Reminder that preferred spells are not actually spells your flake uses, but schools and variants of magic they know and prefer. Look at what they do conceptually, not mechanically.
>>
>>49539191
I'll agree with this, using a flake that I made ages ago as an example.

He doesn't summon Palisade Giants and Darksteel Myrs to give them Indestructible and Pariah respectively. It's simply an idea of the sort of magic he uses at a personal level. He is a suit of darksteel fused to flesh and he uses his magic to redirect any damage that would be inflicted on others, directing it at his own near-indestructible being instead.

I personally use the cards as another sort of flavor to give the character identity in my head, rather than THIS IS 100% THE DECK THAT THIS CHARACTER USES TO FIGHT.

And finally my own, Skyre, and Murdock. I'm still brainstorming a Cala comic, and I've got a skyre comic I'll get around to eventually, but I'm still open to ideas or characters anyone would particularly like to see poorly smeared across a screen.
>>
>>49539633
All of that is fine, but summoning creatures is still summoning creatures. This is where them being non-legendary is important: you don't summon things named Palisade Giants specifically, you summon giants that take damage for you and your allies, shielding you with their bodies.

If you don't want him to summon those things, that's what Pariah is already there for, no need for redundancy.

I find it interesting how so many Instants and Sorceries aren't actual spells in universe, but events, actions and circumstances.

Can you make a timeline out of cards for your flakes backstory?
>>
>>49539718
Something for Ussa might be fun, but I don't have any real ideas at the moment.
>>
>>49539744
The issue is that people would assume that he is using it offensively, or that he isn't focusing on the obvious indestructible-pariah synergy.

So this more or less makes the point 'hey, hey, this is an idea of how this guy fights' rather than 'these are exactly the spells that he is capable of using and exactly the deck that he would play.' And I look at the cards other people select in a similar fashion. You don't need to put in every option the character would ever use or a viable deck composition, just ten or so cards that fit the sort of techniques that the character would use.
>>
>>49539892
All of that is true. I just got the impression from your replies that your flake doesn't actually summon anything, in which case I would replace the creatures with similar spells, if I were you. There also seems to be a lot of redundancy in that spellsheet.
>>
>>49539852

Welp, so far it looks like this is where Izari finally bows out. Glad she made it this far. I felt relevant for a change, at least for a little while.

Still rooting for her though.

In fact, I think she would actually win this fight. She doesn't do a lot of flying, she can handle the little stuff and the big stuff, and can keep herself healthy. Shame she's behind on votes.

I'm paying more attention to the first one since that's where all the discussion was, but it's actually gone through points in time where each flake has had the majority/been tied for the majority of the votes.

Also, I think there's so many more votes because we're finally up in the finals

Through strange circumstances, your snowflake is sent back in time, through the Blind Eternities, to a blank slate of a plane, an empty and barren wasteland. The snowflake gains all the power of an oldwalker and is free to shape and design this plane as they see fit, shaping it into whatever sort of world they desire.

You know, in a couple of years people will start forgetting that Avacyn was ever a protector. They'll know she was, but when they think of her they'll only think of the madness she caused (from their point of view) and the horrors most of the angels became.
In a generation or two, her entire legacy of being humanity's protector will be forgotten by the common people.

I think that you're just trying to bait me here, but anyway.

That depends on how Innistrad goes from here, I get the impression from Thalia that she won't let that happen. If they continue to worship Avacyn and adhere to her beliefs from before SOI as Thalia and the Order of Saint Thraft did then the population at large won't forget. Of course there will still be plenty of people who resent her and the angels, there was plenty of those after the original block too.

>>49542438

4chan, everybody.
>>
>>49542507
>Implying that cosmic horror doesn't fit the horror plane.
>>49542489
Innistrad is perpetually ten flavors of fucked. Sure, Avacyn and 2/3rds of the angels are rip'd, but an entire bloodline of vampires got stoned and Arlinn is still around, and afaik she seems to be able to keep werewolves under control.
also, how likely is it that someone's gonna take Emrakul and make a cult based around her that warps it's view of her into an angel?
>>
>>49542561

Cosmic horror and gothic horror are both horror but they are not the same fucking thing. Eldrazi, Phyrexia, and Innistrad worked in rapid succession the first time because they were all different kinds of horror. SOI/EMN just threw them all in the blender and hit the button.

