Waiting for the CORRUPTED.com debut edition

Discuss the viability of the Warcraft setting, story, and lore, for a tabletop game.

Previous thread: >>49474814
>>
So this is basically a thread for people who are literally too retarded to click on the little link to /vg/ up on the top of the screen? That's sad.
>>
>>49508882

/vg/ just talks about the actual game, in these threads we talk about the setting like a bunch of nerds.

So, how about that statue of the pregnant tauren lady in egyptian-like clothes in kharazhan's crypts, eh? What's up with that?
>>
How do you reckon ironforge gryphon riders fight?

Stormhammers are supposed to be kinda iconic for the wildhammers, so I assume the ironforge dwarves would fight in some other way from a gryphon.

Mountain Kings have stormbolts though so maybe it wouldn't be that different.
>>
>>49508927
Maybe an ancient desert tauren offshoot that was conquered by the cat-taur people?
>>
>>49507294

I think the final boss over every expansion since MoP has been a preview of the next expansion.

Last patch/raid/boss of Pandaria: Orcs. Leads to Warlords of Draenor, where we mainly fight orcs. Until the last patch/raid/boss of WoD: Demons. Leads to Legion, where we mainly fight demons. So if Legion's last patch will be about Old Gods, next expansion will be about old gods?

It's a fucking stupid model, though, because it means that every expansion is about something the players are already sick of from grinding out the end of the last expansion. Probably half the reason they did it is so they can use the assets they've already started developing early, and save time/money.
>>
>>49509275
I wouldn't mind if it means we get more old minions.

They seem pretty light on those at times.
>>
Are undead supposed to be resistant to old god corruption, or are DKs just so used to getting weird urges and voices in their heads that they ignore them?
>>
>>49509275
Well, we are already facing Old Gods minions in Emerald Nightmare, goals of Xavius just happen to align with those of Legion.
>>
>>49509812
What the fuck are xavius objectives?
>>
>>49509868
>Corrupt the Emerald Dream forever
>kill Malfurion
>???
>Profit
>>
>>49509423
DKs are already getting brain-fucked by the LK/Their own edge (all of them, not DK only mind you here) so they don't care for the whispers, old gods don't lose their time with them as it is useless because either they cannot understand (ghouls) or because they're already brainfucked beyond all repair (Forsaken, DK).

As for fleshy curses; they're dead and they can't affect that. That's why they made the mechanical entities fleshy, UD go the other way, they're rotting.

Might be, since they're legion-crafted (scourge) that they've made immune from the get go.
>>
>>49509881
yep.
Good ol' xavius.
>>
>>49509906
On the other hand, there's plenty of hints that Yogg was playing plenty of influence into the Scourge.
>>
>>49509310
Vanilla had C'thun.
Burning Crusade had nothing.
Wrath of the Lich King had Yogg Saron and the corruption of the Titanforged.
Cataclysm was pretty much nothing but servants of the Old Gods causing chaos, with a dragon coat of paint.
Mists of Pandaria had the Sha as the primary, main threat, although a lot of focus was also given to Garrosh and the Lightning King.
Warlords of Draenor had nothing.

In the grand scheme of things, we've probably faced the Old Gods and their minions with far greater frequency than we've faced the Burning Legion.
>>
>>49510150
So when we're on Draenor we don't fight Old Gods, but when we're on Azeroth we do fight old gods.
>>
>>49510150
I meant like new creatures other than the squidmen, lobster guys and assorted varieties of cultists.
>>
>>49510076
Undead can't be influenced by the Old Gods. The Scourge made use of Saronite because Yoggy couldn't actually do anything to them. It's why they had one of his Faceless chained up in a mine. Even the Twilight Hammer had very, very few Forsaken compared to pretty much every other race, which is probably more from those Forsaken attempting to stave off dying more than anything else.

>>49510259
Correct. Draenor doesn't have a world soul to corrupt like Azeroth does so while an Old God COULD be there it was nowhere near as valuable a target.
>>
>>49510076
Influence!=Out right domination. It felt more like he was peeking than actually touching things.

And none of the scourge plans really do align with his other than kill all life in azeroth. But again, the scourge doesn't like the OGs see WC3.
>>
corruption is the thinking man's fetish
>>
>>49511029
>Correct. Draenor doesn't have a world soul to corrupt like Azeroth does so while an Old God COULD be there it was nowhere near as valuable a target.
I read that the void lords basically flung the old gods into the universe in the hopes of landing on worlds with world souls, so they must've been kinda lucky with landing some on azeroth.

