Currently on Kickstarter, Killbots is a game in which you build robots, upgrade them and use them to attack your friends. The action is driven by the fact that robots don't always act as expected; while the game is quick to learn, a roll of the die makes every move a calculated risk. killbotsgame.com

I gave up on Kickstarter after two projects I backed never happened and two turned out to be complete shit. It's a good idea, but until there's some way to tell the peaches from the lemons I'm out.

Doing your research can certainly help. Looking for credible creators, the work they've done, and their track record of previous indiegogo or kickstarter campaigns is a good basic procedure. Most of the projects I've backed are by credible creators with a successful project or three already under their belts.

This.
I find it's actually pretty easy to find the projects that won't go tits up.
I like the idea but the art looks like shit

Well, for a good rule of thumb:
>look for their previous projects
>read up on their project, it's certain to have previous work and lead-up chronicled somewhere
>look at the scope of their project and scrutinize it
>take a look at their prototypes; are they showing you mostly fake images, or are there pictures of concrete finished products and prototypes
I've backed mostly miniatures kickstarters like Pantheon of Chaos, a couple RPGs, a few gizmos or toys, and an art book. In most cases, these creators have a good track record of previous projects, or their scope is easy enough as to be easily achievable.
Suffice it to say, a small company of miniature designers having a kickstarter to get some moulds made of their master prototypes so they can manufacture in pewter is relatively simple. Someone claiming to revolutionize the world of gaming with their product might tip you off to a scam.

That'll help with the no-shows, but what about the shit-shows? Tasty Minstrel does some good stuff, but Dungeon Roll just isn't fun.