Humanity's still fucked without angels. Last I checked, the army of unkillable demons wasn't going anywhere and now Sigarda, who isn't even as strong as Thalia anymore, is supposed to power wards to keep them out?

Also, Angels and Gryffs are quite literally the only things on Innistrad that don't eat humans. The end of the cursemute means there will be no living in peace with werewolves, because Arlinn's not nearly that powerful, all bets are off with the surviving vampires, who are led by a bloodthirsty psychopath, and you can bet the mad scientists and their armies of zombies didn't learn a fucking thing from what transpired and will go on making life hell for the now severely depleted forces of good.
>>
>>49542635
Bonus points because Sorin, who is trapped, is the only planeswalker that actively gives a fuck about what happens to Innistrad. Once again, he is the best hope for the people, but this time he really can't do anything.

Let's clear some things up here:

A lot more than 2/3rds of the angels died. Sigarda's flight was the smallest flight by a decent margin, after you factor in how many of them will have died during that block there could be as few as 10 angels alive.

The Markov bloodline weren't that big of a deal as far as I can tell, they weren't as bloodthirsty as Volderans or as psychotic as Falkenrath so their death isn't a huge hit to vampire activity. However, Avacyn led an attack against Castle Falkenrath(Presumably with Flight Goldnight) and destroyed it, during SOI. That is a seriously big deal as I am led to believe that they were by far the most active bloodline, now heavily decimated and presumably without a leader.

Arlinn doesn't mean much. She can control herself but all that means is that any pack she leads she can potentially prevent from attacking humanity and maybe use it against the undead/vampires/demons. But there are far more packs that she has absolutely no control of and a lot of werewolves who have some serious resentment issues thanks to the sudden ending of the Cursemute causing them to slaughter their families in the middle of the night.

It doesn't matter how many demons died in this block, they're immortal and there is no longer a reasonable foil to them. I expect that many more humans will turn to worship them without Avacyn to put faith in, they're the only force left on Innistrad with the power to answer 'prayers'. Except maybe one moonmonster...

>also, how likely is it that someone's gonna take Emrakul and make a cult based around her that warps it's view of her into an angel?
It's already happened once before on Zendikar and they were a lot less desperate for an angel to put faith in.

>>49542635
Pretty much. Sigarda and the other archangels are several massive leagues beneath Avacyn. In 'A Gaze Blank and Pitiless' when Sigarda saw Avacyn approach she wrote off even attempting to fight or run, she resigned herself to death.

cont-
>>
>>49543131
Sigarda's Flight is by far the best flight to still be alive though, they have the ability to protect people even if it's a farcry from the power of Avacyn. However you must take into account all the damage to the ecosystem of Innistrad that the loss of the other flight causes:

Avacyn powered all the wards of the flights as well as granted the Cathars and Archmages their spells and abilities. Think of it like falling as a Paladin or pissing your god off as a Cleric, now you're just objectively worse than those who have never relied on magic for boons or those who haven't lost theirs, like ALL OF THE THINGS THEY FIGHT. A greatly overlooked part of Avacyn's power is that she was the Blessed Sleep there's a few sources on this but I believe the most recent was Planeshift: Innistrad.
>Avacyn was the archangel of Innistrad, revered across the plane as the source of hope, of protection, and of the Blessed Sleep—a peaceful eternity of slumber in the grave.
Now that is gone and especially without even Bruna and her flight to coral the dead there's going to be a lot more angry giests running around and a lot of very happy giestmages who are more often than not pretty unstable people.

Flight Goldnight taught basically ALL Cathars at Elgaud grounds, it's one of the reasons Cathars were such good fighters, they are taught by millennia-old beings who specialised in fighting. They were also at the forefront of demon and undead fighting. Undead especially is an issue, Gisa and Geralf and presumably Ludvic are still kicking and boy are there a bunch of lovely new corpses for them to use, imagine what fresh horrors Ludvic and Geralf can produce with Eldrazified corpses?

cont.
>>
>>49541277
Ka'koarm's space is a scary place
and, like, 3/5s new phyrexia apparently. I guess they know how to raise horrors there.
>>
>>49543131
>>49543311
In conclusion.

