Tiers are usage-based. A Tier 2 deck can be better than a Tier 1 deck in a specific metagame.

Yeah, lets you turn ghost quarter into plains or a shockland. 4 is optimum, as there's next to no disadvantage to drawing multiples.

Thanks to that anon
>obligatory lmao Tarfire
>>
>>49276376
Don't listen to this guy, you're playing Emeria. You can't afford non plains lands. You would have to cut plains for a marginal deck thinning benefit you already get with fetches. I used to play that deck all the time, its not great but it is a very carefully thought out synergistic pile. Don't listen to random people when they tell you to make changes, test them first and use your noggin.
>>
>>49278125
>its not great
That's an understatement
>>
>>49278125
It's not for thinning, it's for turning your ghost quarter into plains for emeria.
>>
>>49278125
>thinning
Lol
>>
>>49278125
>I'm retarded
>>
Does Cheerios still suck?
>>
>>49278160
You would have to cut plains. Its not worth it. Why do you think the deck runs gq? Most of the time youre using it to lock down manlands and keep tron off of tron. You dont have to make that card better, you can afford 10 non plains lands. You can't afford 14. UW Emeria has never played flagstones because the benefits dont outweigh the deckbuilding cost.
>>
>Run 2 Flagstones of Trokair
>Now you can turn your 4 Ghost Quarters into Plains if you need to
>>
>>49278397
Unless your opponent is destroying your plains there's no reason to run 1-3 flags instead of 4. Drawing multiples turns all but 1 into plains.
>>
>>49278445
Oh right, I was still thinking of mutual annihilation for legendaries.
>>
>>49278397
2 is worse than 4 dude. Have you played this deck? Do you understand how it works? You need actual plains in your deck, going below 7 basics is really bad.
>>
Hi guys, so my cousin wants me to play magic, but I'm not sure whats the best way to get a decent deck. I got some sample decks from stores, and bought some of the Eldritch series booster packs, I read that things like fat packs aren't worth the investment, should I look into intro decks or deck builders? I'm trying to build a blue dark deck, but my current cards are kind of a mish mash a various things i got from the boosters.
>>
>>49278528
>my cousin wants me to play magic
Then your cousin is an asshole. Magic these days is a terrible game. It's ridiculously expensive (Modern's best deck costs about $1500. For fucking trading cards), and not even an enjoyable game as a lot of the time in Modern at least, games can end the instant someone draws the right card.

Don't play Magic. Your cousin wants you to, but your cousin is an asshole and /tg/ wants to save you before you get into expensive trouble.
>>
I've decided to convert one of my old standard decks (INN/RTR Fight Club) to something that's actually built for modern, names Monogreen Stompy.
One of Fight Club's biggest assets was Predator Ooze, which won you the game if your opponent didn't find one of the four or five answers that were available in that standard. When I was looking over some lists for ideas, I noticed that Predator Ooze didn't show up in any of them.
Is it too slow for modern? Am I just being silly in wanting to utilize it?

Rules question for you, since there isn't a more fitting thread for it right now.

I have a sparring collar attached to one of my guys (A). I attack with this guy and another one (B). During the first strike damage step, after A dealt its damages, I decide to move the collar to B with the {R}{R} ability.
Does B deal first strike damage, normal damages, or no damage at all? (since he was "too late" for the first strike step, but now having the ability he can't just deal damages during the regular damage step)

Where's the judge thread when you need it?

>>
>>49280873
Ah, well it still deals damage in the normal phase even if it got first strike after first strike damage, which creatures deal damage in the following damage step is decided before the step starts, to circumvent people removing first strike from their creature and having it effectively "gain" doublestrike as it would deal damage in both steps.

Could've just googled it though.

Cavern will most probably be reprinted at rare, where it will drop to 30-40 at best.

Vial maybe.

Lord of Atlantis / Master of the Pearl Trident likely, but not both.

Cursecatcher likely.

The rest is up in the air. They won't reprint an entire deck in a set though.

