You realize there is nothing negative with this right? They aren't moving the good cards up a rarity, they are basically putting random $100 bills in a few packs.

Even if you don't care about these and don't want them, you greatly benefit, as people will buy boxes to open masterworks, dropping the prices of all other non-masterwork cards drastically.

This is basically making standard cheaper while also providing awesome pimp cards.

Ah, I get the idea there, most of it comes to which cards would be the most interesting way for me to do that.

It's one of those conundrums where I want to play the game for fun, but I'd also like to win enough to make playing worth the while. It feels like the two ideas are mutually exclusive without a severe investment in power cards.

>>49322198

Well, guess I can get these to fill out my Lorwyn/Shadowmoor playsets a bit more. Painters Servant is... usable.... but the best uses I've seen for it have been 'in block'.

They should have thrown in 'mind stone' just to make people cry when they pull it.
>>
>>49322390
If it were anything but this super secret foil mythic slot, like the same odds as a foil rare, I'd be hype. But as things stand it smacks too much of marketing to feel "genuine".
>>
>>49322210
There is a negative. They have to keep the price point down on the rest of the set to equal it out. So you get less bombs just fom the point of development trying to cut costs.
>>
>>49322784
... That's goddamn terrible advice. Not everyone wants to play Fuck You Control.
>>
>>49322309
Buddy, did you not read the announcement?

EVERY STANDARD SET is going to have Masterpiece Series cards.
>>
>>49323636
>They have to keep the price point down on the rest of the set

You don't understand how EV works.
These cards existing will by THEMSELVES push down the price of the rest of the set, because the value in the set should be concentrated in the prices of these artifacts, rather than the Standard playable bombs.
>>
>>49322210
I prefer new sets to "fly off of the shelves" because they have good and interesting cards in them, not because packs contain a lottery ticket.

Sadly, people proved that they were willing to buy BFZ (the worst set in recent memory) in record numbers thanks to expeditions.

If this is the norm, then what incentive does WotC have to make well designed cards?
>>
>>49322090
This is fucking awful
>>
>>49323687
This, no more gimmicks to sell sets, no more crutches, make good cards and people will buy them without this lottery ticket bullshit
>>

>>49323655

>>
They should have really left the border line on these cards. The obviously cut off parts on both sides of the frame are really jarring to look at. Otherwise most of these are 10/10, I'm definitely picking up Crucible and Sol Ring for my pimped out EDH deck.
>>
>>49323736
>>49323687
But Kaladesh looks like a good set. Fun limited structure, some clearly powerful cards that might have meaning in eternal formats. Neat art, clear and mechanically interesting rules.
What more do you want? It might not be an Innistrad 1.0, but Inn2 wasn't terrible so this is definitely up from BFZ.
>>
>>49322001
Looks like a mechon from xenoblade
>>
>>49323884
Call me crazy, but I generally wait for the full spoiler before judging a set. We may have seen everything it has to offer already.
>>
>>49323687
A bunch of other people have said it, but Kaladesh looks good so far, not KTK levels of good, but leagues above the shit that was BFZ.

A bunch of fun mechanics, a handful of powerful cards already, these masterworks are great icing. The only issue is that, with how much I draft I just know I'm going to have to play against a sol ring eventually, and I'll want to kill myself even if I'm the one playing it.
>>
>>49323757
>>49323764
>>49323884
If the numbers for a good set with expeditions is the same as numbers for a bad set with expeditions then why would they bother putting effort into making the set when they can just put these ultra rare cards in them and have the same result?
>>
>>49323907
Fair. Personally I think this ghost rare expeditions stuff is vulgar money-grabbing nonsense, and I'm worried about coming up against something atrocious like a sol ring or sword in limited.

>>49323926
>why would they bother putting effort into making the set

Despite recent evidence we can assume that there are people thinking about the state of Magic as a whole and its future. They have a clear acquisition plan, and I think some of this plan is to ... lubricate the secondary market with some additional value. This makes the idea of buying into a game which has a reputation for being expensive a little bit more interesting if there are hundred dollar notes in packs.

