This is RUINING numerous breakfasts with terrifying fetal chickens.

In my setting I have egg magic, which is kind of like the thing where you hatch a serpent's egg under a chicken for a basilisk and/or a chicken's egg under a serpent for a cockatrice, but + some more creatures and a dedicated breeding effort.

The most common product is a kind of scaleless crocodile which stares are you real hard and you burst into flames. One of the churches uses them. Later, egg magic became a bunch of other stuff because one of the people involved figured out how to use eggs to store and enhance/mutate spells.

After a hardcore pub crawl in which everyone has a spotty memory of at best, the party bard lays a mysterious green egg.

7. A mountain range turns out to be the shell fragments of a single enormous egg. An excavation team discovers a similar intact egg underneath.

8. The caviar harvested from the salmon of knowledge will instantly answer one question of anyone who eats it.

9. All dragon eggs have been hatching degenerate mindless reptile monsters for the last 500 years. True dragons are dying out.

10. A torrent of random street fires sparks concern that what was thought to just be a very hot summer may be a phoenix egg buried under the city.

11. Anything organic the egg touches is absorbed by it, and every time it happens it grows larger and changes colour. Nobody knows what it is going to hatch.

12. A disgraced cleric has figured out how to reincarnate the souls of an enemy into a specific egg, and plans to assassinate his foes and then trap them in an eternal cycle of torment.

Egg spellcasting is you write your spell on the egg in a particular way and the egg absorbs it. Whatever is inside the egg (it has to be a fertilized egg) dies and the spell is changed by its death. So it naturally plays into breeding magical creatures with egg swaps, because different creatures produce different effects.

It can get very complex (you can learn to use more than one egg) and the best places to study it are certain central monasteries of the church of universal flame, where monks end up with enough time on their hands to just do some gardening and invent heredity.

So I don't play an edition of D&D with "Summon Steed" (that said, not like I have every spell and combo figured out anyway) and you can't, or at least it's strict doctrine you can't, do egg magic with dragon eggs. The church of the universal flame HATES dragons.

But the thing in the egg dies. So the second dragon thing would probably be horrible, because you'd be summoning a dragon via magic created by killing a dragon fetus and burning its essence to change your spell. As to the first, I'm not sure what I would decide on - it seems like you can already summon an intelligent dragon with that spell, but maybe that's fine because sometimes egg magic is just like a spellbook anyway.

I should mention you cast the spell by cracking the egg, because I haven't yet.

This riddle always pisses me off. It has a simple answer.

The Egg of Gallus gallus domesticus came before the first true Gallus gallus domesticus. This is because the direct ancestor of the Chicken had to lay the egg that would eventually become the chicken.

Eggs are basically bombs/shells that are hurled from the back of behemoths(tanks) or dropped by dragons(aircraft).
People were routinely sacrificed to create more magic stuff as souls or something were the cheapest way to make eggs

It was fantastic, shame it wasnt more popular.
