Science! Edition
We must become cozier Sub-Edition
I can see the embers of the Inferno coming. We helped an Anon with choosing her legion and discussed the Red Scorpions(unknown if our SJW rubbed one off during that time period), Geneviève's death has an affect, we learned about the wonders of CFT and FOOP, test engineers are not immune to CFT so please remember that, talk on STCs was made, and we discovered an Ordo Reductor cogboy living amongst us displaced through time plus much more in the last bread >>49298431

>>49316654

Dunno, depends on the objective. Wasn’t it to start the Ruinstorm and cut off most of the remaining loyalist legions from Terra? That was successful. They killed at least 40% of the Ultramarines, without losing that many of their own.

I suspect Lorgar thought of it as a throw-away force, otherwise he would’ve reinforced Kor Phaeron and friends himself and brought World Eater support too. It sounds like he sent all of his less-reliable commanders on crazy missions with a high potential payoff.

lol people actually think Calth was an UM victory? 50k of the worst WBs utterly wrecked the ultras, killed over 100k marines, almost half the legion, millions of human soldiers, trapped some 40k more on calth, destroyed the world, summoned the ruinstorm and basically made the ultras sit at home for the rest of the heresy not doing anything except LARP being the Imperium

the only reason they managed to survive is because they put some mechanicum chick in the USB slot to upload an antivirus

and that's not even going into the rest of the shadow crusade where the WBs and WE utterly annihilated any opposition the ultras threw at them

ultramarines are probably the worst legion in 30k from a fluff pov, iirc book 5 says that they take high casualties if they can't outnumber the enemy, they are basically the zerg legion

I can't see the issue: Both the UM and the WB tied at Calth.
The WB wasn't allowed to delete them, so they went for the next best thing: to stall them.
And the UM wouldn't die because they were too many, even against two whole legions, both of which were big and one of them had 40 years to prepare.

If anything, the only one who lost was the Imperium as Guilliman decided to dig in, and the only one who won was Sanguinius, who proved the Ruinstorm was a load of bullshit and still arrived to Terra in time.

It's kinda funny that the three loyalists on the Vengeful Spirit were emperors at some time.

>Dorn, Emperor of the Inwit cluster

>Sanguinius, Imperator Regis of the Imperius Secundus

>The Emperor, Emperor of the Imperium and father of Raven Raven and Iron Hands of the Iron Hands.

There was no internal dialogue with Dorn, everything was seen from another persons perspective and guess what, the man of stone lives up to his name. He barely talks and shows little to no emotion.

The dude feels, his astropath sees the complexity of a single emotion going through his mind and sees he has a deeper understanding of emotions and all its variety. But he doesn't show it.

I liked the interaction between him and Alpharius after a particular compliance. It shows he understand were his brother is coming from and doesn't distain his tactics, so far as telling him how they could have worked better in tandem leading to the planet being much less bitter in joining the Imperium all the while letting Alphy do what he's great at. His only qual was that Alphy went out of his way to ruin the ruling cast, something that will come back to bite them in the ass later.

I'm not saying the book was amazingly great, it has it's short comings, but it's hella lot better than what's been put out recently.

Lightning tower was the best story featuring Dorn and is filled with him actually shows what he's thinking which was great because we see what fundamentally seperates him form pert.
>>
>>49317373
And we all know what Alpharius told Dorn. Why else would he only answer his hiuscarl with "lies, only lies." It was obvious Alph wanted to show Dorn his true colors.

But they were already at home, anon. And I did say they could have won (by killing Guilliman), but weren't allowed, so they settled for the next best thing, which was actually better on the broader picture, but the fact that they lost a Death Star commanded by Mr. Ham himself kinda substracts a few points.

One of my favorite moments from any BL books came from their first novel.

It was right before they started to torpedo themselves onto the Ad Mech ship. There's this cog boy being brought to the front. He was excited because he was equipped with a haywire grenade launcher and he'd be useful in the upcoming battle. Went on for about 2 pages...

Then the soul drinkers attacked and everything went to shit.

I don't think it works like that. A single Lacyraemarta (shouldn't it be Lacryaemarta? "Lacrima" is latin for "tear") Techpriest unit upgrades Revenant Thralls to FnP 4+.

I don't know what to think of FW's responses. I once asked them if Decima could use his Retinue rule to bring a Techpriest unit and then add his 5 Servoautomata to the unit, and they told me not only that couldn't be done, but also that Decima's Servoautomata could be kited like regular Techpriest's servs, but his' could also buy Tank Hunter at 20pts per mini or something like that.

Weird responses, I tell you.

Also saw a dragon like cloud, or it was suppose to be Italy. I think it's a sign from the Emperor meaning that all Italians got wiped out in the future by dragons. I guess that would make sense considering pic related. Might also be every Iron Warriors/World Eaters/Word Bearers military campaign.

