Long story short, 900 years ago Gaia tried to live a normal life. She fell in love with a guy named Will. They had a good life and had 2 kids. Later on, Gaia had to leave them for oldwalker business. She was gone longer than she thought she'd be (10 years) and her kids were killed by vampires in that time, igniting Will's spark. Exposure to the blind eternities and his family's death (he believed Gaia was dead at this point) and bitterness drove him mad. The two had a falling out. Fast forward a century or so. Will's a time traveler, so he's pretty old by now. Gaia makes her plane, cuts herself off from the blind eternities, and goes to sleep for, like, a fuck ton of time (she's in a time bubble, so time moved more quickly in the bubble). Will, now a troll and obsessed with all kinds of "ultimate truths" sees a blank spot in the blind eternities where a plane should be (where gaia's plane was plucked out and cut off). He's like "I wanna get in." Fast forward some more time, and after a shit ton of scheming Will breaks in. The Mending hits Gaia's spark, the plane collapses, taking her with it. Will's like "Oh shit, I killed my wife. I'm an asshole."

And then things get weird. It's...complicated.
>>
>>49571272

>During each round, flakes will be assigned to random opponents in single-elimination tournament fashion.

>Flakes with meme-levels of power will be treated as though they weren’t.
>Flakes that directly contradict lore, especially by going against or interacting inappropriately with canon characters, will be disqualified.
>Flakes that are joke or troll flakes will be disqualified. The use of silver-bordered cards in a flake’s preferred spell list automatically disqualifies them.

>During the first round, all flakes will be placed into the roster randomly. Flakes that are disqualified will give their random opponents a bye for the round.
>During the first round, flakes will be revealed in smaller groups, noting disqualifications and asking the thread if they wish to disqualify anyone else.

>During each round, small groups of flake match-ups will be revealed
>Arguments will take place in the thread and votes will be taken from the polls over which flake is likely to prevail over the other.
>After each round, the flakes that move on will be re-randomized on the roster to make match-ups unpredictable.

>Match-Up rules will treat both competing flakes in a match as though they are both forced into conflict with the other, and neither is allowed to planeswalk away until a winner is determined. I think Tok is a bit too gentle for these contenders (unless his anon wants to correct me.) I think it will come down to either the rage wolf or the literal ball of Izzet magic. I'll look at their sheets more after work to be sure.

>Second match
I don't remember who Talo is off the top of my head (something else to look at later), but between Cala and Vanya I think Cala gets it. They both spit out tokens, but Cala has sic burn and storm. If livin in the country taught me anything, it's that fire is the best hard-counter to huge spiders (preferably delivered via lighter and aerosol can.)

I find it interesting how so many Instants and Sorceries aren't actual spells in universe, but events, actions and circumstances.

Can you make a timeline out of cards for your flakes backstory?
>>
>>49576871
A lot of instants and sorceries, even the storytelling kind, are often pretty real. Oftentimes those spells just try to capture the power or effects that existed in a moment of time and replicate them.

Bandage is pretty weird, but I imagine that they wanted something beneficial as a spell instead of an artifact. Its simplicity is why it's a cantrip.

Feeling of Dread is mechanically in color, but its flavor rather oddly belongs to black.

Survive the Night could very well be a spell that someone has cast to help ensure that they have what it takes to survive a horrible night on Innistrad, just given a more flavorful name by an observer.
>>
>>49573433
I think that Tok is gonna get burned out, leaving us with Ivander and Del. While some of Ivander's spells may not be as suitable for fighting an elemental, Del is also not primarily a combatant (though they do have quite a bit of knowledge that would be useful in combat). This is a tough call, but Weirds rather certainly can still be beaten, so I'm giving it to Ivander.

A samurai, a half-devil, and a spider-person all walk into a battlefield, and they throw tokens all over the place. Honestly, the methodology is everything here, and I think the crazy girl with the fire affinity has the upper hand.

Only if you're familiar with a place, likely mana-bonded with it. Jace had to hoof it to the Eye of Ugin with some merfolk girl he wanted to plow or something during BfZ and he couldn't use planeswalking to fast travel to it, even though he, Chandra, and Sarkhan were the ones who fucked it up before Sorin even thought about looking for Nissa.