Thalia, her stand, Odric and REM FUCKING KAROLUS are pretty badass but they were all still around during the last absence of Avacyn and things were 10 shades of fucked then even with all the angels around and almost every demon in the Helvault.

The werewolves took a hit from the dronepack and Arlinn will hopefully make on pack into allies of humanity but they remain a serious threat.

Vampires took two massive hits with both the Markov and Falkenrath bloodline being decimated, losing their home and presumably their leaders. But only Avacyn's power has ever worked to repel them, they aren't natural beings, Sorin made Avacyn to combat them which is the only reason her symbol and power worked to repel them. As you can see in EMN's card 'Borrowed Grace' a vampire uses a holy symbol of Sigarda to defeat and Eldrazi monster, I'm sure that Sigarda only let him do that because they were allies of convenience but the point is that her symbol and power clearly is not anathema to them like Avacyn's was. The surviving vampires have very little to fear from the church with Avacyn gone.

Demons are sort of an unknown because they barely appeared in the last block. As far as we know though they're fine because they can't die and will probably find humans more eager to seek them out without angels to look up to. Something to consider though is that demons were Innistrad's answer to Avacyn, with her and most of the angels gone will many of them cease to be? I guess we'll have to wait on that one.

Undead are going to be a massive fucking problem still, perhaps more than ever without Flight Goldnight and with a huge amount of fresh corpses and no Alabaster wards to protect them. Angry Geists will become much, much more common with rampant necromancy and no Blessed Sleep.

So yeah, Innistrad got a lot, lot worse. Even with the damage dealt to both sides, the side of humans not dying definitely came out of this far, far fucking worse.

No. Gisela and Bruna knuckled the fuck down and worked their asses off despite it. Given that only one of my flakes would likely make a plane under those circumstances, this is what would happen if Winifred were put through the scenario:

Predominantly swamps and wetlands. People live in these marshes and near rivers. It can be beautiful, but the far-flung reaches are quite sinister. Traveling far enough, you could find where the streams eventually end and run off to a far-flung sea. The rocks are jagged no matter where you go, but reaching any barren place takes a great deal of time. As plentiful as the trees seem to be in the marshlands, it is incredibly rare to find anything that would count as a "forest," like a needle in a haystack.

She would then proceed to seed it. The only intelligent race placed there would be humans, and there would initially be no mages. The purpose of this is to keep the world non-complex and the populous easy to handle.

I thought for a second Phylakteos was the Eldrazi guy and was about to say that and a lich is a random matchup that seemed perfect for maximum REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>Izari didn't make it

Shame. I thought she really had a chance.
>>
>>49544628
>>Phylakteos VS Joth VS Serena
The lich is a fairly good match up for Serena, if we're assuming all a neowalkers then he is nowhere near as strong as shown on her sheet and as a Goldnight angel killing necromancers and the undead is literally her job.

Im unsure about the Sphinx, she doesn't have her usual flight advantage but fortunately he isn't the kind of sphinx who has a fetish for mind magic or counterspells.

In game terms, most of Serena's best removal is exile based which is going to hurt the lich and both of them weak to wraths as they both seem to have very creature heavy strategies.

Andromeda again so soon? Are we already down to the quarter finals?

> Phyla:Joth:Serena
I feel like it's a no brainier who everyone is going to vote for. So, is an debate even meaningful?

> Narimi:Ka':Andromeda
Narimi is too inexperienced to face either of the two heavy aggro flakes even with enchant hate, it seems like she'd be far too slow to stop either of them from wrecking her face before Narimi had a chance to build up a countermeasure. And Ka' seems like he wouldn't be aggro enough for the angel/demon slayer. As she can build fast and end it quick with poison, putting buff counters on herself, or dealing instant damage with burning anger. Not to mention her artifacts.
>>
>>49546975
As to the second match, I will point out Narimi is millenia old, and I don't think Andromeda is QUITE strong enough to take down Ka's horror rage machine. Hell, I'm not sure she could even generate big enough spells to take him out physically. I'll said it once and I'll say it again: Ka is basically a spell-slinging gyrados on cocaine.
>>
>>49546975
Ka is very little if not aggro. Ka's spells are mainly fueled by rage, then accented by ambition and will. And on the matters of speed Ka'koarm's is, quite literally if you check, unnatural. The demon would have to be of the ilk of the more monstrous of innistrad's to keep pace, because Ka will always be right up in your face, and there's a whole lot of him and not a lot you can cut that will last. If you try and fly around and shoot at him, expect many of those to miss and the rest that do hit making him angry enough to rocket right into the sky after you. No steering mind, it'd be more thrustr-propelled jump, but ka'koarm will find a way to close the gap, natural or not. Most likely not.

