I like them varied. I know it's a non-answer, but it's the only one I can give.

Some of the beast races are closer to humanity, and some of them are rather more alien or weird in mindset. A dog-person or wolf-person is always going to be more easy to relate for a human than a merfolk. This doesn't mean that there aren't friendships or commerce or the like, though. It just leads to the occassional culture clash.

I do generally have them fairly beastly, though. None of this "dog ears on perfectly human dude" thing. You're an ox-man? Then you're basically a small, swole minotaur, bro. Milk that for all it's worth!

In general, though, I try to make them people. People of varying degrees of weird, but people.

I do them short and cute. Something like 2 or 3.
Started as a background characters. Players were... wary of them, to say the least.

Minimal interaction. Then an NPC companion was introduced. Still a minor role.
Took me one and a half a year but I finally got the fuckers. Players, I mean. One of them is now fine with flirting with them critters.
I am now 100% sure I can manipulate my players' fetishes. I already made one fucker like traps once, I can make the other one like furries.

Personally, I've always felt that it should depend on what the group is comfortable with, and how mature enough you are to not sexualize them like a creep.

Then again, the same could be said for many thi GE inter hobby.

As for My personal tastes, I find furry, mimi, and rubber forehead ayy to be boring. If I'm going to bother putting in non-human races, I want them to actually appear unique and interesting in their own right. Afterall, humans don't look like chimps or bonobos, so why should the races look exactly like either humans or animals?

And that's IF I bother putting in nonhumans in the first place.

There's a whole other scale this picture fails to represent. It's going near maximum cuteness and the furry race at every stage of this only has its features FOR the cuteness. I don't like races that are straight up "A specific animal but like a human", so anything like Dog-people, cat-people etc is out. Lizardmen are usually fine since they seldom are designed after a specific animal. For a mammalian counterpart, wookies are a good example.

I take the George Lucas/Rick & Morty approach to races -- there are a handful of species that you see over and over, like humans, elves, orcs and dwarves, but there's an eclectic mix of other monsters whose species you never learn about, because it would be too time consuming and inappropriate to catalogue them all.

You will never learn why the guy selling you scrolls in the market looks like a giant one-eyed raven in a top hat. He'll be offended if you ask; he looks like a person, and you look like a hairless ape. Fuck you, buy your scrolls elsewhere. Meanwhile there are twelve-legged lizard men, anthropophagi, giant fat walrus-men with fungus growing off of them, and screeching moth monsters that speak only an obscure dialect of Drow Sign Language that you can barely understand -- but you think they'll pay top coin for peaches.

Currently trying to cobble together an empire out of a set of tribes in one of the most inhospitable yet financially lucretive places on the planet.

Remarkable in that they are the only civilized mortal race that doesn't share a common ancestor with humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs so no children, even infertile ones, are possible.

As is the rule with nearly everything here, it's fine until it devolves into magical realm. Are they a legitimate faction with their own form of culture? Do the females look like slightly weaker males and not big-titty'd bimbos? If it feels like magical realm, it probably is.

Lizard is a suborder of reptiles, consisting of thousands of species. Meanwhile, dog refers to a single subspecies of the Canis Lupus species.

Or to look at it another way, you're talking about the difference between basing something on dogs and basing them on Caniforms - which would mean including features from bears, badgers, weasels, red pandas, and otters as well as dogs, foxes, and jackals.

I love beast races! They're fun to include in most games, and I usually have two or three varieties in every fantasy campaign I run. They're just universally evil in my main campaign setting, and not available to PCs. The body and soul are connected in-universe, and permanent physical transformations cause you to lose your 'humanity' and free will. Shape-shifting is likewise very dangerous because you can get stuck with the mind and soul of whatever you turn yourself into. So, the beast races (like kobolds and gnolls) are essentially soulless monsters that follow their base instincts blindly.

I'm not even sure we're discussing the sam thing anymore. Biologically speaking, "Dog" is a single animal, not several. >non-animal beastmen
you mean humans?
>>
>>49307461
Beast folk are born fully-formed out of the earth, deep in wild areas. They are human-sized creatures, walk upright, and have surprisingly human faces, but their bodies are covered in thick animal fur, feathers, or scales. Their hands and feet are replaced with animal claws or hooves, as are their ears, noses, and eyes (their mouths are human-like, but often with pointier or flatter teeth). They may take their heritage from any wild mammal, bird, or four-limbed lizard or amphibian. Beastfolk based on domesticated animals are unheard-of. They are created sterile, unable to reproduce with humans, animals, or even their own kind. They have human intelligence, and are cabable of human speech.