So, aside from being relatively dead on board until turn 3, and probably scooping to distress effects, what glaring issues would exist in a tron land based deck which only uses cheap (0 or 1 drop) artifacts and knowledge pool? Win condition would solely be whatever my opponent's packing.

I was considering it for a default-to modern deck, since it's essentially forced to scale to an environment which doesn't win before turn 3, so it's good for casual as well as somewhat competitive affairs.

I believe this solely becuase SFM is more in line with "battlefield Magic" than most of the current bandits. WotC is pushing the game toward midrange slugfests (see the repritnts of Imp. Recruiter and then Sanctum Prelate in Legacy) and SFM accomplishes that goal well. I don't think we'll see Jitte unbanned, but having SFM means better midrange and control decks, and more importantly it makes the control decks more creature-centric. This is what they want.

I think infect would hardly feel it

Suicide zoo probably takes the biggest hit?

Either way neither deck are so good to demand a ban

I dont see why become immense would need a ban. Right now I just want to see some new printings or unbans that stop the format from being so linear

Become Immense is the most likely card to be banned of anything floating around right now, mainly because there have been some turn 2/3 kills powered out by it lately during some high profile events. WotC doesn't want to compromise the image of Modern's turn 4 rule, so any complaints about those wins will fall squarely on Become Immense.

Depends on your stomp, my stomp (>>49295729) is slower with +1/+1 counters and devotion to green, while most stomp is faster with groundbreakers and aspect of hydra. scythe tiger might be good if your stomp runs mana dorks in it or surrak so that after turn four you can drop hasted tigers and not care about land anymore. all in all i think it could fit well into a dedicated stompy, but not the two most popular varities

Normal damage. The Comprehensive Rules have a specific entry spelling out how this works, at least if you're asking what I think you're asking:

> 702.7c Giving first strike to a creature without it after combat damage has already been dealt in the first combat damage step won’t prevent that creature from assigning combat damage in the second combat damage step. Removing first strike from a creature after it has already dealt combat damage in the first combat damage step won’t allow it to also assign combat damage in the second combat damage step (unless the creature has double strike).
>>
>>49296445

I'm hoping I've made the right sideboard decisions and can 3- 1 this week.

Just gotta keep practicing.
>>
>>49299196
Sequencing is a big part of Affinity. Knowing when to spend mana on creatures and when to spend it casting a Drum, Blast/Thoughcast, or Plating, activating Moths, or even holding up mana to switch up Cranial Plating. Run through opening hands and try to figure out the most efficient way to spend your mana and maximize your presence early on. Don't forget that every Mox you draw after the first is essentially a Lotus Petal if you need it to be.

Remember that your moths count as artifacts and creatures even if they have summoning sickness and that they can pay to activate themselves. Sometimes you'll activate Moths that aren't attacking just to grow Cranial Plating or Master, tap a Drum, feed the Ravager, receive Overseer or Ravager's counters, or even rarely to enable Metalcraft. Learn when it's best to attack with two Moths or to use a Blinkmoth to strengthen one of your others. Try to play Moths as early as you can when choosing between lands, to allow them to attack.

Being a synergy based deck, most of what correctly playing Affinity requires you to do is just learn how to make the most of your cards' interactions.
>>
>>49299435
2W is worse in every way. Keeping your Vial on 2 is just as important as actually casting the creature.

>>49299912
I just want them to fuck the reserved list into another orbit. Noone benefits from it. Not even they themselves really benefit from it that's the funny part. And from my understanding it's just some promise they made long ago right? So noone could sue them for getting rid of it.
>>
>>49299912
>Fuck NWO
NWO isn't a real problem for Modern. It's just complexity of commons.

>Fuck the Jacestice League
Also irrelevant to Modern.

>Correct color identities
>Fire MaRo
>Another Time Spiral set
These are conflicting arguments and show you don't really understand what goes on in the background of development. MaRo was the main reason Time Spiral happened to begin with. A second Time Spiral is also probably the worst thing you could possibly to do maintain color identities.
>>
>>49300020
>thinking the nwo doesnt provide a color by numbers card design philosophy at every rarity

Embarassing.
>>
>>49300017
>So noone could sue them for getting rid of it.

