Pathfinder General /pfg/

Friendly reminder to tell us what 3pp your game allows if you need character building help.

Everyone say goodbye to our beloved princess, Forrest! She's taking an extended leave from DSP, so let's hope things work out. Remember that her last act in DSP was making kitsune great again in Bloodforge: Infusions. Send her fluffy tails!

Ok, did some dicking about with Kitsune Tails. Trying to make them worth taking long term without making them utterly dominating early on.

It's a first draft and feedback is highly appreciated.

>>49050190

>Did some digging and then added another age table.

It is now possible for a 900-year-old, venerable kitsune with eight iterations of Magical Tail to have a grand total of *18* tails.

With an external method of agelessness, such as certain high-level class talents or Sun Orchid Elixir, one could have a thousands-year-old kitsune with a truly prodigious amount of tails.

How do VMC work?

If I VMC Cleric, can I get Inquisition instead of a Domain?

I like that there are cute anime girls with cute animal ears here.
>>
>>49050487
Fox size is an oversight. I've adjusted the wording. Also adjusted it for the aging stuff, since having 9 tails feels iconic.

For swans, I recognize that, but the swan tengu were written based on the modern swan mythology more than anything else, being effectively elegant dire geese.
>>
Scrub here.

I was looking for some of the archetypes in Horror Adventures but I don't see them on d20pfsrd. Is this just because nobody's put it up there or because it's not considered "free" or whatever. Not really sure how Paizo handles that.

On a related note, anybody have the Horror Adventures PDF?

Thanks, that means a lot, even from an anonymous person on the internet. For people who were wondering or worrying: I'm fine, nothing's particularly wrong, there's no need to worry. I'll still exist and probably be around to post on forums and in threads here.

There's just some personal stuff that will keep me from being able to write things for DSP in the forseeable future.

So guys

I want to make goblinoids cool. What ideas should I look into?

A caste system of goblinoids?

>Goblins are serfs, peasants, and farmers
>Hobgoblins are warriors and soldiers
>Bugbears are spiritual leaders, knights, etc.

Where do other "monster" races fit in here? Could orcs be in the same class as Hobgoblins, Gnolls as an "outsider" caste? What have YOU done to change up the typical cannon fodder mooks in your games?

Kitsune should have a number of tails equal to the highest level of spells they can cast.

That and NPC kitsune gain one level in a spellcasting class for every 50 years they're alive.

I don't know what the most ridiculous character concept you folk have come up with has been, but I'm currently running a Half-Orc Paladin/Alchemist Gestalt, and the DM gave each of us a magic item.

When are we getting a kitsune foxfire kineticist archetype, EhnJolly?

Maybe a kitsune foxfire warlock vigilante? Kitsune work well as vigilantes...
>>
>>49050975
The DM decides what friggin' level NPCs are anyway.
>>
>>49051066
What a fantastic plan.

I also have a 3rd edition Fighter/Sorcorer who only wants knowledge. He also is NE, so will gain this knowledge through whatever means, up to and including eating a Lich's heart whole, if given the opportunity.

But the Half-Orc may turn out more fun.
>>
>>49051074
I'm still wondering what to throw in my new junk, but much like EZG, I don't like racial archetypes.

The best chance of that happening is me getting on a project that involves kitsune, which is pretty damn unlikely.
>>
I want to run a thievesy guild game, what are some good adventures about criminal underdogs? What are some good ways for getting the group together?
>>
>>49051101
Write an archetype themed around foxfire and illusions that can be taken by anyone, obviously.
>>
>>49050975
Do this please. Tails should be a mark of threat level, not just of age.

If a low-level group runs into a kitsune with nine tails, they should realise it's at least a 17th-level wizard and panic appropriately.
>>
>>49051117
That's honestly more likely. Maybe it'll make it into KOP as some kind of light/fire fusion archetype.