As linked before, this is how Ka' behaves in battle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiKeTPL6HPk
save that he is a couple times larger.
Fighting Ka head-on is never smart, and the only flakes I was certain could do it either are out of the competition or are Gaia. If you want to beat Ka', using magics from blue, white and green that screw with emotions or magnitude of anger are ideal, because they render him unable to cast, meaning he slows, cannot regenerate, cannot counter, and cannot magnify stronk.
>>
>>49547254
so... pacifism counters the angerfish?
>>
>>49547254
I feel like Ka would like Rage Against the Machine.
>>
>>49547294
actually, yes, pacifism is Ka's true hard counter in one spell. there are a couple others, but pacifism is the one that occurs to me most often. Amazing what a 2-mana spell can do.

Huh. You know, that actually makes me feel a little better. >>

>>
Someone is fucking with the votes again.
>>
>>49544628
As for my opinion on the fights...

>Phy, Joth, Serena
I'm reading on one of Serena's sheets that she has specific training in fighting the undead, so that's a boon for her against Joth right of the bat. On the other hand, Joth has more experience than she does in...well...in life as a planeswalker, so he is undoubtedly more comfortable with his magic than she is. He is likely a more potent caster. There is also specific mention on his sheet that the Mending did not affect his powers too much, as much of his skill was honed pre-ignition. At the same time, he is more creature focused, and Serena has plenty of creature hate. It looks like he has some lifegain and regenerate, tho, so he can probably whether the storm. Really, it comes down to timing and strategy, because this fight is very close. Meanwhile, I think Phy's greatest advantage comes from his race and intelligence. Serena has creature hate, and Joth can match Phy's creatures with his own, so ultimately his biggest strength will be his size and ferocity. And in the end, I don't think that will be enough to overcome either Serena or Joth.

>Narimi, Ka, Andromeda
I have to think more about this one to comment intelligently on it. I think the fight will come down to Narimi vs Ka. In Narimi's backstory, she is basically a super human, and was one of the 20 original humans that went around cleansing their plane of giant monsters. So she can likely handle a creature Ka's size. And her spellcasting is more focused and concise. But Ka is an engine of rage, hate, horror, and REEEEEEE. So much so that I'm not fully confident that Narimi could take him out. Maybe match him, but best him is another thing. Andromeda could probably put up a good fight with her casting (...is that Phyresis I see on her sheet? Wtf?), but she is physically outmatched by both Ka and Narimi. I have to think more about this one, but like I said, I think it comes down to Ka and Narimi.

You guys see this? This is garbage.
This is more than double the previous record of votes, and the numbers lay out too specifically. Someone even got the number of thread posters to match after someone pointed it out. Which plane has a magic academy of some sort?

I'm gonna make a flake who went through school constantly losing in practice duels against a blue mage, and becomes forever salty.

She dedicates every waking moment of her life to either learning magic specifically effective against blue mages, or hunting down all the blue mages of the multiverse.

She'd run Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast, Burnout, Boil, Boiling Seas, Anger, Increasing Vengeance, and Fork and Reverberate for good measure.

Better that we know nothing about some flakes. I'd rather that to them getting unnecessary padding and storytelling when the basic idea was literally good enough as it was. Or characters concepts that are so basic that all any further writing would do is hammer on the same points over and over again.

Gaia and Serena are examples of those respectively. Gaia was a great concept and seriously didn't need any tampering with and Serena is an angel wot is angry about Innistrad.

Sometimes less really is more when it comes to writing.

>>
>>49563313
Wrong is subjective.

