i noticed that my xenagos deck was having trouble hard casting creatures, so i put in stuff like garruk, caller of beasts and elvish piper. but then i noticed that as soon as i play those cards, everyone on the board instantly shoots all their spot removal at my shit and then they'll be gone by the time my next turn begins

should i keep them in as removal-bait? or ditch them? i really don't want to cut them out since i did pay like 10 bucks for them.

I have a Mayael deck, and after 2-3 multiplayer games I noticed Mayael drew a LOT of hate on the table turns 4-5 if I couldn't ramp fast enough to tap her by then.

So I added more ramp, as the deck is the same as yours, nothing but fatties over 6-7 CMC and manadorks.

Add in shit like sylvan scrying, nissa's pilgramage, explosive vegetation, etc. All the green mana ramp you can. Burnished Hart goes a long way as well, a good early blocker and ramp as well.

i don't really like the idea of running asceticism because it's an enchantment and i can't tutor for it. i'll be running archetype of endurance instead, which comes with a body, protects itself with hexproof and is tutorable.

one thing i do want to add at some point is more creature tutors (only 4 proper tutors at the moment, a few more pseudo-tutors), but i'm kinda strapped for cash right now so that'll have to wait.

those other things would probably be good too but i don't really feel like i need beaters. i have to struggle for control every time i get a good start so i really need almost all of my creatures for utility reasons. tutoring for creatures is what generally keeps me in the game. bane or progress deals with enchantment/artifact spam, balefire dragon kills token spam, duplicant kills fatties, godo deals with health issues, malignus combos with various things and 1-shots players with no blockers, etc.

even seemingly janky shit like living inferno is extremely clutch in xenagos. you can clear a board full of annoying utility creatures with it, and after you use it once you also have a 16/13 beater and recurrable pseudo-wipe. i'm guessing there would be a better creature to serve its role but i still like it a lot

The thing is, I WANT to win with combat damage. Imy trying to make a different version of Feldon that doesn't rely on the ETB effects to win.

The idea is to play things like Ball Lightning, smash face for double damage, then mill self with Altar and make more fodder with damage. I want all double damage outlets I can get.

No judge thread up and this is relevant to my EDH deck:

Situation:
I have Tree of Perdition and Ayli on the field.
I tap the tree to swap life totals with someone (say they start with 40 and the tree has 13).
My opponent casts murder on the tree in response to the life swap trigger.
I then sacrifice the tree to Ayli in response to the murder.

Alternatively, what happens if they cast murder then I tap the tree then sac it?

What happens?
How much life do I gain? 13 or 40?

In the first scenario, you would gain 13. The swap trigger is still on the stack, therefore your last sac effect would take place before the trees. In the second one you would gain 40 because you're doing it in response to their spell.

then you need to go bigger than ball lightning. remember that you're playing mono-red. everyone on the board will ramp faster than you, play beaters that are bigger and will generally blow your shit to oblivion. you need to be more audacious. ball lightning just doesn't cut it in that scenario

sheldon is kinda wonky for combat damage, so this deck will probably be wonky no matter what

if you insist on combat damage then you need to make some optimizations. first of all, i wouldn't try to hardcast any of your beaters. just loot them into your GY and get them out with sheldon. even though you don't want to abuse ETBs because you want to do combat damage, you can still abuse them while you beat faces. why bother getting a damage doubler and hardcasting a ball lightning and dealing 12 damage, when you can just play an artisan of kozilek from your grave and swing for 10 immediately for cheaper, AND bring another fatty to the battlefield?

i think your sheldon targets should start at 7+ CMC. beaters below 6 CMC don't hurt at all in EDH, and health is typically the resource people already have too much of in EDH. heres some random hastily researched ideas for sheldon targets:

>artisan of kozilek
>breaker of armies
>pathrazer of ulamog
>rapacious one
>scourge of the throne (additional combat phases are good for you)
>godo (same, but this guy can also tutor equipment for you)
>ignition team (really goofy but maybe you like that)

some words on consistency:

you don't have enough of the cards you need. you need to be able to rely on drawing certain stuff every game since you're playing a color with 1 tutor. so you need 8-12 of every card type. put in 8-12 looter effects, 8-12 sheldon targets, 8-12 spot removal, etc. make sure you have everything you need within turn 5.

i'm not an amazing player and you should take my advice with a grain of salt, but these were the lessons i learnt when building past decks

also if you plan on doing a lot of saccing, then you could run a subtheme of threaten effect + sac with all the threaten ETB creatures (molten primordial for sure). also you should probably have a skullclamp

Rakdos, Lord of Riots for least worst RB commander. You still have Kaervek, Olivia, Grenzo and a couple others that aren't that bad and are quite playable.

The main issue with RB is no enchantment removal when things like Rhystic Study and other enchantments are staples.

RW is worse due to next to no card draw, even worse commanders, and minimal ramp. At least black can draw out the ass and has some beefy demons and stuff.
RW has Iroas and...?

Boros and Rakdos are my two favourite colour pairings.

Now, what about Etched Oracle/Monstrosity? The Oracle I found a bit underwhelming but the Monstrosity I've played a few times and was impressed by. One time I had a mana doubler out and tapped 5 lands to Bring it to Light and then remove the counters for 3 cards. Felt pretty good.

Sunburst in general isn't that great in EDH, mainly because most of the cards with it aren't super great. I'm not an expert in artifact shenanigans, so I might be wrong with this, but that's the impression I get.

I like him a lot, he's much less vulnerable to gy hate than some other great and viable commanders like mimeoplasm or meren, so I wouldn't worry about it

Umezawa is just a good value guy, make a control deck and flashback kill spells all day until you have your big mana pieces and then you can win with literally anything you want (that is black or colorless)

Not even sure hatred is ideal with him but hatred is a good card, I just think of it as a card for an evasive creatures deck not an instant based control deck

Interesting claim. I only played it once or twice before dropping it, but I might give it another go. The big issue for me is that 1 mana to use its activated ability; I have to leave up 1 mana at all times while it's alive or risk it dying, and if it dies the turn it comes out it's 5 mana for 3 cards which is good but not great.

I play Karona spellslinger, with lots of wrath effects. It's mostly creatureless so that I don't wipe my own field, but I do include a few: Aetherling, Ixidron, Etched Monstrosity, and maybe 1 or 2 more. Long story short, I like to keep the battlefield empty so that Karona can come down swinging and kill people in 1 or 2 hits. She's powerful, but doesn't have many evasion options.

I want to add a few more creatures because I don't have many good options for killing planeswalkers.

I don't get why people go the defender route with Doran. I love mine, but there is very little defender outside of Sylvan Caryatid. His strength is in the value he creates as +toughness and high toughness cards are cheaper. Whats a good commander for someone getting back into MtG?

When he stopped playing it, it was around 5-6th edition probably.
He played games trying to draw Fireball and Keldon Warlord, playing stuff like Leviathan and Shyft, Shivan Dragon, Juggernaut.

Would Animar be a good commander for coming back to MtG in RUG colors? Seems like a simple commander with a simple deck build.

RUG has some of the more complicated commanders, and the game has changed immensely since 5th-6th Edition. Plus EDH has some of the weirder interactions I've seen in Magic

Except Derevi, who has that fucking second ability. Honestly. Derevi would be a very competitive but reasonable commander with just the tap/untap ability. But the second ability that ignores the commander tax is the problem. You can remove it, but it just keeps coming back for 4.

With the M13 commanders, I think it was neat that they had thought about ways to make the command zone more of an active element, they just did it horribly wrong with Derevi and Oloro.
