Patrician taste here anon, Bionicle were a big part of my childhood. I remember being completely shocked when I discovered how developed their lore really was. Also I think it would translate pretty well to tabletop, although it would probably be hard to find dedicated players.

Polynesian bio-mechanical robots have techno-magical adventures.

Actual spoiler
as the lore progresses everything gets less magical and more biological, as it turns out that their entire "universe" is on/in the corpse of their creator god, which is actually a giant robot

Robotic Tiki warriors on a tropical island. They have magic masks and elemental powers and battle an evil shadow god.
>>
>>49179401
Basically Lego Battle-bots, except they were partially organic. Had a decent story, and the free monthly Lego Magazine came with an issue of the comic series, so it was easy to keep up. A lot of focus was put on the Masks, which basically gave their wearers extra power, plus, their weapons were sick most of the time.

Well, there's several way of going about it:

Amnesiac biomechanical color-coded warriors with attitude defending a beautiful island and its likewise biomechanical color-coded people with magic masks and control over the elements, hoping to wake up their god who was cast into sleep by an evil shadow entity.

Afterwards they learn that nothing is what it seems, and that the village elders have been keeping their history a secret. There's no magic, they weren't supposed to be living on a tropical island, the bad guy isn't an all-powerful god, and there's a bajillion other islands and all sorts of other advanced species they had no idea about. Mystical fantasy vibe gets replaced with more generic soft sci-fi and action and the lore is expanded a hundredfold. The genre shift (which was sorta planned) and some hasty rewrites (which were not) lead to inconsistencies out the ass. Especially when they decided to keep the story going and bring in whole new planets and civilizations instead of ending it as it was probably intended.

As a bonus, the entire thing is an allegory for biology represented through the juxtaposition and symbiosis of technology and nature, but it got stretched out to the point where this symbolism became barely relevant.

Basically a grand concept and original universe with tons of story content slowly brought down by being a toy-line that has to cater to the shifting tastes of kids and being really sloppy with its tie-in media.

Then it got a dumbed-down reboot last year that tried to fix its mistakes but instead of doing that, it made new ones, and it apparently performed so bad that Lego had to end it a little over halfway through.

For a few years straight when Bionicle had just come out my grandparents would by the entire set of the main heroes of each of the different generations.
The first gen were obviously the best, but what I enjoyed most was mixing sets together and creating new characters.
Bionicles were great for my bro and I especially since they interested both my little brother's love of action/wrestling figures and my love of Lego blocks.
I wish we still had them all, but during one of the many California wildfires one of my step-dad's coworkers lost their home and their kids lost all their toys. Since my bro and I were then teenagers we gave them most of our old toys including all our Bionicles.
I'd love to be able to build shit like the pic I included but the price to make such a piece is quite expensive.

Imagine someone who can, at will, control gravity within his zone of awareness. Now make that person an incredibly intelligent and malicious leader of mechanical bugs each with an insane burrowing speed and destructive power, any of whom can possess someone separated from their Kanohi.
Oh, and he's also a mechanical bug that can spindash and is an expert fighter as well.
That's what you're up against.

Definitely Matoran adventures. Toa are nice, but it's a Dark Heresy-Deathwatch relationship. What system base are you recommending?
>>
>>49180812
I'd say that Toa are the main PC option, but we have Matoran as a viable option. So, are we going to use Cypher? Something else? Something we build from the ground up?
>>
>No one can decide how to run the system

This is easy anon

1) Savage Worlds. Homebrew the elemental powers but don't give players access to the book--if they play as Toa, the powers they unlock are random, representing them learning their abilities. The masks give access to a certain spell, without having to spend Power Points, as long as the mask is worn. Toa without their masks are automatically Shaken. Same goes for Matoran.

2) In order to play the game, players must build their own Toa from leftover Bionicle parts, using the biggest Lego collection the players can find on hand. I shit you not. How fun would this be? How amazingly fucking attached would you be to a character you LITERALLY built with your own two hands, designed a background and a name for, all while waving him around like a badass and playfully whacking the masks off other player's figures?

I tell you /tg/, it's like you don't know how to into Lego. The bricks and parts are the best element (pun intended) for holding player interest. You should exploit that.

Also,

>the entire adventure happens on a new island chain, which they must explore/learn about the inhabitants of
>spoiler, it's Mata Nui's knuckles/hand which is raised above the surface of the water

>>49184023
There's an official serial about him visiting alternate dimensions. Shattered Glass, I think? Civil War? I forget the name.