Most are believed to live in the wild, but a some live lonely lived on the outskirts of civilization, and a few are even able to join human society. In rural areas they may be viewed as evil creatures, tricksters, or honored as emissaries of the nature gods. In more civilized lands, they are typically seen as a curiosity, like a runaway circus freak.
>>

Seconded.
I enjoy distilling tropes.
Want a sly energetic merchant that your murder hobos might hesitate to gank?
Look no further than a halfling sized fennec fox man with cooky fox logic themed items and desert garb. They'll take one look at him and think "Arab street hawker, sly, don't let him talk the price up/down and watch my pockets." Weather he is or not players will assume things based on race and aperence. I find this a useful tool for getting the players minds going a certain direction and to make their own assumptions about said npc like they might a person IRL. For me it's sometimes storytelling shorthand for establishing npcs that feel fleshed out even if they just buy potions and a gizmo or two before moving on. I try to make the most of said short lived npcs by giving them enough info to bring them to life without having to wright 10 page backstorys for every tom, dick and harry on the street they may only see once.

Other times I'll deliberately invert or twist said tropes. The cat only seems aloof at first but is actually a pretty chill guy, just picky about his friends. The dog is only as loyal to the paycheck. The fox is actually an idiot but he sure can talk a good game. The ox is a thrill serker and quick to try new things. The serpentlike vissir lurking behind the king truely is the most loyal and trustworthy of his advisors.
It's all about player expectations and beast races or really any race with steriotypes/tropes can be useful tools to that end. I mean how many surly dwarven barkeeps have turned out to have hearts of gold for you?
>>
>>49307461
I'm making a homebrew where there are only 3 humanoid races in the galaxy, and the rest are various forms of sentient megafauna i.e. a slug with fine grasping tentacles, or a jumping spider with chameleon-esque camouflaging abilities. It's generally a good system, combat is quick and brutal and there are tons of ways to build a character, making it one of the better class-less fantasy games. I'd recommend that every character invest in defensive skills and some form of armour, otherwise they'll find themselves wounded or killed very, very quickly. Magic is well-balanced, and I quite like how the healing magic and utility magic works

I recommend that the Dying / Dead / Overkilled damage results be changed unless you want people making new characters frequently. You might want characters to be rendered unconscious but stable in those cases, while still applying the Afraid status to their allies in the case of Overkilled.

Fantastic and foreign creatures.

Personally trying to make beast races more human out of fear of being furry is one way of sexualizing them, since you are making them more sexually appealing to humans.

Obviously when designing a "beast" race it is easy to just pick a human, attach animal parts and call it a day, but there is more interesting things than that. Gait, proportions, posture, dimorphism, size, diet...

>>49312802
I keep getting told by some people I know that it is a good system. I think it is acceptable to just swindle the system if you are not in it for the fluff.

We had one character literally liquefied in the first round of first combat. We usually play lethal shit, so it's not an issue for us, but for more cinematic swashbuckling you need to do some adjustments.

In all variaties, either through good old fashioned evolution, the gods, or a wizard did it. Because we all know wizards have no sense of right or wrong and totally would create as many beast races of all kinds as often as they can, just to see if they can.
Turns out they totaly can, and poor dirtfarmer #124825790 now has to deal with them raiding his lifestock, or his wife and children, or him, or all of those.
Or maybe they turn out friendly and peacefull, turning into poor dirtfarmers themselves while the humans pillage and rape across THEIR lands, as well as MORE beast races created by a completely different wizard because he thought that other wizards idea was AMAZING and he should totaly do that as well.

On a more serious note, I do like all variaties, either an animal was straight up given sapience and the ability to speak, or maybe just sapience, by a god/fate/a dragon/a passing wizard/whatever, they evolved alongside humans and other non-beast races but never outcompeted them, or non-beast races getting changed into more beastial shapes. It's all good in my book.
Maybe the giant talking wolf is just the resident forrest spirit/guardian. Maybe the small ferret-people have rudimentary tools and their own language and look slightly more "human" than regular ones. Maybe there just happens to live a tribe of humans in the treetops as well who were simply given bird wings because they worshipped the bird god/goddes or something.
I like 'em all.

Why am I laughing at this?

On topic, I usually just state that a given person is a catfolk/ lizard/ whatever and leave the details up to my party's imagination. I do the same thing for other people too.

Is minimalism bad?

So riddle me this:
Why do "Alien" humanoids get a pass?
But "Terrestrial" humanoids are unacceptable?

I remember when Bioware fueled some serious cancer with Mass Effect. I also remember people salivating over the aliens and shitting on furries in the same threads.