>Sworn Secrecy (Ex): A zenko cannot be magically forced to reveal the details of a message or duty they have received with their celestial messenger ability, even if an effect would normally cause them to do so. This ability even protects against compulsion or dominate effects, allowing the zenko to ignore orders to reveal the secrets in question. This racial trait replaces agile.

This almost certainly does not seem as valuable as agile, given that Acrobatics is a good skill. Perhaps a +1 bonus to Will saving throws against charms and compulsions (if not mind-affecting effects altogether) would not be out of line?

I know I'm reposting this, but am I capable of taking the Multiattack feat as a druid? My GM argues that I can't, and wants a direct source from the rules. He argues that I don't have three natural attacks all the time, so I can't take it.
>>
>>49051987
>Some feats have prerequisites. Your character must have the indicated ability score, class feature, feat, skill, base attack bonus, or other quality designated in order to select or use that feat. A character can gain a feat at the same level at which he gains the prerequisite.

>A character can't use a feat if he loses a prerequisite, but he does not lose the feat itself. If, at a later time, he regains the lost prerequisite, he immediately regains full use of the feat that prerequisite enables.

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/coreRulebook/feats.html

You can have a feat even if you can't use it all the time.
>>
>>49051987
There isn't a hard ruling.

By RAW, you can't take it.

What people often talk about RE: 24 hours is extrapolation from belts of +stat, where it counts for prerequisites after 24 hours. Even going by this (Admittedly houserule), you wouldn't be able to qualify since Wildshape doesn't last long enough.

Even though >>49052038 is right and you can HAVE feats you no longer qualify for, and they deactivate until you qualify again, RAW there's still the issue of getting them in the first place.
>>
>>49052079
>>49052038
What a shame. Now arises the question, how do I permanently gain three natural attacks as a race with none?
>>
>>49050788
Orcs are orcs, goblinoids only include goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears. Bugbears are naturally leaders among goblinoids and goblins and hobgoblins vie for minor leadership roles. Since they are chaotic evil entities a caste system might seem counter intuitive to their nature. They organize but never exceptionally well.
>>
>>49051153
>>49051148
>>49051212
I like it as a houserule, but mostly because I feel it would tie into the needlessly complex and obnoxiously convoluted trickster spirit rules for interesting plots.
It's like differentiating cleric level and ecclesiastical rank, except the rules are there as suggestions and everyone is cheating as hard as possible.
After all, it's a society of shapeshifting rogues. The only serious crime is being caught and not getting out of it with style.
>>
>>49052161
Hobgoblins are LE, Bugbears are NE, orcs and gobbos are CE.
I could see sticking them as client states under hobgoblin notrome, but I'd rather just give them their own deal.
Share out your cannonfodderness among playables and nonplayables evenly, or as called for by the story, then equally reward bypassing trouble as well as murdering your way through it.

>>49054343
None.
>>
>>49053702
Wait, Arcane trickster is good? I thought it was fairly bad, but I haven't looked at it much myself.
>>
>>49054503
Normally it's pretty bad because you have to give up caster levels to qualify. If you can get into it without doing that(like >>49053815), it's great.
>>
>>49054500
>Skill at Arms (Ex): You gain proficiency in all martial weapons and heavy armor.
>>
>>49053815
>VMC
That's variant multiclassing, right?
Do wizards not need feats? I've actually never played one.
I've never even played a prepared caster/seen one played correctly
>>
>>49054431
It's too hard for people like you to understand that optimization isn't exclusive to any other part of the game.

There's better feat options for vigilantes, rogues, and bounty hunting slayers than magical fucking tail, too. Especially when you consider how many you have to burn on it to get even Invisibility.

Seriously, they're almost all 4th level or lower. Get UMD ranks and a Wand for fuck's sake.
>>
>>49054547
>>49054436
I stand corrected.