>>49184211
Toa seems too snowflakey. If we start with the buildingblocks of the universe and the average joe, I think we'll have a better experience. Numberwise, its best to start at the small things first, anyway. Don't want to have to be dealing with half an armor point.

It's like you want your players not to feel special. I get it would be fun to play Matoran on Mata Nui but come on, there's only so long you can do that without having to whip out Greg Farshtey's 1000 page timeline of Matoran history so as not to intersect with muh lore

Spinoff/OC robots a best
>>
>>49184327
I'm not saying I want to play as a canon character, I'm saying I don't want to mix and match my canon sets. I like keeping everything nice in its respective container. Anytime I mix and match it ends up getting lost.

also

>not mix and matching sets

I respect what you're trying to do but it defs goes against the creativity principles of LEGO. Having an entire universe of parts to build and saying "no, they can only look like THIS" is kinda futile. THen again, I had a little bro who would pull my Toa apart and graft other shit onto them, so I never got that chance.

Now anons, riddle me this, who would be the villain in your Bionicle tabletop RPG? Makuta got stomped by the Toa, Bohrok-Kal are too OP, and I dunno what the fuck is even going on with the Piraka.

I mean that they didn't really get used much at all. Tahu uses his shield mask a grand total of once or twice in the movie and Pohatu was really fast.

It just would've been neat seeing them leverage those abilities instead of firing a friendship beam and winning.

I'm not going to complain too much, it was just a kids movie, it was just something that bothered me a little when I first saw it.

On the flip side, watching Tahu lava surf was awesome.

See, I like d20s. They have just about the right amount of granularity. Even d100 systems usually use 5% increments, which works out the same as a d20 but more fiddly.

Eh, the Cypher System is pretty nice. I won't brag about it, but it at least avoids most of the issues with 3.5, and even a few in 5e. It's a generic system though, so getting it to do what you want takes some extra work.

The truly godlike beings that created Mata Nui and the Makuta, as well as the two world-bodies, had left all these things behind them as failed experiments and gone off to other worlds to try other things.

Not really. Fucker got buried under his own element like a total bitch even though he had:

The movie's not horrible but man did it screw up some aspects of the characters. Although I can look past the Toa not being able to switch masks. Maybe the creators thought kids would get confused if they saw the characters with each other's faces.

>>
>>49185719
>>49185944
Oh, OK.
Not really, there's nothing interesting about him.
"Krekka was living a simple, violent life as a guard on his home island, until he interfered with a representative of the Brotherhood of Makuta. He lost his job, along with one of his eyes, and was forced to flee his home. He eventually broke enough opponents in two to attract the attention of one of [the] Dark Hunters and was recruited to join the organization."

Nidhiki, on the other hand, has much more interesting lore. He was originally a toa of air, allied with that fire toa Lhikan (who went missing in the metru nui movie) and the water toa Tuyet. Tuyet tried to off Lhikan and Nidhiki to take over Metru Nui and create a toa-led empire with her as empress. In the main universe*, Lhikan and Nidhiki kick her shit in and save the day.
Shortly after, Nidhiki also gets ideas of betrayal into his head and tries to get chummy with the Dark Hunters. His betrayal is a failure, but he does eventually get a job with them. Unfortunately for him, this only happens after he has a chance encounter with Roodaka, who mutates him heavily.

*in one of the alternate universes that Takanuva goes too, he sees a world where Tuyet succeeded with help from Nidhiki, and it ends up being pretty grimdark and interesting.
>>
>>49185927
That's one of the books I haven't read. A large part of the overly messy and cluttered 2005 arc is still a semi-blank spot to me because I know the basics just not the details.

I ran a series of Bionicle Quest threads two years ago, and I've been considering rebooting them now that I have time.

A few questions:

Would you rather play a Matoran or Toa?

Favorite setting? answers other than Mata Nui are objectively wrong, but you will get points for Bota Magna robodinosaurs

Which element is your favorite? Which Kanohi is the most interesting to use?

/qst/ or /tg/?

canon bionicle needed more balanced gender ratios. which toa is best waifu?
>>

Water's good as a female as it is, Fire would also be good, as well as Air. You could argue that any of the other elements could be female though.

And honestly, no, I don't want waifus. A Toa girl can have a nice personality, but they're still essentially robots with little to no womanly curves. I hate it when games and stories try to force me to like female characters, and you could make an easy argument that gender doesn't even matter for bionicles.

I mean sure there is some actually kinda nice bionicle porn out there, but you can see just from the sheer lack of it how little there is to work with.