>Promissory estoppel is a legal principle that a promise is enforceable by law, even if made without formal consideration, when a promisor has made a promise to a promisee who then relies on that promise to his subsequent detriment.

Anyone who spent thousands of dollars on Reserved cards would be able to sue if any of those cards decreased significantly in value after they were reprinted. WotC might be able to win those lawsuits, on the basis that they have removed cards in the past, but there exists much more risk of losing them than there is any benefit they could possibly pitch to make legal willing to take that risk.
>>
>>49300067

>>
>>49300058
And what exactly are you implying by "color by numbers" here? That there haven't been any cards noticeably pushed since the NWO's inception? That they haven't reconsidered the boundaries of a color's slice of the pie?
>>
>>49300080
I could say the same to you.
>>
>>49299912

>>
>>49280661
It just wins or losses pretty much. The bad matchups are quite bad and with a bunch of decks like Burn, tron, affinity, etc it can't keep up
>>
>>49300192
New World Order.
It was WotC's attempt at a card design philosophy designed to reverse the severe decline in players that Magic suffered following Time Spiral and Lorwyn.

It has been successful so far. Magic's community grows with every set where before it simply held at the best of times and diminished whenever things went wrong. Theros, often derided by /tg/ as one of the worst sets in recent history, experienced steady growth even amidst the sea of complaints.
>>
>>49300192
The idea of the NWO is to dumb down everything especially commons and uncommons because 12 years olds with brain damage get confused when a good set like Time Spiral introduces more than only 1 mechanic. So now every set has boring new mechanics with +1/+1 counters
>>
>>49300279
>>49300455
Ah, as long as a good rare comes out every now and again which provides a convoluted horseshit, "build around me" kind of effect, I'll be happy.
>>
>>49300484
It hasn't even been solely the property of Rares to shake things up even since the NWO was implemented. Two of the most important cards in enabling Dredge as a viable Modern archetype, Faithless Looting and Insolent Neonate, were Commons printed after the NWO's inception.

Admittedly, it's Prized Amalgam that serves as the actual teeth of the deck, but NWO hasn't invalidated Commons as an important source of cards for some engines.

The original post was:
>Explain to me why you would use this card over this?

Which is kind of a fucking mess in terms of properly identifying which "this" is supposed to be which, but definitely seems to be asking why people would play Thalia over the horse. Saying people play 2x of the horse vs. 3x or 4x of Thalia actually serves as evidence to support the reasons why people play Thalia over it. If the horse were better you'd see 4 of them and 1 or 2 Thalias.
>>
>>49301557
>you don't know how to play this deck at 100% efficiency!!!!!!!
Doesn't really matter when the deck loses at any efficiency

>>
>>49303746
What are dredges actual hard match ups? Do they only lose to RiP?
>>
>>49303838
Dredge can have a really hard time against Tron, especially if they go straight into Ugin or get their random mainboard Relic. Firespout can hold you off while they look for something to ruin your life.

Infect can be a bit of a problem as often your only removal is Conflagrate and your only fliers are Narcos, so there's a real chance you just get slammed by a Blighted Agent or Inkmoth and never really had a chance to do anything about it. Gets a lot better with Darkblasts in the mix though.

Ad Nauseam can kill you just as quick as you kill them, only they have cards that can interrupt you and you don't really have anything to interrupt them.
>>
>a good modern deck is $600

Defend this, I dare you.
>>

>>49304571
Lingering Souls is the biggest pull for that colour combination. Splash green for siege rhino, get some thoughtseizes/IoK, and Scope/goyf. look up Modern Junk. There are gonna be somethings that you can skip on and get budget versions, but others are pretty integral. Like turn 1 discard
>>
>>49303997
Tron is a great matchup wtf? You just run them over turn 3/4, none of their cards matter except for exactly turn 4 Ugin which is beatable with any decent hand. Relic is a speedbump at best.

