Alright let me break this down. First, your absolutely right, under some circumstances. More troops is a good thing, for a modern army. It doesn't neccisarily apply to medieval armies. First off Prior to the advent of firearms, and even after, fighting is very physically demanding. Sexual dymorphism is a thing, unless you handwoven that away for your fantasy setting, so women will not make as capable soldiers as males. Period. They can't fight as hard, or as long as a male soldier could. Second the concept of total war did not develop until the 1800s. Armies generally speaking only took a small portion of the male population. There were a few reasons for this. One, they were expensive, and the more troops ypu have the more expensive it's going to be. Two every man you pulled away from home was one less man to do work. Fields still needed to be planted harvests still needed to be brought in, and every man you take is one less to so that. This is relevant because 1 why would you pay for an inferior soldier? and 2 who do you think picked up the slack? Women. That's who. Realistically if you wanted a bigger army you pull more men, because realistically you still have most of your population back home. Your very unlikely to be desperate enough for bodies that you say fuck it let's pull even the women, we need fucking everyone, unless your in a total war situation, which can't happen without industrial processes. Maybe I can see it if your being invaded and it's a desperate last defense, but if your taking the field I can see no reason to take female soldiers in large numbers for a pre gunpowder army. This is not to say women were not part of military ventures in the time period. There would be women. They were camp followers, a neccisary part of the army, but not combatants.

One of the reasons that women have never had a large battlefield role historically (aside from physical or cultural reasons) is simply that the loss of women slows the recovery of a country after the war has finished. If a country loses half of its men--well that's fucked, but the number of wombs in the country stays the same. The number of potential children in the next generation stays the same.

If a country loses half of its women, though--or even a quarter--that moves the hard cap for population replenishment down significantly. Dead women are a disaster, there's a reason it's always women and children first--it's a practical concern. They are literally more valuable than the men.

And this isn't some modern fancy either, the Romans understood this very well. When the Cimbri invaded their allies, they more or less just ignored it because a bit of pillage and raiding wasn't that big of a problem. Germans do that all the time.

But when the Senate heard that the Cimbri had brought their women with them, they panicked and recalled Marius from Africa or some shit to come kill them all, because if an army brought its women with it, it was going all-in. Full conquest was the only possible motive.

Yes, magic deals with the problems of pre-modern medicine, allows the use of things like ents and animated statues to cut down on loss of life in warfare and allow the women to safely fight as archers, and provides protection through various wards and shields. You could probably even magically grow children if things were really fucked.

You're an archer. You get a mallet and a knife. If things are going shitty, you retreat. If things are going well, depending on how orderly they are withdrawing you either chill, or if it's a route you advance behind the knights and take the opportunity to jump on downed enemy knights and smash the mallet into their head while the army chases after the foe to slaughter them.

Dragging your prey back home is not a concern for a hunter unless they are just Oregon Trail-style shooting every single living thing they see. A hunter can be selective in what he's hunting unless this is some kind of survival situation and he'll starve to death in three days if he doesn't get something the size of a deer right now. The presence of huntresses in mythology should show that there were enough huntresses that it wasn't unheard of to at least some cultures for there to be women who would pick up a bow and take several hounds into the wilderness with them. I doubt these women were usually dragging bears back with them, so we can pretty safely assume they were sticking to things like rabbits, foxes, martins, smaller things in general. Not all members of a profession do their work in exactly the same way, especially a field as varied as hunting where you can enlist animals to do much the work for you.

I'm really, REALLY going to need you to get specific here, because it sounds like you're extrapolating a hell of a lot.

Anyways, since you've never been hunting, let me clue you in on the different types.

Tracking - It's fucking bullshit. Do it only opportunistically or if you're traveling.

Ambush hunting - now this is how you get fucking fed. You get off your ass and walk all over your land to find animal trails. Animals actually use trails consistently, that's why you can fucking find them. For small game you're going to be looking for scat, or for shit they like to eat. And you're going to put a bunch of snares out. Not all in one spot, because if you do catch you the rest are pretty much a guarantee to fuck off. So you put them at several place by dens and burrows and preferred food.

Second, for bigger game - and

Is actually a concern. You can starve to death eating yourself full of rabbit. Predators taste bad and have a higher risk for disease and parasite transmission.

So you set up a blind along a trail or where the big game sleeps, and you wait for them to come by. May take several days. Still quicker and more consistent than tracking, and much more energy efficient.

It's a solid game. Only downside to the Warrior class(dudes with large 2handers) is their limited special attack slots: 3 vs everyone else's two. But admittedly, they only need two of their skills to rape anything that doesn't fly.

The popeye armed archer is a myth if it was a universal truth every single damn skeleton on the Mary Rose would have the same difformity, as best as the authors of the study could tell it was either the result of poor habits (diet, technique) or that they started training before the bones fused.

More importantly, english longbows were shit because they passed the point of diminishing returns sometime around 100 pounds draw and the english just kept going until it was really really fucking obvious that cannons and muskets were the better option.

The HP isn't that bad, even with pawns. The rage mechanic was pretty bad before 2.0 because with pawns you'd just spend 10 minutes tugging that ogre's ass, then do 1 minute of damage before repeating the process.

The real issue is the metric shittons of grinding. Levelling is clearly paced around the paid xp boosters and then there are the weekend raids for materials/equipment that of course don't give you give you any exp. And you can't be carried because there's a massive penalty for level differences in a party.

Not the even mention that an optimal build requires you to level up 3-4 classes.

Normally though when archers lose all their ammunition they simply become really shoddy light infantry. In most medieval battles they wouldn't be called up to do much fighting as they were almost exclusively drawn as peasant levies.

Essentially they'd simply wait for the outcome of the battle and if it were a seriously dire situation be ordered to plug a gap but the chances of them doing anything useful without their main weapons was relatively low.

In a fantasy game ranged classes with bows typically are given some other form of engagement that makes them useful beyond their mere arrow shooting. Normally I try to deploy traps and have my allies lure them into them or search out weak points or try to harvest arrows from the fallen.

The Mage progression in Dragon's Dogma is particularly phenomenal. Often magic in vidya is not as impressive in practice as it might be in the lore.

In DD you go from punching out a few fireballs (but still getting cool stuff, like the lightning whip) to feeling like the fucking world is yours to command. Storms of meteors, earthquakes, huge columns of ice and this motherfucker right here.

Distance is your friend, even in a hunt.

Yes you can hunt with a spear cheaply but consider the flowing.

You are a peasant, a farmer or low caste worker of some sort. Bronze and Iron is very expensive, so much so that they are rarely even used for the tools you have of your trade. But you need to hunt, you need a weapon to put down wild pigs, birds or animals that can wreck havoc on your food supply if they go unchecked.

Sure you could make a spear out of a wooden shaft and stone head, or spend some of your hard earned money for a proper spearhead. Then chase down a wild boar, get uncomfortably close to it with your friends and a few trained dogs. then stick the tusked bastard and hope you kill it.

Or, you can make a bow out of nothing more than wood and simple cord, arrows out of wood, feather, sinew and knapped stone heads, or even a much smaller quantity of bronze or iron. And stalk that same boar by yourself or 1 other friend. Bring it down by yourself from a much safer range and feed your family.

You can use the bow to hunt birds, small game, even fish with it and in a pinch protect yourself and family. A simple bow is pretty cheap to make, unless your defining "spear" as long pointy stick.
