you think spot removal genuinely stops a deck from functioning outside of Kitchen Table.
>>
>>49674549
Nope. They rotated with Kaladesh arriving.

Bolt test means whether or not it dies to bolt (with a tempo disadvantage). Spell queller costs 3 and dies to a 1 mana spell, the most common in the format, and you don't even get anything back like with path. Stuff like DRS or delver also pass the bolt test because while they die to bolt you're at no tempo disadvantage.
Off the top of my head bob and Steel Overseer are the only creatures played in modern which don't pass the test.

curve seems really high. how do you not die to confidant?
kolaghan seems much riskier than say a titan or stormbreath
i recommend 4 fulminators in the side for tron, valakut decks, etc
>>
>>49677792
lol I've almost died to confidant a couple times, a couple times I've had to use Chandra's -3 on it...which doesn't seem like a good sign. But using Chandra to ramp into Kolaghan has been sweet. Kolaghan is a novelty, but nobody sees it coming. A 6 power flier with haste is nothing to sneeze at, and a couple times people have had to exile their own graveyards to get around his second ability, which is great when facing taramgoyfs. truthfully getting to the endgame hasn't been difficult with the removal, burn and hand disruption. You might be right about a titan though, it certainly seems like a safer option. I'll try out both inferno titan and grave titan. Also I totally forgot about fulminator Mage I'll definitely put that in. As far as stormbreath goes, the pro white is really the only thing I like about it. Paying one more mana for +2/+1 in Kolaghan and having better abilities seems worth it to me.

actually in a deck with 4 lilis and 4 k commands i'd be tempted to push demigod of revenge as your top end finisher. Still weak to path but idk. you can decide where you want the balance of speed and resilience.

about sideboard:
rakdos charm and damnation are good
the other cards you listed seem subpar

Not that anon, but I think he meant a fetch that says "tap, sac, pay 1 fetch for a plains" instead of "tap, sac, pay 1, fetch for a island or plains". Almost as powerful, but not quite which mean casual players/ 2 colour decks would have a middle ground between real fetches and evolving wilds.

By the way /tg/, which shit fetch do you prefer: evolving wilds or terramorphic expanse? I prefer wilds because of the different arts

You don't know what tier 2 means. Tier 2 is a very specific group of decks. It isn't anybody's random brew they take to FNM. Please learn what terms mean before you use them or else you look stupid.

The problem with your deck is why are you in your colors specifically. Why Rakdos instead of Jund? With fetches and shocks you can easily get the third color and have a deck that is orders of magnitude better. What advantage do you get by playing worse cards? Bloodghast is not a midrange card, why are you playing it? Dragonlord Kolaghan is not playable in any format. This is why people are telling you to start over, you don't have a workable concept in your deck. It's just a way worse Jund no matter how you tweak it.
>>
>>49677031

Mardu Nahiri and Jund are just straight up better versions of this deck. If you're playing pure RB it had better be for Blood Moon, but then how are you winning the game?.

Rakdos has always been unplayable because it has no finishers.

>>49677245
>It's already borderline competitive, if not tier 2.

Tiers are usage based. Your deck is tier 99. As in you are the only one playing it. Jund is tier 1, meaning a lot of people are playing it. What's your game plan against Eldrazi? Or Dredge? Or Tron? Or living End? Or Scapeshift?

>>49680760
Ok it's not technically tier 2, but obviously what I meant is that it's comparable in terms of competitiveness, or at least is getting there. Bloodghast was a suggestion from someone on /tg/, and it has overperformed honestly. Being able to pitch it with Liliana and bring it back over and over has worked out wonderfully, it adds repeated pressure. I'm playing Rakdos because I like he color and I'm not big on green. I put this together just to try it out, an lo and behold it wasn't complete garbage, so now I'm interested in seeing if I can take it to the next level. As far as specific strategies against the meta, as I play it more against different decks I figure i'll realize where I'm weak and what I need. If you have any preemptive suggestions I'd love to hear them. Fulminator Mage has been suggested and I think it's an auto include to the sideboard.

