Sometimes it is believed he has an infinite amount of forms and simple gave the number 1000 as a way to comprehend it.

If so it's equally likely to meet Nyarlathotep in an ancient ruin stalking the fools who go there or cute chick Nyarly getting drunk at the bar.

You think that's bad? My GM made nyarly a hooker that my character slept with. She laughed at my dick and gave us a tip to where cult shit was going down because we'd previously accidentally protected a certain interest of nyarlathotep's. That later came to bite us in the ass, of course. And my GM also made my character into a loli.

You need help? You don't need SHIT.

Probably. He doesn't really seem to have a "true" form, just various "masks" he wears, and I doubt there's anything stopping him from making new ones on the spot.

The real fun starts when you have a bunch of his masks running around, all doing their own, often contradictory thing, because old Nyarly has so many plots going on even he can't be arsed to keep track of all of them. I'd give it 50% odds the current presidential election is Nyarlathotep running against Nyarlathotep to replace Nyarlathotep, while Nyarlathotep watches from the sidelines and makes fun of stupid mortals.

Might we just repurpose this thread for general Lovecraft stuff. Haven't seen one in a while, and I don't think whatver stuff I have to say would deserve its own thread. So I'm just going to use this oen to share some musing on Lovecraft's cosmology.

Now, HPL was not one of the writers that did meticulous wordlbuilding and kept thrack of every little detail. In fact, his "Yog-Sothothery" was mostly about having a bunch of names he could insert into otherwise unconnected stories to give an impression of a larger universe beyond the single story, and he often contradicted himself in various details. However, I think him keeping things very vaque aside from some broad strokes is part of the fun, because it lets you have your own intrepertion on a lot of things.

Now, what I've lately thought of is the stuff about the Outer Gods in HPL's "Geneology of the Elder Gods" drawing, and how that might be intreperted (it's not at all serious thing, but it's one of the very few source we have from the man himself about how he envisioned the relationship between different eldritch gods).

Basically, you've got Azatoth at the very top, as expected. Azatoth spawns Nyarlathotep, as well as something called "the nameless mist" and "darkness". From the nameless mist comes Yog-Sothot, and from the darkness Shub-Niggurath.
Now, all of existence is supposed to be Azatoth's dream, and Nyarlathotep is implied to be his soul, or likely the part of his soul/mind that is observing the dream, so it makes sense for him to be one of the very first things to exist, and Yog-Sothot is generally accepted to be the personification of space-time/universe/multiverse. But rest of the stuff is less clear. So here's the way I intrepert it:

...Or rather, I'll do it in next post because I ran out of space.
>>
>>49622336
So, when Azatoth starts dreaming, at the very beginning there are three things: his conciousness who is seeing the dream (Nyralathotep), nothing (ie. void, ie. the darkness mentioned in the geneology), and..stuff that isn't nothing. At first that's just vaque undifferentiated...stuff, ie. the "nameless mist" from the geneology (think of it as you falling asleep and starting dreaming, and there being a short while between the two before the dream really starts). That "mist" eventually forms into the universe/multiverse, ie. Yog-Sothot.
But you still have the third thing, the one that isn't really no thing but exists anyway because the things that are something need a place to be something in. That nothing becomes Shub-Niggurath, who would essentially be the "is not" to Yog's "is", to borrow from Elder Scrolls cosmology.

What I like bout this intrepertion that it does explain the connection between Yog-Sothot and Shub-Niggurath. They're generally described as being of roughly comparable stature, and HPL once referred as Shub-Niggurath as "the wife of Yog-Sothot". The geneology also shows an union between the two that starts a "family tree" leading into the Great Old Ones (and HPL himself, since he added himself into the end of a line descending from Cthulhu; as I said he wasn't exactly serious when he drew the thing).
But Yog-Sothot is literally the universe, while Shub-Niggurath just has some vaque connection to fertility and life. They hardly seem like equivalent things. However, this intrepertion makes Shub the literal manifestation of nothingness/void/everything that isn't the universe (or Nyarlathotep), which makes more sense for "wife of the thing that is the universe". This makes her connection with life very interesting (why is the being that would literally be nothingness/"is not" also be connected to life and fertility?), but I'm not going to start speculating on it now.

And to stay on topic, here's Shub-Niggurath as a cute girl.

