Pathfinder General /pfg/

Friendly reminder to tell us what 3pp your game allows if you need character building help.

How would you make merfolk great again and actually balanced for a land and sea campaign?

Paizo had published a strategy guide that explains basic mechanics, has a "what type of character fits my style" quiz and build guides for the different types. The big problem imo is that it is only core. It is serviceable for what it does, though, and it may be a good book to check if you can get it.

Question for those who have checked out the new Shadow Sentinel from the LV:V playtest;

Do you think the abilities that replace vigilante talents should be made into options? What about the shadow magic ability, think that should also be optional? I think both could probably be made optional, since nothing completely hinges on them.

The amulet of mighty fists was changed to only cost as much as weapon enhancements, and if you have a friendly druid you can get permanent greater magic fang for much cheaper. Also the unchained monk is pretty good.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd-eyed_cat#Deafness_in_odd-eyed_cats

>There is a common misconception that all odd-eyed cats are born deaf in one ear. This is not true, as about 60%–70% of odd-eyed cats can hear.[4] About 10%–20% of normal-eyed cats are born deaf or become deaf as part of the feline aging process.[4] White cats with one or two blue eyes do, however, have a higher incidence of genetic deafness, with the white gene occasionally causing the degeneration of the cochlea, beginning a few days after birth.[13] If a white kitten has any speck of another color, the frequency of deafness is greatly diminished, even if the speck of coloration fades as the cat becomes more mature.[citation needed]

This one is blonde, not white haired.

>>49208505

They do not deal with tiers, sadly, and focus on the core material only (though imo unchained rogues and monks are used in every recent version of the game, so they may as well be).

It is not great for optimization purposes, it is there so a completely new person has some idea what a class is supposed to do.

I give it a very small bonus point for mentioning strength and wisdom as a monk's main stats, with dexterity and constitution as secondary. It almost immediately loses it when talking about armor. saying that you should look out for rings and amulets and not even mentioning mage armor.

I still think it is a passable if no one has ever played PF or if you want to get an initial opinion, but I would not trust it for everything. Still, if you are a newfag with a torrent, it is something.

>>
>>49209042
Frustration is exactly what I'm aiming to encourage in this case, I just want to make sure it doesn't grow from frustration for the PCs to frustration for their players. My players are basically getting periodically sniped at by a ghost while exploring the area he haunts, and he's basically harassing them occasionally. When they find the specific place he actually died though, he'll fight to the re-death. I want that victory to be extra satisfying, so I've got three points on my map where the ghost will take a cheap shot before flying away while laughing.

Hi ladies and gents, what would you think of houserules where taking the improved X feat (for maneuvers, TWF etc) immediately gave you greater X as soon as you met the prerequisites? I am thinking of collating some feats together, i.e.weapon focus as well.

My main issue is that I do not want spell focus to immediately give you GSF. Maybe put a prerequisite requiring a certain caster level?

The nuclear response (insofar as 5th level characters have one) is exactly what I'm hoping they'll pull out. If they're that fucking pissed off at the ghost when they finally have its back to the metaphorical wall, they should feel all the more satisfied when it's taken out, a feeling which will neatly coincide with the conclusion of a pretty important arc of my campaign.

I'm just not sure if maybe this is a horrible idea on my part and I'm just blind to some obvious bad DMing or something. None of the shots the enemy is firing at the party are enough to kill or even KO anyone, but it is just enough damage that the party will want to drop some heals before moving on.

Quick question,

My google-fu isn't up to par apparently and I can't find a straight answer, with magical item creation, the DC for the spellcraft check is 5 + the CL of the item + 5 per missed prereqs.

My question is, and please forgive me for sounding like a fucking dumbass, is the CL listed next to the market cost of a magical item is the CL used for the spellcraft check?

For example a headband of alluring charisma has a CL of 8, would that then make the spellcraft DC 13, assuming all prereqs are met? Or is the CL something else entirely?

The FAQ
>>
>>49209855
You can make an item with a lower than listed CL though, which reduces the DC.
>>
>>49209855
>>49209870
>>49209902
This is exactly why I'm failing to get this.

So take the headband of alluring charisma and lets say we're a cleric. You need to be able to cast Eagle's Splendor, which requires a level 4 cleric, which would require a minimum caster level of 4.

Would the spellcraft DC be 9 (base 5 + 4 CL) or would it be 13 (base 5 + Listed 13)?

F-list?
>>
>>49209971
The DC is 5+the caster level of the item. Not your caster level. You can make items at a lower caster level than your own but this doesn't effect the DC. The caster level of the item is not actually a requirement that needs to be met. That cleric can make that headband despite being level 4 with a 13 DC spellcraft check.