I wonder what would happen to old gods that don't land on worlds with world souls.
If they could eventually project themselves towards another world, or open up portals.
>>
>>49509181
I'm pretty sure that all gryphon riders are Wildhammers regardless of whose colours they bear. Unless they started training Ironforge dwarves after WC3, they're all mercenaries who rent themselves out to factions they trust

I was more considering an what if scenario where ironforge didn't have access to wildhammer gryphon riders.
They have gryphons, so figured they should be using them in some war capacity.
Less of a need due to flying machines though.

Apparently there ironforge gryphon riders added in cata.

They have attacks that require hunter weapons, goggles.
I guess they're basically riflemen on top of griffins then.

Looks like they added human gryphon riders from stormwind as well.
And that they defended westfall against the legion, and accompanied the fleet towards the broken isles.

So a fairly recent development it seems.

They just added flying guards to cities once players were able to fly around them, too.

So if Arthas lost his soul before he became a death knight, then why is he being tortured in double hell?

also wasn't there stuff about his soul trying to hold back the scourge and make dumb ass plans to lose?

so why the fuck does sylvanas who does evil shit on the regular when she has a soul get redeemed if arthas who lost his soul before doing evil shit doesn't?

Also, why in the hell does everyone still blame someone who was literally not in control of his actions?

"So there are people literally mind controlling you and later literally stole your sole, leaving you just a rotting body for them to use their necromancy on, but its still all your fault."

A few possible explanations exist.
Option 1) Saronite captured the lost souls
Option 2) Sylvanus was halucinating nonsense because of the Saronite
Option 3) The Val'kyr created an illusion to weaken Sylvanus so she'd take them in and they could potentially control her.
Option 4) Arthas was being punished at least temporarily for the shit he did BEFORE turning.
>>
>>49521171
Arthas, similar to other intelligent Scourge generals, isn't 100% mind controlled like a zombie. Getting his soul taken means he's under LK's influence, aka a voice in his head telling him to be evil against his better judgement. All the nasty shit he did: not healing Muradin, kill his dad, destroy his kingdom, elf genocide, were all suggested to him by the LK, but it's him making the decision to listen to these shitty ideas.

His story basically changed from him wanting power to protect his people to wanting power because he wants to be best king. It's never explained, but I think during the months of wandering in Northrend after killing Mal'ganis, Nerzul kinda meme'd him to the point where he thinks ruling over mindless undead subjects > living assholes that might disagree with you. That pretty much kickstarted his betrayal and him getting more and more evil to convince himself he's doing the right thing.

>>49521171
Double hell isn't real,it's just the Val'kyr fucking with Sylvannas so she accepts their deal.

Probably it then.

>or Azeroth herself

>>
>>49525550
All right then. Naxxramas was the first target. When they got there, it was long abandoned and damaged from previous battles, so it went down in one shot from their main weapon (reverse engineered Apexis laser modified and upgraded with the help of Mimiron's copy and powered by a miniature Sunwell, they called it the Solar Lance).

They decided to continue to Icecrown, to try that thing on a tougher target before they take it to a real fight with Legion. While the players know OOC about the stuff that happened in the game, the characters are unaware about a lot of things, like the new Lich King. So they expected to find Icecrown Citadel empty, maybe with some uncontrolled undead leftovers milling about, in other words, an easy target.

What they found was the Citadel itself, numerous and obviously well-equiped and organised army of undead, and two active necropoli (finished Malykriss and Acherus). That was a problem: as far as the characters knew, Lich King was destroyed years ago, most of the Scourge with him, and surviving remnants outside Northrend were disorganised and infighting. If the Lich King was still alive, or there was another power in control of the Scourge, the Legion isn't the only threat Azeroth faces, and nobody but them knows about this danger hidden on the frozen continent. But they were reasonably sure of their overwhelming firepower, so they decided to negotiate first (as Acherus was supposed to be neutral).

