What country are you in? It's important.

step 1: While drunk, agree.
step 2: Approximately two weeks before LARP starts, panic.
step 3: ???
step 4: Profit?
I'm currently at step two, working my way into step three.

The USA, specifically California.

American larps tend to be a shitshow more often than not. Not trying to turn you off of the whole scene, just giving you some fair warning.

I've heard a lot of weird things about american LARPs. Serious, serious levels of DnD-simulation, characters having stats, etc. How much of this is true and what is exaggerated?

The larp that I went to, and plan to go back to once I get my jackboots and m40 uniform, had some stats, but they were combat related. Damage dealing/taking mostly.
Remember when you larp you are as autisc as when you role play on the table just if you play In open spaces some one may see you

how do stats in a larp work?
This is sort of what American LARPs are like, though experiences vary greatly.
It's also just a good story.

Sweden here, the only real stats I heard of is HP, which is very simplistic and only used in boffer-heavy larps. An example could work like this:
>Each hit location (arms, legs, head, torso) gets 1 HP + 1 HP per layer of armor
>When you get hit, that location takes one damage
>When a limb reach 0 HP, it's unusable
>When head or torso reaches 0 HP, you are dead/unconscious
So for an unarmored person, one hit always cripples or puts you down, armor lets you take one or two more.