Usually, you don't. Because Paizo are fucking hacks.

There's no counter-item, and only Tetoris can deal with it at all, and even then at a cost of 1 ki per round.

It's a swift action to use though. You just use it, and then you can grapple them. For that turn.

How are Merfolk not balanced for land and sea campaigns? They've got some nice abilities for low level characters but it mostly loses relevance past level 6.

The fact that their land-speed is all of 5ft does kinda cut down on their mobility, but you can pick your class to be able to get around that. Kineticist has a few options to increase your options within a few levels, and given that one of their favored class options is Sorcerer just getting som pillows and making sure that floating disk is on your spells known list can probably keep you covered in the short term.

At 3rd level and past, if you're playing a more martially-minded merfolk you can take Squire and get some big critter to carry you around while you either lance-charge with them or take archery potshots from a distance.

Arcanist has some teleportation exploits to work with move actions, but it's limited to spending from your reserves.

I'm not as familliar with PF psionics and the like but I'd bet there's something to work with there. if there's a translation of the Elocator from Expanded Psionics in there then you've got an easy solution there.

Heck, since it's still a land speed boost, you could stack up a level dip or two that gives Fast movement and just do the Magicarp Uses Flail and fish flop your way through life at rapid speeds.

Because they're too good. +2 to three stats, with no penalties.

This, I made many trippers/grapplers, but Magus and Barb (only played paizo splats) seem to be the most reliable at the job.

Be a caster as well and cast antimagic field. IIRC all such effects are supernatural, therefore suppressed in an AMF.

>no penalties.

I just gave a post listing the class options neccessary for them to be functional outside of an aquatic environment. In a Land AND Sea campaign, they are at a significant disadvantage without some means of overcoming that mobility issue for however much of the campaign needs them on land.

+2 to 3 stats is good, sure, but actual class levels make that, along with the rest of its kit, insignificant in the long run. Unless your problem is with folks surviving the first few levels of the game (something of which is by no means ensured by those stats at low levels, simply slightly off set) then I fail to see how it's too potent in comparison.

-5 penalty.
>>
When you use maneuvers which grant you extra damage, is that damage weapon based or untyped? Basically, if you use a blunt weapon and use a maneuver on a zombie, will it soak up the 5 from it's damage reduction from the weapon damage, or will it get a damage reduction on the maneuver as well? Or is the maneuver damage extra damage like sneak attack and other precision damage, untyped or what have you? I know some maneuvers have descriptors in their explanation, but some just say that you do extra damage.

For instance. Outer sphere stance from Thrashing dragon

When wielding two weapons while in this stance, the disciple gains +1d6 points of damage with his weapons and suffers a -2 penalty to AC. The AC penalty to this decreases by 1 once the character's initiator level reaches 8th, and is negated at 16th initiator level. Upon reaching 10th initiator level, the bonus damage increases to 2d6.

Would the DR to that type of weapon soak up the damage from the extra it gives?

>>49210882
>Would the DR to that type of weapon soak up the damage from the extra it gives?

Yes. If your Thrashing Dragon dude was using two clubs (1d6 blunt damage) each club would be doing 2d6 blunt damage. If he was using sword swords (1d6 slashing) each sword would do 2d6 slashing. If he used a (fire) Elemental Flux maneuver with a club, he'd do 1d6 bashing and 1d6 fire.

21st and probably final update. Includes mostly just typo fixes, and a slightly expanded skill list to let them play a rogue-ish role in a party and so it lined up nicely in layout.

Been a lot of fun, thanks for all the feedback I've gotten, and I hope anyone who actually plays one enjoys it. Tune in next time for some other oddball concept when I get the chance.
>>
>>49211332
I was using some 3rd edition rules with feats and a prestige class that turned you into an illithid. My character spent a lot of time fighting with the voice in his head.
>>
>>49210952
I'm considering using these for my party. One of them failed a lycanthropy save a few sessions ago and their current adversaries are looking to make use of the next big lunar event, but I'm not sure if I should just apply the template for it, or start using this variant, or even just give him a 1/day Beast Shape with a specific creature limitation.

3 failed saves and you're out of a character. It's not interesting, it's excessively punishing.
>>
>>49211724
Savant rings more like a skill monkey to me.
>>
>>49211710
My personal distaste of the system comes from the extreme penalties for failing, the brevity of it. Like you could be corrupted for 2 sessions then be a npc for the rest of it. And lastly the fact some of the corruptions could make you take saves for basically no reason. I decided to work on a rewrite for the system to change this up a bit.

