Then there's also some desciptions of Scandinavian huldra, who aren't malicious but instead fall in love with people and want to marry them. When the gods created the universe they disagreed on how intelligent life should be. One side wished for only mere animals to exist to preserve their habitat, while the other wanted more sapient beings as the former would grow dull and boring to watch. After centuries of fighting the two sides reached a conclusion. It was that only one order of creatures, primates, would be allowed to evolve far past what normally would have been possible. This was all well and good for a while, until the pro-sapient gods grew bored of their humans. They demanded that more species should be forced up the evolutionary tree. This was met by a fierce resistance from the others as the humans impact on their planet was already more than expected. The gods ended up fighting, and in the turmoil one of the gods ran amok on our earth, evolving the beasts himself behind the other's backs. This god lacked power and time to create a unique appearance for each and every species, however, and so simply based most of them off of the primates- making them humanoid in appearance with the same flesh, hair, organ structure, etc as the humans.