The matchups that are hard for dredge mainboard are.
>Infect
>Ad Nauseam
>Bogles
>Suicide Zoo
>GR Breach
>Thing Storm

Abzan CoCo, Bant Eldrazi, Burn, Affinity, Elves, and Gruul Zoo can put up a decent fight in a match if they board a little hate. 3 color goodstuff.dec is a bye no matter what flavor, I'd say if you have 4 dedicated hate cards you can get your post board games to 50/50 at best. Merfolk, Death and Taxes, RUG Scapeshift, Kiki Chord, Living End, and Tron are byes as well.

I can agree with this

Similar to how new Gideon panned out

Is there any case of applying promissory estoppel when the promise isn't given to any particular individual/company/institution, but rather an open statement like the reserve list is?

>What it feels like playing noncreature hate in a format full of creatures
I've played D&T against Standard decks. It just can't hold up to creatures.
>>
is tezzerator viable yet?

>>49305936
No. Check back when full Kaladesh spoilers are out.
>>

>Where do I start?
You don't. There really is zero reason to play Orzhov control. There is nothing that deck could do that another deck can't do better. Just play Mardu, all memes aside it's not that bad of a deck, might even be tier 3 one day.

"Toolshaper Paradigm"WCreature - Dwarf ArtificerAt the begining of your combat step, if you control an artifact "Toolshaper Paradigm" gains +2/+1 until end of turn. If you control at least 3 artifacts, it also gains first strike until end of turn.
>>
>>49306117
Not bad, very easily a 1 cost 3/2. Biggest problem is that it's not an artifact itself.

>>49305924
... Maybe I'm being foolish here, but if Modern is so choke full of creatures why doesn't D&T run the Heretic Cathar Thalia?

It is creature AND mana disruption on a pretty good beater. She even survives Bolt and combat with Eiganjo. You'd think it'd be usable as a sideboard tool against Suicide Zoo and the like.
>>
>>49306235
The cancer creatures come down before turn 3.
>>
>>49306424
Is that really the only thing keeping her from being playable?, Her CMC being 3 rather than 2?

Seems like a pretty meager reason. Is there any way ypu could speed her up?, Surely there must be something.

There's also Path if you are running mono-W with Arbiter. Spot removal goes pretty well vs cancer creatures.
>>
>>49306471
Spot removal DOES do well against creatures. But when the iconic card of D&T is a 2 mana creature that makes spells cost more, giving your opponent an extra land is just dumb. Modern just comes at you from too many directions, and D&T lacks the ability to interact with land, which is half of why the Legacy version of the deck is so good.
>>
>>49306512
Then what sort of Mana acceleration could be run in the deck?, Acclerating your own mana should work nicely alongside slowing your enemy's.

I feel new Thalia has real potential. With the original it enables D&T to deal with a whole new range of creature-based decks in a meta where midrange is gaining weight with every new set.
>>
>>49306815
If you're going to accelerate your mana, just run Titanshift and blow people up on turn 4.
>>
>>49304650
>Tron is a great matchup wtf?

Not really. If you don't hit a perfect stride turn 2, they have any number of options for stalling you with Firespouts, Oblivion Stone, or Wurmcoil. An early Relic can perfectly prevent you from hitting that stride too. It gets no better in game 2 where your sideboard cards are mediocre at best against them, and theirs can easily shut you down.

Like I said though, "Dredge can have a really hard time against Tron". It's a matchup that can very easily go against you.
>>
>>49304791
>Maybe fringe sb play
>sb

What exactly are you siding her in for?
>>
When did affinity become so expensive?
>>
>>49307652
Modern Masters. A bunch of people opened Moths and Ravagers and thought "Affinity isn't that expensive, I should buy in." Supply barely increased but demand doubled.

By the time Modern Masters 2 came out, people were already aware of just how little the reprints actually affected card prices, so the Moxes barely dropped at all.

When I got into Modern I bought a playset of Ravagers for $40. Now it's almost $40 for a single one. If that doesn't go to show how ineffectual MMA was at lowering prices, nothing really will.
>>
>>49308306

Exactly. People open MM because they like modern. That means when a dude cracks a goyf, hes gonna wanna look for more, usually.

