The Free Worlds League Parliament to the Steiner Archon!
>O Archon, Lyran devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of ruler are you, that can't slay a leech locust with your naked arse? The Usurper shits, and your army eats. You will not, you bitch of bitches, make subjects of Free World sons; we've no fear of your army, By land and by space we will spit in thy face, fuck your mother
>You Kuritan scullion, Liao mech-wright, torturer of Tamir, brother-fucker of Tharkad, swineherd of Skye, pig of the Pleiades, rascal of Rasalhague, Circinian cunt, hangman of Kentares, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, granddaughter of the Usurper, and the crick in our prick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw your own father!
>So the Free Worlds declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Mariks. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!

Hey guys I've just woken up from a 16 year coma and I'm looking to getting back into Battletech. I used to play Word of Blake, Clan Blood Spirit, and the Circinus Federation and I'm just wondering what I should buy to catch up.

So, I'm presently GMing a campaign set during the Clan Invasion, mostly using Warchest and Megamek. I'm wondering, just to prevent the occasionally very lopsided scenarios that Warchest turns out with, what might be some good curveballs to toss at the Clan player beyond the usual vehicle/trap/ambush shennanigans?
>>
>>49265289
>Word of Blake

Why do people like them? They're obviously the bad guys. Remember Myndo Waterly? They're like her.
>>
>>49265289
The giant Intro box set with the Atlas on it is a great buy to start you off. Gets you a pile of minis and the current rules.

Get the 4th printing of Total Warfare if you want the everything-and-the-kitchen sink rules. Add Tactical Operations to that if you want to replace the old Maximum Tech book (aka, add another sink to your current one).

Also, Blood Spirit is dead. RIP.

Just have faith in TPTB to do the right thing. They'll pay attention to the FWL when the plot needs them to.
>>
>>49266094
I dunno. Give them a smaller, weaker opfor, but also an equally reduced amount of time to kill them in? Or, they need to capture a certain pilot alive, or a certain proportion of the enemy alive.

Or, enemies can voluntarily shut down on the field to make themselves worth only half victory points
>>
>>49266094
>what might be some good curveballs to toss at the Clan player beyond the usual vehicle/trap/ambush shennanigans?
Terrain and force composition that disproportionately plays to IS strength (like say Hunchbacks and Awesomes in a plains-plains mountainous heavy woods map set-up)
>>
>>49270497

>Just have faith in TPTB to do the right thing.

I don't know whether to laugh or to cry.

>>49266094

Civil unrest or guerilla combat. Those were only sucessful against the Smoke Jags but every Clan had to deal with them to some extent. Also ComStar dickbaggery.

Force selection wise LosTech has been retconned to be widely available prior to the Clan invasion so if you want to go nuts with upgraded designs feel free.
>>
>>49272297

The next mission is an assault mission, so there's going to be an urban map. He's going to be allowed a full binary, so I'm thinking a merc company on the heavier end with a couple Lostech mechs?
>>
>>49272422

Mercs are still kinda screwed for advanced gear until the mid-50s, the advanced tech was fairly widespread but confined to House militaries. It's be unusual (ie, Kell Hound/Wolf Dragoon) but not absolutely impossible.

If it's an urban fight don't even bother with 'Mechs. Just spam infantry, Hetzer/Demolishers and SRM carriers from hiding, not many Clan machines have Active Probes or anti-infantry weapons.
>>
>>49272487

Heh, now that's an idea. It'd probably drive him nuts, and it'd be fun for BA on infantry action.
>>
i would actually play that xtro primitives orion. it's a pocket assault that still manages to outperform a chunk of the tro 3025 actual assaults.

Was a pretty good bit of work for the night. Last night's defence didn't net me much butthis round was pretty amazing. Didn't lose any mechs or pilots (Few mechs in a bad state but I've got enough reserves to keep all 3 lances at decent strength) and netted 40mil in salvage.

Got two Stalkers already so I'm scrapping the new ones for spares. One of the thuds is salvage only, the other Thud and BM I'm keeping.

Hmm okay thanks. Upon checking version numbers it seems that the SSW I have is 4 versions behind. I'll just grab the new SSW and Master files.

The last time I played Megamek it had a bug where it would fire machinegun arrays a number of times per turn equal to the number of machineguns in the array. And it would crash if I tried to use mech mortars. That was years ago though, hopefully it's been fixed. With the new game by Harebrained Studios in the works I got an urge to mess around with Megamek botmatches again.