Oracle is terrible VMC though (most are, so that's not surprising).
>>
>>49054563
Feats are nice, but anything they could get from feats is overshadowed by the fact that they are WIZARD, MASTER OF THE COSMOS
>>
>>49054503
It's not that it's bad, it's that it's worse than being a straight wizard. Losing 3 spellcaster levels can still net you 9th level spells, though it hurts in actual gameplay.
>>
Is there any place where I can find anthro kitsune art without being too out of place or outright trash?
>>
>>49054563
One crafting feat(besides scribe scroll) if your GM allows you downtime, then a spell focus(+maybe the greater variant) in your favoured school (optional unless you rely on saves or need it for other feats), and at high levels (greater) spell penetration or augment/superior summoning. That's pretty much all you really need. Anything else is just gravy.
>>
>>49054607
depends on what your group is okay with and why it would be out of place
>>
>>49054566
>get this unreliable ability that requires you to speak command words in a clear voice and has a incredibly restricted CL rather than a SLA that you use at character level and need only concentrate to use.
Like I said, you really have no clue how to optimize for the game that is being run as opposed to trying to win D&D.
>>

>>
>>49050107
so why should i play pathfinder over dnd?
>>
>>49054630
>Unreliable
>Get +19 modifier and you never have to roll
>Command word in a clear voice
>SLAs require concentration checks like spells do, making them fuck up more often than Silence effects happen
>Incredibly restricted CL
>Half the Magical Tail SLAs don't need a high CL, and the ones that do are a low enough level that it's inexpensive to buy a wand at that point

That also isn't what you said in your first post, at all.

Are goal posts heavy? I hope you're getting some sick gains, moving them all over the place like that.

It's okay if you're upset that you bought into the magical tail meme. It's easy to fall for it, then 8 of your 11 feats later you realize it was all a mistake.
>>
>>49054673
Over 3.5? Some nice streamlining, a number of classes are much better.

Over 4/5e? The amount of content.

Question for those still awake; while the Dragon Champion from the original playtest is still going to be in a different book, would you hate having it included in this playtest to just get a better look at it now, with the assumption that it'll hopefully be in the Dragon book playtest I hope to run?

If your group uses 3.5, use 3.5. If your group uses PF, use PF. PF has some improvements(like polymorph rules that aren't horrifically broken), but overall it's more of a sidegrade than an actual improvement, and if you're looking for actual improvements, you'll need to mix and match the two games. For other editions, if you prefer them to 3.5, you'll prefer them to PF.
>>
>>49054673
Nothing. The only reason I'm still in these thread is because I love you guys, /blush

You mean the ones that are pretty much one-paragraph afterthought along the lines of "you're not supposed to, but if the campaign isn't finished when you get to level 20, you could maybe extrapolate from the tables to continue progressing the game for another level or two"?
>>
>>49054770
Yes.

What you could do is just have two separate but compatible archetypes. Or have the drake be gotten via vigilante talents of the other one.

Read the Legacy of Dhakaan trilogy.

It covers the goblin kingdoms in the Eberron campaign setting.
>>
>>49054675
I can see that you're somewhat dense, so I'll explain what I said.

In a vigilante game, a kitsune takign Extra Tails is better off than one learnign to use a wand, because the SLAs that they gain benefit them more than UMD and Wands can possibly do so. The concentration check that an SLA may require is less important than being able to use the abilities you gain from the Magical Tale feats without requiring any extra effort or saying anything aloud (which is a requirement for using the command word on a wand). Since most vigilante talents give you free feats and upgrades as you progress in level, you need less feats than you would for most other character classes, making magical tail a useful feat for a kitsune vigilante, despite being a sub-optimal feat in other situations. An otherwise non-magic using kitsune vigilante having access to disguise self, charm person, misdirection, and invisibility as SLA makes them useful for that instance, despite how they would not normally be so useful for other classes in other situations.

Useful feats for a game or campaign you are playing in are still useful and on occasion even optimal feats, even when they are not optimal for other builds and situations outside that game or campaign.

Your outright dismissal of the feat as "never useful" is sadly characteristic of the optimizing faggotry on /tg/ that cannot and will not take into account actual play use of those feats and skills.