Also, trial and error, anon. Trial and error. The base concept for Gaia has never changed. TThere's just more around it that sprang up from collabs with other anons, which was fun. The goal with Gaia was to explore a comcept and then, mainly, to make her world a d&d setting (which I've done.) And on the side, I got to build another world, Eöl, which has been a really fun exploration into classic tropes in myth and fantasy. Worldbuilding is my shit. And had I never fleshed out Gaia past her flake sheet, Eöl wouldn't exist and Gaia's Realm wouldn'tbe a setting I'm about to run a game in. Her class has always been worldbuilder, and through her I've built toworlds. It's been fun, even if there was some convoluted shit along the way.

So the only difference between planeswalkers and regular people are the ability to planeswalk and the resulting absurd amounts of mana they can get access to from all the travelling different lands, right?
>>

>all those typos and formatting errors
Fuck this phone.
>>
>>49563414
It is subjective but I've stated my opinion.

Funny thing is, people never actually talk about Eöl, one of the few things that sprung from the character that's actually good. Instead, it's all about the early shit that was written with Will that in my opinion, was garbage that ruined Gaia for me as a character concept.

You're welcome to disagree but I feel that you could've elaborated on the setting without going down the path that completely fucked up the character. The way you 'fleshed out' Gaia in those collabs served only to turn me off of the character entirely.

That's my opinion, I'm welcome to it and you're welcome to disregard it too. I would've liked her better if the only content written about her was the basic sheet and this is an example of how someone can like characters that they """know next to nothing about""" over characters that are fleshed out in a manner you really dislike.

Planeswalkers are always capable of some sort of magic and planeswalkers are always capable of planeswalking.
>the resulting absurd amounts of mana they can get access to from all the travelling different lands
The concept of mana, lands and the link between them is a nebulous one. In recent fiction, WotC has decided to ignore it entirely. Jace does not show any sign that his telepathy is powered by mana or that he ever runs out of mana, nor does he draw mana that he uses to cast spells from lands. In the recent fiction, the magical abilities of planeswalkers just appear to be superpowers that they can throw about willy nilly. Which makes sense, considering that they're trying to depict MtG as more of a superhero setting than a dedicated fantasy setting.

>In the recent fiction, the magical abilities of planeswalkers just appear to be superpowers that they can throw about willy nilly. Which makes sense, considering that they're trying to depict MtG as more of a superhero setting than a dedicated fantasy setting.
If I ever do any writefagging, I will 100% ignore this, linking magic to mana to the land is interesting, and explains why green has ramp.
>>

Thanks for the advice. I liked splitting the last bonus in two between humans and angels. It accomplished what I was going for by having both on the field, but in a more elegant (and less underwhelming) way.
>>
>>49563528
What can I say? I'm not particularly picky when it comes to collabs. And that was so early in the storm, that any collab was welcome.

It's all good though. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Will was just one story in her history. Her friendship with Narimi was another. I'm still open to more. That's an advantage to having old flakes. You can shoehorn in just about anything.

PPersonally, I feel the snowstorm is kind of a drafting board for story ideas. When you get through a story or collab, you look back and see the mistakes that you made (as with aspects of Gaia and Will) so that you know what to avoid in the future. Eventually if I want, I will make a final script for Gaia's story. But for now, she's pretty much my drafting board for story ideas and notes (hence why she's so much more cluttered than my other flakes.)
>>
>>49563486
Yes. It was different when there were Oldwalkers, but that is pretty much how it is. No longer are they powered-up god-like figures, they are just people that can traverse the multiverse; if you're not tough enough to handle it, then you get wrecked.

That being said, so many people with sparks never even become planeswalkers. The kinds of events that ignite sparks vary from person to person, but typically comes with a massive shift in the person; lots live their lives entirely normally and then die never having become Planeswalkers, so nothing "normal" would cause ignition, but rather something incredibly meaningful to the core of a person would.
>>
>>49563624
Also make the +1 "until your next turn" else weird shit goes down.
>>
Does worship actually do anything? To gods, to people or planeswalkers that are worshiped as such.
>>
>>49563619
I personally find linking mana to land to be a little bit weird and clunky, when writing. Linking their abilities to mana and having mana as a resource that they can build up or run out of is totally fine for me, and I'm fine with green mages drawing mana from the land to bolster their magic, as a specific 'thing' that green mages do.

