We've always been classic neck-entry types because 'muh easy kill' and it's just right there. But we've been watching some Animal Planet recently with the tv we scrapped together out of 2 skulls, a girl's spine, and a stolen tv and we see OG Hyenas going straight for the asshole whenever they're eating prey.

Is this right? We've all agreed it's brutal as all fuck and undoubtedly a convenient soft point of entry but some of us, as nasty as we are, hold a few reservations about going ass-to-mouth. Can you shed some light on this particular can of guts we've opened?

My Gnolls have a culture inspired by the recent Mad Max movie and game, as the setting I'm using is rife with magic-fuelled vehicles and primitive guns. Mostly they're plains raiders, ripping around the area on 15 foot long combat motorbikes that they fuel by stuffing fresh corpses into the engine. The smell of burning meat can sometimes give them away before anything else, depending on the winds.

Depends on what's been scavenged and on the apocalypse that happened. Assuming whatever local warlord hasn't dug up sarin or the like, improvised or improperly used stuff would still help.

I always liked reviving Gorellik as a diety, just to give certain gnoll tribes stronger reasons to fight against each other, and PCs a decent reason to work with a tribe of one against the other, or just manipulate them.

So, one of my games I played a Gnoll Paladin. He was abducted by Faeries at birth, and raised to be a Green Knight. For simplicities sake, I named him Obyron.

Holy.

Shit.

The Fighter and Cleric hated him, because he was a Gnoll (despite his proper grammar and not eating everything he killed) but the Sorc fuckin' loved him. Let's call them Greta, Lellyn, and Johan, respectively.

We get tasked with killing a Dragon that's going hog's-ass in a small village, and just to get there we ran across three Wyrmlings (More were in the village). Greta doesn't check for ambushes, and charges in. I, looking out for Lellyn and Johan, tell them to stay close to me, and ask Lellyn to stay behind Johan.

Greta gets jumped, and Lellyn immediately runs up to bless, heal, and beat dragonlings, in that priority order. Johan just kind of shrugs and motions for me to get to it, so we chase in after then.

We get to the Dragon, and the Cleric has spent most of her spells, the Fighter used their action surge, and I'm the only one who saved up for the ACTUAL dragon, aside from Johan. Johan looks at me, and gives me a thumbs up- Our signal to pull out all the stops. One Enlarge later, I fly into a Fae-inspired Gnollish Frenzy and drop max-strength smites all up and down that Dragon. We're finally at the end, and I actually got the chance to last the final hit. So, Johan's burned his spells blasting away, and I'm in its face. It goes to use fire breath, and thinking with his base instinct, Obyron leaps sword-first into the mouth, and starts stabbing, clawing, and biting wildly. The Dragon's confused, then in pain, then gushing blood from it's mouth.

By the time Obyron had eaten his way out of its neck, Greta and Lellyn decided I was actually evil and went to attack, before Johan politely stated that, according to my creed, and the decree of Obad-Hai, my goal was to purify evil and live as a predator, of which I had just accomplished BOTH, in glorious tandem.

It's not supposed to be 100% effective. It's supposed to be effective enough that you don't have to shoot your dog when its on the ground crying in terror and agony as it's eyes, mouth, and lungs are dissolved by the hydrochloric acid that's forming as the chlorine gas all around you dissolves into anything wet.

Huh. Gnolls in fantasy equivalent WW1. At first its a blast. Plenty of corpses to eat, trench raids are fun as hell. Then it just starts getting weird and upsetting, particularly for a predator born and bred for fast moving kill on the run pack combat.

Now WW2 tanks on the other hand. Gnoll tankers would be scary good.

I see Kobolds (though this may piss people off) as more like the Americans. There's so many of the bastards, and they're so productive when they have the kind of collective bout of insanity to that makes them actually put their minds to something, that you wind up just buried under an endless rain of shells, bombs, and bullets because, fuck it, we have infinity ships, tanks, and planes, and not-infinity soldiers, it makes more sense to burn the gear than the men.

There's plenty of dumb and angry ones perfectly willing to die for any insult towards their living gods, and plenty of smart ones ready to take a step back when volunteers are asked for.