I can't stand how they think limited print runs designed to //generate interest// in a format will cut prices.
>>
hi, newfag here who stopped playing around Khans of Tarkir and would like to come back to the modern format. I've also been away from the whole mtg community so its kind of harder.

What has changed? what new cards should I look forward to build some control deck? Is U/W viable again?
>>
>>49308476
>what new cards should I look forward to build some control deck?

Nahiri, the Harbinger.

Pretty much the only viable Modern Control deck is Jeskai Control, also known as "Nahiri Control" due to how vital Nahiri is for providing the deck the finisher it always lacked. If you stopped around Khans, you might recognize what colors Jeskai stands for, but if not they're UWR. If you're looking to get back in on U/W Control, this is the incarnation you'll most likely find yourself playing.
>>
>>49308306
Oh, I see. I bought a playset of inkmoths for 30€ and a playset of ravagers for like 40€ too. checked the prices today and was pretty surprised.
>>
>>49308540

Thanks, I'll see

Grindy matches where her +1 is relevant. Same situations as when you board in pyromaster in jund.

So she could take pyromasters fringe slot in jund, but I'd figure most lists are just going to stick with pyromaster.
>>
>>49308540
nahiri jeskai is a combo deck though, there are no viable control decks in modern
>>
>>49306235
Enough lists are, and I've been very happy with her as a 2-3 of depending on what I'm expecting to run in to
as far as >>49306471
Her CMC is kind of a rough spot, I've been considering whether it could be worth it to go G/W and play heirarchs since her or an arbiter+GQ activation on turn 2 could be pretty backbreaking against a lot of decks
Also I think the Eldazi and Taxes lists aren't just a meme, displacer especially is really good with a ton of the cards in the deck to interact with opponents

I don't know a soul that plays Pyromaster mainboard in Jund. Jund player here, I think she outright out replaces Pyromaster. Since I like playing with new cards I'm gonna test it as a 1 of in the mainboard over Liliana, the Last Hope. Will get back to you on performance in a couple weeks when it's out.

>>
>>49303388
I cut them and side in 1 Graf diggers, 2 Anger of the Gods, 1 Extripate, and 1 Obstinate Baloth. Not too sure on how correct that is. There is only 1 Dredge player I have ever played against and I've probably won half our games.
>>
So every set is going to have a few expeditions from here on out. Called masterpieces.

How do you feel about this?
>>
>>49303388
>>49310869

Cut all of your discard and put in GY hate and Fulminators.

If you take them off of Green mana their options for dealing with your board/burning you out are basically gone.

>I don't know a soul that plays Pyromaster mainboard in Jund.

I thought it was clear I was talking about the SB, but whatever.

>I think she outright out replaces Pyromaster

I think it comes down tp preference. If you value the shock Pyromaster is worse, if you don't care about the shock, just keep playing Pyromaster.

Keep in mind ToD's clause of "You may cast that card" vs Pyromasters "You may play it this turn."

Unless for some reason it gets insane results, I'm fine with just leaving in Pyromaster.

It's fine but I can't believe the shithulks are all getting them. Only green and white are worth the paper they'll be printed on. They're gonna put one money reprint to try and spur pack sales, with no guarantees once the novelty wears off.

I don't mind that they exist. I think if people with too much money to spend that want to foil out their decks have one more money sink to shoot for, by all means. If I get the chance to pull one in a draft, I like it. That said, their justifications in the article are bullshit. Standard will only be affected if these masterpieces actually make them sell that many more packs to have an oversupply of new cards so secondary market prices are dirt cheap (they have the metrics internally from the experiment with nu-zendikar and subsequently nu-innistrad), and the "we are giving you reprints!" Is bullshit too because the people who want reprints are looking for more supply and reduced prices, not a handful of foil mythic rarity reprints that will probably only drive up demand and costs will still remain absurd if expeditions are any indication.

The real issue here is the dude who will pull mana crypt and slaughter the limited grand prix due to the highest RNG variance mtg has ever seen.