I wish people would stop asking for infect bans, and try to kill my dudes rather than race me. Turns out you can't race the fastest deck in the format unless you are suicide zoo, burn, or sometimes affinity.
>>
>>49682404
"Try to kill my dudes" yeah I tried that but they were hexproof, then they had apostle's blessing. Then I was dead. In all seriousness though infect doesn't need a ban.
>>
>>49682404
>"kill my dudes"
>forgetting that aggro beats control
>>
>>49682882
I should say kill my dudes or try to disrupt my hand. I'm more talking about other combo decks rather than control. Someone riding a horse shouldn't complain about being slower than the person driving a car. They should try to shoot the tires of the person driving the car.
>>
>>49682997
Hand disruption is the best defense against infect I've found. The problem is it's not like a true combo deck because they can kill you all at once or over time. Any 1 mana spell they draw is a serious threat, the whole deck is instant gas.

This is true. I don't mind when infect tries to blow it's load in a single attack, but I get pissed off when they have a glistener and a nexus on board and I'm 6 poison off dead. being able to chuck in smaller attacks makes the deck a lot more versatile than people give it credit for.

nope, it's really that + low supply

Wizards wouldn't lose money, but a large chunk of it has to do with a.) what cards can be printed in standard and b.) are they going to be reprinted sometime soon in the future and we just don't know
Wizards has about a year to deal with stuff like card price spikes and those can happen very quickly so they can't really respond soon.

>>
>>49686254

>Why does he bitch about Ad Nauseam so much?

Why the fuck does anyone bitch about Ad Nauseam? I was playing that deck since the original Conflagrate list showed up in the earliest modern tournaments and literally nobody gave a shit about that deck until it won a GP like years later and the list has been relatively almost the same since then except it now needs to play new creative wincons to throw off people like Lab Maniac.
>>
>>49686629
It just doesn't feel busted like other decks. Yeah it's a two card combo that wins the game, but it doesn't feel absurd. It needs mana, can be disrupted, can be rushed, the only thing that could make it feel busted is the fact that it goes off at instant speed but even then, who gives a fuck.
I got really pissed when he said that Ad Nauseam players are mentally ill because it makes it seem like his literally retarded ass isn't.

RUG Deus Ex List

The goal of this deck is basically run as many giant threats and big combo pieces, and then Unexpected Results either into the threat itself, or a card like Breach or Madcap.

A lot of the numbers aren't tweaked, I just made it and played a few games. Probably would add in more infernos and maybe cut an anger because it feels like I'm hitting more cards like bolt and anger with Unexpected results than I want to be.

>The deck quite often loses to itself. Sometimes you're forced to mull to 4, and the deck screws you anyway

Thats the entire point, the deck is so redundant and explosive that you can easily mull to 4 and still go off on turn 2.

The entire reason the deck doesn't lose to itself is because you can easily toss your hand 2-3 times and still have enough gas to go off, and often times it's better to mull than to keep a hand for the raw card count.

Just bought a set of proxy goblin guides cause I can't afford the real deal yet, plus I heard there's a good chance they'll be reprinted in MM2017. What do you guys suppose the price will drop to if he is reprinted, what about if he isn't?
>>
>>49696948
>It's literally the fairest deck in modern
That's why Bloodbraid Elf and Deathrite Shaman should be unbanned; to make Jund even MORE fair.
>>
>>49697028
It's hard to tell. We don't know if he is getting reprinted, or how large the print run will be, or what rarity he will be if he even gets one
>>
>>49697012
>autistic man children
>4chan

I don't believe it
>>
>>49697095
If he's not reprinted do you think he'll get even more expensive?
>>
>>49697028
Reprints are more about giving investors an increased stock of cards rather than actually lowering the price.

I dunno, I'm not sure if cards are in some sort of price freeze with the possibility of reprints looming over them in 2017 or if they're plateaued in price.

so how long until cathartic reunion is banned?
>>
>>49697271
I was being facetious, so I'll be nice just this once for you. It's basic supply and demand. If demand continues to go up and the supply goes down, guess what happens to price? That's right, it goes up.

