The point is that most of the time people smile a it is not because they are more or less happy than anyone else. It's because within their culture, subculture or even vocation it is considered normal to smile often.

You'll find hundreds of thousands of front desk secretaries and other customer service staff that smile all the time because their job requires it, but are actually neither happy nor agreeable to deal with.

Most of the time what the presence of wrinkles from smiling actually predicts is how likely the person is to smile when you interact with them. This is fairly useful because it's still an indicator that someone is likely to not totally flip the fuck out if you talk to them, but it's not actually an indicator that they're happy.

Not that happiness is necessarily synonymous with someone being nice. I've met some people who were clearly very happy who were also horrible to other people for no fucking reason.