But I think it'd be clunky and disengaging if the writers had to write about which island and where Jace was drawing his mana from every time he cast a spell. It's irrelevant to the story, it doesn't really add anything to the narrative and I find it uninteresting.

On the other hand, Nissa bonding with the land to draw upon its mana to bolster the spell of its allies is much more interesting because that's her thing thematically, it serves a narrative purpose and it gives you some idea about both the land's character and that of Nissa.

So be careful about how you handle it and make sure that it doesn't become a pain in the ass to write.

On Theros, worship is a big part of how magic flows. It fuels the Gods there in some fashion, and Gods in turn can grant boons.

In pre-clusterfuck Innistrad, faith helped power charms, spells, and invoke Avacyn's protections. There was a reciprocal relationship between humans and angels.

I don't think worshiping a Planeswalker generally does anything, though Heliod was concerned that Elspeth might be worshiped, which in turn might jeopardize his power.

By remaining anonymous, someone that contributes something is disconnected from their work the moment it is created. Their work is judged on its own merits, not by who made it.

By becoming a namefag, you remain connected to that which you've made. Sure, you are judged according to that which you've made but that which you've made is also judged according to how you act.

Which leads to the creations of certain namefags being rather over-blown and overrated because of how present they are in the thread.
>>
>>49564866
Yeah, but it's not as bad as people make it out ro be. Most of the active writefaggers and flake makers are namefags, so our data in said analysis of popularity is skewed. Namefagging is a double-edged sword, as others have stated. Namefagging opens you up to criticisms and/or attacks, as you are proving right now. And, to add to that, it is impossible to linger in a thread like this for very long while actively contributing content and NOT gain an identity akin to a namefag. We've seen this happen before.

To be fair in a non-offensive way, Avacyn completely spoiled a plane that was great when it stuck to its gothic horror themes, rather than suddenly transforming into ANGELS VERSUS DEMONS.

For me, when ranked by theme, it goes something like this:
Dark Ascension > Shadows over Innistrad > Innistrad > Eldritch Moon > Avacyn Restored

Oh, I like this. Iosha and Graveborn become a Captain Jack / Miss Elizabeth type relationship.

>>49565312

I think it could have been implemented better, but the whole block was building up to a showdown between the Angel/Human/Church forces (for lack of a better word) and the undead/demon/evil forces on the plane.

But with all the talk about Avacyn, her power, and her role on the plane, I don't think her return could have resulted in anything other than a massive pendulum switch in terms of power, bringing it back to an equilibrium between good and evil.

SoI and Spooky moon are the two that really ruined the plane, for me. I know the argument has been made that it was a natural progression from gothic horror, but I don't quite buy it.

It's less to do with "they're ignoring it" and more to do with "It's clunky as fuck in writing"

They don't take the time to explain the mana thing because it'd get old if every other sentence was basically "[Character] connected to the land to charge their mana. before [action]."

They've explicitly mentioned the connecting to the lands thing twice in the past three years: Elspeth connected to a New Phyrexia plains to get the mana to planeswalk, and hated it because "Ewww, Norn" and when Ob Nixilis reignited he reconnected with all the lands and empires he conquered throughout the multiverse.

There's probably a shitton of it going on in Nissa stories too though but I'm not going through BfZ Nissa again.
>>
>>49565410
Except vampires, zombies and werewolves had nearly no presence in that set, it was less of a conflict between them an angels and more of a conflict between them and another threat that had jumped out of nowhere. Gothic horror was swapped out for angels versus demons, not even angels versus gothic horror. And it wasn't an equilibrium, it was gothic horror getting absolutely smashed.

I understand plot progression, what I don't like is such massive mood whiplash, with the last set of Innistrad looking like it belonged in a different set. Hell, even a 'humanity fuck yeah' theme of humans defeating the darkness would be better than an angel set out of nowhere in a block where it felt totally out of place.

