Pathfinder General /pfg/

Friendly reminder to tell us what 3pp your game allows if you need character building help.

What is the best alchemist archetype and why is it Beastmorph so that you can be an uguu~ weeb kemonomimi and still be optimal?

Dwarf is one of the better ones, actually. your channeling takes a hit due to the charisma penalty, but the race has a lot of support (including the absolutely wonderful Steel Soul feat) and a +2con/+2 wis for stats.

another really good choice would be Tiefling, as devilspawn tieflings have the same stat loadout as dwarves and get access to the tiefling only Fiendish Vessel archetype. If you take Pact Servant, you can even be a Fiendish Vessel as a Lawful Neutral character.

I find them better, at least for dwarves. Remember Dwarves get a penalty to Charisma, which means your Channel is kind of going to suck anyway (you'll be getting 2 less uses per day than a race with a +2 Cha). So trading out Channel for Runes (which are based off of Int) is a good trade up, especially since investing in Int is inherently better than Charisma anyway.

I don't think you can stack forgemaster and evangelist, nor can you take two variants of the same class at the same time.
Torag (THE LAW) looks like the main choice in base golarion, but you can always go "MAGIC ROONS LADDIE" and just not pick one. Make sure to throw the DM some bones for where you were trained and the organisation that trained you if you if you do so.

Hey, few changes in the playtest to the Mercurial Duelist:

>Anima Blade now gives scaling damage
>Finesse Blade/Spiritual Duelist are no longer talents, you choose one at 3rd level
>Ancestral weapon replaces the 1st level social talent

Overall, I think it makes the class less talent starved early, even if you have to wait until 3rd level to either get dex to damage (like a dirty unchained rogue).

So how the heck does does the MD consider the prices of enhancement bonuses he pays for on his Anima Blade? Does the innate bonus get added on at the end, and he starts adding as though it had nothing?
>>
>>49171127
That was something I considered, but when I ran the numbers with the sample character I made (highest original damage was 1d8/2d4 for a 1 hander), and it felt fair to let them go up higher. I almost want to make anima blade a base part of the class, but I think I'll avoid that for now.

>>
>>49171207
I should have clarified that it doesn't gain the enhancement bonus, although I think I'm going to bring back the treasure sacrifice mechanic, since I really liked that.
>>
>>49171316
Well, if the Anima Anima blade talent doesn't get the ability to add onto the blade's innate enhancement bonus, then you should probably let it get a "totally not arcane pool"-pool. Preferably with this on it: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-weapons/magic-weapon-special-abilities/impact
>>
>>49171194
you'll need improved grapple, maybe greater improved, cant remember.

But that should be feasible.

>>
>>49174057

Not everyone can fight effectively without a weapon, anon. Improved Unarmed reflects the training and dedication into learning how to do this, and that's why it's a feat.

That is what a feat represents, dedication and training into a specific aspect of something, this is why Fighters get a lot of feats and Combat has so many feats associated with it. You think the average person can lay on the ground and fire a gun effectively? You think the average person can swing a sword really hard? You think the average person can unsheathe their sword in less than two seconds? Give me a fucking break. Feats are important for showing your specialization into a specific field, from the peerless two-handed warrior to the precision archer.

Wonder why you don't need feats to use somatic components quickly then, or a feat to be good at tongue twisters so you can use verbals. You think the average person can trace a dozen fucking shapes or symbols in three seconds with their pinky? You think the average person can stare at their wand really hard? You think the average person can stand on one foot and invoke the wrath of khan effectively? Give me a fucking break. Feats are important for showing your specialization into a specific field, from the peerless color spray to the precision raycaster.

Lots of chances for both and you get a whole stable of pretty great NPCs to take advantage of. Korvosa works best if the players genuinely like the place and the people there.

The fights are interesting and there are several encounters that are non-traditional fights that break up the norm. (Rooftop chase with Trinia, Pig Ball, Shoanti tests)

The Skarwall Legacy is very combat focussed, but you have the Kuthites along for the ride who are kind of fun if you get to know them. The final adventure is very bare bones and needs some interaction to flesh it out and some encounters changed to make more sense. It drops a couple of one-off fights that have nothing to do with the rest of the game, so it's better to use some recurring villains or throw-backs to earlier encounters.

A large part of the extended leave of absence is because of the amount of time and energy used up working with DSP instead of just writing if I feel like it, and the significant distraction its internal chats pose.

I don't really have a funny reaction for this. Life's sucked lately. Have some sheep and a dragon.

>Catastrophic Spell (Metamagic)
>Your spells are measured not in foes slain, but wars won.
>Prerequisites: Empower Spell, Widen Spell.
>Benefit: This metamagic feat can only be applied to a spell that affects an area. Your spell becomes a spread that affects everything except you within long range (400 feet + 40 feet per caster level) of its origin point. If you apply the Widen Spell feat to the spell as well, its area increases to affect everything within twice that range (as normal for Widen Spell). A catastrophic spell uses up a spell slot six levels higher than the spell’s actual level.

Jesus christ Forrest.

