Also if you look at the myth, Athena was a real bitch to curse Medusa , she was raped in an Athena temple by Poseidon, and Athena cursed punished her because she couldnt pose a threat to her uncle.
For a godess of wisdom, her actions doesnt show her intelligence, like her contest with Arachnéa

Medusa was quite prideful with her beauty, she bragged about it a lot. Some version also said that she was priestress of Athena. The godess just didnt liked that her temple was "tainted", I don't think that Poseidon would care either way he just wanted his dick wet , he is way more powerful than Athena , she just couldnt punished him and needed to vent.
Medusa was a scapegoat

That's how I interpret it with the myths I read.
Greek Gods are asshole anyway

I guess it was a different morality and a different culture. The things that happen in the older mythology were steeped in symbolism and meaning that is lost on us now.

There was a notion of Hubris, being to prideful would lead the gods to punish you, Oedipus suffered from the wrath of the gods.
In greek myths you don't fuck around with fate and gods, but you are right I think, a lot of justification were lost in history and translation.

If you read the actual original myths, the real curse was Medusa's own beauty, which drew the gaze of Poseidon in the first place.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence would know that Athena's "punishment" was actually a gift, she removed Medusa's beauty, and then imbued her with so much fucking power that no man could ever force themselves upon her ever again.

She was even adopted into the Gorgon clan. So she wound up with a loving family of sisters who were all immune to her powers, on top of it all. And I always hate it when people completely ignore the Gorgons who took her in as one of their own. Medusa wasn't turned into a Gorgon, she was granted that title AFTER her transformation.

She was living the high life until some dickwad decided to cut her head off.

Both, the Gorgons being a group of sisters that adopt Medusa is a huge part of the original myth that gets completely ignored. Medusa originally had the body of a lion and the wings of a great eagle. And the Gorgons could fly as well. So she and her adoptive sisters lived at the top of a tall natural spire of rock.

But it is my personal interpretation that being transformed into a monster was Athena's blessing in disguise. It's not so much a headcanon as it is simply the vibe I got. The "punishment" part always came off to me as a very poor translation. Or it was "dumbed down", like how parents tell kids that babies come from cabbage patches, because they think we are stupid plebeians who need to be spoon fed the "important" aspects of ancient mythology. Without allowing us to read it for ourselves and form our own opinions on it.

I am pretty sure the dumbing down is why nobody remembers that Medusa could FUCKING FLY, or mentions her Gorgon family.

The half serpent them seems like they just took a Lamia and slapped Medusa's head on it because they couldn't be assed to do proper research.
>>
>>49288269
Except that it's hard to read the "original" myth, the storytelling was mostly oral,(but Homer writing have a lot of information) elements changed with time, I'm not saying your version is wrong, but there are so many variable for some basics element that you can't say there is a true version
Hell, some version say the Medusa was married to poseidon ,that she have gold wings and a horse body.
The part about her being raped is also ommited sometimes and Athena punish her for herconstant boasting.

It's ok, sometimes people can't tell the difference between ferrets and snakes.
>>
>>49279131

snakes get along with eachother generally in perfect conditions, but theres a few things that very easily can make them hate eachother (and all apply DOUBLY to conjoined snakes)

they need enough food, which is obvious, yet conjoined only have to eat half as much as two snakes, thus can fight over it
snakes primary sense is smell, and often their food bleeds while being eaten, making the snake smell of food, to the other hungry snake
snakes generally get along, except when its mating season. females are usually alright together, but males of most species either directly compete, or drive out other males from their territory
several snake species eat other snakes, possibly even of their own species (king snake eggs literally emit a smell that disgusts the mother, to keep her from staying at the nest, and to make the babys leave as fast as possible)

a well fed corn, that eats frozen thawed, generally would live with two heads, near to its full lifespan, but a wild snake nearly never would

You bring up an excellent point, and it ties in to my argument a bit.

There is so much more to Medusa than "LOL, she was raeped and Athena is raepe apologist. LOL Medusa asked for it. Athena turned her into a snaek, LOL."

I mean damn, is it really so hard for someone to do basic fucking research? At this point in time, the Medusa that shows up in Hollywood, novels, and games is basically an OC. She only has a superficial resemblance to the Medusa of ancient myths, no matter what variation or era of said myth.

There is so much untapped potential. But the people in charge of character designs just hand us the same old shit warmed over and everyone eats it up as if it's the finest of cuisines.

The contemporary medusa depiction has a lot of antecedents in art, if not in myth. It's been a while, but IIRC the art predates the myths. Or at least the versions of the myths we have access to. Stories that incorporate the monsters, giving them personalities and backstories, might not have been their first iteration. Rather, they might have incorporated more nebulous folk beliefs into a narrative. So looking back for the "original" through the myth might be imagining what people think of mothman based only on X Files episodes, even though the X Files has probably added and subtracted elements from the folk belief it's based on.

Being a massive bitch/asshole is a domain common to all Greek gods.

Except for maybe Hestia. I think. Might just be more that she basically never has a major role in any of the more commonly-known myths.

Funnily enough, Hades is just about the chillest guy in the Patheon.

Except for that one time he kidnapped some girl, but that turned out alright

I'd assumed the curse took effect while Poseidon was in the process of rape. Having the women turn into a snake monster was presumably not his magical realm.

even then, he did technically follow the proper procedure at the time, and thus didn't do anything wrong.

>Also if you look at the myth, Athena was a real bitch to curse Medusa
In the original, or at least older, myth Medusa and her sisters are just monsters.
The whole being raped and cursed thing came a good deal later. Basically some dude writing fanfiction.

Owners of that particular one say they get along fine but in feeding time they get confused and may try and attack each other, so it's pretty much mandatory to feed both of them a little bit each.