Not that guy, but UMD is more versatile than Magical Tail. It's better in the long run.
>>
>>49054760
>>49054786
Yes. They're in the core book. It takes work, but so does everything else in every game system, because there aren't any perfect ones. Extrapolation of the Weapon focus/specialization/Iron Will/Great Fortitude/Lightning Reflexes helps maintain the save bonuss, while to give characters spells past 9th level, use of the wordcasting System from Ultimate magic prevents insanty like the epic spells from 3.5 had while giving casters something more to do. I've also toyed around with using Mythic feats in place of non-caster feats after 20th level, simply tacking on mythic levels for noncasters in addition to their post-20th levels.

Basically, allowing characters the opportunity to play with truly horrific monsters like Ancalagon the Black and other things behind the Bestiaries is better than "oh, you're 20th/30th level, you have to start over now, there's nothing more past this point."

If there weren't, how did gods and daemon princes and the King in Yellow happen? Such is my admittedly self-involved reasoning.
>>
>>49055646
>saying that as if UMD can't also be taken.
It's a skill, anyone can learn it. Not everyone can gain two free uses of Change Self per day without using any vocal components as a martial type character in a class where it can actually be incredibly useful such as vigilante.
>>
>>49055696
Yeah, sure, but
>the SLAs that they gain benefit them more than UMD and Wands can possibly do so
Is wrong, though.
>>
>>49055684

>>
>>49055708
................what part of "SLA being silent, still, and innate magic" being better than "carrying items that you have to say things aloud and clearly to activate" while trying not to attract attention makes UMD based wand use "better" for a vigilante kitsune, anon? Do you not understand the concept of 'situational viability mattering'?

If you can define a case where saying "Vanish" aloud in a clear voice after spending money to be able to do so is better than simply disappearing because you will it so , feel free.

design a "firearm" AC instead of touch AC, with modern armor, some kinds of natural AC and some kinds of magical AC adding to firearm AC that don't normally add to touch AC.

You could also have some creatures with rules like "takes half damage from piercing" instead of DR. Very suitable for things like zombies, vampires, big creatures like the sasquatch etc.

>>
>>49057209
Not the anon you're replying to, but what spells are worth a feat and what should be included in 'packages'? I've been pondering house rules about spells costing feats to learn. Either that or making general/combat feats as valuable as knowing all spells.
>>
>>49057589
What I'd suggest, if you had to do that, would be to use feats to open up spell levels (take this feat for level 1 spells, etc) or classes (take this feat for necromancy), but certainly don't do one spell per feat.

Or you could just use spheres.

>>
>>49057209
Yes, because a drow (disregarding the overpowered noble drow) fits in everywhere, unlike a kitsune that has a human form which fits in everywhere.

Whiteroom theorycraft is theorycraft. Actually playing in a game is not the same, and thus can't be considered in the same light, which is my point.
>>
>>49051038
I played a Spell Sage Wizard 3/Dervish Defender Warder 1 with like 27+ AC when properly buffed at level 4 (even more if he took the time to do ALL THE BUFFS) who used a quarterstaff as a double weapon to take AoOs whilst otherwise spending his turns casting spells.

He was strangled to death first session by an assassin vine. His CMD was not very impressive it turns out. I planned to have him use "Emblem of Greed" later on in life and use the style from weapon masters handbook that lets you use polearms as double weapons with it.
>>
>>49059600
>Implying kitsune fit everywhere and aren't primarily a meme race just like drow
>Defending the garbage that is magical tail

The only time magical tail isn't going to be bad is maybe on that one oracle curse, or a fighter. Maybe. Probably not. You can still do it and have fun, and the vigilante can do well with it, but you are intentionally crippling yourself with a mediocre, expensive feat chain.

>Overpowered Drow Noble
That was me thinking of the wrong name. Drow Nobility is the name of the feat chain. Drow nobles are busted, but REGULAR drow (and half-drow, which would fit in better and can pretend to be a human at negligible cost) can take.

>muh whiteroom
This does not stop magical tail from being shit design. It can work in a real game, but people claim fighter "worked just fine for them" all the time.