There's a new game store that just moved in to town, so I'll have to check them and see if they have better prices than the GW by my house. They're the ones that supposedly have a good 30k scene too so that's where I'd be playing.

Perturabo ceased being our lord when he casted his lot with the traitors.
It doesn't hurt to be conscious of your own mortality, despite being able to watch centuries come and go.
It's common sense to feel no remorse as a warrior, and to be ready to spend your life and your brothers' lives for the Imperium.

It's even understandable to seek redemption for your mistakes, but in all cases, you must always ask yourself if the outcome is worth the life-price you'll end up paying.

The Emperor is lord of all, nothing else matters.

You can get two Arlatax and change for the cost of that many Ursarax, and S9 Shred or s7 armourbane on a jetpack MC is amazing, and gets way, way better when you add in Cybernetica bonuses for striking before marines. If your meta favours MSU marine tactics then the ursarax might fit better. In either case, Vorax are more points-efficient than either at mulching marines, but lack the power to pop AV14.

So why is rotor cannon so weak ? Did they needed a cheap but weak heavy weapon to contrast the stronger, more expensive ones or was it something else ? Do you even see them used on the table ?

It shouldn't have an autogun statline just as a heavy bolter doesn't have the same stats as a bolter - it's a minigun, it has different ammunition, etc. It should probably be something like S4 AP5 - keep the salvo profile and the range to not make it an auto include but deserves a buff.
>>
>>49323657

6 shots like an Assault Cannon would go a long way to fixing things. It's the home rule I use.
>>
>>49323657
So, Salvo 3/4 bolters? I think it should have some for of Rending.
>>
>>49323683
it should fire standard bolter shells (with maybe access to special ammo) and be salvo 4/6
>>
>>49323641
1) Dorn said he could tell which one was Alpharius before he even entered the room but then couldn't tell Alpharius was under a tarp in the imperial palace ergo Dorn is not a reliable source for confirming his identity.

2) The ridiculous end game of Alpharius' gambit was to have a pow wow with Dorn? The only scenario in which Alpharius' actions make sense is faking his own death to fool Omegon.

3) It's Black Library. They can and will retcon it if someone pitches it right.
>>
>>49323657
Give it rending I think would fix it, making the thing a low fat assault cannon. They are still just stubbers at the end of the day so shouldn't have the strength or AP of bolt weapons. Also allow them access to the Poisoned rounds used by the mechanicus

>>49323913
Rending is only ever good on things with high RoF, and 40 rending shots is insane-it would kill five terminators as easily as five marines. Either make it 2/3 rending with a short range ( with salvo, 12/18") or just make it salvo 4/8 for the Death by a Thousand Cuts
>>
>>49323845
Ok, you got me on the wording. A minigun is described as a multi-barreled machinegun too, but it still doesn't fire rifle ammunition. Also isn't a stubber S4 in the first place ? Doesn't that mean the rotor cannon should be S4 in the first place ?

Stubbers, autoguns and similar are all s3. Modern-level weapons, as seen in Militia and Cults, are 18" S3 Assault 1 AP-
>>
>>49323913
Rending is too good to make it free. Keep it's price or give it better S and AP instead of rending to stop it from being auto-include.

Just making it free without change in the stats wouldn't help much as well, as making a bad weapon free won't encourage people to take it if they can pay 5-10 points for a better gun that is of actual use.

Source me that, then? I've read most things about them, as far as i can tell, and its never been stated as anything. Whereas the Silver Skulls use very similar tactics to the IW, use the exact same iconography and came into being just after the heresy, when it is outright stated that loyalist traitors were re-integrated into chapters the same as everyone else.

I don't particularly mind that Alpharius is dead (just confused since there seems to be a lot of loose plot threads because of that), but isn't it still possible for him to come back to life in some ways?

Aside from the gene tech they stole from the Raven Guard (if BL haven't forgotten about that plot point), couldn't Chaos just straight up resurrect him? I mean it wasn't like he was favored by any of the gods (as far as we know, I think Tzeentch would have really appreciated him), but I'd think they would still like as many Primarchs on their side as possible. Plus him being brought back by Chaos and possibly corrupted by them would explain some of the actions of the Alpha Legion in recent 40k.

Because they released a LOT of "exclusive" short stories, and they want to sell those to the people that didn't buy them when they were "limited".

Studs are armour reinforcements, not a hallmark of any particular mark. Theyre called molecular bonding studs and get added where needed. Even dreadnoughts can have them.

Their objectives were two part; one was to start the Ruinstorm; true; but the second one was to destroy the Ultramarines and kill Guilliman.