And even then ignoring the sexuals, romance was also never really a thing. No Matoran lovers, no marriages, no playful banter between two Toa turning into a relationship. It's just something not in the setting, and I'm actually a little glad of that.

just to say that the great being's choices of gender for elements were arbitrary anyway - to the point where they built prototypes that worked otherwise.

actual reason: my sister and I used to make houses out of system lego and shoeboxes and capes out of cloth for our bonkles and she wanted a female Ta-Matoran so we built one together, and I stopped caring about element/gender distinctions.

I'll never forget the part they added into the "Web of Shadows" book adaptation of the movie.

In the movie, when talking about becoming a Hordika, Nokama says that she's been feeling "Animalistic urges" recently. Understandable, since they became literal beastmen.

In the book, and not in the movie, Matau follows up.

"Hey, do any of those urges happen to involve me?"

>What was wrong with it?
The 2001 plot wasn't set in stone until years later, so understandably the writer (who was a hired outsider, not someone with deep knowledge about the lore) tried to fill in the spots with her own ideas. For instance MNOG was considered non-canon for a long time, so the first book completely ignored the Toa's fight with Makuta and anything relating to Takua. The Toa Kaita formation is also different compared to both MNOG and the canceled PC game and the Makoki stones never come up.

Furthermore, Greg later decided to go and de-canonize the way the Shadow Toa were defeated. In the book, the Toa destroy them through teamwork, but in Greg's more official version, they "accept that darkness is part of their being" and merge with their shadow counterparts.

There are also legit goofs in the book, like how some of the Toa are described having their Nuva weapons in a few scenes.

The rest of the early books were mostly true to the comics.
>>
>>49188794
The WOS book and movie are so different. I like the movie well enough, but the book adds so much more detail. Like how Vakama wasn't really evil, he just wanted to free the Matoran by himself and it wasn't until he touched Makuta's throne that his mind got completely corrupted. Whereas in the movie, all it takes for him to go over to the dark side is Roodaka commanding a bunch of Visorak to kill themselves (in the book they don't actually die).

Matau also brings up Lhikan when he tries to reach Vakama, which adds a lot more drama into the scene than simply reciting the three virtues like in the movie.

For the record, from what little I read from the The Legend Reborn book, that one's also a gigantic improvement over the film. Not that remarkable of a feat, I know.
>>
>>49188895
>With Toa after that, I can't remember a distinct personality.
Jaller's personality as a Toa was literally that he wanted to avoid being like Tahu and Vakama. Being less of a hothead and listening more to his teammates with whom he was friends. Though he didn't take too kindly to Matoro upstaging him when they went underwater.

Yeah, and the sad thing is the line got canned before we got to explore that planet.

We could have gotten biomech dinosaurs and a movie about them. Yeah, it would have been made by the same people as TLR, but who knows, maybe they would have gotten better at making movies by that point.

Technically stuff like the Rock Steeds can maybe be seen as dinosaurs, and there were the Bahrag in 2002 who were kinda dinosaurian. So at least we had them. But I wonder what they would have done for the scrapped 2011 line.

Something that's bothered me - if Metru Nui is below Mata Nui, is that in Mata Nui's head? How are you supposed to get there? Why is there earth and dirt below Mata Nui?
>>
>>49200541
What a coincidence, this i something I was thinking about a few minutes ago actually. Metru-Niu is supposed to be Mata Nui's brain, so it make sense to be under Mata Nui Island. But I also never really got how is it possible if you have all the dirt, rocks etc beneath it, not even talking about the mines.

>>
>>49196001

Considering the main topic of discussion has been dead or irrelevant for years now, I'm not surprised.

But BZP was going to shit long before that. Most of the administration, at least when I was there, was in their late teens and seemed to get a particular thrill out of being in control of a userbase primarily consisting of children/pre-teens and their parents.
>>
>>49200541
An what about Voya Nui? What is the cord that connects it to the bottom of the ocean(Mata Nui's body) in regard to Great Spirit's anatomy?

>>

Oh yeah, I remember that scene, rip in peace Mataro
>>
>>49200541
the Mata Nui island is an automatic camo system for the face of the Mata Nui robot, and the Bohrok were designed to clean it away. Metru Nui is in the head of the robot, like a brain; Voya Nui was on/in the robot's torso before the Cataclysm broke it off- it rocketed up to the surface and lava from the volcano there progressed downward and formed a chain.
>>
>>49203723
Voya Nui
>>
>>49202116
Voya Nui was originally a "plug" of sorts on the top of the Mata Nui robot's heart chamber (at elast according to some concept art). When he hit the planet, it broke off and tore its way out of his chest, and as it drifted to the south, that island formed around it.