So because our party doesn't have any Rogues, our DM gave us a magic "Rogue Book" as a reward for going through what was essentially a Rogue dungeon (was going to have some reward for the party Rogue who I can only assume stopped showing up before I joined). Basically it allows you to take a class feature from the Rogue and switch it out with one of your own features from that level.

I'm playing a Sanctified Slayer right now and am debating on using it. I don't really feel like I need Track or Stern Gaze, so I thought I'd trade one of them out for another d6 to sneak or Evasion. If my DM allows us to use the Unchained's table though I'm definitely snagging Weapon Finesse.

Thoughts?

My DM finally approved me using Warpath Follower.

Now I have to choose 3 disciplines of the following list: Piercing Thunder, Eternal Guardian, Golden Lion and Scarlet Throne.

Have 7 maneuvers to pick up , 3 stances at the maximum level of 3.

Any tips, I'm kind overwhelmed by the choices.

Stances:
Ignore Scarlet Throne stances
Choose a third level stance that dictates what you'll be in most of the time
Choose two first level stances for utility, maybe even out of battle use, but I don't think the disciplines you have really lend themselves to that.

Everything else, just choose what's fun.
What weapon are you using? If Fool's Errand is also allowed, you can also qualify for that.

Haha, oops. This is what I get for being slow. Anyway, at If anyone was interested in that Racial Vigilante archetype (that had to get renamed for obvious reasons), I at least have another draft of that to get beaten into paste instead of JUST the feats: http://pastebin.com/FJFHEVFa

I wanted to see if changing the formatting of gaining new SLAs, but I don't know if sorting everything by tiers makes sense or not. It should at least be clear how it works though. Also went and made the archetype compatible with the Warlock, because reasons, but I don't know if I'm feeling it.

You also qualify for Black Seraph and Unquiet Grave but I expect you don't want those if you're not evil/spooky.

Sheathing a weapon that doesn't have a sheathe is more about feinting with it: putting it in a nonthreatening position that they wouldn't expect you can attack from.
>>
>You can go without food and water for one day. Each time you manifest this power, your body manufactures sufficient solid and liquid nourishment to satisfy your needs for that time.

I'm making Alien based eidolon and was thinking about homeruling acidic blood. Don't have a clue about game balance and DM is busy with world building.
How does 1/2 damage taken+1/2 HD+ con mod,(Reflex save for half) in retaliation sounds? For 2 evolution points. Also full damage to melee weapon striked with for another point or 2.
>>
>>49062822
I wrote a feat of some relevance for this. Lemme fetch the text; it might be handy for you as a basis.

CORROSIVE ERUPTION [PSIONIC]
Your bodily fluids are both pressurized and highly acidic.
Prerequisites: Aberration type or aberrant subtype, Con 13+
Benefit: A spray of corrosive fluids erupts from
your body whenever you are dealt piercing or slashing damage by a melee attack from an adjacent creature, dealing acid damage equal to your hit dice plus your Constitution modifier to the creature that damaged you. You may expend your psionic focus as an immediate action when this occurs; if you do, this damage increases to 1d4 points of acid damage per hit die, plus your constitution modifier. You are immune to damage from your own acidic fluids.

> At 6th level, once per day you can reach into water as a standard action and pull out an object with a maximum gp value of up to 50 gp × your cleric level.

> This object always has the broken condition upon being withdrawn from the water. The water you reach into must be at least deep enough to fully immerse yourself in it. At 12th level, objects you retrieve are not broken. At 20th level, you can retrieve objects worth up to 5,000 gp. If retrieving an object that would not normally float, assume it rests on top of or is entwined with debris that does float. Objects retrieved in this manner disappear after 24 hours, if not already used up or otherwise destroyed before then.

Please tell me there's a really cool way to utilize this. I'm going to be playing a Waterworld-esque campaign "eventually" and really want to try using this somehow.
>>
>>49062862
I'd also like for it to have realistic chances to damage weapons and objects or is it too OP?

