Am I an absolute madman for wanting to make an EDH cube draft?
>>
>>49302660
Wouldn't that just take a huge amount of work and end up being less fun than either a normal draft cube or normal EDH?
>>
>>49302660
Yes

That would likely be astoundingly expensive and not very fun
>>
>>49302675
I think the challenge of developing it sounds fun, plus it sounds like a wonderful way to use bulk cards that one wouldn't normally use

I am looking to see if there is anything interesting or fun for me to use to help better the deck.

So I made a Mina and Denn, Wildborn deck, but it feels kinda, I dunno, scattered? Not quite focused enough? I'd like some advice if possible.

Obviously I'm missing some stuff, a couple of Overrun effects and probably Nissa, Worldwaker, but this is the best I could do with what I actually own.

I'm not super into edh but I'd like to have a whatever-deck to carry with me to FNMs and stuff for whenever the opportunity to get in some edh games on the side arises. I don't feel like spending much time on deckbuilding nor hunting down cards specifically to play them in an edh deck. Would buying one of the precons and upgrading it with whatever goodstuff that happens to find itself in my collection serve this purpose? Power level is irrelevant, I just want to be able to join in the average edh gang without feeling too handicapped.

Also, unpopular opinion: I actually am fine with Nin as my artifact Commander and I'm having very low expectations when they reveal the upcoming UR artifact Commander. Unless the new Commander has some form of tutor OR a way to dump mana, I'm sticking with Nin.

Slightly updated. Got my friend in for his first few rounds of EDH today. His Grimgrin is surprisingly good for a first commander deck, but he's always been a strong player so it was to be expected. Says he wants to build build a five color Scion deck next out of a draft deck he still has left over from Dragons of Tarkir. Should be interesting.

finally gonna try brago as a commander what with all these etb for energy counters in kaladesh. I have a few questions about his blink ability though. If I detention sphere an oblivion ring then blink all my permanents, does the o-ring etb with nothing to target on my field? Also, if brago hits a player and he activates spear of heliod, can I blink brago in response with his own ability to dodge that destroy effect?

I'm working on a Reaper King Stax deck. I don't have a list right now, but what are some suggestions for it past the usual Stax and Reaper King tools?

I'm already planning on including most of the viable scarecrows/changelings. I have my Smokestacks, Ensnaring Bridge, Winter Orb... You name it. If it goes in Stax normally, I probably have a copy of it. I've never tried this five color game before however; I'm a bit lost as to what spicy tech to include (especially red and green).
>>
>>49303471
For most of the sleeves I try to get dragon sheet mattes for their durability, but yeah those satin towers are pretty nice boxes.

>>49303538
For your second question, the Brago effect would go on the stack before your opponent has the opportunity to activate Spear first, so your opponent could respond to Brago's effect with the Spear's effect to destroy it. However, you cannot blink Brago "in response" to that effect. Also, if Brago re-enters after the blink, it wouldn't be a legal target for Spear.
>>
>>49303538
I don't understand the question about O-ring, all of your permanents are back when O-ring is back on the field.
You can dodge the destroy effect, unless they're stupid and don't activate the spear in response to Brago trigger. If they don't and you decide to blink Brago anyway, the spear won't hit him anymore.

I'm new to EDH. I've been reading up on decks, and I'd like one that's relatively cheap to build and works decently in both a group game and a 1v1. I'm interested in Stax, Pillowfort, and Eldrazi decks. Can anyone help?
>>
>>49303664
First Sphere, then O-ring, since the exile is instantaneous and it's back on the field when the LTB-ability resolves. At that point you can't exile Ring with Sphere, but works the other way.

Eldrazi may be expensive but there are multiple forms of pillowfort you can do.

I'm not really sure what you're definition of "cheap," may be but here is my iteration of pillowfort as a WU spirit tribal that beefs up Geist or any other ghost you wish. It's proven effective in both groups and 1v1 and is under $200.