Also, if they're not in a shitty position of having to improvise, I can't adapt the whole "Everything is bomb. Car is bomb. Tree is bomb. Corpse is bomb. Weapon is bomb. Even bomb is bomb." to them.

I can definitely see the gnolls being scary coordinated fuckers, but also a sense of wicked humor in there.

It's not a big deal. Most people probably don't know the first thing about hyenas, or would get confused on the fact that they're in more ways similar to cats than dogs. If people want to focus more on different animals - jackals, coyotes, that sort of thing - all the more power to them. A native american-themed gnoll works better if it's a coyote anyway.

For take fortress find ork tribe near dorffs Ork hate dorff, dorff hate ork. Whip up WAAAAG! Or wait for dem to WAAAAG! Join in, hang back, let orks do dieing, get in, loot everything, grab fat dorff for slave or food (also cary more loot), bounce before ork finish battle and start lootin.

Just remember burn hair off of dorff before eat, donk Still have beard stuck in teeth.

While I'm not a... Cruel Gnoll, as Donk is, I've had some encounters with the less civilized folk, which I am pretty sure Donk can agree with me on. Gotta say, I enjoy hunting down and putting down Orcs.

Good things:
-Orcs are powerful, but they're far less crafty. Any Gnoll can outspeed and outwit an Orc.
-Lots of meat, by Obad-Hai, you can eat for days on a single Orc. Not much fat though, they're not as flavorful as others.
-They like to think they're stronger than Gnolls, which means they get really scared when you meet them blow for blow. That makes some fights easy.
-No patience. They'll fall for traps easier than Humans or Kobolds.
-Lots of good Elf and Dwarf pillage. You can find items of good quality between the crappy Orc-shod garbage.
-Can actually make coin if you talk to a Dwarf or Human first, as they'll pay you if they don't know you were planning on attacking them anyways

Bad things:
-Their chiefs are actually stronger than they look
-They usually either have Goblins, Wargs, or Ogres nearby.
-They don't surrender, they'll die before capture most of the time, make sure to remember that bit Donk. You kill them all, or that Orc Warband will hunt you down for vengance.
-Old Orcs aren't weaker than young ones.
-Black Orcs can and will tear Gnolls, Humans, and anything really, in half with their bare hands.
-Gruumsh really hates it when his sacred sites get purified, Yeenogu or Obad-Hai might like it but you'll have consiquences.

Not Donk, but not all Gnolls are like Donk. Some of us actually get along alright with others.

An idea I had for a gnoll fighter was a gnoll that had been exiled from his tribe and ended up working with a half-orc mercenary band. This gave him a rough veneer of civilization, especially after he took up their storm god instead of Yeeonghu. Then he'd strike off on his own and hopefully join a party.

The ones I play in have gnolls literally be demon, slaughter pups. So the only way you are going to keep one around is through some magic way to make it stop being a demon, slaughter pup. Otherwise it's going to seek out fellow demon, slaughter pups or give the party a dose of demon, slaughter pup while they sleep.

I don't personally enjoy the demon background that much, but if I were to do it, I'd make gnolls hyenas that had been snatched from the mundane world and turned into murder machines by demons. Still mortal, but originally meant only to fight their battles against rival demons, and their myths' first gods would actually have been the first demons to lead them into battle. The only reason they exist in the world at all is because some were taken on an invasion into the real world and got left behind and were stuck fending for themselves, warlike and savage because that was how things had worked as footsoldiers for the demons.

Donk, I have a question.

I was raised by a family of gnome wizards, and I've never been quite at ease indulging in my more gnollish impulses. I can cast some magic and handle a blade, but I've never found any real use for it. I'm thinking about either trying to join a gnoll clan or trying to sign up as an adventurer. Which one should I choose?

Also, I have trouble with fleas and lice. What's your solution for dealing with them?

Well I prefer gnolls as barely-sentient murder monsters. Like, the closest you get to training one to be civil is to put it in a cage and let it out when you want it to fight but this causes practical problems.

I also feel that since half-orcs have become so ubiquitous and orcs have been pretty roundedly been granted sentience, empathy, and other such things that their usefulness as an evil race has been extremely diminished. So I like the idea of gnolls being the "no they are evil, horrible creatures" race to fill the void orcs once occupied.