As for cosmic horror being a natural progression from gothic horror, I also disagree but at the same time I'll say that SOI did it fantastically while EMN over-did it to the point of being nearly as bad as AVR. The difference is that EMN was a natural progression from SOI, not a complete palette swap unlike AVR.
>>
>>49563581
Except ob nixilis specifically mentioned drawing on ancient bonds he lost before and they mention running out of mana from time to time.
>>
>>49565493

>And it wasn't an equilibrium, it was gothic horror getting absolutely smashed.

It was a course correction. Without Avacyn, humanity was pushed to the brink. When she returned, Humanity made up all the lost ground and returned (presumably) to the rough equilibrium that existed before she was imprisoned in the helvault.

>Gothic horror was swapped out for angels versus demons, not even angels versus gothic horror.

I'll agree in part with this, though I think demons qualify as part of gothic horror. Demons had already been portrayed as the big bad in Innistrad, though. As I said, it definitely could have been done better. The other enemies of humanity did get sidelined so that angels could fight one single enemy out of many, namely demons. You can somewhat count werewolves as included via the cursemoot, but I think your point still stands.

AVR narrowed the wide breadth of the war on Innistrad (Angels + Humans vs Demons, Vampires, werewolves, zombies, horrors, etc) to one front of the war (Angels v Demons). It was a cropped image, essentially, which I can understand was jarring.

>The difference is that EMN was a natural progression from SOI, not a complete palette swap unlike AVR.

I disagree it was a total pallet swap for the reasons above, but I get where you're coming from. I do agree, that taken on their own, SOI and EMN did flow more naturally in that the followup expanded on instead of narrowed the scope in regards to the original.
>>
>>49565617
If anything, all that the SOI block ruined is the AVR set and the happy post-gothic-horror stage that it set up. It ruined the things that came from AVR, not the rest of Innistrad. Werewolves, vampires, zombies and spirits, all things I consider more core to the identity of Innistrad than angels, are still a thing, even if many of them are corrupted and distorted. Innistrad remains even though all of Avacyn's shit is gone and they had to undo a lot of AVR's changes to make it feel like Innistrad again.

>>49565989
That's fair. If I wasn't such an Avacyn-fag I'd have probably enjoyed SOI but EMN took it too far. For exactly the same reason people don't like AVR, it was just not Innistrad at that point, there were a few cards here and there that reminded you it was the same plane but with all the Gatewatch and tentacle monsters it was just as alien to the plane as anything from AVR.

Really I think that AVR suffered a lot from being the 3rd set meaning that it wasn't large enough to show the resurgent angels and the released demons without sacrificing the plane's theme. The Cursemute was also definitely a mistake, it meant that any return block had to have something happen to Avacyn in order for one of the planes signature tribes to be present.

Fucking this. If AVR had been a large set, I think they could have hit all the nails in the head, so to speak, and the resurgent angels and demons would have been a natural evolution, not a focus shift.

>It ruined the things that came from AVR, not the rest of Innistrad. Werewolves, vampires, zombies and spirits, all things I consider more core to the identity of Innistrad than angels, are still a thing, even if many of them are corrupted and distorted.

Interesting. It really came down to a difference of perspective, then. My focus on Innistrad was always the human/angel centric one. The horrors were defined not as themselves, but as antagonists to humanity. For me, Innistrad was much more defined by humanity, it's culture, the Avacynian church, and the angels.

Whereas for you, Innistrad was restored in some fashion by stripping away Avacyn, it was lost for me. To me, Innistrad would have remianed more true to its roots had the angels not gone mad (or had been restored in some fashion), and fought off the new cosmic horrors which had replaced the gothic horrors.

But full disclosure, I'm a mono-white player with a hard-on for angels so I tend to look at things from that perspective flavor wise.

But hey different strokes for different folks.

Not who you were talking to, but you rustled me something bad.
I'm glad that you admitted you're mono white, because your opinion is wrong, as douchey as that sounds on my part.

Horrors were defined outside of their roles as antagonists to humans. The entire concept of werewolves is steeped within internal struggle and the duality of primal and human natures. Vampires were the embodiment of class struggle, literally feeding upon humanity like the parasite that is the filthy upper class. They also throw ridiculous parties. Geists represented the vengeful regrets of humanity, a sort of second edge to tge coin.