With literally ALL of the advantages they still only accomplished one; butchered two and lost literally their entire force; which was basically half of their legion.

It's a testament to their shitiness

>>
>>49328608
It was hardly just Guilliman. El'Johnson had relieved Russ and the Wolves from their hunters and Dark Angels were at that point perhaps the only mostly intact legion, except for Luther's sedition. So yeah, I'd say the prospect of facing the Wolf and the Lion at the same time was worse than facing the Emperor to Horus.

I think it was more that Horus' forces were already somwhat expended, speciall with all the Emperor's Children running off to do naughty things with the citizens of Terra in adittion to the loyalist sackers showing up that made him decide to take that huge gamble. It also appears that the Thousand Sons have been retconned out of the Siege of Terra, so even more of a disadvantage

>Just because Silver Skulls look aesthetically like loyal Iron Warriors doesnt mean they are.

The founder of the Silver Skulls wore an iron mask that he never took off. The Iron Warrior who joined the Ultramarines to help bolster the defense of Ultramar and assist their legion to better learning siege warfare wore an iron mask that he could not take off. That Iron Warrior (goddammit I can't remember his name) formally joined the Ultramarines after the personal invitation of RG, who told him he was welcome to lead his own special task force to further capitalize on his strengths.

>>
>>49331101
No, if you have to fire below minimum range with a barrage weapon, you MUST direct-fire the weapon, so you need los and calculate wounds from the front of the targeted unit instead of from the center of the blast. Basically, any shot taken below minimum range ignores the barrage rule entirely.
>>
>>49331173

Minimum range indeed only matter for targets you cannot see. You can fire just fine at targets within minimum range, as long as you do have LOS.
Wound allocation is however always from the center of the blast, even when firing directly. This is why Barrage weapons are now the best snipers in the GrimDark
>>
>>49331244
A weapon only needs to have the Barrage special rule to be able to fire normally or fire indirectly. In the latter case, you can fire at targets outside LOS but at targets within minimum range

>>
>>49331465
Nope, barrage is the only time wounds are a located from the center. If you want the abstract reasoning, imagine that unless the attack is barrage, it always hits the front, and the blast size determines how many dudes around the first guy also get hit.

I thought Alpharius was torn off by the warp portal, and half of him ended in the tech-planet where the Alpharius half gets fixed and nursed to health, until the xenos attack, eventually becoming a pirate, while the half that remained behind, Omegon, was raised by Emps.

As such, Alpharius would have been fixed using cyberization and prosthetics. That's why "the one on the throne was the largest, and his armour and demeanour screamed that this was a lord of the Alpha Legion... But there was something too blunt about that picture. Archamus had had a fleeting impression of a slight restriction in the way he moved, as though the figure were as much armour and machine as flesh.

And it would be because it was true, at least for Alpharius.

It can best be described as tactically inconclusive but a strategic traitor victory. The traitor plan was for the Smurfs to be completely annihilated, instead Kor'Phaeron was sent running with a hole in his chest and the planet remained part of Ultramar. Also the plan to use the Furious Abyss to destroy Macragge failed.

It's a bit sad, since the Word Bearers had every concievable advantage but still couldn't finish the job. ADB has salvaged it for the Bearers by basically having Lorgar/Erebus not give a damn about any aspect of the battle besides having enough bodies to fuel the ruinstorm

Alpharius was so big that even when split up he became two Primarchs (Alpharius' cybernetics and the Emperor's genecraft on Omegon), and his(their) children's gigantism is explained that way.

He was going to be the T8 Primarch, but got split up and recovered to T6.

It also means he's the Alfa and the Omega, but ironically Omegon was the first Primarch found (because he never left), while Alpharius was the last one. And both kept their identities secret to Horus, who believed himself to be the first Primarch to be found and also thought he knew Alpharius the best.

In Angel Exterminatus he went from:

>Bitterfag who massacres his own men for no reason and joyously betrayed the Emperor for little reason

to

Has been genuinely sidelined while being forced to undertake thankless occupation duties. Betrayed the Emperor because Horus was the only guy who treated him with respect.

Alpharius didn't actually kill the Huscarl commander. He stabbed him in the primary heart with The Pale Spear, but despite that the commander just gets up after a while to try and block one of Big Al's strikes. Emps knew everything. He designed all the primarchs and engineered their fates. Note that Night Lords from Terra had pale skin, were recruited from criminals, and could see better in the dark before Curze had even been found. This is true with all the legions. Weird!

There was always talk about how "nobody could dislike Horus" in the Black Library books (subtle jokes there guys), but I never found him particularly charismatic. Hell Lorgar fit the bill more in that regard in my opinion, his misguided ideal of what Chaos could be actually made me sympathize with the guy even if he was so, so very fucking wrong.