After talking to Ugin he then bounced to Ravnica to bounce back to the ally camp, which is why he hypnotized said merfolk to go back halfway into the trip.

Alright, I'd appreciate comments and criticism on this card. I don't have the bio totally fleshed out for this new flake, but he's a former mage-priest from the Boros Legion (they're mentioned on Lightning Helix).

As such, I tried to copy that choice mechanic between a white spell or a red spell effect, or a combination of them for his abilities, but I suspect they need work/a more creative touch.

I was thinking about a way to add a 2nd combat phase once per turn in the vein of Aurelia. Any way to make it workable and not broken?
>>
>>49586302
what's your guy's deal? Make it have a flavorful requirement. Like, say, if they're all about heroes, give it "At the beginning of combat phase, tap target legendary you control. This creature cannot untap until next turn. If you do, untap all creatures you control that attacked this turn and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase." or something. Since your guy is dealing with lightning, maybe have the requirement be discarding an instant to suggest him charging up his soldiers with lightning speed and ferocity?

>Using Mtgcardsmith.
>That formating and wording.

Boy, you need to re-work your flake's card a bit and not use MTGCardsmith.

+1 is too broken, IMO. Absolutely neuters aggro on a FOUR MANA PLANESWALKER with both the damage and the lifegain. See Ajani Vengant; his Lightning Helix is a minus ability.

-2 is Templated wrong, also that's more of a plus ability if you tone it down a bit. Maybe +1/+0 until end of turn. Don't do both because that takes up a hella lot of space for formatting and is TOO flexible and powerful.

-7 is a bit weak. Could beef it up a bit. Maybe throw in first strike?

I threw on my rendition of it, done in Magic Set Editor.
>>
>>49581535
Would you consider Skyre or Kherto? I'd really like more art beyond my shitty phone doodles. I might even bust out a traditional medium depending on how desperate I get.
>>
>>49585927
>they're mentioned on lightning helix
Right you are, but let me also attempt to cross-reference where that falls into ranking within the Legion, because I am into that shit.

Known rankings within the Boros Legion for mortal casters fall into one of the following Power Bands (with 1 being the Guildmaster and working its way down)

>5: Guildmages
The highest rank any mortal can hold within the Guild. Are allowed to make contact with angels. They also take orders from angels and pass them down to the commanders of the army and the League of Wojek.

>9: Wojek Embermages
The Guild's combat mages. They exist to break up situations where direct, hand-to-hand style combat methods aren't effective.

>12: Wojek Apothecaries
These people are the healers in the 'jek barracks. Sometimes they're contracted in from different Guilds, when recruitment is poor.

So we've got three examples of mages, so the question is, where does your character fall in? Given that the title is "mage-priest," I would imagine that the "priest" part means that there is a connection to the angels, effectively making that the same as a Guildmage.

The -7 costs a whole lot for being an easily breakable artifact whose equip cost I can't read.

For the -2 maybe just put it into play? Being able to equip it too is a bit silly. Eitherway that's going to be silly with Withengar.

I still think that tutoring a equipment and playing it is a bit strong for something you can just drop on turn four and equip it while still having a solid walker up.

Just tutoring one could be a -1 or -2, when you're cheating it out like that it just opens horrible abuse cases like Withengar, Argentum Armour and Moonsilver Spear.

Oof, tough call. They both seem like backup characters in power level, meant to support not to lead, so them fighting eachother's a difficult decision. I think I like the archer guy more, and his range focus can keep him out of black trickery hitting distance, but the witch has much more magical focus, and can probably get around whatever he does with his arrows. This is actually a real tough call. What do you others think?

>Winifred VS Domoyl
That's a fight you want to win as fast as you can, because the longer that it goes on, the worse it gets. Summons that punish you for attacking and curses making you weaker bit by bit. This is the kind of flake that you want big answers to as fast as possible so she can't take off and make your day bad.

