However, to the quality-conscious it is vital to find the sweet spot between coverage and brush marks and - since achieving that goal is as easy as adding a little water - there's no barrier to experimentation.

Have you tried not playing D&D?

Most miniature paints consistencies aren't too bad straight out of the pot. The main problem people have that makes awful thick paintjobs is just lumping too much paint on the brush.

I can't not laugh looking at these horrors. It's like they encountered the warp and were left with horribly disfigured caricatures of a face freezing their terror for all eternity. These are the faces of damned souls that know no peace.

And melted army men. I want to correctly paint a whole marine with perfect shading, highlights, and color theory. Then lay down faces like this specifically unthinned and applied with a sponger or something. You can't get abject horror any other way.

Thin your paints is just a meme, I never thin my paints.

Sure if you want to paint to a high standard then you're going to need to thin your paints but if you just want tabletop standard and you're just going to do base colours, drybrush, and ink washes then why bother?

Just use less paint and maybe pre wet your brush.