Ok so I have do ask is siding out lightning bolt correct in certain match ups I've been running UWR and find bolt is very weak against shoal and through the breach
>>
>>49697341
It is always correct to side cards out that are weak against the current match-up, no matter the card. Even cards as good as bolt. Always optimize your deck against your opponent
>>
>>49697297
No shit, what I'm asking is if the demand is static or not. Unless the demand is continually rising the price will hit a sort of ceiling. Eventually the price of a card becomes based more on it's rarity than its utility. If it keeps climbing, eventually it will hit a point people won't buy it because the price just can't warrant the card. So what I was asking is: has goblin guide hit that kind of ceiling or is it going to keep climbing.
>>
>>49697341
Yeah, bolt does nothing against breach and combo. Sometimes I board out one or two against elves to make room for more sweeper
>>
>>49697418
Do people want more goblins guides, and are more getting printed?

Yes, no

Anything else and I gotta bust out my crystal ball to check the future
>>
>>49697418
You're new to buying and selling magic cards aren't you?
>>
>>49697469
>are more getting printed?
>no
But we don't know that for certain the speculation for reprint in MM2017 could cause people to stop buying until they release which cards are going to be reprinted. Nobody wants to drop $120 on a set just to hear that they're going to be reprinted soon. This would decrease demand at the current price for a short term until either the community finds out if there will be a reprint. Alternatively the market for the card could determine that while guides are good cards they're simply not worth X amount of money which balances the price with those willing to spend X amount.I'm not sure which of those two scenarios it is hence the point of the question.
>>
>>49697488
Yes, which is why I'm asking.
>>
>>49697566
>>49697550
Nobody knows whats getting reprintd next summer

I'm trying to get into Modern and was wondering if BW was good to build around, I know its a budget deck, but can be built I to aggro control or midrange.

Would it be worth it to invest in this kind of deck? Or should I get something more established?
>>
>>49698067
BW tokens can put up decent results, and is fairly inexpensive
>>
>>49698067
Don't get into Magic at all man.
>>
>>49698067
BW Tokens is a great budget murdermachine.
>>
>>49698159
Sweet. Thanks. I'll look into buying that event deck if I can find it.
>>
>>49698193
Yeah, the event deck is a really good starting point. It still needs some stuff to become super great, but its a very very nice place to begin.

>>49698207
Which event deck is this?

Any competitive bw tokens these days are around 700.

You can try into Modern on a budget, period. Shill out or go home. The people that play Modern on paper, thier decks are the most expensive thing they own due to poor life choices. Pros don't pay for the decks, they borrow.

Check this list if you own a modern deck more than 500 dollars:

>Virgin
>Work in retail or fast food
>Overweight
>Older than 20 and still lives with parents
>Showers 2 to 3 times a week if that
>Diet consists of fast food and soda

If you are any 2 of these, guess what?

You're a loser.
>>
>>49696502
Wins through Leyline with Stinkweed Imp trading up and Neonate+Amalgam beats if they don't find their anti-hate which they can actually cast.

>Check this list if you own a modern deck more than 500 dollars:

>>Virgin
Nope.
>>Work in retail or fast food
Nope.
>>Overweight
Nope.
>>Older than 20 and still lives with parents
Yeah, I am 22 and live with my parents due to university. They're great people and we have a great relationship, so nobody's angry.
>>Showers 2 to 3 times a week if that
Nope. Gotta stay clean.
>>Diet consists of fast food and soda
Nope. I can cook.

I understand that you are poor, but please don't try to make others feel bad about themselves to justify your lack of involvement in a hobby.
>>
>>49698303
I play jund and own all of the cards
>Has had sex with several women
>Work corporate sales job
>fit
>Have my own place
>Shower daily
>Eat healthy

Stay mad poorfag
>>
>>49696948

being fair doesn't mean it's not oppressive. fair just means that it plays lands, cast spells, and often times beats face.
>>
>>49698303
Let me go down this checklist for the average college magic player:

>virgin
Yes.
>retail or fast food
Yes.
>overweight
No. Underweight maybe.
>Older than 20, etc.
No.
>Showers 2 - 3 times per week
Maybe.
>diet of fast food and soda
Yes.

Turns out, only the casual magic players or standard babies at your local university aren't losers.
>>
>>49698303
>Virgin
No but may as well be
>Work in retail or fast food
No, unemployed
>Overweight
Yes
>Older than 20 and still lives with parents
Yes, not really a choice though without a job
>Showers 2 to 3 times a week if that
No
>Diet consists of fast food and soda
No