Ah. That's fair, though I'm in the opposite camp; I don't think that the unwritten rule about single-word class name is worth paying attention to, and don't think "savant" would convey what the class is any better than the current title does (at the very least, that as a one-word title would do nothing to imply they're a mage).

Different strokes, I guess.
>>
>>49211724
I understand your feels, anon.

More than one word and it sounds more elaborate and fancy, more suited for things like prestige classes, whereas a base class should be nice and snappy.

In my opinion at least.

The PC in question actually has a flaw/trait called Corruptible. I was thinking I'd just add another -2 to the baseline one for each manifestation level rather than NPCing him entirely. Just exploits a weakness that he'd chosen for himself along a theme that fits the character's concept.

Like, a while back I was pondering a sort of psychic class that rather than using spells or psionics or psychic spells or anything had a far more focused scope mostly focusing on the myriad uses of telekinetic power or more mental effects (Like mindcrushing or mental therapy). I was pondering them picking one 'track' and getting the other at half level or something

I was reading back issues of the Sonic comics, and Silver is shit at being psychic except for TK, whereas Gold is really good at mental stuff.

Gauntlets of the Skilled Maneuver, Thorny Ioun Stone, a Size increase, Anaconda's Coils, a Brawling Amulet of Mighty Fists with Permanent Greater Magic Fang +5, Brawling on your armor, and the relevant feats. If Kraken Style is passable, go for Grabbing Style, as that will let you grapple with one hand. Then grab a Katar or something stupid for x4 multiplier on the crit. I'll have all the tentacles in the next level or so. At the moment I've got two, plus Tear Flesh (which only matters when a target escapes my grapple but hey, free damage), Empowered Natural Weapons (so Deadly Fist abilities apply to the tentacles), and I was considering grabbing the Psychokinetic Armor bladeskill to get free armor enhancements (especially since Brawling is only +1 for armor).

The Anaconda's Coils is less helpful (aegis stat bonuses are enhancements already, and by the time I get it the bonuses to str/grapple will be higher than that belt's. I'm not sure if constrict is worth that much from that source).

Of note, my GM for this game did away with 'wondrous item slots' being location-specific, so now we're just limited to a number of effects equivalent to the number of slots there are (eleven, iirc).

I'll check out Kraken and Grabbing styles, the Katar is easy enough to grab. Thanks for the help!

>>49213685
>No form of attack can suppress the tarrasque's regeneration—it regenerates even if disintegrated or slain by a death effect. If the tarrasque fails a save against an effect that would kill it instantly, it rises from death 3 rounds later with 1 hit point if no further damage is inflicted upon its remains. It can be banished or otherwise transported as a means to save a region, but the method to truly kill it has yet to be discovered.

That is not what I said.

This is what I said. It regens 40hp/round, so if it takes 40 damage/round it would effectively have no regen, hence "negate".

Comprehensive reading is important. This would obviously not kill Tarry, but keeping it unconscious is the second-best option.

Updates to the playtest

>Shadow Sentinel now has optional shadow talents
>All replacements for social talents are now shadow tricks

The archetype's more modular now, so it combines with a lot of other things, instead just replacing

>Specialization

>Vengeance Strike

Personally, shadow alchemical scoundrel is looking pretty hype.

Also kind of thinking of changing the name of alchemical scoundrel and shadow sentinel, I'm up for suggestions.

You could also whip up a way to permanently turn the tarrasque into your plaything by sucking your DM's cock. If you have to go by the DM's whim then it's not really an option worth discussin'
>>
>>49213522
130 tons right? I did the math, I managed to get a high enough carrying capacity to drag it around without a problem.
>>
>>49213760
Fine.

Magic Jar the Tarrasque with a Wish spell, and then planar shift the gem to the negative energy plane.

When the spell ends, your soul goes back to your body, and the Tarrasque's soulless form will be a living vegetable for the remainder of eternity, since the gem would be outside the spell's range when the effect ended.

Magic Jar is not a mind-affecting effect, so the Tarrasque is not immune to it, and it's got a fuckin +12 Will save.
>>
>>49213636
Might want to ask your GM to allow you to custom the grapple enhancement and constrict might be nice for things immune to crits, since they won't fall to the Coup. That way, you can completely unload on them, grapple with a grab, constrict for more damage, then break the grapple on your turn, and repeat. It can be a decent little add-on.

Also, don't forget the +4 to grapple from having grab. All your tentacles actually give you +10 total to grapple.