Battletech is unpopular because it is uncanny valley. People don't like things that hit so close to home when they want to just play with giant robutts.

Well, that and it's one of the most poorly handled IPs in the history of tabletop gaming.

I've been trying out refits in Megameklab but there seems to be a bug: I load up a Victor-9B and set the tech level from "introductory" to "standard" to pull the AC/20 and screw on the LB-10X, but the weapons like ERLL and LB-10X never show up in the equipment tab. Instead, I get shit like a rivet gun. What bothers me is that MML used to work like that for me, and now it seems to have shat the bed. Am I just missing something?

So I realised if I ripped off the turret on a Behemoth tank and put a 300 Fusion engine in it then max out the armor, I still have 32t leff for armaments. Should I mount an Arrow IV? If I do, what else should I go for?

I think I can reasonably fit a UAC20, RAC5, 2 tons of ammo for each and all with Case.
>>
>>49292034
I'd say leave the turret, and just improve the armor without maxing it. Maxing armor on 100 ton tanks is iffy, since chances are they'll get critted to death before that.
At the least maybe consider using heavy ferro-fibrous to shave some armor weight off, since heavier vehicles can use it a lot more easily than any mech can.

Is there some way of adjusting Princessbot's murderosity towards ejected pilots? Because some Independent (Periphery) bastard just gave a full broadside on my ejected 3/4 company second in command, despite having live 'Mechs in the area. And no, I'm not bitter.

In fact, I think the bot has always really had it in for ejected Mechwarriors. Take this psycho I had to cover once as an example. If memory serves, he was a 5/6 and hadn't hit anything in the entire battle. Then I brew up this unlucky sod's ride and this happens. There were two other enemies present, but apparently target selection is something that happens to other people.
>>
>>49292306
You are now absolutely fucked unless a target is in your front arc. And since you're not generating a TMM as a 100 ton tank, and you don't have the advanced motive system that will reduce your chances of getting pillboxed, you're doubly fucked. An angry LB-10 unit will plink you to death from the sides.

I'd say the bigger problem is the ranges he's working with. You can get away with fixed arcs better when you've got some range to work with, but this thing is overall just mid range, the HGR's long range may as well not exist as it's is simply too wasteful, a standard GR would be better at that point, and turret mounting simply isn't an option.

Like I said, it'd be better using heavy ferro if it's going to keep all that armor, doing that and dropping the AV by a measly 4 points would free up 2.5 tons so it can to keep a turret that can carry 25 tons, enough to mount both the UAC and RAC in the second config, so it can at least better handle the closer ranges its weapons are oriented for.

Hello people
I am a new-ish BT player, as I know of most of the basic general rules and lore, but only recently started to play the boardgame, thanks to some new people getting interested in my group
Is it possible to turn it into some kind of "campaign" with linked missions and a bit of resource management ala Imperial Assault?
Are there actual rules for it?
Where I can find some nice scenarios/missions?
>>
>>49304985
Better. I'd think a RAC5 would be a better choice, though. Trade the MPLs for SPLs to rape infantry with, and use the freed tonnage to mount a RAC5 and more ammo.

current rules are in "campaign operations." old versions can usually be found it books with "mercenary" in the title. The early editions of the RPG also had a system, as did the "tactical handbook" (earlier than and different from "Tactical Operations").

I think the current place to find scenarios/missions is in books with "chaos" in the title. old out of print stuff were called "scenario books" ("chaos march," "explorer corp" and "hot spots" also had mission contracts).

>>
>>49307599
They figured out all that legalese back in 2008. It's why we have the old school 25 Years of Art and Fiction. What tanked that was the secret settlement that nobody but apparently HG and Jordan knew about. So the current thing is "Close but still different enough to get around the settlement."

They're all pretty good too, minus the locust. And not even because it's ugly, but because it looks like a tiny marauder with flippy arms instead of a locust.

I'm still certain that the best way to bring about a true second Star League would have been to have Victor marry Omi Kurita, Isis Marik, Danai Centrella and Kali Liao, and whoever they could have found in the Outworlds Alliance and the Taurian Concordat. After that, you could move to the Clans, since the Green Birds had Marthe Pryde and Samantha Clees and the Care Bears had Aletha Kabrinski.

Truly the power of the harem and tied royal bloodlines has been underrated.

The biggest fuckup would be the Capellan March now being leaderless. Old school FASA would have probably handed that football to Justin and folded all of St Ives into the Capellan March, even if realistically they would have pulled a Hasek out of their ass from somewhere.