Now, if that Naturalize is a spell in Domoyl's set, then this may not be so bad, but since there's just three sitting in his gear section, it's hard to tell if that's just a joke. I think that his creatures would be having a bad time during this fight. I don't think that he has the skill set needed to put her down before it gets bad, but it really all hinges on whether that Naturalize is a thing, because if he's really focused on using that spell, then her curses aren't going to stick and it would be a lot harder for her to seal the deal.
>>
>>49585910
>do I get points for keeping it in my flake's colors?
Definitely. I did mine using the preferred spells, because the character is supposed to be a newbie mage and not know much actual magic, so events it is.
>>
>>49589364
I feel like a mage that only casts "events" would be a good way to describe a non-mono red probability mage, who manipulates the likelihood of the events happening.
>>
>>49589438
Red doesn't have all that many events, it's all "FIRE" or "RAGE".
>>
>>49589478
nono, what I mean is that probability mages are more reds thing because they have all the chance-related cards, so making one that wasn't partially red would be flavorful to have them "cast" the events they are manipulating to happen.

So you're thinking they might be a type of guild mage or simply on the same tier?

I do like the idea if also being able to initiate contact with angels like the other guy especially since the type of magic they cast is similar to Boros angels: a mix between defensive/healing White spells and offense red spells.

I do find the priest part of the title interesting since Boros never really dealt with religion much, leaving that to Orzhov and the hippies.

The victor this time is Domoyl.

This day will have no combat as I prepare for Round Five, the Quarterfinals of the Ice Age.
The following eight Flakes are all that remain of the 222 that began this long-lasted skirmish:

>Ussa
>Amund
>Gaia
>Domoyl
>Serena
>Ka’Koarm
>Ivander
>Cala
>>
>>49601170
>By color representation

>White
Gaia, Serena

>Blue
Gaia, Ka'Koarm, Cala

>Black
Gaia, Ka'Koarm, Ivander

>Red
Gaia, Serena (these days), Ka'Koarm, Ivander, Cala

>Green
Ussa, Amund, Gaia, Domoyl

>Mono-color
Ussa, Amund, Domoyl, Serena (originally)

>Multi-color
Gaia, Serena (these days), Ka'Koarm, Ivander, Cala
>>
>>49601243
Sadly Serena would never have made it this far if she was still her kind, mono-white self.

I mean, she might have anyway, but she wouldn't have deserved to.
>>
>>49601243
>>49601170

>>49601442
A little bit of both. In her fight vs the Cathar she lost because she gave him so many opportunities for free attacks, something she no longer does as she now attacks relentlessly. It's also a change in how she fights too, Serena used to use magic defensively which is why most of her spells used to be enchantments but now she's always on the offence using burn and wraths and getting good value out of madness and delirium cards. It lends itself well to these types of fights because it's always a fight with 0 prep which is very much her strongest point now while before she'd have benefited from time to plan and prepare.

>>49601528
Out of those who are left I see Serena struggling most vs Gaia and Ka while having a very easy time vs Ivander/Cala/Ussa.
>>
>>49588700
Is this how Gaia beats Ka'koarm? With Pacify?
>>
>>49601842
Ka'koarm anon here, probably. While Gaia is, as far as I can tell, the only person here with the spellpower to completely overwhelm Ka's ability to repair himself, her green-centered nature means it's possible she'd go the "calm the savage beast" route. Either way, Gaia's going to win when she fights Ka.

I actually see Ivander as being the best matchup thematically and power-wise for serena. From what I can see they're pretty close in casting, martial skill and physical ability, have the same homeplane, and are opposing forces of red, with black vs white stuff going on.
One of a race blessed by avacyn but rejected the peacefulness that came with it, one of a race related to avacyn and distraught at her loss.
Of these potential matchups, Serena vs Ivander is one I personally would like to see most.

I don't think they are as evenly matched as you think. The fights we saw Arlinn have vs those angels is pretty telling, I believe that Ivandar has her beat in martial power but is outmatched in spell casting. The way I see it, if Ivandar gets on top of Serena she's fucked(pun intended), he'll just rip her to shreds but otherwise she should be able to abuse flight while throwing superior spells at him while using her wrath fetish to nullify any packmates he decides to summon.

