Tieflings are not small in any D&D edition.
"Short pointy eared magical race" is basically the gnomes' schtick.
Also, height is positively correlated with attractiveness. Elves are the Designated Sexy Race in almost every core setting. That means sexy traits (hairlessness below the neck, flexibility, low percentage body fat, pointy ears) are all going to get relegated to the Elf pile.
Short people are not sexy, and therefore elves must be tall.