Man some kids are going to get ripped the fuck off.
>>
>>49323924
I believe some anons did the math and each specific, individual masterpiece appears something like 1 in every 4000 packs. So, at 24 packs per draft, Sol Ring is probably going to appear in 1 in every 800 drafts. For you to get screwed by Sol Ring, your opponent also has to have it by turn 3ish, which means it has to be in the top quarter of their deck after shuffling. Basically, using flimsy math with a lot of shortcuts, your chance of being screwed by Sol Ring specifically is >0.1%. Even taking into account all the powerful, draft warping masterpieces, it still probably will affect less than 1% of all draft pods.
>>
>>49323926
If fishing for expeditions becomes the only reason to open packs the value of packs will drop too much for opening them to be profitable.
>>
>>49322187
>on loan from a private collection
Holy flavor win, tezzeret got the mox opal
>>
>>49323995
Oh, I understand that, but I draft new sets usually 100 times; if I love them a lot more and if I don't I'll still usually get around 20-30 in to give it a fair go. I certainly don't think it's outside the realm of possibility, and I pray it won't, getting fucked in that way feels fucking awful.
>>
>>49323636
Are you high? Do you think it's more expensive to print powerful cards?

>>49322230
Honestly, I see this card being the most sought after card from this set... even over Mana Crypt. Sol Ring will sell the fuck out of this pack based on bling alone, easily the best looking of these cards art wise, better then even Hangerback and Mana Crypt. While I guess Crypt is more valuable and better, this will be the card that will stand the test of time. We are looking at the best of the best for EDH bling right there... Most of these are ugly. Crowded and gaudy with that stupid 80% opacity frame, and most of the arts don't fit the card. Painter's Servant, Mana Vault, Hangarback and the green and black Gearhulks are nice. The rest are middling to outright ugly. Most of them are also inferior to normal set foils or promos already available I'd rather have a judge promo Sol Ring, foil Scars Opal or Dark )steel Aether Vial than a Cardfight Vanguard-tier masterpiece of kitsch.

This is unrelated to ghost rares but Vryn's Prodigy is mediocre. Not bad, but not exceptional. Everyone started jamming it in Modern and Legacy until they realized it's underwhelming, but these Open grinders at my store scoffed at me the other night when I opined that it was overrated. They said it was amazing, which is why it shows up in an occasional list of an underperforming deck, right?

Fuck I hate that shit. The results aren't there but because all the "pro" outlets hyped it up they're STILL buying into it. Why are grinders so bad?
>>
>>49325067
how so
>>
>>49325097
The odds of this impacting a draft are miniscule and box prices dont work like that .

As for everything else; you play eternal, you knew going in it was yaht racing
>>
>>49325121
Not him, but are you seriously suggesting that they aren't?

I mean, fuck. I can't even read half of them without laughing at how stupid they are.
>>
>>49325386
Wha the problem?

They are like the little blurbs you would expect at an inventors fair.
>>
I wish we could get them without the foil. Shinyness distracts from the art
>>
>>49325067
>The entire set is themed as an inventors fair
>The masterpieces are artistically designed to envoke the idea of submissions into the grand contest.
>Flavor texts are blurbs that describe these artifacts just as they would at an actual fair.
>They are the most favorable things in the entire set.
>"there cringe worthy reeeeee"

Holy shit you have no concept of flavor or card design...
>>
>>49325386
Uncultured swine that you are, you seem to miss the fact that this is the presentation of items at an inventors' faire
>>
>>49322166
im still secretly hoping for a reprint in the actual set. but seeing it in the masterpieces kinda kills that
>>
>>49327789
>>49325451
The presentation is exactly the problem.
>>

How

Does printing big money legacy/modern/EDH cards

ONLY

Help standard

?
>>
>>49322079
>>49322041
Anyone have the art alone for these? The cards are never well sized and always ruin the picture clarity.
>>
>>49328226
These cards are printed in such small numbers that they won't affect the prices of other printings of them.
>>
>>49328226

Because their purpose isn't to increase the supply of these cards. The amounts being printed are so minuscule that they will do literally nothing to decrease prices.