Also Ivandar is literally this memelord. Pic related.

Is there any walker more powerful than a five-color non-human oldwalker?
>>
>>49610224
See this? This is a better question.

Let's break that down a bit:
>five-color
Comes with a lot of potential, but casting style still counts for something.

>non-human
Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages, because human is certainly not equal to weakness.

>oldwalker
Experience counts for something in terms of breadth, but does not account for actual power level.

>>49610224
>le "color count being an advantage" meme
>>
>>49610264
According to the lore, color diversity has no a disadvantage. Mana bases are a purely mechanical feature.

Therefore there's no disadvantage to having five colors, meaning that a five color flake is by far the most powerful.
>>
>>49610306
Color diversity has no advantage, either. Each color has an endless amount of different possible spells anyway, they just generally fit a certain archetype.
>>
>>49610224
>>49610257
>>49610264
>>49610306
>Color Count
Means basically nothing, because every character is different.

The most powerful multi-color planeswalker that we have in the modern era is Nicol Bolas. He has three colors to his nature and is good at using them in combination with one another. But look at what he actually does when a fight breaks out and tell me if you think that he's really using all three of them in every way that you can think of separately or in combination.

Methods count for everything.
>>
>>49610368
This is truth. Honestly Sarkhan has been through Red, Black, Green, and Blue
According to you guys he should be able to 1v1 Bolas and win everytime because he's at least 3.5 colors depending on how you count black
>>
>>49610257
>Experience counts for something in terms of breadth, but does not account for actual power level
This is true. However, I personally would say the most powerful canon oldwalkers from before the Mending were those that could either create or destroy planes, such as Urza, Serra, Karn, and the make of Phyrexia. From everything we have been told, making a plane, particularly a large and complex plane, was a difficult feat even for oldwalkers and the made plane required constant upkeep. Therefore, I would say that plane-makers and plane-destroyers have (generally) the highest power level of post-Mending oldwalkers, and therefore are likely the most powerful planeswalkers remaining.
>>
>>49610306

It's the hedgehog vs fox thing.

The fox that knows a thousand tricks is versatile, but if he's going up against a hedgehog that knows one really good one, it comes down to the fox and hedgehog in question.

For monocolor walkers, there are hedgehogs out there with spines that you can skewer dragons on, and they are going to roll the fuck over a fox that's not similarly monstrous without even losing speed.
>>
>>49610435
Lorewise, of course he should. He's dragonkin, so he's got the non-human advantage, he's got more colors, and mana bases are purely mechanical so he can cast whatever he wants whenever he wants. The only thing that might stop him is that Bolas is also nonhuman, and an oldwalker. So at two to two on the classic planeswalker auto-win factors, it might be a somewhat even match, but the colors are really the tiebreaker here.
>>
>>49610458
I agree with this logic, since it is based in canon. And if someone is using this argument on top of the potential diversity of a 5-color oldwalker, it is logical to say that Gaia could be approaching a Brolas tier flake. I don't care if people think Gaia is the strongest flake, I just want them to use logic in their arguments instead of memes or namefag-hate.
>>
>>49610465
Oldwalker trumps more colors which trumps non-human.

Mono-color human oldwalker beats five-color dragon neowalker, three-color human neowalker beats two-color vampire neowalker, mono-color elf walker beats mono-color human walkers, etc.

Yeah, and then a based human dealt the death blow.
>>
>>49612060
Nissa being an elf doesn't mean she's older than Elspeth. Not all elves are born before all humans. Also, Nissa fueled Chandra the first time. And Nissa didn't do shit to stop Emmy. Emmy sealed herself away.

So, literally Nissa killed nothing while Elspeth killed a fucking God.
> HURR DURR arrow to the heart weakened the god
> still a fucking God who was 100% a-ok living with the arrow in his chest
Elspeth is a soldier who has decades of battle experience. Nissa is a tree elf who has decades of experience talking to trees and linking leylines to actual powerful Planeswalkers.
>>
>>49612189
To be fair, the Theros gods are kind of pussies on the scale of planar/cosmic entities.
>>
>>49612189
There is no way Elspeth is decades old.