Lyran MechWarriors are some of the best trained ever. It's their operational and strategic leadership that's poor.

All this Lyran talk reminded me to go see what happened to Timbiqui.

>LAAF apparently has it back in 3079 and only makes references to driving off a pirate attack, not retaking the world

What the hell?
>>

Where the FWL is involved there are a lot of gaps in writing. For instance they took Denebola in Operation Guerrero since it's a member of the Border Protectorate, but then in FM:U it's listed as being Lyran again.

Command Lance
Cyclops (commander)
Orion
Rifleman

Assassin (independent scout)

Jump and stomp lance
Grasshoppersx2
Crusader
Catapult

Trooping demi lance
Thud
Victor

The 5/8 catchup crew
Osts

Basically you can group the Troop demi lance with the jumpers on flat terrain as backup or with the command lance for extra protection. The OST's are reinforcements that you can slip around wherever because they got good direct firepower and move faster than the standard 4/6 of the rest of them. They're about the only things you got that can chase the standard 5/8 mediums you'll probably encouner on the field.

Then just let the Assassin be the Assassin. An overgrown light.

Hey, does anybody have the Field Manual: Free Worlds League pdf? I can't find it. Have the Housebook and the Handbook but no field manual.
>>
>>49317960

Not particularly. It's the Dracs wo have the best academies and churn out the most skilled and trained of the House militaries, followed then by the FWL and Caps. It's just that everyone except the Suns immediately goes HURR DURR for the entire period between their first deployment and when they muster out, while Suns personnel turn into fucking super geniuses.

>>49315862

Tech recovery is still right around the corner and the Suns rebuilt more of that infrastructure than anyone but the FWL. It probably hurts for a little while and Lyran merchant shipping makes a tidy profit before new facilities come on-line in the early to mid-50s. Might delay the appearance of the Fox for a year or two, tops.

Honestly, the CRD probably belongs in the "command" lance as well, but the Davion model is at least acceptable in a scout-command role, and stiffens the rest of your explosive fast-boys. f I had the option, I'd probably swap it for a PXH or a Wolverine, though.

So I've been reading up on the rules for the first time in a while (Only really play megamek) and I read that firing HGRs requires a PSR if you move and fire.

I want to design the smallest possible HGR mech in the vein of the Hollander. Like the Cricket from men in black, I want something that can run up to a target and then blow itself back in the opposite direction after destroying whatever stands in its way.
>>
>>49323379

There's already a HGR Hollander, the -F7. It's about as light as you can go while still getting anything usable out of the attempt.

It can also kill itself by firing the HGR.

Favorite light? Probably Venom-9KC
3MPL, Much needed DHS, 8/12/8. C3, and punchan hands. Beefier than the original Venom.

Because while a true recon mech has rarely been needed in my games, very mobile strikers that can reliably hit and harass are handy.

It's like an anemic little Wraith.

...Though I've got to say that a combination of CGL suddenly loving to push mixtech/tacops/field-manual-exclusive stuff means that I've not had much of a chance to experiment with the new tech. There might be better toys that are available to me now. Then again, I play Drac, so probably not a whole lot. I'm playing in said era with AtB, but I'm only facing and using what shows up in RATs from FM: 3145 or earlier, at this time.

The Wolfhound (both the -1 in the 3025ies and the -2 in the Clan era) is probably my favourite, since it's fighty enough and not that fragile. After that, the Panther (great for giving fire support with the PPC and a good driver) and the Locust, especially the all-laser variant.

I realize this is probably unsurprising, but the Urbie -AIV. Mainly because the existence of the Mech at all is my (and the Battle Pope's) fault.

Otherwise, the Unseen Vixen and the Kit Fox S among Clan Mechs. Panther and the COM-1B Commando in 3025. I've got a standard Javelin in a 3044-era AtB campaign that has a huge number of kills (34 kills in 14 missions); the performance of the mech has actually surprised and impressed me. The WLF-2 and WLF-3S in advanced-tech play, for obvious reasons, although the WLF-1 Allard variant is absolutely brutal (cERPPC, x3 cERML, 12 DHS, Tcomp). Finally I really enjoy fielding the Ebony, but holy hell does it look like shit.

Probably the -7Ga in pic related, which is a 9S that actually has armor and more than a ton of ammo for the LRM. The -8Ga (I iterate names badly, if no one can tell yet) would be an alternate, adding an XLFE so it can have a Gauss, in units not lucky enough to get a Devastator or a Nightstar. Some variants need to exist, because not everyone gets the best toys.