But then part of the island broke off and landed on the Pit, and cooling magma formed a cord between the floating Voya Nui and its broken-off bit (Mahri Nui). This cord solidified and anchored Voya Nui in place (Mahri Nui's working name was even Ankor Nui at some point).

Doesn't make sense at all but it's an interesting concept that should have been thought through better.
>>

Thanks for both replaying and bumping the thread, I don't want it to die yet.

By the way does anyone knows a good place to buy Bionicles (in terms of price and availability) other than Ebay?
>>
>>49201368
I joined that site around 2005, and it still felt like a highly active community at that point. Sadly it was the first forum I had experience with, and all its autism, strict rules and the like tainted my perception when I registered to other places.

It had a rough time in past years, saw waves of drama, but by this point it's practically on life support, it's not even worth to harp on it.

>>49205471
Well, Bricklink would be the obvious answer in terms of availability, but people there know how much a set is worth and can demand good money for them, so it really depends on what you want to buy. Used sets that aren't so rare have affordable prices, rares ones, especially unused are pricey.

I had more luck with eBay back when I still tried to complete my collection. It often took years of patience, but I managed to snatch some older sets I always wanted for a decent price.
>>
>>49205595
Well, thanks a lot for telling me about Brickling, never heard of this side and it has some sets I've been missing in much lower prices than anywhere I've seen.

I remember there used to be a mod on BZP who would lose their shit without fail every time someone posted a build of a female character with a discernible bust, especially if they used those armor shoulderpads or Rahkshi heads.

This was in spite of the fact that Roodaka exists.

BZP used to flip out about such things even not too long ago.

But I remember reading that others were also outraged over Roodaka, which is why the designers stopped making "obviously" female sets later on.

The Metru were the best Toa bodies. Yeah, they were a little samey once you took away the weapons, but it helped to unify them as a group and the whole thing was far more solid and versatile than the older Toa.

Those two special edition Toa Hagah with the spinner shields were perfection. Iruini is one of my all-time favorite sets.

Dig a hole in front of him and watch the dumb fuck fall in. It worked for Onua.

>>49207347
Rhotuka are god tier as well. They're still the best projectiles.
>>
>>49207347
I never liked how the Metru body was built, the torso was too small and thin, the stomach-area in particular is an eyesore, the arms too far out to the side (at an odd angle at that) and articulation was limited due to the gimmick. Didn't like how the chest armor had more holes in it than the Great Beings' logic, either. No wonder the movie designs changed them so much.

The Hagah fixed some of those issues with their extra body armor, their longer arms and by halving the arm-spinning gimmick. They look great, I sorta wish they redid the same design without the action feature and fixed proportions.

They were torn up pretty bad, 'cuz you know, kids don't go easy on comics, but fuck, I'd almost say it was magical.
>>
>>49200541
Metru Nui is basically built on top of Mata Nui's brain. You have to travel through a tunnel system accessed from Mangaia to get from the island of Mata Nui to the dome it's located in. It's shown in the old MNOLG that if you dig down deep enough on Mata Nui you'll eventually hit an impenetrable layer of material that exhibits some organic qualities. That's his face.
>>
>>49207595

Iruini and Norik's Toa sets were originally supposed to be Nidhiki and Dume, which explains the similarities in masks. I think making them Toa forms of two of the Rahaga was a fairly last minute change.
>>
>>49208568
Not only that, but their torso armor is also the same and Iruini's spearhead looks like Nidhiki's pincer.

That's a lot of obvious similarities to simply throw out like that, but I guess the Rahaga were in bigger need of a backstory because they were the current sets in 2005.

I dunno, probably. I kind of laugh at the porn, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want a romantic subplot for once in my bionicles.

It's ironic, though - I get so tired of romance subplots in other media that feel like they're detracting from the story. But for some reason I wouldn't mind them in the one setting that I know of that doesn't include any room for them.

>>49207347
The big plus to the Metru were the fact they actually had limbs that could bend. Otherwise, my favorite would still have to be the Nuva.

The canisters made them so easy to pack away and store. Plus on a lot of them, you could use the lids to store or display stuff like the Masks.

My favorite ones were easily the Bohrok's. Peel the back off and use that clip on the inside to suspend them in a pod.