I never knew I needed this. It's so impractical, yet amazing.
>>
>>49176468
>It's so impractical

Really? Because it seems like an effective way to wipe out Orc tribes or enemy cities.
>>
>>49176508
Yeah but it's a +6 metamagic, meaning you can't nuke with it until way late. This is the sort of thing blasters should get though. Narrative power like scrying, teleport, or calling, and just fucking incredible.

artifact then

>>
>>49176559
The prices don't go up to +6; the highest is quicken at +4. There's no actual pattern for the prices.

Lesser
>+1, 3,000 gp
>+2, 9,000 gp
>+3, 14,000 gp
>+4, 35,000 gp

Normal
>+1, 11,000
>+2, 32,500
>+3, 54,000
>+4, 75,500

Greater
>+1, 24,500
>+2, 73,000
>+3, 121,500
>+4, 170,000

It'd probably be expensive.

I'll write up some metamagic rods for the new feats in the next update.
>>
>>49176541
+4 only if you took 2 traits: Metamagic Master and Magical Lineage

+3 if you took that feat (I can't remember)

So yeah, its a bit more attainable now.

Why don't you just, like, turn it into some sort of out-of-combat ritual? Something that can wipe out so many people should be a spell that takes hours to cast and require some sort of funky focusing gear.
>>
>>49176670
How about we make it a ninth level spell. That's too easy, though. I suggest we make it require a material component of an artifact. Let's just increase the radius as well, since the required casting components also went up. So we'll make it 1 mile radius/cl. For let's say... 10d6 damage of the element of your choice.
>>
>>49176601
>>49176659
Well we can at least reasonably assume the price for a Catastrophic Metamagic gem would be 12,000.
>>
>>49176661
Don't forget to get Metamagic Focus and Greater Spell Focus & School Specialization (evocation)

There you go - your pitiful 1st, 2nd level spell is now ridiculously more powerful than your 5th level spell.

Actually, shouldn't most parries, etc basically transform the attack into at least a sunder attempt? I mean, I'm all for blocking shit with my battleaxe, and my battleaxe is PRETTY FUCKING TOUGH, but even I have to wonder about how a 300+ damage crit just pings right off an item that would have cracked at 90 and been vaporized outright by 200.

I've been there, man. My group TPK'd almost immediately arriving in Old Korvosa. They visited the BBEG for the adventure, figured out his secret almost immediately, and the Oracle put a curse down on him so he couldn't flee while they fought. The Inquisitor drops to a crit scorching ray almost immediately, and the oracle's rod of wonder accidentally fireballed the wizard and the paladin. The fighter and the oracle managed to bring the guy down, but they were in the middle of his house, surrounded by minions, and out of health/healing.

>>
>>49177722
It isn't? Why's that exactly? Aren't archetypes compatible with other Unchained classes?
>>
>>49177847
Okay then. So the Unchained Barbarian's flat damage boost and temp hp gets swapped out for Savage Tech's Dex and Con boost.

Why are you playing an Unchained Barb again?
>>
>>49177949
Well whatever it gets is irrelevant.

It changes what you get from Rage. So you'd get that instead of the unchained rage effect.

There's nothing stating any special rules about what happens if an unchained barbarian takes an archetype that changes how its rage works, so they just get what the archetype says they get.
>>
>>49177874
Is the boost all that changes? What about the tweaks to rage powers and stances? Or is the boost the only reason you'd go Unchained? Also, Savage Techs get STR/DEX on rage, not DEX/CON.

Yeah, misread. Thought you were saying Unchained's rage replaced the archetype. Soon as I realized the mistake I deleted the post.

Yay, my half-joking question about Catastrophic metamagic rods actually produced results- and a neato artifact.

But I think there's an error in the text somewhere. The statblock for the artifact stats it is neutral evil, but when the text describes that the item doesn't care about its wielder's alignment it says that it doesn't bestow negative levels even to non-lawful wielders. So is it lawful neutral, or neutral evil, or lawful evil?

Today I was the Edgemaster, PFG.

Today I used my Ravenlord Harbinger to *TELEPORTS BEHIND YOU* and *UNSHEATHES KATANA* against a horde of Devils while surfing on the back of his Shadowy Crow.

Today I leaped off my Dark Messenger at a Barghest, only to leave an afterimage as I *TELEPORTS BEHIND YOU* *STABS YOU IN THE HEART* an Erinyes I had wounded earlier, telling her to "Crawl back to whichever foul pit that spawned you, wretched harlot!"

Today I asked the Spellcaster final boss: "DID I SAY YOU COULD USE YOUR MAGIC, DEVIL CUR?" while marking him with a Witchfinder's Brand, forcing him to waste his spellslots four times this evening.

Today, when he cast Mirror Image on himself, rendering him nearly untouchable to his allies, I informed him: "Enough of your cheap tricks, sorcerer! The Dragon Knows the truth from your falsehoods" whilst closing my eyes and entering The Dragon Knows.

Today, I got the party rogue killed by buffing his damage too high with Aura of Shared Misery, pissing off the Spellcaster final boss, who disintegrated him.

Today was a good day. I had no idea being this edgy could be this fun.