I don't get it.

I like beastmen Races that are humanoid, but have weird proportions/stances. They also can't have human looking faces, even though they have probably have 2 eyes, a nose and a mouth. Bonus points if they're completely covered in fur, leather or scales. Beastmen aren't supposed to be titillating.

The nu-mou from final fantasy are a good example. The elephant looking aliens from Mass effect are another cool looking race.

For example:
This. Pretty much sums up what I'm talking about.

Whereas if instead of being octopus aliens, if they had fur and muzzles it would be "cancer" that makes people uncomfortable and act weird about it. But sufficiently alien octopus are just funny.

Honestly I don't get the division. It's like Furries are the "Uncomfortable Valley" of attraction, just enough to be strange while still having some universal attraction.

Because of oldfags having PTSD flashbacks to 2008 when furry shitposting was the primary scourge of all the boards, or newfags with autism hating whatever is cool to hate at the moment.

The furry fandom is also a cesspool of autism and drama, so that probably contributes as well.

That alone would not be a sell/nosell point.
It could exacerbate other things, it could make it more appealing, but on its own it's insufficient information.

> fandom is also a cesspool of autism and drama
This describes every fandom ever. Off the top of my head, excluding Mass Effect of course when it was still going, there was a thread over on reddit which therefore is inherently a sampling of Normies voting by popularity of response.

Everything considered "worse" than furries, as in voted higher than furries, is listed in pic related. It's kind of impressive actually.

If PTSD alone were the case, then Normies wouldn't be weirded out either. I've tried to get an Ironclaw game off the ground, but we had the one vehemently "won't touch it with a ten foot pole" who's so anti-furry he mentions furries more than actual furries on a casual basis. The dude is normie as fuck. Then of course we've got the less suspicious persons for whom the Gold Standard of "well at least it's not X" is furries. Not Sonic, not Minecraft, not any Sci-Fi anything, not Steven Universe, and nothing Tumbler-territory. No, the GOLD STANDARD is furries despite the fact the average person these days gets exposed to the aforementioned more than furries on the internet anymore.

Now, the fun thing is I know the suspicious guy probably better than his wife does collecting dirt on people is my hobby, and he's a weirder person than the actual silent furfag in our group. Meanwhile And I'm probably the weirdest pathetic loser of anyone I know because if you leave me alone with your shit I will get into your passworded computer, rip logs of email/browsing, plant keyloggers and screenshot programs, and sniff out written diaries.

Again, none of it makes any fucking sense. I begin to suspect it's just a meme at this point which has hit the social equivalent of the Family Guy effect, whereas normies will treat it in framework of "Ha ha, X, am I right?"

That's fair. Honestly, that's a good answer to hear. Means it'll be judged for its actual merit.

Guillermo del Toro does this, too. We've got a few races, maybe some recognizable ones, and then we have a whole lot of assorted freaks.
>Why does this one asshole's head look like a castle?

>Oh, there's another elf. I know what those look like in this universe.

Ironclaw? K.
I'm not paranoid about magical realms, unlike many others, I'll give a chance to mostly anything
>>
>>49320579
Not quite. It isn't so much, you play as a straight-up furry, but more of, you play beastmen that are typically seen as nameless enemies in other tabletop games.
>>
>>49320569
>That's fucking creepy dude, what the fuck.
You think that's creepy? You should read the shit I find.

"Normies" got some serious fucking skeletons in their closets. The most outstanding guy in our group I've known since before college, is secretly into rape pretty hardcore and stalked the shit out of his wife for years beforehand. He wrote some creepy fucking shit which he never gave her. She has no idea, and now they're married so it doesn't matter. He's a suave and highly social guy IRL, you'd never suspect.

There's a reason I kept tabs on some people.
Otherwise, yes just because I enjoy it.

For a beast race, 3 is the best, with 4 then a close second and third. First is "I'm tired of humans, but deathly afraid someone will call me a furry, which would be THE WORST POSSIBLE THING so tails and ears only haha".

>>49313006
I unironically like that furry's design. It looks like it'd be a mage or alchemist of some type and occasionally set the tip of its tail on fire.

>>49309699
See if you can give one a vore fetish. I honestly don't know how you'd even go about it.

>>49320215
Depends on how it's implemented. I'd play a fast-and-squishy cheetah character, or a tegu anthro wizard whose backstory includes learning magic as a form of temperature control. I'd be a little put off if it was a wholly cosmetic thing, though.
>>
>>49321484
Nah, it's a neat design and thought the art style was familiar.

I like them barely anthromorphized.

Too anthro and it's furry shit, too little and its meaningless.
