Let me rephrase the question including the obvious facts now.
Even though FMCs have Vector Strike and punch at AP2 due to Smash, the image looks like it has WS0, meaning that it cannot perform melee attacks. The inclusion of Power blades as a wargear option says this isn't the case, but then, what's their WS? It looks like a 0 to me, but it's simply a bit blurry.

Just finished the test model for my Sons of Horus.

Can't believe how much better Kabalite and Sybarite Green than the official FW paints.

Now to paint his 59 brothers and hopefully work up enough skill and confidence to touch my resin models.

I used an airbrush for the two first steps but even coverage with a normal brush would yield the same result.

This was a test mini so there was a lot of trial and error, the rank and file should end up a bit neater than this.

Deredeos forcing grounding tests are the only thing I can think of. Kheres Dreads would work too if they weren't outranged, and these vultarax are so though they can tank Sicaran shots, which lack Skyfire.

So, has anyone here tried out Strike Forces? It seems like fun, and GW's new 4x4 gaming mat or two of the Realm of Battle tiles seems perfect for it.

So, I had a chance to speak at length to some of the Forgeworld guys working on their books today.

Got some very clear news about Book 7 Inferno and Imperial Armour: Fires of Cyraxus.
1) Inferno
It is not quite done yet. However they are supposed to finish it in October, that is the expectation and from what I'm gatherhing it's probably an internal deadline. It was confirmed again that printing takes 12 weeks, as with the previous FW HH books.
So this means a 2016 release is out of the question and that was confirmed to me. If they finish in October as is the plan, the book should be out early February, which as I'm sure you are already collectively murmuring, would be just in time for the Horus Heresy Weekender.
2) Imperial Armour: Tau vs Mechanicus
This book has been put aside lately while all the resources at FW that they have disposable for this sort of work was put to finishing Inferno. As such it will be released after Inferno as well.
However the good news is that this book is 90% finished and does not need much work anymore. When I asked if it will at least be released in 2017, I was told "oh definitely".
Book 8, well I don't think there is anything to be said about it at this time, I'm not sure they've decided what it will be about at this point and it seems that that book is at the very earliest development stages. A 2018 release if you ask me, which would be logical if they already release two books next year.

What does everyone think of the new Stormbird? When I saw the World Eaters one at the open day I wasn't a fan, always liked the old one with the turbines on the side, but I have to say it's really grown on me.

I think they just got bored of marines, so they decided to do a bunch of other stuff instead. Mechanicum, SA, now custodes and SoS too. They've been making all sorts of excuses about how tricky it is to get the rules for SW and TS right, when the truth is just that they decided they'd rather do other stuff instead. Because it's more complicated than the minor variations on a single template that space marines require, it's taken them ages. In addition to the red books you'll need the 7th ed. rulebook, since the red/black FW books are essentially a supplement built on top of the base game.

Other than that make sure you've got a good handle on the rules before making the plunge. Play some Zone Mortalis games first to get used to your legion and units before you move on to the big stuff.

I would recommend getting into 40k first, as 30k is an expansion of sorts for the base ruleset. Play Killteam, meet people, paint, learn if the hobby is for you. That way you can learn the rules and you can go from there.
As far as hostility, people are sick of the local tau/eldar/40k WAACfags trying to branch into 30k with the most broken shit they can manage, or complete newfags trying to be hipster with their little resin army men but also being too cheap to actually invest the time, money and effort into it.
This is an overly expensive niche in an overly expensive hobby, so i would recommend buying at least the red book and the book which has your legion in it. While it is possible to run nothing but plastic, it will be a boring, mediocre force that feels uninspired for everyone involved.

Alright, I'll give 40k a try, maybe I'll try a non-imperium army just to try something new. I painted military models before so I know I like the modelling, I guess we'll see with the game. Brotherhood of psykers is the worst way to represent 30k Thousand Sons. Not all of them were psykers, so whilst the psykers were spread across all units those units should not be able to cast powers untill the last man dies.

And Brotherhood of Psykers + the ability to roll on biomancy is OP as fuck. Iron Arm for example would then affect the whole unit, meaning any marine squad basically turns into a unit of monsterous creatures for a mere 1 warp charge.

Some tables of them are nice but they seem to have ditched them all in favor of playmats and their Zone Mortalis board is a shitty paintjob with two colors. It has a youtube video though, so it must come from a "pro" painter.
