It varies. I tend to like anything that is some what realistic in its anatomy regarding the mechanics of being an upright biped.

So no silly shit like literal cats walking on their hind legs and being a sapient race. No hunched over beastfolk whose backs should be giving out due to failure of their vertebrae. Absolutley no weebshit monstergirls unless they are horrible monsters designed to seduce idiots to munch on or weird chimeric abominations from gods or demons.

My own campaign world has horsefolk who are fairly animal looking, with hooves and unguligrade legs, and catfolk who look almost human except for the fur, ears, tail, and cattish nose.

Pic related, though the feet are complete shit.

As wild beasts, barely tamed by civilication.

They have the bare minimum of human traits (can stand upright and wield things) and they can commune with their own "race".

Catfolk for example work close together with domestic cats in cities, and more those who roam the plains do so with their big-catbro mounts (which they most likely grew up with).

As Khajiit. I don't think I've ever seen any other beast-folk cultures I really enjoyed.
Khajiits' deeper lore is interesting, with their forms determined by the phases of the moon, a strange arabic/tibetan/something-something culture culture and a niche as sly traders. They feel like an integrated part of the world.

Warhammer's beastmen are pretty one-sided barbarians. They got a little angst going on with being rejected from human society and all that, but it is kind of a moot point when most official material only play up the insane berseker side.

Most other beastmen tend towards tagged along for the furries territory, which ends up making them strangely detached from the settings they are supposed to inhabit.

Whatever floats the boat of my players. Zero times has including a furrybait race resulted in magical realms or cringe in my games. It's about the same as wanting to play any other humanoid race.

You just have to pick players that are functional human beans.

As for how I personally like them, something like the Argonians or Khajiit, mostly because I used to play the shit out of Morrowind as a kid. Culturally farther away and perhaps more tribal and/or religious than regular humanoids. Foot anatomy is handwaved and not the focus of the game.

Tits on non-mammals is silly tho.

I usually have the majority of them be tribal, with a minority living in other cultures and pursuing different kinds of civilization. If I have a beastfolk civ, it's usually a mixed group with a caste system, so you effectively have a multiracial society where each race plays to its strengths.

So what's your idea of a good Fantasy race? Tall, Scandinavian women with blue skin, six tits, and violins for heads who communicate with mournful solo's?

I'll copypaste a bit of lore from my magical realm files. Not much context due to post length contstraints, but here you go:
The bones of spotted hyena are both desirable and abundant, as it is the largest and strongest of all modern hyaenidae. Those from Europe, while much rarer, also highly desirable as they are significantly larger and stronger still. They also have among the highest ability to digest bone, meaning that they can further strengthen themselves through eating more bones at a quicker rate than other types. The downside (in some practitoner's opinions, but of course not all) is that the female is notably larger and more muscular than the male, and that even without a hybrid gender as a result of using bones of both male and female hyenas (which are often impossible to distinguish between), the female possesses a large psuedo-penis and false scrotum, although being voodoo practitioners, most are generally able to be rid of this if they do not desire it. Among spotted gnolls, as with their animal counterparts, males are the lowest ranking members of society, and even the highest male is lower than the lowest female. Hybrid gendered individuals will usually be considered female, and those it is common for males to flee to groups of other subtypes which further compounds the low status of males by making them a minority. As spotted hyena bones are difficult to gender, rivals may often try to 'poison' eachother by tainting eachothers' bone caches with the bones of males. They range from around 6'0 to 8', although males are almost never more than 6'6 tall.

Visually, the best style is the middle ground. Not cute fetish bait only intended to get someone's dick hard, but also not a monstrosity that looks like it leaped off the Pro-Human League's propaganda posters.
>>
>>49561991

Eh. I don't necessarily mind fetishbait.

It's only a problem for me when the entire race is fetishbait. I can accept that there are attractive, cute, doe-eyed beast ladies so long as it's clear that they're simply the most attractive individuals among their kind.