>>
>>49215218
I can see where you'd be coming from. But, I don't know, there's just the chance to really go into interesting territory. I guess it scratches the itch I felt playing MNOLG harder.
I actually like the Glatorian/Agori, if only because there are a lot of different avenues of thought you can take and there's a lot of canonical wiggle room .

For instance:
>It's canon that Glatorian and Agori have metallic bones
>Mining and metalworking industries collapse during the Core War when Iron Tribe all die off or go insane
>Fast-forward to Bara Magna, where everyone still is able to make metal weapons somehow
>There's also a group of bandits named the Bone Hunters
>Connect the dots
To this day I'm still unsure if Greg Farshtey knew where this was going when he came up with the metal bones thing, which was after the Bone Hunters were established in the comics.
That's another thing, the relative lack of interest in Spherus Magna/Glatorian/Agori stuff means there's less stupid shit to worry about (both from fans and 'official' sources)
>>
>>49215423
I think one reason why the Bara Magna (and more recently Okoto, and thinking back basically anything post-2005) stuff didn't grab me was the lack of atmosphere and exploration. I didn't get into Bionicle because of the plot or lore, but mostly because of the tone and setting.

Mata Nui struck me as a vivid, living setting with many mysteries to explore even when I had no access to stuff like the website, comics and MNOG. But the early promo images, videos and mini CDs not only told me enough about the place and the main characters to care about and want to see more of them, but they also gave me a sense of the place's atmosphere.

Even Metru Nui felt like a well thought out little world through those Toa Metru promos and the CD games, and it had its own mood. Whereas with for example Bara Magna, sure I also know the backstory details, the tribes, the characters, I got the guidebook packed with story and lore details. But it all felt like fluff to me due to the lack of genuine exploration and a sense of atmosphere. Conceptually interesting ideas and backstories just thrown out there, but I couldn't get invested in the setting enough to care. Same with stuff like Voya, Mahri or Karda Nui, and Okoto especially.

Granted, I was also a far less jaded kid in the line's early years, so it's no wonder I ate up Mata and Metru Nui more easily.

That's fair.
I myself didn't actually really get into it until 2004, but I've played all the older stuff. Which, granted, most likely isn't why I have the same opinion you do.

Don't get me wrong, I like the original settings much as anyone else, I guess I just feel like there's less to discover --especially now that their biggest secrets have been laid bare.

And to be really honest, I find the backstories of the Matoran Universe and Spherus Magna to have the most potential out of any time period. Of course, the MU has 100,000 years of backstory and Spherus/Bara Magna has even longer than that to wonder about.

Ran a bonkles game a few years ago, everyone was matoran during the matoran civil war. Everyone managed to pick matoran from the Le, Ko, and Po Metru alliance, though Ga Metru was still neutral.

>had them round up some keras to be trained for cavalry usage to get everyone used to the mechanics >party gets sent to destroy Onu matoran digging machines that were going to crash a knowledge tower with no survivors.
>eventually they found out about the super secret third group that was going to come in and fuck everyone up and fought a shadow matoran just in time for the brotherhood of makuta to arrive with rahkshi, visorak, and exo toa
>Makuta Teridax commands all the armies to throw down their weapons and surrender or he'll lock them in the archives with a bunch of escaped rahi like he did the generals from each metro
>ended on a sad note, one of the players betrayed the party to join the brotherhood and become a shadow matoran, and the battle hardened veteran who had served in the legions of the league of six kingdoms buried his weapons so they wouldn’t be melted down for a giant statue of Makuta gloating

Pic related, Ko matoran officer and a few infantry from the civil war.

Posting random shit I made for the game, despite not actually using bonkles as the minis because all of mine were a hundred miles away while I was in college.

Make a new thread with it as the OP image.
if you include all the links to systems/comics/matoran language, we'll have a real general.
>>
>>49217283
I like this first one - does a good job at humanizing them, but still keeping things heavily mechanical or armored.

>>49217300
This looks a bit too human to me.

>>49217393
This one goes back to being good.

Overall, your art is good, and the style is solid.
>>
When I get home, I'll try to throw together a /biog/ OP copypasta. We have enough links.
I can't see post count on mobile, how many people are here?

>>

Sweet, thanks. I'll be home in around 8 hours, and if no one has done it by then, I'll make a pasta with all our links.

May I suggest doing the general every weekend instead of when the old one expires, like with TES general? It works great there, and this way we won't run out of the topics to talk about so quickly.
>>
>>49217893
That sounds good, but once I get the pasta made, I'm going to make a thread immediately so you can all yell at me for missing links.