There they found the first problem with their flying fortress: it lacks any good means to communicate with outside world. They've got few goblin radios, and some magic communications, but neither of those works without reciever on the other side. And none of them (well, almost none) was willing to go outside and talk to the huge undead army personally. So they did what any proper Blood Elf would do (at least according to party paladin) if they found the Lich King may still be alive: They shot first.
>>
>>49525828
Sylvanas has already died three times
Arthas killed her, She comiteed suicide after his death, Shotgun to the back of the head
>>
>>49525979
Malykriss took a direct hit from the Solar Lance, yet survived, though with heavy damage. The weapon take some time to recharge, and the asorted undead immediately responded to the attack and attacked. The battle was in players favor: undead on the ground couldn't reach the flying fortress, and could easily be destroyed from the air, and while gargoyles are dangerous to ground forces, gryphon/dragonhawk/wyvern riders and flying machines, they are much less effective against heavily armored flying castle bristling with enough dakka to impress an ork. Only danger were the two necropoli, and one of them was already damaged. Or so they thought.

As expected, gargoyles stood no chance against cannons, rockets, smaller solar lasers and arcane turrets serving as point defenses and majority of weapons. Then, Acherus opened fire... and the players were shown another Sunfury's weakness: While the Sunfury itself is heavily warded against damage, the same isn't true about the crew. Massive blast of shadow energy hit the ship, killing pretty much everyone in the affected section and turning them into undead. Now, normal zombies, skeletons or ghouls would be no match for 3 level 16 characters, remaining crewmembers and various golems aboard, so I've decided to have them keep their levels (or rather, NPC stats, 5e). Undead mages and (blood) knights were a different problem altogether. To make the things worse, affected section lost its gunners, thus making the Sunfury susceptible from gargoyle attack from at least one direction. It could be worse if they went with the original design, the Sunfury was supposed to be round, as most belf buildings, but I've advised the players (through a goblin NPC) to go with Reneissance star fort-like shape. In the end, the ship was shaped like eight-point star, so the next two prongs could cover the hit part... still, the defense wasn't perfect, and the undead noticed it and focused their attack there.
>>
>>49526377
Players tried to turn the Sunfury around to keep the damaged part away from the necropoli, thus seeing another weakness of their ship: it's horribly clumsy. Necropolis isn't the fastest or most maneuverable flying thing ever, but even then, Acherus could run circles around the larger fortress.

Battle continued for some time. Players were busy with the undead aboard, while the Solar Lance slowly charged for another shot, battle outside was pretty much just a cutscene. Acherus apparently couldn't use their necromantic weapon too often either. The players could charge their weapon faster, but I warned them that it could damage or destroy it, as it hadn't time to cool down. They decided to wait, but use it immediately if Acherus hit them with another blast.

Even with the loses they took, it was pretty clear they could win this fight. That's when the things got much more interesting.

3 Legion battleships ported in. Their goal was similar to the players', destroying the Lich King before he could be a threat to their plans. They were surprised to find themselves in the middle of battle, and the Sunfury was something new, but their enemies were busy with each other, so they attacked anyway.

The Sunfury was protected against fel fire weapons of the battleships, and it had wards preventing the demons from just teleporting aboard (unlike Malykriss and Acherus, which got their portion of fun). The undead immediately ceased their attacks against Sunfury and focused on demons. Players had a short tactical conferrence and decided that the demons are greated threat, and too changed their targets from undead (besides those aboard the Sunfury). This time, they scrambled their complement goblin fighter planes.

Again, battle was mostly cutscene happening in background. While demons couldn't teleport their forces inside the Sunfury, they could get them on its surface, and the demons started to attack the hull to get inside.

That led to a fun three-way battle between undead, demons and the players' crew of elves and golems (and the player characters themselves). Solar Lance charged and one-shoted one of Legion battleships. The other two ships gained an altitude to protect themselves from another attacks, as the weapon is on the underside of the Sunfury, intended to be used against ground targets and can't hit anything above the ship. Demons aboard Sunfury were finally defeated, one of the demon battleships was damaged by the combined attacks of undead, Acherus and smaller weapons from Sunfury and its fighters.

With Sunfury safe, players decided to go on the offensive and teleported aboard the remaining battleship. More battles with demons as they fought to disable the ship. They met bunch of death knights from Acherus who too attacked the ship (though they flew to it on skeletal gryphons and got inside through a hole in the hull instead of teleporting), resulting in tense negotiations to explain what the hell is going on with the Ebon Blade, about Bolvar and the undead army gathered to fight the Legion. They joined forces, though the two factions were wary of each other. Together, they managed to kill the demon commanding the battleship, and damage controls enough that it started to fail. With no other way out (the wizard used most of his spells in the battle), they had to run together with the DKs to escape on their mounts before the whole battleship exploded.