4 tentacles only gives +8, unless there's a clause about multiple limbs somewhere I haven't seen.

I've been considering asking about some way to get constrict, but until we get a bit further in and find out whether or not he's being serious about tacking mythic on top of our tristalt I was thinking to hold off.

How many different ways can I apply a phat Charisma?
I've got armor (Mystery Cultist of Arshea), deflection (incorporeal through Ghost Syrup, snagging an Amulet of Grasping Souls for the sake of ease), carry weight (incorporeal), saving throws (paladin dip for Divine Grace), and to spells (Incanter). Is there anything else I even need to worry about, or is this already excessive?
Charisma is at a 33, will be 38 in two levels before any items

Oracle can grab you some nice things. Depending on what mystery cultist grants, a single level dip in Sphere Oracle (so you don't lose CL) with the Nature mystery for Nature's Whispers or w/e can sub in for your AC. It's explicitly not a Deflection bonus; it replaces your dex for AC/CMD with CHA, so it works with your ghost syrup idea.

Lore works too, iirc, and has some other good revelations to grab.

Noble Scion (War) gives CHA to Initiative.

>>49214144
Mystery Cultist drops one level of spellcasting overall, and grants (for the six levels I'd need) some neat stuff up to Cha as armor (specifically Arshea's second boon). I'm considering ignoring the PrC, as by the time I got to its 6th level I'd have only gained the second boon one level in advance (15th vs 16HD as per Celestial Obedience).

I like Nature's Whispers, though being incorporeal is gonna negate most combat maneuvers so the best part is charisma to AC for a third time (armor, dex replacement, deflection).

We're already playing, so I'd have to retrain my first level feat (which is totally acceptable tbqh).

>>49214190
Agent of the Grave would be reasonable, probably, though it conflicts a bit with the direction this character is going (it requires an Evil alignment. What was that 3pp feat that let you ignore one prereq? or was that /pfg/ just postulating?).

Alright, which one of you chucklers is in my myth-weavers game trying to play a god damned shota trap foxboy as a fucking aasimar rather than the Kitsune I redid for this purpose (minus the shota bit).

Chuckler wants to play a shota foxboy for what I can only presume is fetish reasons.

He wants to do this by playing an aasimar with fluffy tail.

But what I don't understand is if he wants to be a kitsune boytoy... why not be an actual kitsune?

Yeah, normally kitsune are fucking furfags, but I fixed that. No more furfaggotry, at will shapeshift to babby fox, hid kitsune features (ears, tail) at will, etc, etc, etc. So why not the actual fox person rather than a part angel?

Play a fetish character isn't the same as forcing that fetish on others. If someone likes kitsune traps that's fine to play one. It's when you're making the others uncomfortable that it isn't.

I've seen it exist, it's a fabled land where people know you're getting off to a certain aspect of the character, but that doesn't bother them because the character's got more to them than that and you're all good friends.

A good example is the woman that spends the entirety of the campaign pregnant, but there's a backstory reason for her to be adventuring while knocked up and the player's a cool person trying to put effort into making a dynamic character.
>>

>constant 30ft/60ft/90ft/ radius 2nd-step detect magic
>9th level constant 30ft radius detect spellcasters
>gun witch can use her round's nova ability use to fire as a full BAB class, free action to reload, no ammo dependencies, no misfire

>Just a slightly faster version of constantly concentrating on detect magic (since any caster can do that out of combat, when it matters, and always be on third round), since it's a cantrip. Eventually anyone sane will have arcane sight permanencied anyway
>Detect magic and arcane sight will tell you who's relevant anyway, this isn't a big deal
>"They can use guns without the issues of them" it's not even as good as the gunsmoke mystic.
>>
>>49215285
I'm not sure if the gunsmoke mystic should be a balance point here.

Though I agree that the Gun Witch's abilities aren't really overpowered. It's basically equivalent to getting an advanced firearm and using good ammo-tracking houserules.
>>
>>49215285
A bit of the concern does come from being able to just waste time making a shitton of different scrolls or potions and so on and so forth, but the main detractor (I'm discussing the class with some of my TT group) forgets that not all campaigns give players free time and/or time to travel and sell shit.

Any decent GM wouldn't let that shit fly to begin with.

>>49215285
>>49215351
I've avoided making my own commentary on Gun Witch with my group since it's the newest archetype, that and my group has a tendency to shit on anything and everything I show an interest in until I stand stubbornly behind it long enough for someone to actually read the shit and understand why it ain't bullshit.