Bonus points if traits humans find attractive in them are considered unattractive to those of their own kind.

>Bonus points if traits humans find attractive in them are considered unattractive to those of their own kind.

Whenever I play a furry or scaly beastrace, I tend to drop a few observations about the weird nature of naked human skin in. And at one point also the assumption that a black character was a subspecies of Human, because we also had a Fire Elf or something in the party.

But it's a good point to make about a universal nature of a species. But I mean the stereotypical "furry" cartoony look, where the character's sole function seems to be to look cute or attractive. However, if it's a character that looks like a normal character who is being cute or attractive, that's fine in my book.

Pic related, I suppose. It's a Gnoll, and this is made by a furry artist, but the character is clearly drawn as a Gnoll first, with the characteristic hyena neck. She just happens to be dancing in a skimpy outfit. But dress the same character in a suit of armour, and the fetishy angle disappears.

As time went by I've developed less respect for this viewpoint. First off, it's kind of antagonistic. Secondly, there's no real "right" way to do something imaginary, but that's kind of an empty statement. The true answer is that context matters. Context always matters. And the context for beastly* is that these are intended as two-dimensional monsters for the players to fight. That's fine, but people have become more and more interested in playing these races, and have also started viewing their animal inspirations as less and less scary. Even hyena's, once the archetypical loathsome animal, have gotten a bit of a PR boost. So in that context the depiction makes zero sense. Sure, maybe you just want them as monsters, and that's fine, but then we get to this chestnut:

>if they're just humans with fur, then what's the point?

That's a bit of a loaded statement, because it rejects any deviance from that 2D monster mould as pointless. It ignores the context of people wanting to play them as characters, or interact with them as neutral elements. And, well, that's what people want to do, and that's why they're "softened" from their erstwhile monster depiction, which is what you really mean with "beastly". Because let's face it, quokka's are beasts, too, and quokka beastfolk would be about as "beastly" as a pluche toy.

*They often aren't very "beastly", in terms of looking like beasts. People love to post rat monsters in this context, and all of them look way too gangly and sickly compared to actual, real life rats, which are quite portly and have short limbs. But that doesn't make them look threatening, so the "beastly" anthro rat people tend to have very few rat-like characteristics. As for Gnolls, any faithful depiction of spotted hyena's devolves automatically into Magical Realm, as I'm sure we're all aware of these days.

Oh, here's more on Lamashtu:

>(Deific Obedience) Sacrifice an unwilling living creature in the name of the Mother of Monsters. Draw the process out to inspire the maximum terror and suffering in your victim. The death blow you deal should be savage and destructive—do not grant your sacrifice a clean death. Once the creature is dead, remove one of its bones and sharpen it to a point. Use the bone to cut yourself deeply enough to leave a scar. Leave the sacrificed creature’s mutilated form in the open where scavengers may devour it or travelers may see it and know of Lamashtu’s power. Gain a +1 natural armor bonus to your AC.

>(Demonic Obedience) Engage in a tryst with the sincere intention of being impregnated or impregnating your partner, or sacrifice a creature that has been alive for no more than a week. Gain a +4 profane bonus on saves against insanity, confusion, and polymorph effects.

He claims not to be a furry (which is difficult to believe, given his body of work), denies that the book is going for a "furry folk" theme (which is a baldfaced lie), and then asserts that furries will likely enjoy the book (which is probably true).

Maybe I am overreacting. But given the shit that's been published with this guy's name on it, a healthy dose of horror seems reasonable.

I don't believe in this guilt by association nonsense. There's nothing wrong with getting an artist who has also done porn. Anyone who is even remotely competent at art has drawn naked people, and presumably still does. Nobody suggests regular artists are somehow tainted because of that. The step up that porn takes is that the naked people are supposed to arouse you. Big whoop. And that fox girl is dressed more conservatively that absolute fuckloads of other women in this genre, including official Paizo characters. To thought police your way into claiming that it is borderline porn is kind of ridiculous.