DK's dropped them back on the Sunfury (and they luckily weren't shot down by overeager gunners in the process). After that, it was easy to rise above the damaged and immobilised Legion ship and finish it with Solar Lance.

With demons defeated and the undead presence explained, the characters negotiated with the Ebon Blade some more, though not in person, one of the mage crewmembers created an illusion to talk with them from a distance, and the Death Knights used a voice amplification spell to shout back at them.
>>
So you can keep a void lord from exploding from a Naruu by using a giant fel mech.
>>
>>49527445
So, it ended up well. Both sides suffered loses and the players set a course to Quel'thalas for repairs and to replace dead crewmembers. They got relatively intact Fel Reaver (as in, it's in one piece, though it's got a lot more holes than the original designers intended). I wonder what they'll do with it, they got access to Legion stuff while they were building the Sunfury, but wisely decided to not mess with it. They also discovered few weaknesses of their ship: 1. lack of good communication with the outside, 2. wards don't protect the crew (this will be relevant when they encounter more insidious demons like Kil'Jaeden), 3. due to massive size, their ship is slow and extremely clumsy, meaning that 4. having Solar Lance able to hit only targets below the Sunfury could be a problem and 5. Legion will propably use the tactic of teleporting demons on the surface of the ship in the future, wards don't stop that.

There's not much that they could do about all that except 1., with Legion invasion in progress, they don't have time to upgrade their magic defenses, and they can't do anything about maneuverability or Solar Lance without major redesign of the whole ship.

It's been a learning experience for me too: I really should stat that thing out, as this sort of battles will be more common in the future, and I can't fight them through the power of DM fiat alone. On that note, anyone knows about a good system for (space)ship battles? 5e D&D compatible ideally, to have it usable by my players, but anything would work, I have no problem with learning new systems and I suspect I'll do the mechanical part on my own behind the scenes, while players will only care about their actions and commanding the whole thing without the boring details.

Never. Arthas was at his best when the lines between him and Ner'zhul were blurred. So, really, the only time he was cool was the very end of WC3: TFT.

The Lich King is only interesting when he's a distant mastermind manipulating mortals, demons, and undead, like chess pieces to carry out his will from half-way across the world.

Arthas becoming the Lich King was a mistake.

There were no story development with the Scourge during BC. Why would the draenei, one of the least populous race of warcraft, fight a war half way across the world, getting 0 credit and accomplish nothing when they've got the Legion to deal with.

The only interaction between any draenei and pre Wrath Scourge is PC leveling in the plaguelands. But your PC cant die.

Also, DK arent zombies, only the best stocks gets to be risen as DK, making it even less likely for that 1 or 2 lost draenei explorers to become the thousands of ded GOATs we see today.

It's pretty fun. You get to use the same abilites Illidan does in the actual bossfight, and the "players" are from guilds named after actual famous guilds (like Seriously Casual instead of Casually serious). Some of them are NPCs that have appeared in previous quests, or have had items named after them.

Although my inner autist would complain about one of the "players" having Illdan's warglaive (despite Illidna obviously being alive, and them even yelling "first!" when he dies, implying that was supposed to the world-, or at least server-first kill) and there being raid markers on the ground (we didn't have those in TBC, we had to either use smoke charges or Archmage Vargoth if we wanted to mark a location).

I actually managed to wipe the raid, but you can't beat Maiev, and once you die some of the raiders soulstone/battleres.
>>
>>49534729

>>49536013
Those Orcs made their choices when they double dipped into the Kool-Aid. Illidan was doing them a kindness by giving them a purpose greater than themselves.

For real though. I'm fine if Blizzard want to say "Illidan was always looking at the big picture. He's always wanted to stick it to the big man in the sky". My issue comes when we're meant to accept and be totally okay with every action he made being 100% justifiable and being proven to be the right choice. We met Illidan as a dick, he did dickish things to save himself. Sure he might've now saved himself to keep fighting the good fight, but he was always a dick.

Oh, I agree with you. I'm fine with Illidan being portrayed as a "by any means necessary" character. Just, yeah, not him being portrayed as some innocent martyr.

It's weird because, even going by current lore, both seem to be getting pushed. The Illidan novel showed him to be pretty morally questionable and egotistical, and the return of Altruis in the Demon Hunter story kinda supports the idea that although Illidan DOES have good intentions, he's not necessarily a good person.