Besides, Nissa has plenty of experience fighting literally everything Zendikar's thrown at her, then fought against the eldrazi since they got out. By sword during most of it at that, and by elementals during the rest.

So several huge eldrazi downed under Nissa's killbelt, including two/three at a time. She also outsmarted and outtacticed Ob Nixilis while holding back because she couldn't use Ashaya. He wasn't at full oldwalker strength, but he still had all his oldwalker experience of conquering worlds and fighting armies and he still lost to her.
While she was holding back. That part needs to be stressed.
So sure, she hasn't killed much, but she's won several stupidly high powerlevel fights.
Remember Drana had to drain a healthy as fuck kor to be able to solo a single giant eldrazi. Nissa killed 3-4 a story with such casualness that they were boring.
>>
>>49612302

>Implying Elspeth didn't die for the sins of Theros

And then after reigniting his spark Ob soloed her, Jace, and Gideon without breaking a fucking sweat. While none of them were holding back.

Nissa is as strong as the plot demands of her. Nothing more.
>>
>>49612569
Well duh, he got most of his power back when he reignited, regaining the mana and power he had across what was his vast interplanar empire.

Ob is no Bolas with a spark, but he's definitely up there.

The point is though was that she still beat a demon, which means he still has plenty of mana and power, just nowhere near what he should as a walker, with an oldwalkers amount of practice, training, and combat experience by herself, while she herself was mostly depowered, while consciously holding back.

When was it stated that she's 35? Though I admit, that's two decades max.

Nissa's been training with the most militant elf nation on Zendikar since she was a child, is the last land animating animist, and a prodigy of it at that.
Eslpeth is also a prodigy of combat, but that's not exactly an even fight.

Elspeth is strong, no doubt, but I don't think she'd be able to beat Nissa.

Nigga, literally every planeswalker bar a few are prodigies and speshul. Literally, being speshul and better than others is part of their definition. The only difference between canon planeswalkers and snowflakes is that canon planeswalkers are canon. Fuck, they even break canon rules, like no timetravel without silver.
>>
>>49612715
Jace just got a better hand during that game.
>>
>>49613167
>It's waifuism to compare what Nissa has done with what Elspeth has done and say Nissa's done a bit more.
Right

>they even break canon rules
>like no timetravel without silver.
That wasn't a canon rule, that's Urza's rule. That's what he came up with after research. That's not a solid rule to the canon. Never was.
>>
>>49613167
I'm thinking that KtK to Fate was more of a rift than time travel without silver.
Ugin dying created a rift that stretched back a little before he died, Ugin not dying led to that rift not existing thus Sarkhan being pulled out of that time.
Silver being needed was for the method of time travel Urza knew of that didn't need rifts but also caused paradoxes and required a lot of energy.
>>
>>49613376
>Silver being needed was for the method of time travel Urza knew of that didn't need rifts but also caused paradoxes and required a lot of energy.
This. There's a difference between a rule that "All time travel can be done with silver" and "The method Urza developed requires silver."
>>
>>49610925
>Dragons
Those are dragons. I have to say that dragons are pretty powerful, but everything is variable. There are knights that live to slay dragons.

>Demigods
Pretty good at whatever they're good at. This isn't everything.

>Vampires
Have their own set of weaknesses with their strengths.

>Giants
Big, but generally also slower as a result.

Honestly, you could make this argument down the line for any race. Race doesn't matter, abilities (though some are racially granted) and methods matter.
>>
>>49614056

This. While an average vampire may be more powerful than your average human, for instance, that difference become negligible when the main source of their power is something f other than their bodies.

A vampire mage and a human mage are differentiated between the power if their magic, not their race.