>>49623299
Thanks. Well, because I don't really have anything to do at the moment, I am going to speculate a bit about the connection of Shub-Niggurath-manifestation-of-void and life. Now, a word of warning: if what I previously said was a bunch of far-reaching speculations derived from very limited sources, the next is purely my own thoughts and not really based on anything concrete.

First, we'll start from a quote from the man himself:

”Death—its desolation and horror—bleak spaces—sea-bottom—dead cities. But Life—the greater horror! Vast unheard-of reptiles and leviathans—hideous beats of prehistoric jungle—rank slimy vegetation—evil instincts of primal man—Life is more horrible than death.”

Considering HPL was a horror writer, it's safe to say that Shub-Niggurath is more about that kind of life than about flowers and butterflies. In fact, one of the key themes in Lovecraft's writing is civilization vs chaos/wildreness. There's a lot of stuff related to thing falling to ruin and degradation, and is also the reason why his cultists are very often various "primitive" people, whether scary foreigners or inbred farmes (his view on race are another reason, but the two are intimately connected; Lovecraft's racism was actually less about one race being physically or mentally superior, and more about the English culture, which he considered the best culture possible, being diluted/corrupted by foreign influence).
In that light, the connection with life and the darkness/void/nothingess/whatever you want to call it makes more sense. While Shub-Niggurath is all life, from Cthulhu and ghouls to butteflies and puppies, the truest form of life in this case is not a benevolent force, but a chaotic force of violence, corruption and decay, seeking only to spread and consume without thought; something man has barely managed to rise out of could easily devolve back into.

Consider a universe without life would be (or rather how it might be envisioned in the contect Lovecraft was writing, rather than how it would really be): a perfect clockwork universe where everything follows a pre-determined course set by the laws of nature (of course, in real life, chaos is still a thing even in such a "perfect" universe, causing things to occasionally go off the rails regardless). But introduce life (and not just life like we know it, but also unfathomably powerful eldritch entities that don't give a fuck about conventional laws of nature), and the neat pattern breaks down, as living things have a nasty tendency to have some degree of free will (even the simplest of creatures has more degrees of freedom than an inanimate object). Life is "chaos" to unliving universe's "order".

What I would posit, that the "union" between Yog-Sothot and Shub-Niggurath that resulted in the existence of lesser Outer Gods and the Great Old Ones (and likely all life as well), was not really comparable to mating, but rather Shub-Niggurath trying and failing to devour Yog-Sothot. However, the union between them introduced some "Shub-Niggurathness" into the universe (and probably some "Yog-Sothotness" outside the universe), which manifests in what we know as life. Life is therefore essentially a parasitic infestation left behind when the embodiment of nothingess tried to unmake the universe.

>And to stay on topic, here's Shub-Niggurath as a cute girl.
Come to think of it, why wasn't Shub-Niggurath in the "Mythos crestures as cute girls" anime? She'd seem like a pretty obvious choice, being consistently described as female in the source material. Instead Cthulhu out of all things fills the Christmas Cake position.

We had found out about a cult in a small town in the countryside who had been extremely busy at work had been the cause of child kidnappings had been going on. From what we had learned they had taken 7 kids in a town of 42. But I'm getting ahead of myself let's get a bit of background knowledge. Our party was traveling cross country in search of shady shit. The thing was we weren't exactly looking for anything there we had come into town as a party of four just trying to.take a bit of a break after we had a run in with a few Hastur cultists who had been putting on a show of the King in Yellow. The Town's People acted weird and seemed sorta passive aggressive nothing openly hostile but they didn't want us there. They'd watch us looking for something like we had a purpose in coming here. We managed to with some reluctance A homeowner get a room and spend the night. We decided to investigate in the morning, while one of us took watch pretending to be alseep before switching every two hours. As it so happen about a bit after the second switch the homeowner opened the door ever slightly and watched for us sleep for an hour before closing the door, welcome to Churchill.

>>49631195
We managed to learn about what was going on from one of us eavesdropping on some of the Town's Kids gossiping about the missing children. We reconvened in the nearby woods and discussed what could be going on. We definitely knew that this was some of the shady shit it we were looking for.

We tried some speculative ideas on what it could be, human sacrifices seemed most likely but we didn't rule out a far less savory possibility that they were Servants of the Defiler. We had only encountered him once. We were scared shitless at the idea of meeting Y golonac again, he had killed two party members in a previous encounter before we successful fled.