But X'era is pushing Illidan to be the universe's biggest victim. Makes me wonder if there's something up with X'era, since she's really the only source of that perspective (aside from the sycophants in the Illidari).

Well, at this point, if X'era isn't captaining the SS Ruse Cruise and isn't really Kil'Jaeden in disguise, it will be extremely disappointing writing.
Because that's the only way Blizzard can really save itself now is by having all the Illidan dick slobbering that X'era is doing be just a lie to trick us into moving all the pieces into place.
Like those whispers that hint that the five Pillars of Creation are a trap. And the screen cap of "something dark" being inside Illidan that shows up in the Giul'dank fight.
>>
>>49537196
Wonder if Gul'dan would pull a Xavius/Cho'gal and switch over to Team Old Gods if the Legion invasion gets repelled.

>>49537069
Yeah, the direction they're going with Illidan is just odd. Him going crazy and turning into a raidboss in TBC also came kind of out of nowhere, but he's always been an antihero. He might have a goal that's technically good (like "Fuck the Legion"), but he doesn't give a shit about collateral damage or the means needed to reach that goal. Turning him into some kind of half-demon Jesus who's the chosen messiah who saves use all and can do no wrong doesn't at all fit his characterization.

X'era being manipulated or being q manipulator is really the only thing I can figure because, like I said, she/it is really the only thing portraying Illidan as some kind of innocent messiah outside of the Illidari. Both the Illidan novel and some aspects of Legion agree with Illidan being someone with good intentions, but corrupt methods.
>>
>>49537734
Even the Illidari are less portraying Illidan as some innocent messiah, than about him being right (ie. the shit he did was necessary to fight the Legion). Even then Kayn admits that Illidan was struggling to remain in control of his demonic energy and his mind was showing signs of slipping. Unlike Altruis, however, he believed Illidan could remain in control of himself.

Altruis seriously fucked up, though. It's entirely his fault that the guy you fight to get the Havoc artefact serves the Legion (he was actually that on belf DH Altruis sends you to kill in TBC, and after he died the Legion got hold of his soul and Kil'jaeden convinced him to switch sides by showing how he was betrayed by one of his own). Considering the guy is responsible of killing most of the demon hunters that managed to avoid getting captured by Maiev, as well as killing several more during the Legion's attack on the Vault of the Wardens, and also led the Legion's invasions on multiple worlds, that's a pretty bad thing on his resume.

So that titans(if there were any on the planets) to mature faster.

I was probably wrong though.
The stars aren't filled with dwarves.
Since by the time they got to azeroth they first made a failed attempt and made troggs, then they went on to dwarves.

If they ordered any planets after azeroth they could've added dwarves to them though.

So, assuming that the Horde and Alliance were to wrap up whatever threats to Azeroth there might be within a decade or so in setting and then made peace that wouldn't get broken because plot reasons, how long do you lot think it would take for the setting to achieve comparable tech/cities/quality of life to the irl western world?

They already have gunpowder and steam engines, but because of magic, generally low and routinely decimated population and prevalence of a quasi-feudal system, it's difficult to implement technology that would exceed anything they can't do without mages or will need in absence of highly pooulated market economy.

I think the canon answer is, like in D&D, player characters make magic seem more commonplace than it actually is in lore. Average village in Westfall doesn't have dozens of mages, warlocks and priests running around... and spellcasters in cities that do have that much of them have better things to do... unless that city is named Silvermoon or Dalaran.

In the old fluff, before Chronicles, the Eredar were already evil. They were one of the races, along with the Pit Lords, who were so cruel and sadistic that they were part of what pushed ol' Sargeras over the edge into insanity.
Still, it seems that Eredar were/are blue naturally, but fel magic creates a rainbow of colors(including other shades of blue) as they get corrupted.

Shasadow? Sure, both figuratively (Black dragon) and literally (Old God/Void corruption of the eggs originally used to create his).

But, Light? He was purified by Titan technology found in the Badlands, and Titan stuff, as far as I know (and according to Chronicle V. 1), is based off Arcane magic, not the Light. I don't think it fits that well, personally.

I'm kind of annoyed he was such a bitch about it, but I'm glad dealing with them was finally over. They were good friends for a few years, but I'm not going to turn what little vidya I do play into a job. Having way more fun RPing with my other friends and progressing at my own pace.

Also decided to go Death Knight with my alt (now main) and couldn't be happier with that choice. Fun to RP and play with in general, and the story was pretty enjoyable too.