So in the end the point is that one pervert worked on this. Well, too bad, but unless it works its way into the product itself, that's a non-issue. Why get bent out of shape over that when you've got stuff like Game of Thrones being watched by half the Western world?
>>
>>49565067
The one on the right is borderline but just ears and tail isn't furry.
>>
>>49561075
...How?
>>
>>49565251
Yeah, but what would you do? There's no reason to say "yes I'm a furry", and there's no reason for others to go probing into people's fetishes as if that shit means something. Even if he's an autist who has a hard time keeping his fetish and his work seperate, that's not exactly unheard of in Fantasy. Least of all the D&D side of Fantasy. You'll find entire threads here with dudes defending chainmail bikini's as "realistic". The behaviour itself does not become more objectionable with a coat of fur.

Sure, his publishing history is a valid argument. But denying accusations is not.

Same can be said for FFXI ofc. Quadavs will always be my favorite.

At this point, we have more antifurries inserting their shit into my tabletop than furries.

As the entire problem with furries in the first place was them inserting their shit everywhere, i can only conclude that antifurries have grown more autistic and bold about their insertions than even furries were.
>>
>>49565503

I'm using his statement more as a source of amusement than an argument.

welcome to the shitty movement/counter-movement synergy. both sides need to be kept in check or you'll end up with the counter-movement being worse than the intinial shitty movement.

This.

Now we've got the fucking Weebshit Agenda to deal with.

>>
This thread is likely bait, but what the hell? I'll bite.

>How do you like your Beastmen

1st and foremost, they need to look like actual beastfolk, so just having humans with cat ears and tail is just cosplaying humans and not good enough. they need to look like actual anthropomorphic animals to be believable. (at least for me).

2nd: They need to be fully integrated into the setting, with a distinct culture and history that integrates them into the setting. It tells me that they aren't just there for fap-material, especially if they are just as flawed and imperfect as every other race. Otherwise it feels like you just threw them in last-minute just so you can have something to fap to, and really you should be doing that during your private-time.

Tell me if this sounds reasonable!
>>
>>49565762
>i am now willing to let furries do whatever in my games.
You mean you'll let them exist?
Them existing seems to be all it takes to trigger autists these days.
>>
>>49565590
Yeah, the furry-policing is tiresome. I've had real life friends go on about how much they hate furries. Yeah, guys, I really give two fucks about which fetishes trigger you. One has a tendency to stick up for pedophiles, too, which makes it even more bothersome.
>>
>>49565784
Honestly, i dont know how far they will go with it, as they are actually way better at moderating their shit in my games than the anti groups have been
>>
>>49565762
Haha, yeah, you get these people complaining that furries, SJW's, trannies, etc. insert their shit everywhere. While they are bringing up furries, SJW's, trannies etc. without any fucking reason. I mean, if it's a legit gripe, sure. But randomly being triggered about men playing female characters, or animal people, or whatever the fuck is exactly the behaviour they complain about.

The other day there was a thread with a guy who got triggered over safe spaces because the gay DM didn't like him calling other players "faggot".

Let me let you in on a little secret:
The Anti-X people are the ones behind the drama and bullshit. They're literally retarded and overreact to shit. This attracts trolls like flies to shit. Back in the wild days with furry porn shitposted with abandon fucking everywhere?
Explicitly to trigger these retards.

I wish I kept what I had. All I had were a bunch of feats and a single class.
>>
>>49565882
>Ironically I find it harder to fap to "just for fapping" animal people

Heh.

Same, but because I'm so desensitized to it that my opinions on how it's done get in the way of me enjoying it.

Wasn't a "furry" to start, but I've been on the internet long enough to have formed "refined tastes" in regards to it. Like if your neighbor's garage band played dubstep so fucking long you went from being annoyed to being able to write a 30 page dissertation on dubstep musical theory.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds. He's actually pretty reasonable about the pedo's, in the sense that people tend to overreact a little bit, beating up suspected pedophiles and such. It's a very "the lw will take care of it " standpoint.