We were wrong. We had no other leads (that we knew at the time: we searched a bit at the town hall/library/courthouse and found a legend about a hunter that wandered the woods and protected the town. We had no fucking clue what that would even relate to.) and eventually returned to our dwelling place.
Once it turned night again and our host had fallen asleep we got a break, an anxious looking pair walking down the street at 2:30 AM. We decided to trail them.
>>
>>49631567
We had one of our party act as a scout and the rest of us would move if the coast was clear. We trailed them for a bit till we had found were the were headed to the Churchill's Church (which was indeed upon a hill. They went inside and we observed by looking through the Church's small windows. There 7 long dead kids and one alive one. We were clearly a couple days too late to the party. We needed to know what we were dealing with to save the 8th.

The Cultists looked sort of like monks with brown robes that were sorts bland. Except each of them carried a stone age like weapon. Stone knives and spears and that sort a stuff. From what we could hear the remaining child was a tempter and a corrupting monster who tainted their children with things that shouldn't be known and how Node-

tTat's as far as the High Priest got till started shooting at them through and shot him with several pistols and shot him and several of the Cultists. We dropped the High Priest and a spear wielding Cultists. It became a shooting gallery after that. Dumb cultists should pack heat next time.

Might as well pick where I left off and present alternative interpretions of the Outer God.

Another way one could look at the dynamic of the Outer Gods and their relation with Azatoth's dream, is to look at them as the main components of the dream. Nyarlathotep, being Azatoth's soul/(sub)conciousness in the dream, is the observer, the one who is experiencing the dream. Yog-Sothot, being the universe, is the stage in which the dream is set in. Ans Shub-Niggurath, being life, provides the "actors" in the dream. If you're missing one, you've got no dream, or at least a very shitty one.
This would also effectively mean that everybody in the universe, from you and me to Cthulhu, is a glorified NPC, with Nyarly being Azatoth's "player character".

>only the railgun manga and anime
>and accel as a protag is dumb, fuck that guy

Railgun is a sidestory to Index, anon. The anime go Index -> Railgun -> Index II -> Railgun S

Accel as a protag wouldn't make sense if you've only watched half the story, but he's actually a pretty interesting character. After the Sisters arc he's basically a monster who realized he's a monster and is trying desperately to be a hero, but sucks at it.

The experiment that was supposed to make him Level 6 was a sham. It never would have worked, and was always intended to get shut down - it was just a smokescreen for getting Sisters spread across the world as part of their treatment afterwards (the Level Upper arc might give you a few hints why). In fact the method they'd originally planned for shutting it down was "Accel refuses to keep killing", but that didn't happen.

Accel always tried to be the biggest and the scariest so that no one would hurt him, but after exposure to Imagine Breaker he realizes it was all pointless. He just killed thousands of people for no reason, making excuses to himself to justify it, and all while dancing like a puppet on Academy City's strings. And even the Kiharas underestimated just how much of a monster he was.

After this he goes on a destructive spiral, and ends up suffering severe brain damage while trying to save a Sister's life.
In the hospital the Sisters save his life, and say they took pity on him because he was just as much a victim as they were - they had seen the look of guilt and regret in Accel's eyes during the experiments. Accel wants to scream at them for how stupid that is, but decides he likes the idea of "I always wanted to save the Sisters" better than the truth, and starts desperately clinging to it in an attempt to maintain his sanity. At the same time he is really, really angry at Academy City for being even more callous about human lives than he was.
>>
>>49644042
The Accelerator manga is garbage though.
>>
>>49644058
Accelerator manga was garbage because it had a different writer who has no idea how to use the characters properly. He's good in Index itself.

"Good Guy" Accelerator is supposed to be like a depressed, autistic Saitama (as in, he would literally be on the autistic spectrum if he was real) who learned human interaction by imitating horror movies. If he ever stops saving people then he wants to kill himself, and if the choker supporting his brain functions ever loses power then he collapses into a pool of his own piss and starts thrashing around babbling incoherently.
But instead of playing that for what it's worth, the manga just tries to make him look generically badass and the story ends up collapsing in on itself.

Still, I don't see why a antropomorphised Shub should be a futa. She should be heavily pregnant, though, considering spawning innumerable young and being worshipped as some kind of fertility deity are her main defining traits.

I always thought it was a satire of the hikkikomori life style played for horror, he's a reclusive man who sees the outside world as a horrible ugly place, is incapable of relating to other humans and is madly obsessed with a girl who arguably doesn't exist, and as he doves more into his fantasy, rejects reality with greater levels of violence

>The real fun starts when you have a bunch of his masks running around, all doing their own, often contradictory thing, because old Nyarly has so many plots going on even he can't be arsed to keep track of all of them.