I'm sure plenty of others have great ideas too.
>>
>>49303714
stax is far from budget and nobody wants to play 1v1 against it. eldrazi is meh unless you put money into it too, you that leaves your last option which is hardly fun in 1v1, but its the closest to what you described. Use edhrec.com and input commanders youre interested in running for ideas.

In more advanced meta stax can be welcome, though, as combo decks won't win as fast and therefore are easier to disrupt. Of course mana/resource denial irritate many people who just want to play fatties in a battlecruiser meta.
I find stax really fun to pilot and somewhat fun to play against, depending on what kind of deck I am playing and what kind of stax is it.

Go ETB token producers so there is synergy with Twimflame and Heat Shimmer. There are not many good ones unfortunately. You want creatures before, not after combat.

You want to roll Tempt with Vengeance, Goblin Fodder, Molten Birth, Krenko's Command, and Hordling Outburst.

All of those are cheap for Flashback with Past in Flames, or grabbing them with Goblin Dark-Dwellers.

No rituals besides Mana Gyser. You should instead run Gauntlet of Power, Caged Sun, Ruby Medallion. Most of your spells should be 1-2 CMC or free to cast.

Land that produce tokens or can be sacrificed for tokens are good as well.

>>
>>49303593
Unfortunately, the deck list isn't up at the moment. (Laziness is the excuse.) I can fill you on a few things: 1) The only "demigod Auras" I use are Favor of the Overbeing, (Flying/Vig), Gift of the Deity (Lure/Deathtouch), Steel of the Godhead (Unblock/Lifelink), and Runes of the Deus (Trample/2x Strike). I had all 10 of them but these four are the only relevant ones. Other Auras are obvious ones like Armadillo Cloak/Eldrazi Conscription/the like. Other than that it follows the same pattern as a Uril deck. I'm currently working on finding Enchantments that kind of mix up the gameplay a bit while retaining the Aura theme it has.

>>49303647
I haven't put up a list for Queen Bitch (again, laziness) but I will give you the Zurgo list before it became Queen Marchesa since a good chunk of it is retained through the transitioning process.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zurgo-helmsmasher-boardwipesuperfriends/
There are far less Planeswalkers and Boardwipes, and focuses more on Sunforger/Instants. The Planeswalkers I do keep all make tokens for themselves plus Ugin/Lilly v.1. Obliterate + Academy Rector is still a thing in this deck.

Take a deep breath and contemplate on what exactly irritates you. If you know why then you can stop keep it from ruining the experience.
Just go:
"Deep breath"
Why am I angry?
Does it makes sense?
Does it have anything to do with the situation at hand?
If no, then calm down and relax. There is no need to be upset.

It works for me and hope you find it helpful.
>>
>>49304503
Commander is a format where you can use almost every card in the history of magic in it. It's also a social format. Me and all my buddies have been playing Magic for 18+ years. This is casual to us. The term is relative based on your local playgroup.
>>
Hey, a tangentally related question. Sorry if this is off topic, but I checked the catalog and couldn't find a better general to put this in:

I need money and I'm considering selling my Magic cards (mostly EDH stuff). What's the best way to go about this? I've sold cards to LGS before, but they have to resell the card, so you don't get the card's full value that way.
>>
>>49304630
Ebay.
>>
>>49304707
A possibility. One of the wrinkles about selling your collection is how to break it down. Most people won't want your whole collection unless its at a discount, but selling singles is more time consuming. I'm not sure what the best balance is.
>>
>>49304716
I'd sell the more valuable cards in your collection as singles and then the rest in bulk, probably.
>>
>>49302633

Seems to lack wincons. I would cut some of the shittier and more situational instants like Treacherous Urge, the other Kamigawa legends, and Spotlight for Coffers, Nykthos, Expedition Map, and a couple more haymakers. The deck looks weak against spellslinger and control, so I would also like to see some stax effects like Bottomless Pit

Hey /edh/ I'm looking for some mono red sac enablers to get pic related into the graveyard quickly in my Zirilan deck. I have Fling and Barrage of the Expendables but I'd like to add more if there are any to increase the reliability. Any suggestions?

