What is considered good steampunk? I love the idea myself but have never run across in any rpg I've played.

I think it's all about subtly, so a little goes a long way.
Start by picking a specific time and place and make a really good period costume.
Get stuff like fabric, stitching, colors, and fasteners right. Use historical sources. Avoid common steamshit like random leathers, busy patterns, etc. Make sure it actually fits you.
Pick two, maybe three, accessories. Never attach a gear to something where it doesn't serve an obvious practical purpose. No goggles.
