Off the top of my head I'd say....a Grudge?
>>

They're butt buddies so I don't think they can
>>
A series of unfortunate events.

Karl Franz refuses to give way to a dwarf on the streets of Altdorf.

Let the war begin.

Came in here to suggest this
Thorgrim somehow seems like the kind of guy to bear a grudge

Upon the deathbed of a truly ancient dwarf, the oldbeard reveals one of his letters: it's the copy of a document dating back to the first battle for black fire pass, it details in more than just legends on what accords the dwarfs gave ghal maraz to sigmar and find out in it a signed clause for the hammer to actually return to the dwarfen people at the death of sigmar.
Not wanting to close an eye to the will of his ancestors Thorgrim is forced to start a military campaign against the empire that on the other hand can't give up on the hammer due to both political and religious pressures (giving up the hammer would be an act of submission, it would be giving up on what built the empire, gives charismatic power to the emperor on the provinces and could be interpeted as an admission of the god-king's mortality).

So both nations start the slowest and less brutal war of the century: battle lines stand for hours as the diplomats of both factions finish heralding the legal repercussions and rights of properties to each other; artilleries purposefully miss their targets to show both the accuracy and the benevolence of their lords and generals on both sides choose on accord to fight their battles specifically where there just happens to be a common enemy for both in the middle.
Of course propaganda and hearsay foment in the hearts of the most warlike a true desire of the death of their enemies and numerous skirmishes and bloody fights arise on the edges of men and dwarfs territories (despite marginal in comparison to the actual scale of the campaign)

There's a pretty interesting theory that the current Ghal-Maraz wasn't the original Ghal-Maraz.

So were Elves and Dwarfs, and we all know how that turned out.

At one of the other village a dwarf getts killed and his surviving companion tells the dwarfdom of this.
A grudge is declared and a emissary is sent to tell Karl Franz or the elector to not intervene.
Emissary is depayed on the way or died so when Thorgrim rolls up to torch the village, he gets intecepted by a small patrol and a full-on war is declared.
Long story short - Village gets razed, all is fine.

The emissary can even reach the ruled in charge of the village, but the ruler deny it, and the emissary either can't relay back or Thorgrim continues.
The ruler can agree but the patrol doesn't receive the memo, ignores it or dark elves did it.
Using grudges is a easy way.
From humankind it can be a ambitious human lie about raiding dwarfs to Franz or Franz being dragged into it as too many nobles are invested

Gonna need a bit more than that.

Dwarfs take grudges seriously, but they feel the same about personal and family honour.

Something like a dead dwarf is going to fall down to the family or clan to right. For the King of the Dwarfs to get involved, it would have to be a direct slight on his noble house.