They exist. Usually theres some funky rules around drafting, like draft commanders first and last pack is lands or something like that, but they're hella fun.

I've been playing a MonoB deck for roughly 2 years. Not too long ago, I got the Daxos precon and decided to build on it, but only proxied a deck to test, so far, and didn't like it all that much. Eventually decided to try out Gitrog. Yesterday was its first test run.

As a result, I'll be buying Crucible of Worlds instead of Serra Sanctum next month. Holy shit it's so fucking fun! Who else frogging here? Anyone wanna share secret mad techz for it?

Any up-to-date proxy maker websites? Bluebones doesn't have take the crown.

You cannot use Brago's ability to dodge a removal, because it is a trigger that immediately goes to the stack as it deals combat damage. By the time opponents get priority, the effect is already on the stack and any removal would resolve before the blink.

When it comes to o-ring, it is important to notice that it has two triggered effects: one that triggers when it enters the battlefield and another that triggers when it leaves. So if you blink o-ring (or cards with identical wording) with brago, bothe the ETB trigger and the LTB trigger are put on the stack st the same time and you can order them on the stack as you choose. In other words, you could have the o-ring exile a permanent before the last one comes back or vice versa. You cannot exile the same permanent because the ETB effect needs a target when its put on the stack and at that point the original exiled permanent hasnt left exile yet.

>i want to make a deck that uses these cards

You have like a billion options that can survive on a sac theme.

I'm particular to Meren since she can run the sac-control shit along with a larger toolbox, but Mazirek is legit too, as is Shirei and mono-Sidisi and Teysa, and Ayli and old-Marchesa and Ghave.

Fuck, most black or part-black commanders can work with those cards, it's really a question of just how powerful and synergistic you want it.
>>
>>49306063
ok well i'll narrow it down since i've got so many options

my last deck was mostly green so i'd prefer not to use that color

i also don't really like monoblack since i feel like it limits the deck to playing the same old black goodstuff as always

i also don't really like build-around or mana-heavy commanders, since in my meta, the response to someone casting a commander is "i vindicate it as it enters the battlefield" unless that commander is really goofy or cheap. i don't know if a shirei deck could work in my meta since she's on the high end of commander manacosts, and she looks somewhat build-around (not sure if she is)

i'm mostly looking at the orzhov colors right now since they lend themselves well to a controlly, saccy and lifegainy strategy, but sadly none of the orzhov commanders really do it for me. ayli seems nice in a couple of ways but her 2 sac abilities are low-impact and winmorey.

but thanks for the suggestions so far
>>
>>49306146

If you're looking at Orzhov then I'd definitely go with Teysa.

Cheap to cast, works great with the cards you wanna lose and has some really powerful combo potential with shit like Darkest Hour+Blasting Station or Darkest Hour+Ashnod's Altar+Blood Artist

She really powerful and really fun.

What are good "toolbox" decks for EDH? I want to build a deck with the ability to play and find answers to situations very quickly and be able to react while slowly working out a win con with the parts presented.

Anyone have some good ideas, I'm freaking lost in all the options. I was thinking Toshiro Umezawa or Dranu Lichlord as they allow me to turn my graveyard into a tool box but I wanted to see what other options exist. Also what win conditions could go along with these?

Okay okay, answer this:

Extort gimmick deck

Awful jank, or fun jank, or fun AND good? (in a somewhat casual, control+creature heavy table)
>>
>>49307358

Fun jank.

It's not even competitive in a casual environment, it's just too slow and costly.
>>
>>49307385
huh

i was thinking of putting tons of extort stuff in an ayli deck and using it to be health taxman and board police. i'm currently doing it on xmage with some shitty deck and it's pretty fun, but it might be because i'm otherwise the most useless player on the board and no one has time to deal with me and my shitty cheap enchantments like blind obedience and bloodchief ascension

>it's just too slow and costly
not sure if it's really a problem since i can go heavy on control and just deal with individual things that screw me over, and the fact that the deck is so non-threatening and grindy is probably good in our meta where it's 4 players racing to victory every time using their build-around commander

There aren't enough CMC on three different Eldrazi cards to cause 40 damage though... and the ones with the Higher CMC also reshuffle your grace meaning Feldon don't do shit...