Same person who had issues with getting my group to understand that Occult Adventures isn't OP and that they're either echoing the only person who had (terrible) experiences with 3.5 Psionics or just don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
>>
>>49215398
Isn't it basically just the same as a cleric for scrolls and options?
>>
>>49215421
Pretty-fuckin-much.

Kinda the problem I have with my group. They make what 'could' be problems out of things that are already a thing with other classes.

It's why we never touch- correction- we're never allowed to touch 3pp. Nobody's willing to read the shit to figure out whether or not it's 'balanced' (for what balance is worth) and even if they are (ie I read something myself and start talking about it) it's always approached with skepticism and always, without failure, all commentary on said content is made in an extremely dismissive tone.
>>
>>49210506

>>49215191
Hey, thanks for taking a look. I had been going to just leave it be for now, but your post made me go double-check the gun witch.

So, update.
>Gun Witches now have proficiency in guns

Regarding your points though...
>Spell prep
While this is very strong, I would definitely take into account what >>49215285 said. Their spell progression is /incredibly/ slow compared to full casters, so while there's added versatility, in the end it's generally going to be a lot lower (even if you can access day to day low-level silver bullets easily).

>Detect magic
I've actually been fiddling with that in chargen and discussions with my own group, and I've now made the choice to downgrade the always-up detect to 1st-round. Personally, I don't think the 2nd-round is an issue (Detect Magic is at-will, after all), but I /do/ think it'd be a bookkeeping nightmare to constantly track that. Now, concentrating on it will give you detection as if 3 rounds, but the passive is only a binary "is there magic around y/n"

>9th-level blindsense for spellcasters
This is very, very strong, and will be useful for finding hidden spellcasters and psionicists, but do note that it doesn't discriminate based on type. It will ping "someone who has picked up a cantrip in their lifetime" the same as "the BBEG in disguise," making it a decent detection tool but not something that will throw a wrench into everything

>Gun Witch
At the same time, the only native boost she gets to it is as part of that ability, and using it drastically cuts her ability to cast spells (since she used her nova spell already). Most of the gishy spellburst scholars will extensively use Quickened spells, but gun witches don't even get that. Personally, I'd say it's comparable to things like the Desperado Warlord. It is better than the Gunslinger, but that's honestly not a high bar. Ammunition costs are negligible past a certain point, and reloading tends to have a class feature (like this one) supporting it.

Inspiration's definitely neat, free applications of Inspiration to Knowledge, Linguistics, and Spellcraft's just gravy.

Studied combat does limit you to melee, especially if you want to use studied strike.

You are indeed wrong, friend. the investigator is the best skill monkey in the game. It simply lacks combat ability, but you can make up for that with proper use of extracts and the infusion discovery.
>>
>>49216116

I'd say it's the best skill monkey in the game, personally. Its combat performance isn't all that and a bag of chips, but it's still a pretty decent combatant, miles ahead of the rogue.

Particularly if the GM is not a faggot and doesn't make you pay a feat tax to use studied combat at range.
>>
>>49216116
Depends on what you want to do. As a combatant it's a bit behind many of the heavy focused damage classes classes, though if you go for mutagen you can catch up a little bit.

As a skill monkey it's amazing, and Inspiration lets it pull off a couple of neat tricks. Plus it has alchemy.

Overall, it's a fairly solid Tier 3 class with a lot of options available for solving problems, though again, don't expect to be a damage machine.

Empiricist Investigator is the god of skill checks. Inspiration is fucking amazing, but it might take a while for it to really ramp up. ANY Investigator needs to beg their GM to let them have a talent at 1st level so they can alleviate the Infusion Tax. You'd also better hope your GM is letting you use Deadly Agility, or else you're stuck with a STR build or eating fat feat taxes for a Dex build. If you have Dex-to-damage, and if you can get a setup, studied combat+mutagen can turn you into whirlwhind, but you're not going to be a combat monster like an alchemist or barbarian.

Combat Inspiration is amazing for saving throws, but kind of meh for actually adding to attack rolls, IMO.

So basically, for that scenario, he'd use his attack and let's say he hit with both, each attack dealing 1d6 damage. He gets a 6 and a 5, basically making 1 hp of damage to the zombie. And then he'd roll another 2d6 damage(1d6 for each weapon) while in this stance, and the DR would apply for that as well for every 1d6?
>>
>>49217610
No, each attack would do 2d6 damage. That poster was saying how the extra 1d6 on each attack counts as the type of damage the weapon deals. So if you hit with two attacks, and roll a 6 and a 5, then, say, a 2 and a 4, you deal 6 damage with the first, then 1 damage with the second, assuming your weapon doesn't bypass a zombie's DR.