You don't eat anything. You literally create sustenance out of nothing in your body.
>>
>>49062956
I mean...eh? Hardness is a bit of a bitch to handle, mechanically, and also breaking the loot is a thing. I haven't looked much into sunder math & damaging objects, largely because I rarely do it and my group(s) tend not to either. Anon may be of more help there.
>>
>>49062977
Yeah, it says you manufacture the nourishment which has to come from somewhere. It makes you eat purified shit. Psionics is a system which lets you eat your own shit.

It could be solid soulstuff and liquid brain-fluid, for all we know.

Sundering is almost exclusively a monster thing. Even moreso than grappling. There are a few reasons for this

>Most monsters aren't sunderable
The game's about beating up monsters and taking their stuff. Any encounter that doesn't include at least one humanoid-ish creature that uses armor or a weapon is an encounter where sundering is useless.

>CMD Scaling
CMD scales faster than every other monster defense, period. AC would, too, if it got Strength AND Dexterity to it. Paizo isn't the brightest in this respect, it would've been much better if CMD just used the higher of the two.

>Loot
Your aim is to recover the enemy's shit, not smash it to bits. When you sunder, you are attacking your money. If it's a cheap thing, like a mundane sword or non-masterwork armor, it's worth considering, maybe, but is it really worth investing feats and class features into? Not really.

>Magic Items
Holy shit, these are hard to break. You absolutely have to have a dedicated character to break a magic sword. The combination of the base hardness and HP of most weapons with the fact that making it masterwork and enchanting it at all makes it crazy high leads to a point where some creatures have less durability than their sword does. Armor has even more, let alone armor made from any sort of special material.

In short, it's a monster thing. Not just a monster thing, but a pretty dickish one - a martial's magic weapon takes up a good eighth of his WBL, minimum, and replacing a destroyed one basically requires a side adventure. Why D&D has always both been a system including monsters that destroy your shit but also a system that requires you to have a certain amount of shit to survive is beyond me. I genuinely would rather be hit by a Greater Bestow Curse than lose a magic weapon above a certain price. It's cheaper to get rid of.
>>
>>49063289
Indeed. Hence why I don't bother trying to support it.
>>
>>49063305

>>
>>49063025
You make it. Literally out of NOTHING. Like all the other powers and spells that create something out of literally nothing.

Stop trying to project your fetish onto the power. It doesn't do that.
>>
>>49063289
Because tradition of D&D lies in aggravating the player. Because the players are gluttons for punishment.

After all, you lose stuff, die, reroll and bang your head against the hard module until you win no?

Hope your DM doesn't throw things that can't be tripped at you, pump your CMB and size, then go down Dirty Fighting/Improved Trip, Greater Trip, Vicious Stomp and Combat Reflexes. If there's still a way to replace an iterative with a trip, open with that them put the boots to them.

Trip is the worse of the two Combat Maneuvers worth a damn to build around (the other is Dirty Trick), but if it works, it works well.

Find a local wizard (or a wizard in your party) and use it to fish up Diamond Dust so that said wizard can slap some permanancy effects on the party.
>>
>>49064993
Its in horror adventures, its supposed to be viewed as disgusting and be an archetype for DMs to use for their foes. Vore is a weird fetish, because theres nothing inherently sexual about it at all. Its like being sexually attracted to walking, gunshots or ink.

Swallow whole for player characters is a mechanic ive wanted for a while, but ive gotta say it seems stupid on a witch, she wont have the bonuses to actually eat anyone if its a PC, though monsters like trolls or hags taking this archetype will likely rock a stat block easily capable of pulling it off and a level advantage over the PCs.
>>
>>49064923
The social skills are the best ones the Warder can really use other than Perception. This means that a 10 Int non-human can put ranks into all three of those and Perception and not really lose out on anything..

Armor check penalty will fuck Dex and Str skills, and the Warder doesn't get any knowledge skills to identify creatures, so unless you're dead set on having high Handle Animal or Survival, the skill point loss doesn't hurt at all.