They don't even have to be masks nor does he has to be forgettable. Just assume that he is a 4 or more dimensional creature.
He could exist in various places at the same/and different times altogether while you and I could be pieces of Nyarlathotep without knowing it because it follows his cosmic plan.

4 dimensional creatures are scary shit.

That's totally in-character, though. Nyarlathotep is the only Great Old One who does the following:
>pays attention to humans, reacting to them with sadistic amusement rather than total indifference
>disguises himself as a human, usually whatever kind of human the people around him will pay the most attention to
>actively and intentionally trolls people
>>
>>49654251
I always assumed a lot of that came from Urobuchi's fucked up past.

I don't know the specifics (and have never been able to find them) but at one point he was in a hospital with some sort of illness, and accepted the fact that he would die. This changed his perspective, he saw the world through the eyes of someone who had given up on everything and thought death was inevitable.

But then somehow he lived. But he couldn't shake that perspective. Which is presumably why almost everything he writes is pretty fucked up and he has no problem inflicting suffering and death on his characters, despite claiming that he poured his heart into them.

This is particularly relevant to Saya no Uta, since the main character is hospitalized at the start for a period of time and it twists their personality from that of a normal person to a serial killer waiting to happen by doing nothing more than changing how they see the world around them. I imagine writing it was some sort of catharsis for him.
>>
>>49654251
True, but at the same time it's a great journey into the mind of a cultist. I see my CoC antagonists differently now that I've read it. And killing them is much more satisfying
Also, one of the rare cases where sex scenes are actually beneficial to the story.

I don't think it's literal. It would be too incongruous with the tone of the rest of the series if it were literal. He couldn't have been on the verge of death and still had the strength to scream "I'm dying!" that many times. I don't doubt he thought he thought he was going to die, though.

Honestly, I think a twist like that would be perfectly serviceable in darker, more critical take on the magical girlfriend genre, but Nyaruko-san is decidedly not that.

The horror stems more (in my opinion) from the protagonist's obsessive devotion. Even when you (the player) KNOW the morally correct choice(s) to make, it's still difficult to make Fuminori abandon his preteen waifu.

You question what you'd do in his position.

If you get the "bad" ending there's even a tearful goodbye as Fuminori and Saya willingly destroy all of humanity indirectly.

Some of his shit was sort of themed around the corruption of civilization, so he might just say "I told you so".

He might still be horrified though. He did sexual shit like women being impregnated by alien monsters, but he meant for it to be horrifying. If he had any idea how popular things like monster tentacle rape impregnation was today he might have to make his own san check.

It's gotten to the point where if you include horrifying shit like tentacles, mind rape, forced alien-style pregnancy, people being swallowed whole, mind control, or even just half-human half-thing hybrids in something then you are at risk of being accused of magical realm because all of that shit is known for being sexualized on a fairly regular basis.

Much to my annoyance. Especially bad if you'd want to include something vaguely sexual for horror value (like Giger's aliens, which are so heavy in rape subtext that it's really more like plain text, but the intent is to make them creepy and viscerally horrifying). Would be very hard to run a Shuv-Niggurath themed CoC game without being accused of showing weird fetishes on the players, unless you tone everything down to a "PG-13 version".

In my case it probably isn't helped by the fact that some of the things could be my magical realm. I'm not sure if it's typical or not, but for me a lot of the things I find cool, scary, or fetishy kind of blend together, so the same thing could be any of the three depending on how it's presented.
Hell, one of my favourite homebrew classes I've done started out with me thinking how to make a "serious" class thematically connected to my magical realm. And that led to me writing an entire homebrew "splatbook" for Cthulhu themed stuff for DnD. I regret nothing.

I should probably clarify, though, that I'm actually extremely prudish, and could never include anything really sexualised in my games even if I might use potentially fetishy elements for non-sexual purposes.

I have been in an ongoing game for about five years. Started off as a harry potter influenced slice of life magic school game; with mages being hidden from mortals, but as time went on, the layers of the onion started to peel away.

All those abrahamic religions? Headed by entities not from earth that want to feed upon certain types of human emotions (in this case Awe). Demons and devils and such? Headed by other types of invading entities that want their own flavor of human emotions to feed upon (Terror/Suffering. Anger, violence flavored competition).