He is still golden in a Lord of Riots Rakdos deck though as you could do 6 damage, play Conduit of Ruin, reveal that Emrakul, the Promised End is going on the top, then play Gearhulk and force someone into bad choices. The deck also runs a lot of high CMC cards anyways due to Rakdos.

>>
>>49308032
Apparently there is going to be a part two in the reveal for these things so there may be more? also the ratio for getting them is:

The Masterpiece Series will exist at a rarity higher than mythic rare. For example, in Kaladesh, you will open a Kaladesh Inventions card roughly 1 out of every 144 boosters. (Technically, the Kaladesh booster pack says the ratio is 1:2,160 cards.) This is slightly more often than opening a premium mythic rare. These ratios may change for future sets.

Honestly, Meren makes a great toolbox if you don't go the reanimator route. People see her and think that you should focus on dumping and reanimating, but she's much better if played as a toolbox with recurrable answers. You can force saccing, prevent damage with things like spore frog, access good kill spells, and tutor with things like Vampiric/Demonic/Diabolic/Worldly Tutor or Black Sidisi for misc. answers, play fatties for threats, drain/gain life, draw cards because of black's exceptional card draw, and ramp because green.

Her ability is just frosting once you consider how solid the 99 is. She makes the entire toolbox reusable and he's just being present is a value engine because her ability is so easy to set up, but it's not entirely necessary. GB is a great color combo because the colors cover each other's weaknesses pretty well, and Meren didn't have to be gimmicky if you're smart about it.

We were able to reprint some in Masters sets and others in supplemental booster releases like the Conspiracy sets, but we recognized there was still more demand for reprints and we needed to find additional places to release them.

There.

is savra, queen of the golgari shitty or why does she have 1/10 the popularity that meren does? is it just because meren is so goodstuffy and viable in way more deck archetypes?

i feel like meren would be the smart thing to build but i kind of want to be a hipster and build something that isn't cookie cutter powerful. i like the idea of grave pact on a creature but i think it might draw so much hate on that creature that it wouldnt really work

Like what >>49309605 said, toolboxes are just goodstuff decks that have ways to ensure they tutor the stuff they need.

I get your reference to YuGiOh, I played Gravekeepers and Warrior toolbox back in the day.

Here are a few commanders that could help you. All of them allow tutoring in various ways. Some tutor for certain cards, like Toshiro and Dranu, but some are far more general like Pic Related, who is literally a tutor on a body.

Captain Sisay: Tutors for legendaries
Meren of Clan Nel Toth: can be built toolbox like >>49308319 said
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary: A Green Blue creature tutor engine, limited to creatures only
Zur the Enchanter: low Cmc Enchantment tutor engine
Sliver Overlord: Sliver tutor for sliver tribal
Scion of the Ur-Dragon: Dragon tutor
Arcum Dagsson: non creature Artifact tutoring
Yisan, the Wanderer Bard: Creature tutor
Zirilan of the Claw: Red Dragon tutor
Godo, Bandit Warlord: Equiptment tutor
Maralen of the Mornsong: Everyone tutors
Sidisi, Undead Vizier: Tutor anything

Just look over these and build a toolbox out of the types they tutor for with just good cards. Or, look into stuff that messes with the graveyard like Toshiro, Dranu, Darreti, Meren and other resurrection themes. You mill your toys into the graveyard and when needed you can use them like a tool box, just be wary of graveyard hate.

i actually tested shirei out on xmage earlier and it was decently fun. the problem is that the commander is pretty much inherently win hard or lose hard, which is something i don't want right now (my last deck was like that). shirei would also never survive longer than 1 turn in my control heavy meta where everyone gets spooked and shoots removal everywhere the instant someone else does something remotely threatening

Reanimator Meren and Toolbox Meren aren't really incompatible.

Entomb, Buried Alive and Jarad's Orders are all highly efficient tutors that rely on reanimation.