The point is to increase the amount of boxes being opened by having people chase these cards will substantially increase the supply of the cards that are ACTUALLY in the set
>>
>>49328226
These cards are now the automatic money cards people will crack for. There small numbers mean that the normal cards will be extremely abundant. These cards will become very cheep as every store and online vendor has hundreds of them. These masterpieces will be in every set forward this means standard legal cards will become cheep as FUCK.

These reprints unfortunately are not printed in great enough numbers to impact the demand for them. In fact the are so rare they are basically a completely different product. People want the new mana crypt to put in their NO TRADE binder next to their old mana crypt. Everyone that wants one to play the game wont be able to afford them. Many times these kinds of reprints even somehow mange to INCREASE the price of the original prints.

Then we have limited. These cards are legal in all sealed environments. This means limited will now be even more luck based than before. What happens if in the next masterpieces they print "Delver of Secrets"? Or some other broken card? There will be drafts that get utterly dominated by those cards.
>>
>>49328717
They were once in Limited formats as well. It's not worse than any other mythic.
>>
>>49327842
Good lord, you're a faggot;

>>49328717
>Many times these kinds of reprints even somehow mange to INCREASE the price of the original prints.
That's true for cards that's see play as four offs. For example, Tarmogoyf in Modern and Legacy. The reason, seemingly being, that there's a whole bunch of people who would like to build, for example, Modern Jund or Abzan but have neglected to do so because Goyf is so expensive. When they open one Goyf their immediate reaction isn't to sell it for profit but rather 'oh boy, now I only need three more!'
>>
>>49328717
>What happens if in the next masterpieces they print "Delver of Secrets"?
Absolutely nothing. Delver isn't particularly good in limited.
>>
The amount of shilling this shit set is getting is unbelievable

>I'M LOSING MY MIND AT THIS FREAKING ART, PEOPLE FREAK OUT WITH ME.

That's literal tumblr talk, you don't belong here.
>>
okay.
I'm excited.
>>
>buy a case
>get a gearhulk
i cant wait
>>
>>49330327
>buy a case
>get a case full of randomized Magic cards

What did you expect?
>>
>>49329043
>tumblr existed before an interest solely in the art of something

gee whiz I didnt know they had Tumblr in the fucking renaissance
>>
>>49322001
Thanks Wizards I'm out of your moneygrabbing pay to win game - now I have tons more money to spend on Warhammer!
>>
>>49322187

>>
>>49322001
>Walker over Ravager

>>
>>49322001
>013/054

Is there more to be spoiled or is the rest for future sets?
>>
>>49329043
tumblr already invaded with all these "cringes" being dropped here and there
>>
>>49334050

So does this mean I have to buy a box for Kaldesh?

Does this also mean theres a good chance the box will pay for itself?
>>
>>49336901
no. but a case might
>>
When did fucking Correct the Record start playing Magic?
>>
So are these standard legal?
>>
>>49336936
No, they are however legal at draft night
>>
>>49322006
>caged sun, but cheaper
Oh wow
>>
>>49337805

>all players
>>
>>49322662
fat cunt
>>
>>49336901
Not all boxes can pay for themselves. That's just how economics works. If box value was higher than a box's cost, people would just buy every box until prices dropped.
>>
>>49337805
Like, it's not a new card you know.
>>
>>49322248
I wish this one had flavour text.
I've always wanted to know why the robot is sad.
>>
>>49325386
I'm sorry you hate fun. Maybe you should stop playing a children's card game if magicbabble and pretty art doesn't interest you and make you feel happy in your inside parts.

>>49328935
As a faggot, don't compare me to anon.
>>
>>49322001
SoFF has the best art of the set