This is even more true among walkers.
>>
>>49614326
Reminder that Innistradi vampires fold hard to living wood.
With all her stoneforging, all Nahiri needed was a properly sharpened tree branch to off Sorin.
>>
>>49614358

Admittedly, Sorin also massively outclassed her when it was sword against sword, but that's more of a testament to Sorin's individual skill than just racial hax, as normal-ass Cathars duel vampires to the death all the time despite the natural advantages vampires have.
>>
>>49614326
What if the planeswalker's race plays a direct role in fueling either the type of magic they use, the power of that magic, or both?
>>
>>49614624
Sorin only really lost that fight because he fought on her terms, she had a major advantage when she has time to plan a venue and prepare because she can use her lithomancy to twist the leylines to benefit her and screw him.

Basically Sorin is a retard and fucked up continuously that block eventually ending up both damning his plane and getting stuck in rock.
>>
>>49614628

I'd have to see examples. While we have example of normal beings being made strong by their race in various ways (see marquee creatures for each color), and some reasons are more prone to having magic/powers, the level of power seems to be independent of the race. A human Walker is as strong as their magic is and their humanity is neither a boon nor a weakness. If Elspeth and Sorin duked it out, I don't think her humanity and his Vampirism would matter one iota beyond possibly White mana being strong against undead. But once again, that's a magic thing.
>>
>>49614971

I do feel like SOI pulled a fair amount of character assassination on ol' Sorin for no reason I can understand. He was always kind of a dick, and he certainly didn't do all he could as a good guy, but he just seemed a lot more incompetent and spiteful in this block.
>>
>>49615116

While I think seeing your plane get fucked over and having to murder your pseudo-daughter can make anyone a bit testy, you're right. I think they wanted us to be able to sympathize with Nahiri just a little bit as she destroyed Sorin/Avacyn/Innistrad. Because otherwise there would be zero doubt she's an insufferable entitled cunt and a disgrace to white walkers.

The real boon Sorin has from his race is just longevity. That's the real boon that most races have in MtG over humans, the ability to live longer and gain more experience.

>>49615116
>>49615220
Pretty much, I really don't feel like killing Avacyn is in his character at all. She's so damn valuable and important to him, it feels like he'd exhaust every option instead of doing it as soon as the spiteful cunt she's been protecting asked him to.

Really it's that Sorin is a very, very selfish person, at the end of the day Avacyn is still probably doing more good than harm as far as he is concerned. He knows the Eldrazi are free and as far as he knows they can't be stopped so offing his planar shield just seems so damn stupid, especially as it doesn't seem like he even needs Olivia's help. When the battle happens he needs the vampires to fight the Eldrazi horrors that have amassed around Nahiri. If he hadn't unmade Avacyn to gain her help then he wouldn't have needed their help to fight her. It's literally a paradox.
>>
>>49615483
>>
>>49615483

Not to mention Olivia immediately reneges on the agreement to help him so she can usurp power on the plane when Sorin isn't in a position to retaliate, and he's known her long enough this should not surprise him at all.

The Quarterfinals, Round Five, of the Ice Age begins in about a half an hour.

The Rules from now on are slightly different:

>During each round, flakes will be assigned to random opponents in single-elimination tournament fashion.
>Flakes will be treated as though they are all neowalkers in order to create a balance of power.
>Flakes with meme-levels of power will be treated as though they weren’t.
>During each round, small groups of flake match-ups will be revealed
>Arguments and votes will be taken from the thread over which flake is likely to prevail over the other.
>Discussion in the thread now takes a greater deal of importance: polls will only be released after a considerably reasonable amount of serious discussion has taken place.
>Polls will be up for 24 hours after their opening.
>Polls that appear to have been tampered with will result in a replay of that match.
>Ties will be broken by chance.
>After each round, the flakes that move on will be re-randomized on the roster to make match-ups unpredictable.

Huh. Ivander didn't fight an opponent that wasn't arguably handicapped in combat until Round Four?

Still, I'm favoring Ka'Koarm here, and not simply based on name recognition. It looks like Ka'Koarm is significantly brawnier than Ivander and anyone he's fought so far, so brute force is already looking less appealing against a cadre of massive horrors, and I feel like the fish's spellcasting is probably about equal with the red/black douchebaggery Ivander's all about.