>>49325800

Depends on what you mean by "optimal".

I like running around in something like this: it loses a little bit of long-range firepower (SNPPC instead of an ERLL, and 1 LRM from the battery) in exchange for more survivability (LFE instead of the more common XLFE) and having a truly mean - and heat-neutral - up-close battery.

Do note that if mixtech is an option, a straight swap of the ERPPC for a cERPPC and maxing out the armor is strictly better, though.

>>49325319

Not to my memory. I will say that that's a pretty huge project. There's a LOT of SLN ship classes, and you'd have to go year-by-year, since their use (or lack thereof) would change as new classes come online.

>>
>>49325931
That 7Ga is honestly reminds me more of the 5T, right down to the ArtIV.
Main difference is 5T has FF instead of ES, so it still has one ton of LRM ammo but still lacks CASE so it's not necessarily all bad, and the AV bumps only to 224.

>>
what changes would you make to intro tech rules if any?
>>
>>49327091
The optional rapid fire autocannon rules are now standard. Optional rapid fire machine guns are now standard. TAC's are now standard. Forceful startup and shutdown are standard. Extreme and LOS range brackets are now standard.

So not a ton really.
>>
>>49327091
floating crits
>>
>>49327091
CASE is baseline on every mech for free, regular CASE becomes CASE II (and the Clans get it at .25 tons), and CASE II stops cascading crits. Which isn't introtech, but what the hell.
>>
>>49327091

Introtech is Clantech. 3025 tech is eliminated entirely.
>>
>>49327602
What about CASE being on a per-ton basis, with CASE II staying the same but CASE costing x% of the ammo in a bin instead of taking up more crits and weight?
>>
>>49327930
Because that means rewriting all of the mechs with CASE, and that's a gigantic pain in the ass. This way, you just have to say CASE is on the mech unless otherwise noted. Unless you want to redo thousands of units.

Not an introtech option, but vehicles get the option of 10 SHS or 5 DHS standard, and vees can have DHS, but any heat not used completely is considered wasted and doesn't reduce heat damage.
>>
>>49327998
That is a major thing to work around, you can't change construction rules without invalidating everything. Doing so would fuck the whole lot.

Call it iCASE. We already have c3i and iNarc.
>>
>>49327091
change movement modifiers to disfavor standing still to shoot
reduce forward arc to one hexside, and flank the rear arc with "rear sides" arcs, so each armor location has its own hexside
change how heat works to make ballistic weapons more competitive
change initiative to somehow incentivize light units, but also disincentivize swarms
add basic campaign rules which disincentivize fighting to the death- like, anything powered down voluntarily gets half repairs for free, anything retreated gets full repairs for free, anything active and on the field at game end can only be fixed with matching salvage

>>49327558
floating crits away from the torso helps heavier mechs more than lighter mechs. would be nice if there were another way to implement that.

I love the Raven, but the best thing you can do with it is to replace the NARC with another weapon system. Then it becomes a pretty good brawler as well as a scout. Conversely, upping the engine at the cost of the NARC is good too, leaving everything else as-is. But my personal favorite is stripping the NARC, putting JJs on it, and using the rest to split the difference on dual MML launchers. Makes it tactically flexible as all hell and compensates well for the base speed. Basically, a modified 4Lr

That's some sexy Hollander fanart, and it's one of my favorite Lights to boot. I have a soft spot for the Locust, as well as the Liao Wasp. For some reason, the Wasp L just flat always kills above its BV for me most times; I feel like it's my lucky 'Mech. Lights and Mediums are my favorite chassis, so it's hard to pick honestly. Raven gets a mention, since at the time I liked how it was a pretty neat approach to a beleaguered faction re-arming and getting with the times. I would really have liked if the Cappies hadn't become the secondary Gausswall faction, but eh. Gimme AIV, TAG, and AC/20s all day for them, honestly. But I digress. I love the Hussar for being a glass cannon, and the Panther for being a Light trooper. Etc etc ad nauseum. In all honestly, pic related is probably my favorite Light chassis. I just wish it had a variant that swapped in SRM4s or a Medium Laser for the TAG as a bodyguard unit. The laserboat version is nice and all, but I mean something less thoroughly re-designed.

Man, now I want to make a custom faction that can only manufacture Lights and Mediums, but is capable of designing new chassis and not forced to just fart out bugs and trios. Maybe it's because they have limited resources? I dunno, do I really need a reason? BATTLETECH.