It just doesn't jibe with randomly dropping "I really hate furries" at random, and for no reason.

Still not as bad as the antisemitic anti-racist I used to know.
>>
>>49565974
I lost all the stuff a long time ago. If I ever get the willpower to do so, I might take another bash at it.

I'll probably spend a lot of time saying to people "I'm not apologizing for making references to children being murdered, sold into slavery, kidnapped for sacrifices, and being made catamites so grow the fuck up" when people complain about the content.
>>
>>49565942
I'm not superautistic about it. It's just kind of weird how a lot of furries stop at just the looks. I mean, the attraction is that they're animal people, right? So show me how that works!

Though there's a special place in furry hell for artists who do furry spanking and draw red welts on the fur. That's just retarded, and makes my dick want to shoot off in space.

Non-human along every axis. I don't just mean appearance, I'm thinking about diet, reproduction, social structure... I like thinking about how biology shapes civilization, so I like beastmen as a way to explore those themes.

It is headcanon of mine that D&D dromites plunge their elected royalty into royal jelly to mutate them into kings and queens, and those kings and queens produce the royal jelly needed for their replacements. As a material component, a handful of the royal jelly can be used to cast spells that mutate or transform living things at two spell levels lower without penalizing the DC.

Dromites will call in every single favor, fight to the death, resort to necromancy, and go through every single asset they have to protect the royal jelly, as the loss of the jelly will doom the homestead.

Stealing royal jelly is considered an act of genocide among civilizations that are allied with dromite kingdoms. Is it worth it? Fuck yes it is.

Lots of dairy, therefore lots of cattle, therefore lots of grazing ground will be required. Each clan would have to control large tracts of land. Might be nomadic, might be sedentary; depends on how rich the land is. They'd know land management techniques, but probably little proper agriculture; performing back-breaking labor all day every day to feed something else is a losing proposition. Cattle as the basis of wealth means a cattle-raiding culture and associated feuding; warfare is about stealing the other guy's shit and wrecking their faces, not so much taking and holding land. Not sure what real cultures you could look to for inspiration; maybe medieval Ireland, from the time period that gave us "The Cattle Raid of Cooley."

Even if cheese is their main diet, all that cattle may be used as part of their diet as well.
A lot of fat and protein, a culture based about raiding. These guys must be huge and really built.
>>
>>49566564
But cheesemaking isn't a quick process, right? So they have to live in settled areas where they have the industry and craftsmanship to turn milk into cheese.
>>

It's from some old, dead Pokemon style h-rpg. I checked on it recently and not only is it dead, but the crowdfunding site it used is dead.

Apparently though the dev is keeping it struggling on under the name "shards of eradine". Although he bizarrely put most of his effort into a mobile app of it before making the actual game.
>>
>>49566814
Aha! An actual source!

Thread's slipped into autosage. Bye bye thread.
>>
>>49566661
Depends on the cheese. Simple cottage cheese can be made easily and quickly. I've even seen Masterchef contestants do it during their cooking time.

According to wikipedia cheese was accidentally discovered by hunter-gatherers keeping milk in cow's stomachs for transport, unawares adding the required bacteria and churning the product by shaking it during transport.

Oh one more source. The dead project was called Pocket Pussies, if you want to go down that rabbit hole of trying to find the artist / h scenes / more like it.

I, the obscure porn wizard, have spoken
>>
>>49566939
Okay, that's just plain wrong. I remember when that went up for crowdfunding, and I've had the image saved since before then.

I never expected it to actually succeed. The artist working on it got infected with brony.
>>
>>49566352
South African tribes were sometimes pastoralists, with other hunter gathers and farmers. Cattle raids were common, since it was an easy way of acquiring wealth.
>>
>>49566108
I believe there's a type of branding with very cold iron instead of hot, that makes hair follicles turn white permanently. So that's something, if I recall correctly. It still only explains one color of tattoos though.