Fellow tutorfag here, it depends on how serious your playgroup is. Mine is relatively casual and the decks are mostly midrange. I play a Zirilan toolbox deck and a Sisay toolbox deck and both do pretty decently in the casual setting. They're both budget (at or less that $100) so that's cool too.

I'm thinking of making a PDF of the types of decks and strategies for a guide to new players. This will include an in depth description of different deck archetypes, as well as what colors each fit into, and which commanders are popular for each category.

If anyone wants to contribute, I'd be happy to include your work in the final for the PDF.

Defined by the player archetype, Timmy battle-cruiser decks revolve around the three B's: big land, big creatures, big beatings.

Anon, please. Meren, phyrexian arena, command beacon, and mystic confluence are all more expensive. Also, when you try to buy one of the decks, you will note that Meren is by far the most expensive deck, in no small part because it performs quite well out of the box. The RW deck is the rock bottom cheapest. This is not because it was "best sold". It does not cost $15 less that Plunder the Graves because it was popular.

>How is Sisay?
She's brand new - literally just ordered the cards the other day so I haven't been able to play her in the actual group yet - but I've been doing some play testing on Tappedout with my other decks and she seems like she's gonna be at least decent in my group's meta.

Basically the idea is mana ramp as quickly as possible, tutor out Reki and sometimes combine him with Zendikar Resurgent for huge card draw, tutor Sigarda to keep Sisay safe, and then each turn build up board control with dudes like Michiko and Dosan. You can also tutor out more protection for Sisay or Sigard to secure your board state with Saffi, Eight and a Half Tails, and Yomiji. For removal, there's Glissa and Mangara to tutor, as well as Swords to Plowshares, Condemn, and Dromoka's Command. Yisan can quickly tutor out important non legends like Mother of Runes. The wincon is essentially overwhelming your opponent, most often using Odric Lunarch, Sigarda, and Myogin to give all your creatures Flying, Hexproof, and Indestructible during combat.

Here's the decklist, keep in mind it was built on a budget so some of the beefier white legends aren't included. Even without them though, the deck has plenty of answers for most situations and a lot of variety.

Also, firebombers IS mld.

But desu, ETB damage triggers aren't the best thing you can do with Feldon usually.

You can't really do much for traditional stax because Feldon doesn't usually have tokens. mass land destruction tho, that can work. You only need 3 mana, a scary thing in the graveyard, and Feldon in order to beat down. After a Keldon firebomber wipe, beat down via it that betrays can be hard to come back from.

Monored may yet hold the answers. Krenko goblins and purphuros tokens can make your deck the deck archenemy in a more fun way, the kind that encourages your friends to improve without subjecting them to the experience of having their spirits broken with stax. A fast, aggressive, but fair deck can be just what some casuals need to step up their game a bit.

I can't tell what you're going for here, it overall just feels extremely unfocused. You've got a ton of nonbasics for seemingly no real reason, the weirdest of all is Shrine of The Forsaken Gods.
I would advise picking a theme and sticking to it a little bit tighter, and also pay attention to the charts on the right side there. Just from a glance it's obvious that this deck might have some problems casting the red spells.

Also you have Keranos in the 99. It says you have 101 cards, so you have to cut him and another one since tappedout doesn't consider the commander part of the deck.

Huge improvement already. Looks much cleaner and easier on the eyes than what you had before. Definitely get that up there over what you have now.

Side note, I watched your featured video and liked it. I'll probably watch more. If I could give one suggestion, I'd say you might try to add just a little bit more character to your delivery. It's not like you're completely monotoned right now or anything and I definitely got your personality from what I watched, but the channels that end up doing really well on youtube are ones driven by people with big personalities. Even if that's not how you normally are, it might help to fake it when you're making videos. Idk how you feel about showing your face, but for whatever reason that always seems to go over well with viewers too. Gives the videos more of that characteristic and human element.

Anyway, good luck with your channel and I hope you make it big.

What are the odds of a booster having one again?
They look amazing but it's sad that I'll probably never even see one.