Then there are the Old Ones, whom are re-branded Cthulu mythos entities, that where created by the world itself/herself as her first children, later given guardianship, later the world giving all her power them to fight off invading human souls.

So throughout all this, it turns out my PC is the reborn soul of Marduk (that Babylonian god) who was Emperor of Mankind (the GM is a WH40K geek) way back before he was murdered and sealed away.

So somehow Marduk's soul started accumulating power from humanity because they still considered him someone special and important to them, just as they hate him (Because the kings that murdered him wrote the history books).

Reborn, my PC has found out they can be some sort of giant horned cloven hoofed lolita that lives in the sun. They're also given names/titles like the Anti-christ, the Destroyer, and the Leviathan via prophecies and such.

Cthulu is gothic lolita and also my PC's aunt. What do?

The Old Ones are based around the seven deadily sins. eg: "Cthulu" being based around lust in all it's forms; from the lust for pleasure to including the lust for battle, and even the pleasure of bathing in raw hot blood.

Lovecraft was a mortal and while having some insight to inspire his writings, in this world he was a mix of a fiction writer while being an oracle of sorts.

Creation made everything, but the Destroyer, an entity of nothingness didn't like existence, and actively has gone about trying to corrupt it. One of these aspects was creating negative emotions in sapient beings.

So during Creation one of the begins created fled for some reason to hide, found Earth and made it her body, while fortifying the Sol system from invasion and detection. Then she spent strange eons to create her first children (the Old Ones), entities that would help protect and guide any of her creations, and herself. After that she spent lots of time playing with dinosaurs. Right about the time she was getting frustrated that they where not gaining sapience, a cataclysm happened, killing off the dinosaurs. Not long after that, souls started pouring in through damaged defenses, and humans where born. Not liking what she saw, she woke up the Old Ones, and in a panic attack poured all her power into them and hide deeper, while they cleaned up the mess.

Now humans had corruption in them from the destroyer, and as the Old Ones ate them, this corruption accumulated, until one day they ignored their orginal orders and decided to rule and harvest humanity.

Too long, splitting post...

The protectors of the world now sealed away, parasite entities show up (Holy Trinity, Old school druidic gods, and others of similar ilk) to feast oh mage kind of their delicious emotions. Magekind is getting it's ass kicked by all sorts of angels, monsters, demons, devils, and faries; so they tap into the sealed away Old Ones to throw up a barrier, and that cuts off a huge chunk of mages from accessing magic, and thus they become mortals who slowly forget about magic, and lose a concept of time, and through manipulations by these invader entities, start beliving the world is only a few thousand years old, ect, ect.

Ra (See Egyption religion) was a general of the defense forces and had become the first emperor, then through manipulation by his daughter to "retire" causes Marduk to become the next Emperor of Mankind. He pushes an agenda to build humanity back up, but he pushed to hard, too fast for the likings of the current Kings, who go on a secret campaign to take him out; all influenced by Ra's daughter. They seal Marduk's dying body away, preventing him from truely dying

Fast forward and my PC shows up, finds out they contain Marduk's soul, but during the several millenia Marduk was not quite dead, his sould wandered about, and accumulated power by the thoguhts and desires of mankind, resulting in my PC being able to shift their awarness, to a higher level of existance and thus being able to communciate with the invading parasite entities.

My PC touched her and a dark aspect of themselves budded into a dark creature made of shadows slacking her thirst, a creature that lacked human morals of right and wrong. Never again. Never fucking again.

Aside from silly names, they're not particularly fleshed out or interesting beings. They're described as children of Shub-Niggurath, and looking very similar except smaller (smaller being a relative term). They were only every mentioned in the stuff Lovecraft ghostwrote.
While he used mythos elements in the stuff he ghostwrote, he mostly came up new beings for the stories (although some stuff from his main writing get mentioned as well), or focused on different things. Shub-Niggurath is far more prominent in the ghostwritten stories, and most of what we know about it is from there (such as it being the source of all life, and may one day un-birth all life as well, and interestingly enough was considered, by its priests at least, an entity favorable to humanity that could lend aid against more hostile beings).

The characters make a Monty Python reference in the presence of an otherwise ordinary grenade. The Blasphemous Grenade is not a reference by itself.

Apples can be a reference to Isaac Newton, but unless they are used in a way that would reference him they are just a random fruit.

This probably goes without saying, but don't watch it if you're a Lovecraft purist who can't bear to see the man's work blasphemed against.