It's totally cool if to you, the angels and humans were more your thing. But to definitely say that's all Innistrad was really about is to ignore the bigger picture, something that every aspect of the setting contributed to. For you to not see the overwhelming influence horrors have had on Innistrad is to just ignore entire aspects of the setting you think are lame. Which is fine, just admit to it pls

For me it's more that Avacyn and the Flights are very deeply rooted in Innistrads flavour and lore. You can't swing a cat without seeing her symbol or a reference to some part of the church. The entire setting is contingent on the humans and their struggles against the horrors and the angels play such a massive role in humanity's functions and the flow of the world, not just as protectors.

I can understand people disliking AVR as a set but really it's not like it changed too much lore wise. Sure the angels came back with a vengeance but that was because the demons were free meaning in order to maintain the balance Avacyn got stronger thus empowering the angels. It was a sharp turn from Dark Ascension sure but after a little while Innistrad should have returned to being the same depressing place where everyone barely survives. The only reason it didn't, that we are told that Avacyn basically won the world and everyone was 1000% happy is so that SOI seems even darker by comparison. 'Cause let's face it, the only emotional parts of SOI were all cheap as fuck.

>I'm glad that you admitted you're mono white, because your opinion is wrong, as douchey as that sounds on my part.

Nature of opinions, senpai. Don't worry about it.

>Horrors were defined outside of their roles as antagonists to humans.

Except you proceeded to define each of those in terms of their relations to humans. Werewolves represent the inner beast of mankind. Vampires are manifestations of excess and vice, from lust, to wealth, to gluttony. Horrors/abominations (Frankenstein) deal with hubris and the human intellect going to far. That is the why horror is compelling, from Frankenstein to werewolves to vampires. There are different forms it can take, to be sure, but in the end, horror is horror because of how humans react to and define it. And to what extent we see the evil inside them within ourselves. The "are we really so different" element.

>But to definitely say that's all Innistrad was really about is to ignore the bigger picture

Nah, absolutely not and I apologize for not being clear. In its entirety, both were essential. BOTH made Innistrad as great as it was. But if I had to point to one or the other and say "that one is more like the Innistrad I know" I'd go with the Avacynian church vs cosmic horrors instead of the cosmic horrors/corrupted church vs random humans.

One "simply" replaces gothic horror with cosmic, whereas the other tears the original dichotomy apart.

But once again, ideally, both should have stayed. I'd have like WotC to find a way to return to Innistrad that complimented original structure instead of tossing it on its head.

Pretty much, even if there's not other landmass it makes sense for people to think that the sea might be safer after all the shit that happened.

Really though, whether you like it or not is all opinion. I did do a massive few posts earlier in this thread about the state of Innistrad post EMN though so unless something changes I am 110% sure the plane is dead.

Obviously Innistrad is a very popular plane so it's not going to die. I feel like demons weren't always immortal, that they used to be killable but in order to balance out the plane after Avacyn's creation they gained that ability. Innistrad seems entirely about balance, Sorin was correct that Vampires were a problem but perhaps he was not correct to try and fix it himself. Demons were never an issue before Avacyn gave too much power to the human side so it stands to reason that the plane on some level tries to keep balance. Perhaps the angels will gain that ability now, reincarnating so that there is enough of them to keep the humans alive.

Just a thought. Clearly something needs to change before or during the next return block though or it will just seem like a major asspull for the plane to still be kicking a few years down the line.

>Angels are just mindless cocksleeves with wings.
Fixed that for you.

Do you have the full collage of this angel's life? She appears of a bunch of cards, ending in Clip Wings.

Personally I hope that Innistrad in the future goes a bit more towards the classic kind of 1950's weird horror. I'd love to see resurgences of Invisible Stalker or weird Innistrad plays on HG Wells or Jules Verne or hell, even some of the more weird Lovecraft stuff. I want future innistrad to be pulp innistrad.

Underwater/Waterworld plane when? With underwater caves and plants trapping huge air bubbles and shit.

I meant detail on the angel herself, not the art.

Angels confirmed for fine and coming back/respawning like demons now that Avacyn isn't sucking up all the white mana a dead angel leaves behind.

Should it be "instead and that creature's controller..."?
