How does someone get started with 40k?
Just as a collector I mean. Army list crunch aside, what's a good start for paints, tools, models, etc.

Check Ebay
First, you need to understand pauldrons...
Pick the models that you think are cool.
Hobby stores should be able to let you know what's up with paint
You gonna want an exacto knife and one of those really tiny brushes. Also a base-coat spray, forget what those are called

Did this. Ended up with a CSM army.
2/10, would not recommend.

What you want to do is strap dollar bills to you're clothing. Noticing your scent, GW employees will approach you. Cautious at first, you must then bid them to compete with one another in order to devulge their secrets in exchange for a "fat commish". Only then will you arrive at the best bargain possible, as they secretly divulge the inferiority of their products in an effort to get you to buy their pre-packaged sales bundles.

If I were a more daring man, I would seek out the internet forums on 4chan, in the deepest darkest recesses of the internet, where GW employees go to share their hard won secrets and blackmail material in exchange for a chance at procuring e-bay mini lots with which they resell and derive sustenance.
I have heard rumors of secret recasters and even a mysterious demi-god they refer to as "based chinaman" who delivers perfect reprints at a fraction of the cost.
But Beware! The chinaman brooks no interference in his affairs! If you do not have a native GW employee to vouch for you, you will be placed on his blocked contacts list, forever denied the treasures of the ancient orient.

Ebay my friend! Look for pre-painted models, the shittier the job, the better, then strip the shitty paint once you get them.
I'm no collector, but my 500 points of crons are worth around $120 in GW official prices, I paid $45 for them.

1) Take out $1000 in cash.
2) Burn it with a lighter while crying and masturbating, in no particular order.
3) Could you handle it? Did you like it?
4) If the answer to 3) was "Yes", you're now ready to get into Warhammer. It will cost you more, and hurt you more, and each year it'll probably get harder to masturbate.