I get what you're going for. I just like the idea that the orcs are an evil race created to conquer the material world - they breed with most other races, they can build fortresses and hold conquered territory, and organize in armies with good weapons and armor - where the gnolls are more like a race solely meant for fighting in a non-material world that ended up getting dropped on the world and still managed to carve out a rough niche for themselves. They can only organize in loose tribes or warbands (you don't need organization when you're just cannonfodder for fighting demons), they don't breed with other races (why bother if they were only meant to fight on demon planes?), and they can't really create for themselves beyond stone age tech and have to scavenge for anything else (they were equipped by their demon overseers and didn't need to make for themselves), but they've still survived and even thrived.

Still, you could tweak my idea bit if you really wanted, and it'd work well with yours. Just take out anything about them actually forming a loose civilization, and just keep them as fuzzy bombs of evil demon-ness.

I really like your concept but I don't like it enough to actually use it.

I really prefer start differences with my races so that way they can naturally come up through play and I don't really see enough of a difference between "these guys conquer the real world, and these others conquer the demon world" Like if that was the lore then I would just ball them together under demons. I much rather prefer extreme and immediate differences in their behavior

I'm also not in favor of races being made with pre-determined destinies. It's another thing that I've been seeing a lot of.

So, currently working on it, but it's getting close to presentable. Gonna make a thread here on /tg/ soon as I got two factions and some basic magic in it.

The Gnolls are the Steppe-Pack Khanate, and are lead by the Gnoll Matriarch Khorpurh Khan. She's almost 13 feet tall, and wears bone piercings in her off-arm so thick they're as if she had a shield. The Gnolls are faster and stronger than the other races, but not as tough. They ride Sabertooth Cats, Wooly Rhinos, and giant Hawks. Very fast, very aggressive, and a truly massive horde united under a single leader. The leader, Khorpurh Khan, is actually trying to conquer the known world so that she can give it to her last remaining child, the runt of her litter.

Dunno why, but I just like seeing gnolls in more modern settings instead of just in the classic medieval fantasy. Maybe it's because in their classic setting they're portrayed as outside of civilization so in a more modern setting they're shown in positions that exist around the cracks of society.

And I don't really see it as much as pre-determined destinies, but what they had been designed for. Orcs don't necessarily have to be evil, but world conquest is what they were designed for and why they mostly are as they are. I personally find your idea of gnolls to be a bit more pre-determined in its destiny, so to speak. It doesn't sound like they can ever change from what they are, where at least in theory my gnolls could eventually change.

Far as I've figured, aye Donk.

I was in the north, near Targos, when I encountered an abandoned human. Whole tribe got wiped out by Orcs. She survived under her mothers body, who died to protect her. She's growing up hard though; Humans don't move past death like we Gnolls. They harbor it, fear it, resent it. They're too worried about how short they live. They're strange, scared things... I think that's why they're so dangerous to Gnolls as a whole.

Everyone loves a good rebel, and that's what modern gnolls are - rebels, junta soldiers, guerrillas, gangsters, and anarchists.

It's fun to reinterpret the whole 'against all of civilization' in a modern context, where they can be sometimes evil or sometimes the hero, fighting against the machine. But mostly just layabouts you don't want to immigrate to your pure elf country. Therein lies the flaw of modern settings for me - all the fantasy races inevitably get associated with real races or ethnicities, even more so than in fantasy.

When you have a race that's just evil for the sake of it, the idea of them ever not being evil isn't brought up, aside from maybe a few token examples. Orcs would be evil forever, and no one would ever break the mold. Or, alternatively, elves would always be good, except for their dark cousins, which would always be evil.

You're thinking too much of just the games, friend. The khajiit have several different breeds, the Argonians are possibly humans transformed into lizard-people or perhaps uplifted lizards, we don't know, and the wood elves can turn into crazily shapeshifting animals that essentially represent the chaos they had before they had a set form. And even then, all the races have distinct cultures and histories that help make a really living and breathing world, without having to strongly rely on gimmicks in physical differences.

I think part of the fun of gnolls is that you can play them for laughs where you can't for orcs. Amp up some 'doglike' traits, or the fact that they're scavengers and will probably wear silly hats and shirts as much as proper armor.