That's awful, and you should feel really, really bad.

But it's great that you're having fun.

Those are almost as mad as I am reading about them. How did they manage to beat anything?

Well, I had to differentiate him from my usual Neutral Good characters (who tend to be self-sacrificing and merciful), seeing as he's Neutral Evil. Doing my best Caim impression - with just a pinch of Sasuke Uchiha thrown in for spice - all session long was my only recourse, really.

Platforming on the Burd was some of the most fun I've ever had, if only because Mirror of the Moon is freaking awesome (and confused the shit out of the Erinyes), and because I managed to line things up so the bird could always take me back into the smoke of the burning city after I attacked, making it hard to target me.

Also, apparently I kept making the Sorcerer waste his Aqueous Orb spells with Witchfinder's Brand (the BEST goddamn boost, holy shit. Stupid good at shutting down casters). Which he really wanted to use to knock me off of Burd.

My character name was Fujitsu Nagato, and his Dark Messenger was named Karasu. I am not apologize for going full Weeb, because it is hilarious.

Yes, well, we all use Roll Advantage, and that token there is of a higher resolution than many of the maps we use on Roll20.

2hu pretty much was the one who inspired me to make my own tokens pretty.
There were a couple botched attempts which look meh on the way, though, such as pic related.

yeah

im too bad and unskilled at the game to have thought of a build or anything but ive been pumping skills that allow me to sneak and navigate terrain better to shank people

i've been using this cruel dagger i got like the 2nd or 3rd session and i've gone far thanks to it
>>
>>49181352
Looks like you have most of your out of combat job handled, so you should start working on your ability in a fight. The rogue talent that adds bleed daage to your sneak attacks can be worth it in the right circumstances, though you may prefer to go for two-weapon fighting instead so you can churn out burst damage.

Also
>Ranks in Swim
Good on you, man. I always put at least one rank in that to avoid getting punked by water levels. It's useless most of the time, but when you need that skill, you need it now.

Well /pfg/, my mythic players have once again pushed the envelope of the possible.

Two level 7 mythic 1 characters nearly lost a fight to a pair of shadows.

I have no words.
>>
>>49181414
Dude, shadows are bullshit. Incorporeal in general is bullshit.
>>
>>49181414
Shadows are serious business, man.

Were the PCs strength or dex based?
>>
>>49181447
They had plenty of tools at their disposal, including at least four bottles of holy water and magical weapons.

>>49181460
The rogue was dex-based, the bard was str-based. Even so, they had access to mage armor and shield, and didn't use shield until four or five rounds in, and never used mage armor.

I didn't even mention the best part: the rogue insisted on using a masterwork kukri /after/ rolling a high enough knowledge religion check to know just about everything about shadows.

No accounting for bad choices, I suppose.
The rogue died from the bad touch
>>
>>49181498
Literally why.
Did he claim you didn't tell him '/that won't work/' clear enough, or did he have some other reason?
>>
>>49181447
>>49181460
I forgot to mention: they rolled 27d6 for stats and each had four 18s, with nothing below 14
>>
>>49181498
>>49181510
In that case, yeah, your players are dumbasses. Mythic doesn't mean unbeatable, just really hard to beat.
>>
>>49181509
The players are... a little slow. One's more used to Scion, Deadlands and Savage Worlds, but I've been playing PF with him for over a year now. The other is relatively new to d20 in general.

This is the same group that nearly died to two grizzlies at lvl6/mt1. It's mostly just poor decision-making mid-combat that gets them.

You should probably convert the Dragonfire Adept from 3.5 if you want that; it's literally its main thing.

Other than that, a sorcerer with the Elemental (Fire) with you fluffing his somatic components as breathing the fire rolls well. If you want to really cheese it, grab crossblooded to be Draconic (fire) as well.

either way, if you have access to third party, spend a trait to get an elemental Flux maneuver so you qualify for Elemental Focus (Fire) so you can ignore resistance and, eventually immunity.

Question:

Class A has SKILL as class skill
Class B doesn't have SKILL as class skill
Your char is A/B but for whatever reason you never put a rank on SKILL while you were A. If you put a rank on SKILL while you're B you get the +3?
>>
>>49179885
Is weird that I don't find this that edgy.
>>
>>49182130

>>
>>49182130
Yes.
Funny story, 2 of my GMs tried to bullshit me into believing you didn't get it back in the day.
>>
>>49182015
Wow, this is perfect. Doesn't need a lot of conversion, either. Maybe give it 3/4ths BAB like all d8 HDs have in Pathfinder.

I feel like the Kineticist was trying to emulate this class, somehow.
>>
What's a relatively unintrustive +1 template. Something that won't drastically change my character (turning him into a half dragon, ogre, fiend etc.).

Probably won't be able to take advanced.
>>
>>49182323
Close! Kineticist was trying to emulate the 3.5 Warlock, which is what the Dragonfire Adept was based on.
>>
>>49182339
Oh.

Right.

I forgot that was a thing. Man, how did Paizo manage to fuck up Warlock?
>>
>>49182369
Warlock really wasn't that great to start with.
